London Sinfonietta’s new music movement began in 1968, with our first ever concert at Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. Now, as that hall undergoes a two-year renovation, we venture out across South London as part of our Southbank Centre residency, whilst continuing our longstanding relationship with Kings Place. We’ll be making powerful experiences where the space, too, is part of the event. Divert from the ordinary – hear new music, within new places and set your mind on a different course. Whether you were at our first concert or haven’t heard us yet, join the movement.

A night of difficult music from @andrederidder, Mica Levi and more. @Ldn_Sinfonietta really is the most diverse, brilliant ensemble in London. @antimega

The young capacity audience clearly infected the players with their open-eared enthusiasm. Indeed, this was one of the best played London Sinfonietta performances I’ve heard in years.**** The Guardian

Watching David Hockings and his London Sinfonietta colleagues weaving round the vibraphones, marimbas, pianos and synthesizers in Steve Reich’s Sextet was like watching brain surgeons moving with scalpels around six operating tables, performing miracles on every one. ***** The Times

The atmosphere was refreshing. For the people in the auditorium, Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s music is not to be dismissed for being too difficult. Its very complexity is what makes it worth engaging with. The Economist

I want to tweet about the Romitelli opera I’ve just seen by @Ldn_Sinfonietta, but I’m not sure what to say. In the best possible sense. @DanCJeffries

Superb performance of Birtwistle’s Theseus Game by @Ldn_Sinfonietta at their virtuosic best, playing a very tough work brilliantly well. @chaconato

STOCKHAUSEN & BOULEZ

MUSIC OF THE MODERNISTS

Now celebrating his 90th year, Pierre Boulez remains an indomitable force in contemporary music – a true legend in his own lifetime. His works project an image of a brave new world, purged of historical clutter: music that breaks the rules, in his words, ‘for the pleasure of breaking them’. Facing off against two of Boulez’s iconic chamber works is Region III of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s masterpiece Hymnen – whose survey of national anthems presents a powerful portrait of a collective human spirit. #MusicalModernists

PIONEERS We make new music. You make new music happen.Did you know the London Sinfonietta is a registered charity (no. 255095)? Great discoveries rely on the commitment, generosity and vision of a passionate group of supporters. Our imagination is unlimited, but our funds are not, and income generated by ticket sales can only cover a portion of the costs associated with our concerts and the many other projects we run each year. Our Pioneers give invaluable support for brand new commissions, world premiere performances and ground-breaking programmes, ensuring that the London Sinfonietta remains at the forefront of new music.

Enjoy a close relationship with the London Sinfonietta as a Pioneer, whilst helping us achieve our ambitions from just £35 per year, less than £3 per month.

VAN DER AA: THE BOOK OF DISQUIETIN SEARCH OF THE EVER-ELUSIVE SELF

When Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa died in 1935 he left behind a trunk filled with unfinished and unpublished writings – a tantalising treasure trove of scribbled anecdotes and idle thoughts. Among these were the pages that make up his posthumous masterpiece The Book of Disquiet, an autobiography of his alter ego Bernando Soares. Michael van der Aa’s score transforms Pessoa’s collection of dream vignettes into a hypnotic work that mixes spoken word, performed by British actor Samuel West, with music, electronics and video, probing the true nature of the ever-elusive self. #BookOfDisquiet

POPPE: SPEICHER

MUSIC IS ALIVE

Much more than just a piece of music, Enno Poppe’s Speicher is a complex structure of variations and repetitions that pushes its 22 players to their interpretative and technical extremes. But it is just as immersive for its audience as it is for those on stage. Speicher is an adventure in active listening – gradually revealing clues as to what might be coming next through an unpredictable network of derivations. As we, too, become part of the unfolding music, so it truly comes alive. Developed over five years and premiered in Europe in 2013, this will be its landmark UK premiere. #MusicIsAlive

With an open brief to conceive new works with public participation at their very heart, two composers engage audiences in the creative process, through a ‘living sketchbook’. DUETS IN A FRAME

CREATING PARTNERSHIPS OLD AND NEW

London Sinfonietta has been in an extended duet with Sir Harrison Birtwistle for over 45 years, a relationship that has been reflected in an evolving series of commissions for pairs of Principal Players. This journey reaches its peak with the world premiere of Duets in a Frame, in which five of these duets are linked by a new chorale. As relationships with Tansy Davies and Francisco Coll also continue, so a new one begins – with a commission from Tom Coult, one of the most promising young voices of his generation, praised for his iridescent timbres and clear, articulate gestures. #DuetsInAFrame

Supported by London Sinfonietta Entrepreneur Sir Vernon Ellis and Animate with their public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Mobile New Music Festival – a day experimenting with new music and mobile technology.

Underline – working throughout the season on our commission from Art on the Underground, which will express the story of the Victoria line and its commuters through sound.

COMMISSIONSThe London Sinfonietta continues the important work of commissioning new pieces from both established and emerging voices.

Highlights of the season include new pieces by two composers showing huge promise for the future: Samantha Fernando and Tom Coult. We are commissioning Laurence Crane for the first time – a composer whose alternative aesthetic has a dedicated following in the UK and Europe. And we continue our relationship with Sir Harrison Birtwistle whose piece Duets in a Frame has evolved out of a series of duets composed for us across the past few years.
