JANUARY 2019 NEXT SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS JANUARY 21ST St. Andrew is usually quite a busy church. It seems like we have a different special event going on if not every week, at least every two weeks. But sometimes it’s the regular opportunities that become the places where bonds get formed and folks find a good sense of friendship and com- munity. By our usual standards, Janu- ary looks a little bare. Yes, Brian Ganz is playing on Sunday the 13 th at 4:00 pm. Brian plays at Strathmore for $150 per ticket, but he shares his music with us for $20 per adult while kids are free. I know that a lot of our kids are involved in athletics, but if they have any interest in music, make coming to Bri- an’s concert a big priority. All profits from the concert will benefit Loudoun Hunger Relief. Brian being the ex- ception, there are no other special events in January, which means that you might be a part of some regular gatherings. Here are some suggestions: Join the choir!!!! The choir did such a fantastic job with their Christmas Cantata. Yes, they worked hard at it, but it was all very fun. I’ve been to enough rehearsals to know that we struggle to practice enough because there is so much laughter going on. But the practice is superb. Zack is an amazing director. He is a treasure trove of insight and knowledge. And he helps everyone to get better – from beginner to experienced singer. Choir rehearsal goes from 7:00 – 8:30 pm on Wednesdays starting again on January 2 nd . Take a parenting class at the Wednesday Family Night!!! We start meeting for a prepared supper, friend- ly talk, kids’ activities in- cluding the children’s choir on Wednesday, January 9 th . After dinner is done, an Ac- tive Parenting class is being started. Its goal is to help foster our kids so that they gain courage and wisdom for life, without forgetting the grace of making time for fun and play. This video-based course helps parents discern what their kids are really seeking, but not necessarily in the best ways. By gaining insight, parents can respond to crises as guides of encour- agement, setting up bounda- ries that help your kids flour- ish. The St. Andrew Ringers rehearse on Thursday eve- nings at 7:15. Talk with Zoe Sowers to find how you might best join the group. New Song practices at 8:45 am on Sunday mornings in the Music Room. Check with Laurie Barbagallo about which Sundays. Be a part of a small group. There will be an adult Sun- day School meeting before worship each Sunday in Jan- uary. Child care is available as requested. The Men’s Group meets for breakfast at 8:00 am the first Saturday of Looking Ahead to Ordinary Times Rappin’ with the Rev by Pastor Dave Milam the month, which will be Jan- uary 5 th . First Place for Health which focuses on spir- itual approaches to healthy eating habits meets on Mon- days at 7 pm. The St. Andrew Book Club meets the fourth Saturday of the month in vari- ous homes at 7:30 pm. This month’s reading material is Leadership in Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Good- win. Check the bulletin for who is this month’s hostess. The Brunch Bunch meets the second Monday of the month, January 14 th , in the Youth Lounge at 10:00 am. They use the annual study from Nation- al Presbyterian Women as their guide. Would you like to read the Bible in 2019? I’m going to try reading it from cover-to- cover. Diane Agbenyo, our Administrative Assistant, will be sending out the first 21 chapters of Genesis to you during January 1-7, three chapters a day. By the end of the week, write back to her so that she can continue to send out the readings to you over the course of the year. Make it a priority to worship each week. When we say that Christ is our center, we can fulfill that purpose by meeting together for worship. I will be away December 30 th and Feb- ruary 3 rd on vacation. (I’m getting to baptize grandson George at New York Avenue Presbyterian in DC on the 30 th . I’m not yet sure where I will worship on February 3 rd , but I’ll find blessing going some- where.) Enjoy what the liturgical cal- endar calls Ordinary Time in January. It’s that time when we put decorations away, try to have a good start on the new year and find good patterns and rhythms to live by. Yours in Christ, Pastor David Milam This group of intrepid carolers visited Tom and June Hutchison and Betty McNair on December 9th.
