Greeting and prayer: Hymn 296 (hymn sheet): Speak, O Lord, Thy Servant Heareth Announcements Activity committee meets today The July-September activity committee is asked to meet between services this morning. Why the confusion? One question which continually crops up is, Why are there so many different churches?St. Paul points out in 1 Cor. 3 that at least part of the reason is that people lose sight of the one true foundation on which faith is built, that is Jesus Christ. Another question for us is, Are we focusing above all on that foundation. We will look at this topic in more detail in our Wednesday Bible class. Everyone is welcome online or in person. Council notes... Finances: Offerings for June were $12,000 over budgeted needs and the balance of available funds increased by $4,500. For the fiscal year offerings were $190,000 over budgeted needs. The Lord has blessed us incredibly! May we be good stewards of all His gifts. Church windows: The new windows are scheduled to be installed on Wednesday. Parsonage: The phone landline is still down. A new stove is arriving this week. Mowing help: Volunteers are still needed for the remainder of the mowing season. Voters meeting next week The quarterly voters meeting is set for next Sunday after second service. This meeting is especially important for several reasons: Since April s meeting was canceled, there is catch-upwork, including approving the budget for the fiscal year which began July 1. Annual elections for church board positions will also be held. Another agenda item will be a discussion of how best to put our financial surplus to use in the Lords kingdom. Pick up your agenda today. The meeting will be held in the sanctuary. There will be no refreshments served. Friendship Sunday and picnic Sunday July 26 is our annual Friendship Sunday and church picnic. Do you know someone whom you could invite to join us in hearing the news everyone needs during these uncertain, turbulent times? The picnic will be held at Lions Legend Park, Franklin. Speaking the TRUTH

cross as full payment for our spiritual deafness and neglect of Your Word, calm our troubled hearts, lift our spirits, and renew our love and desire to serve You.

Bless our reading, hearing, and study of Holy Scripture this week. May we make time with You the priority and look forward to it as the best time of the day. Through it strengthen our trust in Jesus as Lord of all and our Savior from sin and death.

According to Your will, give healing to the sick. Help us to appreciate health as a gift from You and to take good care of body and life through proper diet, exercise, and medical care.

Preserve our government and in Your mercy provide honest, capable, courageous, and faithful leaders. Forgive us for complaining about the authorities instead of supporting their offices and praying in their behalf.

Graciously receive our offerings, imperfect though they are. Help use them to Your glory in making disciples of all nations and in building up the faith of those who already call You their heavenly Father.

We thank You, Lord, for pleasant summer weather and opportunities to enjoy Your creation. May they remind us of even better things to come in the new heaven and earth where there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Hymn 781 (hymn sheet): Preach You the Word

Benediction:

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing hymn 738 LSB (hymn sheet): Lord of All Hopefulness

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful by nature. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will.

C: Amen.

Prayer of the Day

P: Lord God, we hear voices proclaiming false peace and promising abundant blessings in exchange for our lip service and loving intentions. Open our ears to hear the severity of Your Law and open our hearts to be overwhelmed by the mercy You offer because of the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Love Always Speaks the Truth I. The hard truth, not sweet lies II. The truth of peace in Christ

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Plain type Cong: Underlined, boldface type

Dear Lord God: Your mercies are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness! We praise You for another day of grace and this precious time to hear Your Word of truth.

Forgive us for the many times we have been too busy with earthly matters to hear You calling us to repentance. We have often listened to what we wanted to hear rather than take to heart what we really need to hear. With the truth of Jesus’ sacrifice on the 3

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn 421 (hymn sheet): Come, Follow M e, the Savior Spake

Sermon: Jeremiah 28:5-9

Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who stood in the house of the LORD, and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! The LORD do so; the LORD perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the LORD’S house and all who were carried away captive, from Babylon to this place. Nevertheless hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms—of war and disaster and pestilence. As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the LORD has truly sent.”

Epistle lesson: Romans 6:1-11 Raised to new life in Christ, we want nothing more to do with sin.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel lesson: Matthew 10:34-42 Following Jesus brings conflict, at times even within families.

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.” P: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it.
