Looking to the future with hope Your unwavering commitment to support the most vulnerable people in our community ensures Centacare is there when families most need help. Your gift gives people like Leanne* a chance for a better future. When Leanne left her abusive husband after 17 years, she feared for her life and that of her children. She fled with nothing – too afraid and ashamed to ask family for help or support. Domestic violence happens in silence. Victims struggle to come to terms with the fact that their life-partner is abusive. The statistics on this are frightening. In Australia, one woman per week is murdered by her current or former partner. Domestic and family violence plays a part in more than seventy per cent of cases involving the death of a child. When Leanne reached the safety of Centacare emergency housing, she also received access to counselling for herself and both her children. She had a dedicated caseworker to help her rebuild her life, navigate the justice system and find permanent accommodation. Because of generous support like yours, for the first time in decades, Leanne can look to the future with hope. Your support enables Centacare to reach out in compassion through services like domestic violence support, psychiatric counselling, family support, hospital chaplaincy and prison ministry. *Names and images have been changed to protect the privacy of our clients.

Giving local children the love of a Catholic community

Many local children are living through significant hardship and family breakdown. These families have been pushed to the sharp edges of society, socially and economically. Their stories are all different, but what they share in common is the deep desire for a Catholic education for their children.

Some of these are single-parent families who have survived domestic violence; some are refugees, newly arrived in Australia; others are families that have endured debilitating trauma or illness. In a life that has been unbearably cruel, your gift will provide the acceptance, love and care these children need to heal and thrive despite adversity.

Your donation will provide bursaries for tuition, fees and camps for each year of a child’s primary or secondary schooling. The school itself provides a computer and a uniform. Because of you, they are given everything they need to be ‘just like’ their school mates.

We have already received a large number of applications for bursaries in 2021 – we know the economic crisis following COVID-19 will mean an unprecedented number of requests for support. Your gift helps us care for the most vulnerable children in our local community; it brings each child one step closer to reaching their full potential.

At the heart of Mary MacKillop’s vocation was the belief that every child

deserves a faith-based education, especially

those from families living in hardship.

Your donation enables a vulnerable child to realise

their potential.

Bringing families back to parishBuilding a strong connection to their church in our youth is essential to ensure the future of our Catholic faith. It is this need that drives the Moorooka Salisbury parish’s Youth and Family Mass Initiative.

In 2020, the parish received vital funding through the Annual Grants Program to invest in this new initiative. Your donation to support the Annual Catholic Campaign means they can continue to meet young people and families in places of faith and connect with them in a meaningful way.

Mr Daniel Ibbott, the Youth and Family Mass Coordinator says, “the success and growth potential of this Mass and its youth membership is already evident. A Youth Band has been organised along with a Youth Choir; with musicians and singers regularly committing to participate. Youth and young adults have offered their talents at other Parish Sunday Masses, by participating as Ministers of the Word,

as cantors, and facilitating the Parish’s Monthly Children’s liturgies.”

Parish priest, Father Dan Redhead, expressed his thanks to donors who support the Annual Grants Program. “Through the funding received from the Annual Grants Program we hope to nurture young people’s spirituality through musical expression. Support from the program means more Catholic youth and young families will be drawn back to practise their faith within the community.”

The Parish has also been able to appoint a Parish Youth Coordinator, Nick Kelly, who is excited to see what this new position will mean for the parish. “This program supports present and future generations of our Church. Despite 2020 being a turbulent year, we are making progress in creating an authentic space for young people to feel like they belong in our Catholic Church today”, Nick said.

Through the Annual Grants Program, you support

remarkable organisations, ministries and individuals that serve our Church and

strengthen our community. Guided by an evolving

assessment of community needs, this program attempts to do the most good, in the most

efficient way possible.

Most Reverend Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane

The Annual Catholic Campaign is all about what Pope Francis calls the ‘revolution of tenderness’. All about the coming of God’s Kingdom when dark powers seem to reign. Through our gifts to the Annual Catholic Campaign, we focus on what really matters, which means focusing on Jesus.

St Paul says to us “Life for me is Christ.” For us too, life is Christ - the Christ who says to us “as long as you did this to one of these, the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:45). We focus on them in order to focus on Him who is our life.

The Campaign focuses on four different ways of working for God’s revolution of tenderness:

• The MacKillop Fund which provides Catholic education bursaries to local children whose families are suffering severe hardship.

• Holy Spirit Seminary which provides formation for our future priests who will need strong preparation for the ministry of leadership that awaits them in changing times.

• The Priests Foundation which supports the retired, elderly and ailing priests who have spent their lives in service of God’s people and who remain a vital part of the Archdiocese.

• Centacare which reaches out in compassion through services like domestic violence support, psychiatric counselling, family support, hospital chaplaincy and prison ministry.

Each of these works is a powerful sign of our cooperation with the God who is near to us, who knows our needs and enters into our suffering. The God who bears our burdens and heals our wounds.

Thank you for your commitment to this work.

As always in the Lord,

The Catholic Foundation is grateful for the support of a generous anonymous donor who partially funded the production of this brochure.

Ensuring the future of our faith is in good hands

“I can never thank my parents enough for the love and care they raised me with. Or for the love of the Church they instilled in me from a young age.”

For William Aupito Iuliano, the calling to priesthood was a gradual one. The seed was planted by Sister Doreen at his childhood parish, “a wonderful lady who saw something in me, and was always telling me that I was destined for the priesthood.” He was naturally drawn to a life of faith and service.

It was during his time at Canali House, where he was given a live-in experience of discernment that he truly became committed to the calling God placed in his

heart. Now, nearing the end of his seminary formation, William knows his journey is just beginning.

“Father Frank reminds us that the true formator is the Holy Spirit, and that every step of our lives has been ordained by God. I am a bit fearful of what lies ahead, but I am also looking forward to being a leader and spiritual advisor to the people I am called to serve.”

Holy Spirit Seminary is the provincial seminary for Queensland and is dedicated to the theological and pastoral education and formation of our future priests. Your prayers and support make it possible for seminarians to take the Word to the world.

With your support of Holy Spirit Seminary, you

provide a home for the formation and education of future priests for our faith.

Providing a joyful and dignified retirement for our priests

Your generosity through the Priests Foundation provides care and support for our retired priests when they become frail and ill.

For Father Jim Browne, the joy of priesthood is found in service to others. “We are all God’s people and his servants”, Fr Jim says. “All of us are different, but if you look for it, you will also find that we all have something in common. The thing that makes priests a little different, is that we are always oriented towards people, and so in retirement it is important that we maintain that connection with people and with other priests.”

Though retired, Father Jim is still active in ministry on Macleay and Russell Islands, as well as some of the smaller surrounding communities. “There is a difference in the expectation of what retirement would be, and then the reality of it”, says Father Jim.

“This year, I celebrated 55 years since my ordination as a priest. I started saying Mass in the Island communities 23 years ago, and this has not stopped or slowed down since my retirement. As I get older, I realise that I might have to slow the pace, and I am extremely grateful to have the support of the Priests Foundation through the Archdiocese.”

Your generosity provides accommodation, basic health care and nursing support to elderly and unwell priests in retirement. With your help, these men of God maintain their connection with each other and their parishioners.

Father Jim says: “Our Archdiocese looks after us extremely well, and I am grateful for the blessings I receive in my later years.”

For the 57 retired priests currently supported through the Priests Foundation, your

donation provides more than material comfort. Your gift tells them that they are not forgotten; that they are carried in our prayers; that their years in service have borne fruit in our hearts.
