The ever-mounting waste of plastic bottles made

from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a pandemic

in progress. The longer we wait to make positive

changes, the worse-off the world may be. In 2007,

Mountainsmith chose to make a difference by taking

what we believe to be one small step in the right

direction through the incorporation of recycled

post-consumer materials into our products without

sacrificing our high-quality standards.

By working together with our long-held partnerships,

we developed a material called ReForge™, a fabric

made from 100% post-consumer PET bottles. Unlike

other manufacturers who only use a percentage of

recycled PET in their sustainable product offerings,

Mountainsmith is committed to using 100% recycled

PET content in our ReForge™ materials. Beyond

the ReForge™ manufacturing process, we have

also been able to develop additional materials like;

zippers, webbing and many types of mesh and trim,

all of which are made from recycled PET bottles.

With the advent of our ReForge™ manufacturing

process, we were the first to manufacture packs made

from 100% recycled PET in the outdoor industry -

and for 4 years now, we have been committed to

revolutionizing the word “Green” through our company

philosophy, visible business practices and product

innovation. For 2011, we now offer over 35% of our

product line in recycled and sustainable materials,

a feat not matched by any of our competitors.

Our commitment to sustainable innovation not

only allowed us to be the first ever recipient of

the prestigious Backpacker Magazine Editor’s

Choice Green Award, but also serves as

the backbone to our four core tenets:

Utility, Durability, Sustainability and Value.

MOUNTAINSMITH - REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT ONE STEP AT A TIME

The finished ReForge™ is now suitable to be sewn into the most innovative packs in the world, simply known as MOUNTAINSMITH.

Plastic bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are collected, separated and cleaned.

The labels and caps are removed and the bottles are then ground into flakes for melting and extrusion.

The yarn is woven into ReForge™ and then coated to further increase the material’s overall strength and durability.

The last extrusion process allows the plastic to be spun into the yarn shown here.

The result of the melting and extrusion process yields plastic chips which are then prepared for the next extrusion process.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Mountainsmith, founded in 1979 by legendary outdoorsman, Patrick Smith, was born of

a need for seriously durable gear that could withstand the rigors of backcountry pursuits

in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Patrick began his life long professional involvement

in the outdoors as founder of the Colorado School of Outdoor Living and later as a Nordic

Ski guide teaching winter ski mountaineering and winter backpacking skills. Patrick found

commercial gear at the time seriously lacking for his guiding endeavors and soon began

making his own.

Based on these backcountry experiences, his initial product innovation was the world's

first fully rigid backcountry ski sled to haul massive loads of gear effectively and efficiently

through the harsh Colorado winter wilderness. Friends of Patrick's soon saw the benefit

of his system and wanted sleds for themselves and encouraged him to make more for their

own pursuits...thus Mountainsmith was born. Soon after, Patrick Smith came up with the

iconic lumbar waist pack to effectively carry gear while backcountry skiing and secured the

first patent, US PAT #5529230, for a lumbar pack with Delta Load Compression which

carries onto the present day.

As a company, Mountainsmith, desired to build the best made, most durable and functional

packs on the market; unmatched by anyone for their comfort, stability, and performance in

the backcountry.

This tradition of legendary quality continues to the present day with a full line of active

outdoor lifestyle products for today's active consumer. The quality and comfort of all

Mountainsmith products - technical backpacks, travel storage systems, luggage, pet

products, camera bags, as well as our iconic lumbar packs - set a standard of excellence

in the outdoor marketplace. Mountainsmith manufactures, markets, and distributes

a wide array of products designed to meet the demands of travel on and off the trail,

through mountain valleys, airports, campuses, and canyons...anywhere that carrying-

comfort is essential.

In 2006, Mountainsmith took a leadership position as the first outdoor company to

incorporate recycled post-consumer materials into modern pack design with the introduction

of the Recycled Day and Tour lumbar packs. Together with their factory partners, the

company developed ReForge™, a fabric made from 100% post-consumer PET bottles used

across a broad range of categories within the Mountainsmith line-up.

Mountainsmith’s Load Dispersion Technology (LDT) when properly loaded, will

effectively distribute weighted loads from the front of the pack, through the back

panel suspension, and towards the lumbar and hips. The LDT is comprised of

two custom moldable 6061 aluminum stays that are arranged in an X-frame

configuration behind the molded back panel. This system provides a pivoting

effect for the pack body’s center of gravity to shift with the dynamic movement

of the user’s body and enables the user to utilize independently adjustable

shoulder straps for a more custom and ergonomic fit. The X-frame aluminum

stays are put into use when the waistbelt compression adjusters, along with

help from shoulder strap load lifters, pull the “weight” into the lumbar and hip

region and off of the shoulders for increased carrying comfort.
