The LettersThe past year has been an extremely busy and

important one for the Board of Directors at theHumane Society at Lollypop Farm. An extensivesearch ensued to find a new President/CEO, anda board retreat took place to develop a newstrategic plan that will chart our future for the

next three years.

The top priority of the newly created strategic planis to address the burgeoning cat overpopulation crisis.

It will take a community-wide effort to find creative solutions to addressthis huge problem, and it will require strong financial support from thecommunity to implement the solutions.

The Board of Directors is very proud of the staff at the Humane Society. They perform the day-to-day work of the shelter and deliver the highestquality outreach programs to our community. They enrich the lives of thousands of animals every year and make it possible for animals cominginto the shelter to find compassion, warmth and a chance at a new life.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to take this opportunity tothank the community-at-large for their past financial support and ask foryour continued assistance.

Rosemary L. BerginChair, Board of DirectorsHumane Society at Lollypop Farm

Typically an annual report gives us a chance to lookback at what we’ve accomplished. The hard partabout working at Lollypop Farm is actually takingthose few moments to look back and to applaud ouraccomplishments. As an organization and as a staffwe are so mission driven and passionate about

making a difference for the animals and people inour community that we rarely stop to say “Good Job!”.

We are always on the move looking to improve our programs and services to match what our community needs.

As you read through this annual report I hope you’ll take a moment alongwith me to say “Great Job”. Some of our highlights include launching our Pet Peeves behavior help line, which received it’s 1,000th call since it’sinception in 2003. Our cruelty department made nearly 3,000 field visits in an effort to prevent animal neglect and/or intentional acts of cruelty. Weadopted over 7,000 animals to loving new homes, built on an outstandingcore of volunteers, and added to our state-of-the-art clinic. We are thankfulfor such a talented and dedicated group of staff and volunteers, but areespecially appreciative of our supportive and committed community.Without you, we would not be able to accomplish the good we do.

Thanks so much,

Alice Calabrese SmithPresident and CEO, Humane Society at Lollypop Farm

The Vision

The Humane Society at Lollypop Farm envisions a time when our

community celebrates the human / animal bond; embraces the

mutual benefits therein; and treats all fellow beings with care,

compassion and respect.

The Shelter

14,753 needy and homeless animals were brought to Lollypop Farm

in 2004. Of that number 8,691 were found to be adoptable with

7,067 adopted to new homes. Our goals are to reunite lost pets with

their families and to find loving new homes for those who are

unwanted or abandoned. We also give pets an opportunity to

regain their physical and mental well-being through our foster

care program. Pets are available for adoption at Lollypop Farm in

Fairport and at Lollypop Farm West in Brockport. To combat pet

overpopulation, all dogs, cats and rabbits are spayed or neutered

before leaving the Humane Society.

Veterinary Medical Services

The Humane Society at Lollypop Farm has a clinic that includes a staff of two veterinarians, five veterinary technicians, and one veterinary assistant.

Our state of the art equipment includes gas anesthesia machines and two EKG machines. The Lollypop Veterinary staff performed 5,577 surgeries in 2004 consisting primarily of spay/neuter procedures. In addition to surgeries on dogs and cats, the Lollypop veterinary staff has performed surgical procedures on rabbits, guinea pigs, geese, chickens, roosters, ferrets, sheep, and goats.

The veterinary staff assists the Investigation Department by examining and treating abused animals and performing forensic necropsies. The clinic also provides an Externship Program for veterinary students and an Internship Program for veterinary technician students.

Stitch

“Stitch” is one of the many neglected pets that are brought to LollypopFarm. Upon arriving, he was immediately brought to our clinic to have agaping wound closed and a huge tumor removed. Despitehis painful past, this cat exudes affection. “Stitch” hastouched a host of people at this shelter, from the crueltyinvestigations department, to the shelter clinic, to fostercare—which in this case was the office of a staff member. As a result of all their efforts, Stitch is on his way to aloving new home.

The Farm

Each year, nearly 150,000 visitors enjoy the farmyard at Lollypop Farm. This unique exhibit allows families to learn more about farm animals andoffers these unwanted animals a safe, caring environment while they awaitloving new homes.

Every summer children ages 4-13 enjoy our popular Lollypop Farm Camp.Kids develop respect and understanding of all living creatures, whilebecoming familiar with the responsibilities involved in caring for animals.

Thanks to M&T Bank and Rochester Female Charitable Society for making our Farm Camp Scholarship Program possible.

Volunteer profile

Marilyn Lucas is one example ofthe many terrific volunteers

Lollypop Farm is thankful to have. She has given over1200 hours since startingas a Humane Society

volunteer in July of 2000.Marilyn staffs our Lollypop

Shop where adopting familiesbuy their food and supplies,

completes loads of paperwork for our membershipdepartment and recently spent hours organizing ourcomputer/mailing room.

She quietly “gets the job done” and often works extrahours when she notices a need. In addition, Marilynhas raised more than $1,000 by creating baskets ofdog/cat goodies, filled with fun and useful items forpets mostly purchased and contributed by Marilyn. The beautiful baskets are raffled at our events. Her generosity and her pleasant personality make us grateful she joined the volunteer team.

Page 8: Lollypop Farm Annual Report 2004

Volunteer Program

A dedicated 779 people, gave38,149 hours in the last fiscalyear. We are thankful to have a strong base of long-term volunteers who support our dayto day operations. SeveralLollypop West volunteers havebeen there since that adoptioncenter opened. Volunteers havestepped into new roles such ascounselors on the Pet PeevesBehavior Help Line and intakeassistants in our clinic. A volunteer with the HumaneSociety can have a varied“career” by taking advantage ofadvanced training offerings. Justas valuable—and valued—arethose volunteers who choose tokeep it simple and providehands-on animal care, in theshelter or at home in foster care. Each and every role a volunteerfulfills, helps carry out the mission of the Humane Society.

No shelter in the world can boast of a more dedicated & generous corps of volunteers.

Here is a list of volunteers who worked at least 100 hours during the two years ending 6/30/04. Space does not permit us to list the therapy animals, or the people who worked up to 100 hours.

Many more people worked at events and in foster care. On behalf of the animals, we are grateful to all.

Giving Back: A Family AffairThe Murphy/Linares Family

Edith Murphy has always had a love for animals. Shebrought her four daughters out to visit the “old”Lollypop Farm often. She describes her dog“Mandy”, a mixed-breed dog, as the nicest dog sheever had. Mrs. Murphy met “Mandy” many years agoat Lollypop Farm. “Mandy” was a victim of abuse, confiscated due to cruelty, and Mrs. Murphy fell in lovewith her the moment she saw her.

Although her daughter Edie (Murphy) Linares grew up around animals, it wasthe death of her favorite cat that started her involvement with Lollypop Farm.“Tuxedo” was a stray cat and when she passed away, Edie came to LollypopFarm to do something in her memory. She ended up sponsoring two cat condos at Lollypop Farm one in memory of “Tuxedo” and another in honor ofher daughter Emme. Edie has also volunteered in the gift shop, adoptions, withevents and foster care. Emme has helped her mother with volunteer work andattended our popular summer farm camp. Edie’s husband Chris, a senior vicepresident at Hickey Freeman, has frequently asked Hickey Freeman to sponsorHumane Society events and will soon be joining our Board of Directors.

Both the Murphy and Linares’ families have also taken steps to provide for the Humane Society in the future. Mrs. Murphy set up a charitable remaindertrust listing Lollypop Farm as a beneficiary and the Linares’ have included theorganization in their will. The Linares have also included provisions in theirwill for their beloved Lollypop adoptees. The family currently has three petsfrom Lollypop, a dog and two cats. “I feel like we hit the jackpot”, says Edie.
