When a band slides into that pop music sweet spot, that avenue where melody

seemingly becomes tangible and nothing but unfi ltered, collective bliss takes over, everybody in the room —from the band to the veteran sound guy to the entirety of the crowd— just knows it. Jessie Ware and her three-piece band probably made it there half a dozen times during the 13-song set I witnessed at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan two weeks ago —one of the band’s fi rst public performances on American soil — and each time the audience’s faces ranged from awe to excitement, and even to sheer disbelief at the sounds they were hearing. At 28, Ware’s something of a late bloomer in the pop music game, though she fi rst garnered notice in 2011 singing for the forward-thinking UK producer Sbtrkt. Her fi rst single, the lyrically cryptic “Strangest Feeling,” sounds like a twitchy Portishead mutation, much more Beth Gibbons than Jessie J. “Devotion” was released last year to critical acclaim and a few “best new artist”-type awards, but little

cash (sales were best in her native UK, peaking at No. 5 on the charts) or radio play. She’s signed to PMR Records, an imprint of the British giant Island Records designed to project on her that profi table quality “indie-ness,” but luckily her music is strong enough to cut through the marketing and deliver the pop goods, albeit quietly. Ware’s strength lies with a subtlety in her register that’s amplifi ed by her writing and production. If most countries’ pop charts are topped by starlets driving EDM-infl uenced 4/4 bulldozery (good indicators right now are Rihanna’s ubiquitous “Diamonds,” Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath” and Ke$ha’s maximalist hooky hit “Die Young”), “Devotion” is composed of breathy, nimble songs whose undertones brim with

relatable confl ict. “Don’t keep me with the kisses, there’s never any there when I need / it’s just that you can always make me feel like I’m slippin’ in way too deep” goes one verse on “Sweet Talk”. That’s some straight-up Motown-level relationship-going-south lyricism. And “If You’re Never Gonna Move” —titled “110%” until legal issues with a sample of Big Punisher’s “Dream Shatterer” forced Ware’s management to change it— employs a meter that Big Pun surely would have appreciated were it not for the infringement. (I should also mention that on stage, Ware exudes a certain endearing grace and humility that seems a genuine rendering of what Taylor Swift has now long faked. When a fan shouted that she was “perfect,” she blushed, replying “Oh

thank you! I actually had to cover up three spots right before I came out, but thank you!”) The good news is that Ware isn’t alone in this subtle, skillful pop music she’s recording. Carrie Battan of Pitchfork fi rst caught on to the trend in October with a column she titled “A Small Pop,” identifying other female artists who are “exposing the cracks between indie and mainstream” and, in so doing, making original music. I like to think of it as pop for the NPR set; folks who like their sounds carefully blended together and not mashed together the way Dr. Luke or Jeff Bhasker would produce them. Best known as Blue Ivy Carter’s aunt, Solange Knowles signed to Terrible Records (started by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor), which released her excellent 2012 EP “True,” a quirky, seemingly eff ortless set of songs highlighted by one track called “Losing You”. Its tropical, hazy ambience is a far cry from the more Beyoncé-like attempt at vintage R&B that Universal put out as the LP “SoL-Angel and The Hadley Street Dreams”. Sky Ferreira is still under the very large EMI tent, but the bigwigs seem to have fi gured out that she’s not much of a robotic Britney Spears prototype now, judging by the excellent single “Everything is Embarrassing” on her 2012 EP “Ghost.” Digging back into her earlier stabs at hits like “One” and “Obsession” produces more artifi ce than that truly joyful pop stuff , but “Embarrassing” has got enough of the goods that I’ll be anticipating the 20 year old’s 2013-set debut “I’m Not Alright.”

After reading Adam Kemp’s interview with Ferris O’Brien, I realized how much of my adult experience is wrapped up in the life-and-death struggle of The Spy, the unsinkable radio station Ferris O’Brien has nurtured for nearly 20 years. I know

for a fact that the very fi rst time I heard Blur’s “Girls and Boys” was while I was tuned into the scratchy, fading signal of KSPI-FM 93.7, so we’re talking 1995 at the latest. That’s an epoch in radio terms.

At that point, the best you could do was the corporatized version of alternative rock heard on 95X, so what Ferris was accomplishing on Oklahoma airwaves was something magical. Like Ferris, my taste for quality radio was formed in California: while he was getting his mind blown by KROQ in Los Angeles in the 1980s, I was undergoing my own musical conversion listening to Live 105 in San Francisco. By the time The Spy came around in central Oklahoma, I needed it — desperately.

I was constantly tuned into the original Stillwater-based version of The Spy, and I can still remember watching cars with “Spy” stickers rolling forward and backward at Oklahoma City intersections, trying to get the signal to come in better. I also recall the absolute horror of losing that station, the morning in 2000 when it became “Hot 93.7” and I was greeted by Celine Dion when I got into my car. And when it was miraculously reborn at 105.3 FM in 2002, I was honored to be part of its Sunday night lineup.

As Kemp writes in his story, after fi ve long years, this station was raised from the dead in 2009 by the sheer force of Ferris’ will, and it has not been easy to keep alive. But his tenacity and his close relationship with the Oklahoma City music scene only made The Spy stronger. He is a true believer and to use a fi lm term, he is our music supervisor. The Spy’s latest development, a broadcast home at KOSU that guarantees the station nightly statewide coverage, just shows that dedication to principles can result in a happy ending — even in radio.


Finally, it is that time of year, the time when bands are getting pumped up for Nor-man Music Festival and SXSW and the

energy is in the air. Local musicians are prepared to unveil what they have been working on all winter, and I can promise you will be satisfi ed with their diligent work.

I had the pleasure of watching these kids rock out last week, and wow — these bands are all comprised of teenagers who will prove to you that punk isn’t dead. They are hope for a new generation of garage rock, with a purpose. They think that ’90s fashion is vin-tage, they sound like the late ’70s, and they were born in the early

Like too many horror fi lms these days, “Mama” boasts some intriguing storytell-ing ideas, sets an often genuinely sinister atmosphere but prompts unintentional laughter and refl exive eye-rolling with its contrivances, jump scares and sudden

lapses in common sense on the part of its characters.With a fi nely developed lead turn by Jessica Chastain,

the rare Hollywood it-girl who lives up to the hype, and a daring ending that will at least get viewers talking, even if they hate it, director Andres Muschietti almost pulls off quite the creepy coup with his debut feature, which expands on his 2008 short fi lm of the same name.

Executive producer Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labrinyth”) leaves his indelible mark on the fi lm, with its grotesquely beautiful aesthetic and melding of psy-chological and supernatural terror, but “Mama” simply doesn’t have the depth or style of his best work.

The setup is chilling and timely: As the stock mar-ket crashes in 2008, a desperate moneyman (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, “Game of Thrones”) kills two of his colleagues and his estranged wife and fl ees with his daughters, Victoria, 3, and Lilly, 1.

After their car skids off the snowy highway and crashes in the woods, the despairing father takes

shelter with his children in a spooky abandoned cabin. It’s clear he plans to kill the girls and then himself, but before he can shoot Victoria, a mysterious being vio-lently stops him. With her glasses broken, the older girl can’t quite make out who or what helped her, and the younger is too young to understand.

Five years later, the father’s artist brother, Lucas (Coster-Waldau again) and his punk-rocker girlfriend Annabel (“Zero Dark Thirty” Oscar contender Chastain with short black hair, a Misfi ts T-shirt and enough dark eyeliner to outline a world map) keep paying a ragtag search team to look for his missing family. One fateful day, the team fi nds Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and Lilly (Isabelle Nelisse) fi lthy, feral and scrabbling on all fours but alive in the isolated cabin.

Although the children, particularly Lilly, act more like wild animals than humans, Lucas and Annabel fi nd themselves in an unlikely custody battle with the girls’ rich and imperious Aunt Jean (Jane Moff at). Sensing a career-making case study on his hands, the sisters’ scheming psychologist Dr. Dreyfuss, (Daniel Kash), conveniently off ers to put Lucas, Annabel and the girls up in a nice suburban home free of charge if he can have exclusive and unlimited access to the children.

It’s not the only convenient plot contrivance that moves the ghost story forward while reminding you

that no matter how eerie it gets, it’s just a movie.It shouldn’t take a doctoral degree to fi gure out that

the “Mama” whom the children credit with raising them during those missing years isn’t just some fi g-ment of their imaginations. Ominous fl ocks of moths, strange noises in the girls’ closet and oozy black holes in the walls are telltale signs that Victoria and Lilly weren’t alone and that the fi erce being that watched over them has followed them to suburbia.

When a convenient coma puts Lucas in the hospital, Chastain gets to show her stuff , convincingly morphing her sullenly self-centered rocker grrrl into a protective mother fi gure. The child actors also give credible turns as the lost little girls trying to adapt to a more normal life.

But their performances can’t quite anchor Muschiet-ti’s wildly uneven fi rst fi lm. Unfortunately, he counter-acts moments of fi lmmaking brilliance — particularly, a lingering, elegantly executed shot of Annabel busily doing chores while Lilly enthusiastically plays tug-o’-war with a companion who mostly stays tantalizingly just out of frame — with examples of sheer horror movie stupidity — notably, at least two seemingly bright characters’ decisions to venture into the fright-ening remote woods in the dead of night. — Brandy McDonnell, entertainment writer
