Dear Friends,

I want to tell everyone how proud I am to be president of Furry Friends and of our place in Clark County. We are a steadfast and diligent organization. We can never stop because the flow of cats never stops. We are a revolving door. We bring cats in. We adopt cats out. In and out.

Every day we live with the reality that we cannot save/rescue/help every cat presented to us because we have limited income (for medical, food and shelter), space (for cats to roam the house freely and safely), and volunteers (critical to our existence), but for those we have saved/rescued/helped we have made a difference in their life. I want to tell you about a couple of these cats.

As you should all know, once a cat comes to Furry Friends it stays with us until a forever home is found, this could be days or years. And no matter the condition they arrive in they are ours to care for and love.

Lillian, Siamese mix, came to us Oct 2016 and caught us by surprise. The people that found her thought she was maybe 1–2 years old, but during the intake exam it was determined she was at least 14 years old. She was given a full health exam and senior blood panel and we found she had major health issues. Most urgent was her high blood pressure which was threatening her eyesight and her life if we hadn’t caught it and treated it when we did. Everyone loved her and smothered her with affection. But the hope that she at 14 years with so many medical issues, would ever find a forever home was pretty slim. We started looking for a permanent foster home where she would have one-on-one attention and peace and quiet. Much to our surprise Mary Lee and Jerry

from Astoria found her on our Petfinder.com page. They have a heart for senior cats and ended up adopting her with all her medical problems and taking her home to Astoria in February. What a cause for celebration!

Carlos came to us Feb 2016 due to a medical issue in his family that required them to rehome him. He weighed in at 20 pounds and was pretty intimidating. We really should have asked more questions and not taken him because he was known to bite and unfortunately several of our volunteers were bitten by him over the months. But he was handsome and as we worked with him some of the volunteers could play with him and pet him, but we still had to be careful. He was segregated from the other cats and he never went to the adoption center or the cat shows. We were trying to work with him, but we just couldn’t trust him. A year later his original owner saw our posting of Carlos on Facebook and that we still had him. They immediately contacted us and wanted to adopt him back. The family issue was resolved which allowed them to take Carlos back home. They knew about his behavior and apparently he had always been this way and they were okay with that! This was the best thing for Carlos and we were all so happy that he could go back home where he was understood and loved anyway!

Kahlulu, aka Tallulah, whose story is on page 2, caused me a bit of stress. She came in Aug 2016. She had some issues with peeing inappropriately and at our house she was always outside on the catio. We kept a watch for the peeing and as winter approached much to our dismay, she still stayed outside most of the time. All winter long you could find Kahlulu on

the bench buried under a pile of blankets. We tried bringing her inside but she would just go back out the cat door and find her bed. I was worried that she wanted to be an outside cat and Furry Friends endorses indoor only! What to do? Thankfully one fine day in April, David came in and met her and the rest is history as written on page 2. This little princess has her daddy wrapped around her little paw!

Each and every one of these little four-legged, furry lives are so precious and when a cat presents us a challenge, whether it is age, health, or behavior it means so much when humanity surprises us with an open heart and open eyes that can see beyond the here and now and into the true character of the cat.

Thank you to our sponsors for their continued support:

Tallulah and David HicksFrom ‘Kahlulu’ to ‘Tallulah’

From Kahlulu to Tallulah may not seem so great a change, but for one fabulous feline, having waited oh-so-long for her Prince Charming, it changed her entire cat world.

From the shelter of Furry Friends to the sanctuary of a fur-ever home, this kiss-able kitty’s dream had finally come true.

“I saw her on Petfinder in December 2016,” explains real life Prince Charming, David Hicks, “and when I revisited the site in April 2017, I was surprised to see that sweet face still there. Her face is what drew me in. I had a Calico cat (also a

“She’s also a happy blend of affection and independence. A lap kitty for my housemate, she lets me pick her up and snuggle her while she purrs and purrs. She also enjoys padding over to me to get to my water glass or leading me from one room to another. To satisfy her independent side, there’s a glassed-in porch where she can watch the squirrels and the birds.

And when this kitty’s kingdom (or is that queen-dom?) settles down for the night?“ She has two humans to choose from, and as far as I can tell, she divides her time equally between us!”

rescue) with similar markings more than 10 years ago, and she was an angel.

“I changed her name from Kahlulu to Tallulah because it sounded more glamorous to me. And she is glamorous. She’s also the queen of hearts and the sovereign of all she surveys because I accepted — without hesitation — Furry Friends’ stipulation that she remain an only pet. And I’m more than happy with that. Now, when people say, ‘David, she’s going to be lonely. You HAVE to get another cat!’, I can honestly say it was part of the agreement.

“Tallulah’s adjustment to her new home was immediate, and I feel very fortunate because I had a similar experience with my previous Calico. Her sweet presence makes everything feel better, and while she’s mostly a laid back lady, she does have her playful moments when she goes zipping round the house.

“I haven’t yet found a toy — either a feather wand, laser light, even a rolling ball — that excites her enough to interact with me. Not Tallulah! She gets more excited by a stray leaf that’s worked its way into the living room.

Parking Lot Funding Furry Friends has been in our new home for seven months now and we can’t begin to tell you how happy the kitties and volunteers are to have our own place. We have two more major projects: adding a large parking lot on the southwest side of the property; and installing a sidewalk along the front of the property (which is required by the city). We have been working for months with an architect and a civil engineer on these plans which are almost complete. With only $19,000 left in our building fund, our goal is to raise $30,000 more to pay for these projects. We are asking for your help with this unavoidable expense. Would you contribute $50 or $100 to help us raise enough money?

Mailing Address 6715 NE 63rd Street, Suite 450, Vancouver, WA 98661 Message 360-993-1097 Web furryfriendswa.org
