Every spring, LOOKatOKC pours a huge amount of energy into two major music events, South By Southwest and the Norman Music Festival, but we’re not just music adven-turists searching for sonic thrills. There are solid and sim-ple reasons for this level of enthusiasm. The success and population density of Oklahoma musicians at SXSW and

the concentration of talent at NMF speak to how far the state’s music scene has come, both in how it’s evolved and how it’s seen by outsiders.

A little over a decade ago, the number of Oklahoma musicians playing SXSW in Austin could be counted on two hands or less. And while one of those bands was usually The Flaming Lips, it was hard to justify full coverage of the festival with only a handful of homegrown acts playing.

But the Buff alo Lounge, a concerted ef-fort on the part of commercial, non-profi t and state-funded groups to promote modern Oklahoma culture, changed the dynamic by providing a one-stop showcase for Oklaho-mans, dramatically expanding the possibilities for state artists to play on Sixth Street. This year, the Buff alo Lounge is even bigger, having relocated to the 512, a two-level bar that allows two separate stages to operate simultaneously, eff ectively doubling the opportunities to see Oklahoma musicians at any given time. No other state has such a concentrated show-case for its talent, and to see something even remotely similar, you’d have to go down the street to the British Music Embassy.

And Oklahoma’s omnipresence at SXSW is not limited to the Buff alo Lounge — not by a long shot. Just read Kerry Myers’ column on Page 8, which lists all the showcases for Oklahoma acts beyond the 512. The list is huge: take into account all the acts both inside and outside Buff alo Lounge, and it comes to around 80 names. It gives us enormous pride to see so many performers getting a chance to show what they can do in front of thousands of record label representatives, industry professionals and fans. It speaks to the deep pool of talent in Oklahoma and the level of perseverance and dedication on the part of tireless pro-moters such as the Idea Collective.

So that’s why we go to Austin, fi ght the traffi c, crash on friends’ couches and coast on minimal sleep and sustenance. Just seeing and hearing what Oklahoma musicians are doing and how they impact the world’s perception of our state makes all the exhaustion and ringing ears worth it. So read about all the events at lookatokc.newsok.com, check out the videos at static.newsok.com, get the absolute latest personal notes at blog.newsok.com/staticblog, and interact with us on our Twitter feed, @lookatokc — we will take you directly to the sound of Oklahoma’s future.

h, South By. We meet again. I learned last year that walking the streets of downtown Austin dur-

ing South By Southwest —the planet’s largest

annual music-biz gathering— is sort of like browsing a never-ending buff et line. In order to truly enjoy it, you’ve got to accept that it’s just impossible to do it all. Try to stuff yourself (so to speak) and you’ll wind up an exhausted and sun-burned wreck, passed out somewhere in the middle of Sixth Street to be victim-ized by whatever ungodly P.R. stunt or outré performance artist (or worse — Andrew W.K.) happens upon your dehydrated, broken body. So to avoid that fate, I’ve done my darndest the last few weeks to fi nd out who’s playing and to prioritize just how badly I want to see them. I’ll be hang-ing out with my LOOKatOKC comrades George Lang, Kerry Myers and Adam Kemp and the 44 Oklahoma bands playing the Buff alo Lounge Tuesday and Wednesday, but after that, all bets are off and I’m roaming the festival like a kid in a mall full of candy stores. Since SXSW’s my annual chance to hear a bunch of bands I otherwise wouldn’t get to, sleep’s going to be near the bottom of the priority list for the next few days. Here’s who I’m trying to see.

The Joy FormidableThursday 4 p.m., Waterloo Records Day Party Austin’s iconic record store always books some terrifi c bands and this year’s no exception. Somebody linked me to The Joy Formidable’s “This Ladder is Ours” on Soundcloud a few months back and I got immediately hooked by the young band’s post-power pop big-ness. They’re going to be great on the Main Stage at Norman Music Festival next month, but I’m going to try to get a sneak preview of how some of their thrashier songs like “Little Blimp” sound live.

Action BronsonFriday, Vice Magazine Showcase There’s a special place in my heart for rude, portly rappers and Action Bron-son occupies most of it right now — the dude from Queens, NY just can’t seem

to use anything but food or cooking in his metaphors. To drizzle it all with the vinaigrette, Bronson teamed up with the walking-talking-rapping human buzz machine RiFF RAFF to —against all odds— make one of my favorite rap songs last year in “Bird on a Wire.”

PallbearerWednesday, Pitchfork Presents: Show No Mercy Don’t tell the Oklahoma acts, but I may just try to sneak away from the Buff alo Lounge sometime Wednesday afternoon to go catch some epic riding-the-backs-of-dragons metal (credit for description goes to Gentle Ghost guitarist Brady Smith, who fi rst told me about Pall-bearer). “Sorrow and Extinction” proved 2012’s critically fashionable metal record with some throwback Dio-style melodic-skyward-screaming vocals and colossal

riff after colossal riff . “The Legend” is just as awesome as its title.

The Whole Mass Appeal Friday Rap Showcase

First, welcome back Mass Appeal! Second, holy ghost of Tupac Shakur this is an amazing lineup of dude rappers playing Austin Music Hall. You’ve got a couple legendary veterans in Bun B and Pusha T, two of the game’s best young stylists in Danny Brown and Kendrick Lamar, and some easy buzz in Joey Bada$$ and ASAP Ferg. Oh, and one of last year’s best hip-hop albums in Roc Marciano’s “Reloaded” too.

SolangeFriday, Hype Machine Showcase If you think Solange is the poor man’s Beyoncé, then I hate you. Last year’s “True” EP was one of the most pleasant, soothing, and thoughtful pieces of pop music I’ve heard in a long time and I’m looking forward to hearing “Losing You” in person.

Night BedsThursday, Dead Oceans Showcase Since my favorite new country band Mount Moriah’s chosen to eschew South By this year I’m going to make up for it by checking out some lap-slidin’ folk from Night Beds. They are like Fleet Foxes with Southern twang.

Parquet CourtsSaturday, Viceland Showcase I’m still kicking myself for missing this Brooklyn-via-Texas punk act’s Decem-ber show at Bad Granny’s Bazaar, so I resolved to make up for it by buying its (awesome) record “Light Up Gold” and catching it at South By.

Music festival season has arrived, and as LOOKa-tOKC editor George Lang

announced in the last issue, most of LOOKatOKC’s writing team will be attending South By Southwest this year, getting in the middle of all the action. More and more Oklahomans fl ock to Austin for Spring Break each year, and Austin is beginning to no-tice all the noise from the north. I applaud these musicians who have made it onto an offi cial SXSW showcase — this year we will have more than 80 talented musicians representing this great state. If you have an iPhone or an Android you should be able to download the offi cial SXSW app with guides to tons of music, fi lm and interac-tive events, but the following is the guide that isn’t going to show up in your handy-dandy SXSW app: it’s 100 percent Oklahoman. I did not include many of Oklahoma Film & Music’s Buff alo Lounge schedule, it can be found by visiting www.buff alolounge.com. Make that your home base.

Time to brighten up that spring wardrobeL A C E Y L E T Tlooks in okc

“Looks in OKC” focuses on fashion — inside and outside of Oklahoma.

LACEY LETTWhy do we do it to ourselves? Many of us spend up to two

hours in the mirror to get ready for our weekend plans. We put on the fake lashes, lather ourselves in lotion, pluck every little stray hair from our eyebrows, and work on the perfect blow out for our hair. Once that is done we head to the dreaded closet where you just “don’t have anything to wear.”

This usually happens right about now, when spring is upon us and we are sick and tired of our winter wardrobe, but haven’t quite made it to the full spring apparel. So how do you transi-tion into spring using what little warm-weather clothes you have?

I recently had one of my all-time favorite local stylists, Shan-non Schroeder, go through my closet with me to fi nd ways to add kitchy hip styles to the boring old clothes I’ve had for years. It opened my clothing racks to all new possibilities.

Pull out that maxi dress you had last year and pair it with a sweater. That might sound like it will turn into a big mess, but it can be super-cute, and all of the local boutiques around town are full of spring fashions, maxi dresses included. If it’s a bright maxi dress, choose a more subtle sweater, or vice versa. You can always pair your long dress with a leather jacket or jean jacket for a more casual look. Just make sure the jacket is more form-fi tting so you can show off some curve.

Fun, bright-patterned tights are here to stay, and you can pair them with those cute dressy shorts you’ve been dying to pull out all winter. Shorts aren’t just for working out. They come in so many fun styles, it’s diffi cult not to fi nd the perfect one for your personality. Think of shorts as the new dress pant. You can also wear a sweater with your shorts, which is my favorite look. It’s got a classy bohe-mian feel to it.

You’ve kept your open-toe heels in hibernation through the winter, but now it’s time to get them out and pair them with some dress pants or dress shorts. You can even wear them with your long-sleeved dress if you like. It’s the perfect opportunity to get them worn in, and pants with open-toed, strappy heels are now offi cially OK.

While we’re on the shoes, now is a great time to pair your boots with dresses. Here’s how: short dresses or skirts look best with tall boots, long dresses look best with booties, and mid-length dresses with mid-length boots look best. You can get away with “shooties” with shorts and shorter dresses, as well.

Pastels, white jeans, and patterned pants are still big this year. If you’re going to go with the fl oral trend, bigger patterns are

becoming the more popular look this year. You’ll look less like a character from “Beverly Hills 90210” (the original cast) and more like wallpaper. Kidding! I haven’t gotten on board with the trend, but I see it looking super-cute on other people. You can wear sandals and a sweater with your spring jeans. You can also try that denim jacket as well with a V-neck t-shirt or blouse.

Pat yourselves and Mother Nature on the back. We sur-vived the cold temperatures, rain boots and static cling. Now it’s time to brighten up this world with some spring attire.

Pair a maxi dress, like this one from La Posh Style, with a sweater or form-fi tting jacket for an easy spring look. Photo provided.

album review ‘ K I D F A C E ’ – S A M A N T H A C R A I N

Her distinctive croon and literate lyrics are as potent as ever, but Oklahoma singer-songwriter Saman-tha Crain layers a palpable

vulnerability on “Kid Face,” her most autobiographical album to date.

With her third LP, Crain, 26, coura-geously channels her personal heart-breaks and breakthroughs into her usual poetic folk/rock, giving the 11 songs added emotional verac-ity. The Dale High School graduate’s music has always been imbued with earthy authenticity, but she uses personal experi-ence to hone her pen to an even fi ner point with “Kid Face.”

Crain wrote all 11 tracks and recorded them at producer John Vanderslice’s all-analog Tiny Telephone studios in San Francisco, which only boosts the rootsy warmth already inherent in her sound. The troubadour emanates

self-confi dence and determination with the fi rst single, the jangly folk kiss-off “Never Going Back.”

On the shuffl ing confessional “Taught to Lie,” the Shawnee native shows off her penchant for erudite and evocative lyrics like “If you take Anderson Road, you’ll fi nd a box that I have stowed / Behind an old Conoco sign that’s

shiny silver in the night / And in the box there is a stone and a little red rattail comb / And seven motel keys, and a sou-venir penny / Because I don’t forget the past.”

Her haunting vocals in-tertwine beautifully with Norman violinist Daniel Foulks’ gypsy fi ddle on “Paint,” and she and her

musical cohorts, including fellow Okla-homans Brine Webb, John Calvin and Kyle Reid, bring a delicate prettiness to the ponderous melancholy of “We’ve Been Found.” The tuneful cacophony they build up to with “Sand Paintings”

brings to mind late-era Beatles. With her baby face, old soul and

weathered alto, the title track with its themes of growing up and coping with disillusionment would probably reso-nate even without the intricate vocal performance she gives.

Crain also ruminates on the state of the world with the folky tracks “Ax” and “Somewhere All the Time,” but the best part of “Kid Face” is when she lets listeners get a good look inside her head.

album review ‘ P E O P L E , H E L L & A N G E L S ’ – J I M I H E N D R I X

For a guy who died in 1970, Jimi Hendrix has put out more albums in the last four decades than your average living guitar god who’s been around since then. His latest “essential new album,” as the accompanying public-ity describes it, is “People, Hell & Angels,” a collection of 12 recordings made outside of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience trio from 1968

through August 1970.Alternate versions of almost all of these songs have appeared on albums released

during Hendrix’s lifetime or posthumously, but these takes are previously unreleased and in most cases superior variants to what we’ve heard in the past. For example, the stripped-down rendition of “Earth Blues” is far funkier than the original heard on 1971’s “Rainbow Bridge,” with his Band of Gypsys part-ners Buddy Miles (drums) and Billy Cox (bass) laying down the solid bottom line.

“Somewhere” was fi rst heard on 1975’s controver-sial “Crash Landing,” when producer Alan Douglas had control of Hendrix’s recordings and was shamelessly overdubbing them with studio musicians. Here, a newly discovered version features Miles on drums and then-Buffalo Springfi eld guitarist Stephen Stills moonlighting on bass, while Hendrix tears it up cosmic-blues style with some wah-wah wildness.

There are some true rarities here, too, including the rollicking R&B steamroller “Let Me Love You,” with Hendrix allowing his old chitlin’ circuit partner Lonnie Youngblood to take the spotlight on vocals and sax while Jimi trots out his solid old soul licks. “Easy Blues” is a freewheeling instrumental jam featuring Hendrix’s superb Wood-stock ensemble of Cox, ex-Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and second guitarist Larry Lee, another old friend from the chitlin’ days.

And Hendrix trips on his R&B past once again when he adds tasty chops to the brassy “Mojo Man,” which features Albert Allen of the Ghetto Fighters on lead vocals.

Other unadulterated alternate-take highlights include a beautifully raw cover of Elmore James’ “Bleeding Heart” and a blues-drenched version of “Hear My Train A Comin’,” both recorded with Miles and Cox in their fi rst studio session together.

Just when you think you’ve experienced Hendrix, he surprises you all over again, 43 years later. — Gene Triplett, entertainment editor

album review ‘ T H E M E S S E N G E R ’ – J O H N N Y M A R R

After The Smiths broke up in 1987, guitar-ist Johnny Marr became more of a legend than an actual musical presence, choosing to take sideman jobs with Bryan Ferry, Talking Heads, Modest Mouse and The

The. When he did show up as an equal partner with New Order’s Bernard Sumner in the early 1990s pop duo Electronic, the project bore few of the stylistic emblems that made Marr the most revered guitar god of his generation. He never seemed to relish his ownership of one of modern rock’s greatest legacies: When he fi nally made 2003’s “Boomslang,” a solo album credited to Johnny Marr + the Heal-ers, the results sounded more like middling Oasis’ leftovers than the work of the man responsible for the ringing melodies of “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” “Heaven Knows I’m Miser-able Now” and “This Charming Man.”

But “The Messenger,” Marr’s new album, sounds like the kind of music Marr used to make. Beginning with

a great dramatic fl ourish on “The Right Thing Right,” whose starting fi gure echoes Marr’s opening fanfare from The Smiths’ “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before,” “The Messenger” sounds like nothing less than the album this guitarist should have released in 1989. His command of the melody and aesthetics that dominated his best work is front and center on the gorgeous “European Me,” and Marr taps into the swirl-ing beauty that marked his best work on “The Queen Is Dead” on “New Town Velocity.”

Not everything sounds like a throwback to Marr’s Smiths period. The title song and “Say Demesne” are propelled by subtle layers of electronics, something Morrissey could never really abide. And it probably goes without saying that Marr possesses neither the vocal nor the lyrical mastery of his former musical partner, but “The Messenger” underlines the musical ingredi-ents that have largely gone missing from Morrissey’s solo work.

Marr is doing almost nothing new, but the artis-tic divergences and side trips he took over the past quarter-century only frustrated those who knew he was capable of something greater.

“The Messenger” fi nally delivers on a long-deferred promise.

movie review ‘ J A C K T H E G I A N T S L A Y E R ’

Bryan Singer’s “Jack the Giant Slayer” takes a centuries-old fairy tale and makes it fresh, energetic and wide-eyed in a way that stays faithful to the spirit of magical storybooks but resizes the tale in all the right ways.

First and foremost, “Jack the Giant Slayer” is not in league with the spate of “dark reimaginings” of fairy tales that the major studios saw as a potential post-”Twilight” gold mine, movies such as “Red Riding Hood,” “Snow White and the Huntsman” and the ridiculous “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” which served up the Brothers Grimm with ironic dis-tance and creative defi cits. “Jack the Giant Slayer” is a deft combination of two separate-but-related stories, incorporating the sky-high fantasy of “Jack and the Beanstalk” and sweeping Arthurian adven-ture of “Jack the Giant Killer,” and the solid, earnest

script by Christopher McQuarrie never winks at the audience as it climbs onward and upward.

Jack (Nicholas Hoult of “X-Men: First Class” and “Warm Bodies”) is a young farmhand who has a chance encounter with the adventurous Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) on a visit to the King-dom of Cloister to sell his poor family’s horse in a bad deal for a handful of magic beans. As Isabelle rebels against the protective nature of her father, King Brahmwell (Ian McShane), her misadventures ultimately result in one of those beans taking root, sending the princess and the farm boy skyward on a towering, miles-high beanstalk.

What Jack encounters at the top of the stalk is an entire army of lumbering grotesque oafs led by General Fallon (voiced by Bill Nighy), a colossus with a smaller secondary head growing out of his collarbone. The arrival of mortal men in their realm

stirs up the giants, and Isabelle is captured. The cri-sis gives the king’s shifty courtier Roderick (Stan-ley Tucci) a chance to make a power grab, forcing Isabelle’s faithful knight Elmont (Ewan McGregor) and Jack to make another ascent to wage war with the giants.

Hoult approaches Jack with refreshing innocence and earnestness, characteristics that Singer does his best to evoke throughout the entire fi lm. The eff ects are better than most of the marketing for “Jack the Giant Slayer” might suggest — the motion-capture technology on the giants is impressive, and the computer animation on the beanstalk strongly conveys the idea of a massive, sky-high plant tower-ing over the kingdom. With a committed cast and a story that does justice to the folk tale, “Jack the Giant Slayer” off ers big surprises. — George Lang, LookatOKC editor

movie review ‘ O Z : T H E G R E A T A N D P O W E R F U L ’

With his enchanting adven-ture “Oz the Great and Powerful,” director Sam Raimi eventually manages to blaze his own trail down the Yellow Brick Road while

still respecting one of the most adored movies in cinema history.

The “Spider-Man” helmer’s “Wizard of Oz” ori-gin story stars James Franco (“127 Hours”) as Oscar “Oz” Diggs, skirt-chasing illusionist for the two-bit Baum Family Circus, the fi rst of many amus-ing and subtle references to L. Frank Baum’s “Oz” books and the beloved 1939 fi lm.

His former sweetheart Annie (Oscar nominee Michelle Williams) insists Oz has a good heart, but his aggrieved assistant Frank (Zach Braff ) and the strongman he’s cuckolded (Tim Holmes) would be unlikely to agree. Besides, Oz has no interest in becoming just another good Kansas farmer like An-nie’s new fi ance; he wants to be great — and prefer-ably rich and powerful to boot.

While fl eeing the strongman’s fury in a hot-air

balloon, Oz gets swept away in a fearsome tornado. As the fi lm slowly morphs from black and white to vivid color, the exotically shaped mountains, the enormous musical fl owers and the sharp-toothed fairies indicate he isn’t in Kansas anymore.

The fi rst person the fl imfl amming magician encoun-ters in this strange new land is the naive and fetching witch Theodora (Mila Kunis), who desperately wants to be good. She believes Oz has come to fulfi ll local prophecy about a great wizard bearing the name of the land who would free the people from the tyranny of the wicked witch and become the new king.

Not one to let the truth get in the way of his great and powerful aspirations, Oz lets Theodora escort him to the Emerald City, where he meets her suspi-cious older sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz), the royal adviser. While Theodora quickly trusts and falls in love with Oz, Evanora suspects he is a fraud and rapidly dispatches him to overthrow the bad witch.

Oz rescues a wisecracking fl ying monkey named Finley (voiced by Braff ) and a tougher-than-she-looks China Doll (voice of Joey King), and they become his companions on his mission. The quest

gets much more complicated when they realize that the witch they’ve been dispatched to defeat, Glinda (Williams again), is actually the good one, while Evanora is the conniving spell-caster who killed Glinda’s father, the previous king.

Glinda knows Oz is a selfi sh con-man, but she also thinks he might just have what it takes to rally the people to defeat Evanora and her horrible army of winged baboons, which are much scarier than the fl ying monkeys of old, particularly in well-rendered 3-D, and sure to terrorize young children.

Overthrowing the true wicked witch becomes even more daunting when Evanora manipulates her temperamental sister into becoming a green-faced crone, which Kunis turns into a worthy predecessor to Margaret Hamilton’s scenery-chewing antagonist.

The mythology gets a bit murky, and the decision to have Williams and Braff play roles in both Kan-sas and Oz feels arbitrary. But Raimi grants “Oz the Great and Powerful” enough magic to carry the day, and even better, prompt families and fi lm fans to re-unite with Dorothy and the original “Wizard of Oz.”

or many musicians making the annual pilgrimage to Austin this week for South By Southwest, packing up for a week or more away from home is as easy as pil-ing themselves, their equipment, and a maybe even a change of clothes in the back of a rusty van.

For Norman singer-songwriter Zach Winters, things won’t be that simple. “Well, he is going to Tulsa to stay with his grandparents,” said Lane Winters, Zach’s wife, nodding at their four-year-old son, Leif, who’s grinning and eating carrots at the dinner table in the family’s modest kitchen. “And Ramona’s coming with us to Austin.” Ramona’s a few days short of eight months old, and Win-ters said that she’ll probably spend most of their SXSW trip in the care of family friends whose downtown apartment he and Lane will also call home for most of the week. “We’re honestly pretty clueless about this whole thing,”

Winters, 29, said of their visit to Austin. It’s a common feeling to be overwhelmed by a fi rst visit to SXSW. Festival offi cials reported that nearly 20,000 people bought badges or wristbands in 2012 to see more than 2,200 bands play 104 SXSW-sanctioned stages. Throw in fellow artists, attendees of the fi lm and interactive festivals and unoffi cial visitors, and Austin is bursting at the seams with well over 300,000 extra people. SXSW is widely regarded as an annual “make or break” opportunity for musicians. Play the right shows for the right crowds in the spring and you could fi nd yourself on magazine covers, festival bills and magazine covers in the fall. Winters’ hopes for his band’s fi rst SXSW set assume far less than that, though. “We’re just honored to have been selected to play the Buff alo Lounge,” he said. “And that so many people have been able to take off work and make sac-rifi ces to get down there and play with us. That means a lot.”

Oklahoma’s foothold at SXSW, the Buff alo Lounge, is a collective brand created by the Oklahoma Film & Music Offi ce, the Idea Collective and the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber in 2010 to give small-time talent like Winters —who printed 1,000 copies of his 2011 album “They Were Longing for a Better Country” and distributed them mostly by himself — the opportunity to play for music business and media professionals as well as fans. His seven-piece band — of which Lane is a member — plays Wednesday night on the same bill as locals Parker Millsap, OK Sweetheart, Defi ning Times, Samantha Crain and Broncho. Even among these bands, Winters’ aesthetic is an anom-aly. It favors modesty and patience, his voice clear and high but never shrill, often aff ecting a gentle, sighing falsetto. His music’s unafraid of stillness and quiet, and is accented beautifully by the jangle of a mandolin and the quick slide of a hand across the polished neck of an acoustic guitar. This is all to say that it’s as out of place amid the bustle and chaos of South By Southwest as Iron & Wine playing Rocklahoma. A Zach Winters show is suited for the intimacy of a living room or coff ee shop, the latter of which is where Winters played the one proper warm-up show with his whole band that will precede its gig tomorrow night at the Buff alo Lounge’s Oklahoma-centric offi cial South By showcase. Last month, 50 or more friends and curious listeners packed into the tiny Second Wind Coff ee House on Norman’s Campus Corner to hear Winters, his wife Lane, and six of their friends play 10 songs. It’s fair, he admits, to divide most of his songs into two categories: Lane songs and God songs. Few if any songwriters in Oklahoma explore marriage and fatherhood with Winters’ clear-eyed earnestness. “I was totally unprepared for being a dad,” he said before an abrupt interruption by Leif, who announced that a set of eyes was in his room. Winters said it’s a reference to a bedtime story he’s been telling him. “When we’re done in here, I’ll tell you a story. Would you rather hear about Frodo and the ring? Or Rikki-Tikki-Tavi?” Leif chooses the latter before returning to his room. “Having Leif and now Ramona has taught me a lot about how God sees me, and how patient he is with me,” Winters said. When it comes to writing songs about one’s relationship with God in the Christian milieu, Winters’ words share more traits with Sufj an Stevens’ meek whispers than Bono or Marcus Mumford’s blustery, arms-up-to-the-heavens approach. “They Were Longing for a Better Country” listens at times like a mystic meditation (“And the Little Child”), a confession (“Small Boat”), straight-up wor-ship (“Glory from Ashes”) and a humble request (“Give Me Peace and Rest”) of a greater being. Winters says he’s written several new songs and intends to play three of them at his Buff alo Lounge set. While in Austin, he and Lane will also take advantage of the festival’s myriad resources for small-time artists. Beyond just shows, SXSW hosts dozens of panels, speakers and workshops (with titles like “Album Release Strategies for the 21st Cen-tury” and “Publishing in the Indie Era — Making a Living if Not a Killing”) for educational purposes that Zach and Lane Winters hope will help them as they release the next album. The Winters were also eff usive in their appreciation of the opportunity aff orded by the Buff alo Lounge. “They’re giving us a sense of community and a connection to something that otherwise would be overwhelming,” Lane said. “We’re very thankful for that.”
