London CBD
LondonLondon, the capital of England and the United Kingdom. At the same time it is
the biggest metropolitan area in the UK. London is 1706,8 km2. The London Underground network is the oldest underground railway network in the
whole world. London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London, the
Royal Botanic Gardens, St. Margaret’s Church and the historic settlement of
Greenwich. All this makes London one of the most often visited cities in the world.
CBD CBD, usually called a Central Business
District, is the main and central area of a city, where the main road routs
converge. The residential area in a CBD is very small. In a CBD mainly you can find offices, public institutions such as
churches, libraries and public halls. There are a few houses and more hotels.
Land in the CBD has high values, therefore it is more affordable to build
high buildings such as skyscrapers.
Problems in the CBD in London
The problems in CBD’s are usually similar:
• Land values and space• Pollution• Traffic
• Urban Decline
Land Values and Space
Land prices in the CBD are often the highest in the whole city.
There is a little free space, and the land prices are high,
therefore owners off small shops had to move out. To fight the
expensive land in London, people started building high-rise
buildings to get some space.
Land Values and Space
Pollution
Pollution in a CBD is very common. Due to heavy traffic and nearby heavy industry the pollution of water, air
and soil. To stop the damage, London's administration constructed laws against dumping sewage into the river, improved the amount of
bins and road sweeping in the CBD, planted more trees and shrubs to clean the air and decreased the amount of traffic to minimum.
TrafficMost of the cities were built before
the invention of a car, therefore most of the city roads in London are not wide and big enough for
cars. The cities administration has tried to solve the problems by
closing some roads of a CBD and allowing only pedestrians to some
places. They developed public transport, built motorways and
bypasses and constructed many-level parkings.
Traffic
Urban Decline
Due to the high prices in the CBD many people moved out. Other
areas of the CBD have been flooded by shops and offices which also caused the urban decline. To stop the urban
decline the authorities of London organized redevelopment of
some zones of the London CBD.
Conclusion
The Central Business District of London is the heart of the city. Although it has some problems, it is still the most besieged point in the city.
London’s administration has taken steps to overcome the problems such
as pollution or traffic to make the CBD a place even better for people.
