APPOINTMENT BRIEF APRIL 2016

Page 2: London Youth Rowing - Chief Executive

2 Chief Executive | London Youth Rowing | April 2016

Thank you for your interest in becoming our next Chief Executive.

London Youth Rowing is a ground breaking charity with a mission to develop young people through physical activity and to open access to rowing at all levels. The charity is passionate about making fitness and rowing accessible to young people from all backgrounds across London, helping them to be physically active, develop their confidence and skills and to have fun in the process.

Using the power of sport, our work enables disadvantaged young people to develop their life skills and improve their physical, social and mental wellbeing. Through our programmes we work with over 8,000 participants every year, partnering with 130 schools and numerous clubs.

Indoor rowing continues to be a key point of access with schools and clubs, enabling those that would not normally have the opportunity to take part in rowing to try the sport for the first time.

Our competition programme provides an opportunity for the most talented participants to develop their rowing to the highest levels, while our life skills programmes aim to broaden aspirations and develop life skills through combining rowing and corporate mentoring.

With our most recent CEO, Matt Rostron, leaving after eight years to take up a new post in Boston, we seek a new CEO to develop, promote and lead the organisation through its next period of growth. To achieve this you will need to be passionate, driven and ambitious about helping improve the lives of young people living in disenfranchised communities across London. You will be supported by a robust and well networked Trustee Board, an expanding and generous supporter base and a committed team of staff.

In this appointment brief, you will find information about our work, our structure and our plans for the future. You will also find specific details on our current requirements and information on how to apply for this exceptional opportunity.

WELCOME

Jim Downing, Chair

London Youth Rowing (LYR) was founded on the belief that rowing and other forms of physical activity promote whole-life health benefits, including self-development, teamwork and enhanced self-esteem. We work to make these benefits accessible to young people from all backgrounds, abilities and walks of life.

We provide coaching, infrastructure and opportunities for indoor, outdoor and adaptive rowing, and other sports or activities, to improve the health, fitness and well-being of young people in the interests of social welfare. LYR works with people aged 11 to 18 in London who, by reason of their youth, disability or circumstances, would not otherwise have access to these activities.

Our dedicated coaches and development team aspire to help all our participants grow through sport to reach their true potential in their daily lives, hence our motto: ‘Making Champions Everyday’.

Indoor rowing Indoor Rowing continues to be the route through which many thousands of London’s young people gain their first experience of rowing. We have over the years developed Indoor Rowing into a sport in its own right, mainly through the provision of rowing machines and coaching support to a series of Satellite Clubs as part of the Satellite Hubs and Clubs (SHaC) project with Sport England.

On-Water Rowing LYR provides on-water rowing coaching at a total of ten clubs and centres across London including Thames Rowing Club (Wandsworth); Fairlop Water (Redbridge); Danson Lake (Bexley); London Regatta Centre (Newham); Globe Rowing Club (Greenwich); Surrey Quays Water Sports Centre (Southwark); University of London Boathouse (Hounslow); Thames Tradesmen Rowing Club (Hounslow) and Queen

Elizabeth Olympic Park (Hackney). LYR also embed performance coaches into two state secondary schools in London as part of our academies programme.

Life SkillsBreaking Barriers combines rowing activities with industry led skills and workshops, project management experience and mentoring. The activities are designed to engender life skills and increase our beneficiaries’ aspiration sets. The Breaking Barriers initiative empowers young people to build on the competencies learned from rowing. It is the step that enables progression from sport into further education, training and employment.

OUR CORE ACTIVITIES

Page 8: London Youth Rowing - Chief Executive

Satellites Hubs and Clubs (SHaC) This is LYRs largest participation programme working with 90 schools and 10 on-water centres across London. The SHaC initiative links a group of ‘Satellite’ indoor rowing clubs to a network of LYR affiliated on-water ‘Hub’ rowing clubs located primarily in state secondary schools across London. In 2015 a total of 71 satellite clubs and 3,720 young people participated during the year, of which 45% were girls, 66% where from a BME group and 4% considered themselves to have a disability.

Competition Rowing LYR creates and develops junior rowing sections at rowing clubs across London to ensure that young people have the opportunity to join and flourish in a professional rowing environment. Often embedded within existing rowing clubs, LYR junior head coaches are in place to make sure that young athletes are nurtured and coached to reach their full potential.

Through these successes, some of our ‘alumni’ athletes have been offered scholarships at universities in the UK and USA. Others have gone on to compete on national platforms including the GB trails, Junior World Championships and the Oxford Cambridge Boat Races – opportunities which would not have been possible without LYR.

Rowing AcademiesLYR operates an embedded rowing programme in two London state secondary schools: Mossbourne Community Academy and Brampton Manor Academy. Both these academies have an LYR head coach and access to LYR facilities and equipment.

The students who form part of these programmes all receive coaching at the same levels as their private school counterparts across the capital. They are inspirational role models to their younger peers and offer relatable role models in a typically exclusive sport. Both academies have very high educational standards and showcase the ability to combine the highest academic performance with competitive rowing. Both these academies are examples of the benefits that physical activity has on non-cognitive traits that are signposts to success in further endeavours.

Row4Results The Row4Results Initiative joins London Youth Rowing with Tideway, whereby LYR holds a series of indoor rowing events and competitions between boys and girls from years 7&8. It runs both in schools and community youth clubs across London. The programme aims to ensure that rowing is accessible to everyone irrespective of background or experience, and to connect Londoners with the Thames.

London Water Sports Centre Based in Newham, the London Water Sports Centre is a six lane, 2km stretch of clear water along the docks which offers a world class, safe place for young people from the local communities which surround Newham to take part in a range of water sports.

Complementing our SHaC on-water based sessions are a multitude of community based open access sessions throughout the summer, community courses and programmes, performance sessions and para-sports initiatives utilising the dock as a safe place for people to row.

OUR PROJECTS

Funding Sport England continues its essential support of LYR, enabling us to deliver the Satellites Hubs and Clubs initiative. We are also generously sponsored by Tideway, The Stewards Charitable Trust, London Borough of Newham, London Borough of Hounslow, Team Watersports, British Rowing, The Boat Race Company, Oxford Cambridge Rowing Foundation, APAP, LLDC, CVB, Royal Docks Trust and a number of other trust, foundation, corporate, statutory, individual and event donors.

Breaking Barriers In 2014, LYR launched an important new initiative, Breaking Barriers, which is based around our long held belief that the disciplines gained through rowing (team work, discipline, resilience, confidence) can lead to employability, educational attainment and more general life skills. Starting as a pilot sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers with 12 young people from two London boroughs, PWC provided funding, volunteers and mentors for the programme that on all counts was a great success.

This project has demonstrated its ability for considerable momentum and in its second iteration, it has been extended to over 60 participants with new funding partners, mentors and volunteers from both the public and private sector to help us deliver this project and others to follow.

LYR Apprenticeships In 2016, LYR will launch an apprenticeship programme. This initiative is a coach development programme aimed at supporting young people through professional coaching qualifications. The programme aims to open up access to professional coaching qualifications for young people, broaden the reach of LYR by mobilising additional coaches in our rowing centres and establish LYR as an accredited training provider.

FUNDING & NEW DEVELOPMENTS

National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC)This competition is LYR’s flagship annual event, and in 2016 we hosted 2,079 competitors making it the world’s largest indoor rowing competition for junior competitors. Now in its tenth year, NJIRC offers an accessible platform for young athletes between 11 and 18 to compete at a national level. Young athletes came from as far afield as Plymouth and the Isle of Wight to compete.

Every known barrier to entry is removed through: subsidised entry fees, transport support and travel assistance where required, full adaptations where required for those with disabilities, and targeting entries from clubs and schools that do not typically compete in rowing events.

The event is co-hosted with The Boat Race Company and the event is certainly enhanced by having these links to the Boat Race.

London Youth Games Since 2006, LYR has not only re-introduced on-water Rowing as one of the events featured in the annual London Youth Games, but also has initiated Indoor Rowing as a new, and very popular, featured sport. In 2010 we piloted an Adaptive Rowing event for young people with disabilities, which became a fully point scoring event in 2011.
