Logging-in to United Streaming:

Searching for a Video:

Search by the following tools:

Keyword Search: Use the standard or advanced keyword tools to search video and clip titles as well as resource descriptions for the keywords you enter. The Advanced Search keyword option supports more powerful searching capabilities than are available with standard searches.

All Titles: Browse the collections by selecting subject areas that are of interest to you.

Interpreting Your Results:

A keyword search for “biomes” resulted in 45 videos, 38 video clips, 36 images, 0 calendar events, and 0 articles.

The videos will be listed below with a brief description. Under the brief description you may also see Editable Video symbol and the Closed Caption

symbol. The grade level of the video is also listed along with the total Runtime of the video.

*Click on the name of the video to view open the video.You can see that the video titled Elements of Biology: Biomes: The Adaptations of Organisms is broken into smaller segments.

To view the video, click the Play button.

To download the video, click the disk iconbutton.

Streaming the Video:

1. Simply click PLAY to view the video in the User-Friendly Video Player.

2. Use the Pause, Play, and Stop button at the bottom of the player to control the video. You can also view the video full screen.

Downloading a Video:

1. Right-click the DISK ICON.

2. Click “Save Target As…”

3. Choose where to save the video. Then click “Save”.

Learning Tools:

1. Click on “Learning Tools” at the top of the screen.

Calendar: The Calendar allows you to show video content that presents events that happened on a specific date in history.

Image Library: Allows you to save images based on keyword or subject search.

Clip Art Gallery: The gallery allows you to view over 1,200 images.

Hyperlinking vs. Embedding Videos (in PowerPoint):

Hyperlinking is an element in an electronic document that links to another place. When you should hyperlink:

To see the controls in the Windows Media Player, such as play, pause, stop, rewind, find, mute, and the scroll bar.

When making dual-platform projects. When making web pages. (You will need to stream clips from

unitedstreaming in order to protect the content.)

Inserting the downloaded video within the application so it plays in the frame/slide of the applicationWhen you should embed:

If you want the video to play full screen automatically. If you do not want to see the control panel of the media player. If you wish to add text boxes that serve as visual cues while the video

is playing. If you need easier navigation through a multimedia presentation.

Creating a Hyperlink to the Video (in Word or PowerPoint):

1. Highlight text, select a picture, or select a clip art image.2. Right-click the text, picture or clip art image. Then click “Hyperlink”.3. Navigate and select the video. Once you find the video, select it and then click “OK”.

The selected text should now be underlined and colored. To test the link, click on the link.Embedding a Video (in PowerPoint):

Before completing the steps below, be sure to download your video to a destination folder. In the

same folder, save the PowerPoint presentation that will have the embedded video. At school, download to your student user folder. Save your power point here also. Remember that the video and the power point need to be saved to the same place.

1. Click on “Insert” then point to “Movies and Sounds”.

2. Click on “Movie from File”.

3. Navigate and select the video and click “OK”.

4. Decide if you want the video to play “Automatically” or “When Clicked”.

5. Resize the video by holding down one of the 4 corner handles, and drag to resize the image.

Protecting Unitedstreaming Content:

No video editing software is permitted except for those titles that have been designated as “Editable Content.”

Teachers may keep video files and projects on disks and servers as long as subscription is current.

Converting digital video to analog format such as VHS cassettes is not allowed—only digital devices may be used.

Students are allowed to keep projects containing video clips in their electronic portfolios if used for demonstration purposes.

Protect the content, especially when creating web pages, so that only subscribers are able to see the video files.

Be sure to use proper APA or MLA formats when you cite video resources and support materials.

Technology Information to Know:

Each minute of downloaded video will require about 1.8 Mb of storage space on hard drives or other storage media.

One video can be accessed simultaneously by many end-users. Home users with 56k modems can easily search and use support

materials; downloads are possible but will be slow. Minimum screen resolution should be set at 800 x 600; you will get

better results if you set screen resolution at 1024 x 768. Windows Media Player (version 9) and Apple QuickTime Player (version

6) are recommended for best results. Make duplicate project folders when students work in computer labs to

accommodate multiple “hits” on the same files. Help to eliminate duplicate downloads by creating shared folders on

the file servers for grade levels or subject areas. Limit file names to 8 characters or fewer and use file extensions to

insure that projects will work on Macintosh and PC platforms
