From the General Manager…

Hello, Lookout Point!

What a summer this is shaping up to be! Remember to stay hydrated and to keep your energy levels up to

play your best golf. Make sure to visit the Golf Shop before your tee-time or “The Shack” while on course and

pick yourself up an energy drink and some fruit and nuts to keep your body in top form. When things start to

fade in the late holes of your round, mental fatigue creeps in and this will affect your posture, which is

directly related to a good or bad shot.

I would like to thank Golf Course Superintendent, Aldo Bortolon and his crew because the course keeps

getting better each day. However, we need your help to maintain these lush conditions. Please help us

deliver great playing conditions as often as we can. Let’s keep the carts out of the rough and away from “the

champions cut” walkways. Please don’t forget your divots, and don’t leave your footprints in the sand.

Congratulations to all of our Club Champions. A great tournament was played by all and it was great to see

everyone in attendance.

Thank you all for the support that you have shown us in the Golf Shop. I think it is appropriate to recognize JJ

Alexander and his staff in the Golf Shop for their efforts this year in organizing the member events and also

helping you all with special orders and product knowledge. Al Kmety, Associate Professional, Dan Roud, our

Golf Shop/Inventory MGR, Mary Jane Hall, our resident Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member and PGA

professional, Helen Webb and her wealth of merchandising experiences from Peterborough G&CC as well as

Credit Valley G&CC and of course Jennifer Szenasi, Our Golf Shop Assistant and customer service attendant.

It would be unfair to leave our “Back Shop MGR” Dave Swibb out of this conversation. Swibby has really got

things grooving like a well-oiled machine back there. This is the time of year that we will be offering some

great deals on some demo equipment, etc. Make sure you stop in and ask our professional staff about the

new and exciting fashion lines as well as the latest and greatest equipment that will help you get those few

extra yards that we are all looking for.

New this year we have a couple of member appreciation days booked. Bring 3 guests for the price of 2 and

have lunch on us before the round. Check with the Golf Shop for details.

We look forward to seeing you at Lookout Point Golf Club.

Good Golfing!

Dan Greenwood, PGA [email protected] 905-892-2639 Ext. 241

From the Greens… The dog days of summer have finally arrived. The heat/humidity will now start to show the impact on the

course. You will start noticing dried out areas, primarily in the rough. On the positive side, regarding the rough,

which has been extremely lush and healthy this year, it will now start to thin out, making shots much easier to

execute. The greens may have a tendency of being a bit softer with the amount of water needed to apply to

get us through this period.

If needed, mowing heights on the greens might need to be raised ever so slightly to get us through this stressful

period. Overall, the golf course has been healthy and in good shape this year. Having the green’s as healthy as

they’ve been, has allowed us to peak the green speeds for most of our key golf events.

I would like to continue encouraging all our playing members to fix their ball marks, replace and repair their

divots and rake bunkers for the respect of the rest of the members. I would also like to mention, members who

ride carts, please refrain from driving on the “Pro Cut” walkway to reduce the wear on the turf.

Please keep in mind our August greens and fairways aerification is schedule for the week of the 17th – 21st.

Once again I encourage all members who may have any questions regarding our Turf Maintenance schedule or

procedures to send me an email or just come see me out on the course.

Until next month, stay cool and enjoy the heat as winter will be here before you know it.

Superintendent

Aldo Bortolon

From the Ladies Section…

It is never boring in the Ladies Section. The Interclub team hosted at Lookout on Friday, July 17, welcoming

rival teams from Lockport, St. Catharines and Frontier Golf Clubs. Lookout is currently in third place. Next

Interclub is Friday, August 21.

WHERE IN THE WORLD?

The Ladies Member Guest event was a “round-the-world” success on Saturday, July 18. Each hole was a

different country and surprisingly it was steaming hot even in Sweden. All participants played their own ball

but decided after tee off whose score would be used for the team submission. Not only did golfers have to

keep their eyes on the ball, they had to scour the woods in search of Carmen Sandiego, a blow-up Lady in

Red. A computer game made popular in the 1980s, Carmen was an ACE detective for ACME detective agency

who found catching criminals too easy and decided that outsmarting ACME itself would make for greater

challenges. It’s believed the ever elusive Carmen became corrupt.

Two groups found Carmen perched in the trees beside the 10th fairway. A draw determined the winners:

Joanne Catena, Nadia Baronas, Avril McKenna-Norton, Sandra Billyard. This team also won low gross.

The team who had the most fun: Terri Kershaw, Helen Canbridge, Kathy Fast, Therese Rothwell-Downes.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious boxed lunch and a superb Asian-themed buffet prepared by our wonderful

kitchen staff.

Congratulations all! Special thanks to chief organizer Dianne Haist.

Thank you from the Ladies Section.

100th Anniversary Historical Tribute Committee

We are looking for volunteers for the Club’s 100th Anniversary Committee to help create a commemorative book.

We are also looking for members who would like to share their stories, photographs and memorabilia about Lookout Point to help us create our 100th Anniversary Book that we are producing.

Members interested in joining the committee and /or sharing their knowledge and/or artifacts are invited to contact Chris Malkiewich ([email protected]).

From the Golf Shop… What’s Ahead…

Supers Choice!

On Saturday August 15th our Super Aldo Bortolon will set up the golf course will the toughest pins that meet the

requirements for fair play. On Sunday August 16th you will experience the total opposite. Pins will be set-up with the

easiest pin location Aldo can find. This is not an event that you need to sign up or pay for. Good Luck to Everyone!

Fairway and Green Aerification

Starting Monday, August 17th your grounds crew will be hard at work punching the fairways and the greens. While

work is being done, only 9 holes will be open for play. If Mother Nature cooperates and all machinery performs as it

should we could have all 18 holes open before the end of the week. The Golf Shop staff will open up the tee sheet for

18 holes play when the aerification is complete.

Finally Friday’s

Our next Finally Friday’s is scheduled for Friday, August 28th with a 5pm shotgun. Sign up in the Golf Shop, Online and

the Men’s and Ladies Locker rooms. Entry fee for event includes 9 holes of golf and a Buffet dinner. Guests are always

welcome!

From Food and Beverage…

I can’t believe it’s already August. I’m shocked every year how fast a season comes and goes. Here are somethings

that you should know about for the month of August…

Due to the lack of interest in the cooking classes, we have decided to remove the remaining classes on the

calendar for the season. You are more than welcome to get a group together (minimum of 10 and a

Maximum of 14) to hold a private class. We can sit down and work out a menu that you would like to learn

how to cook. These classes are a ton of fun and a great opportunity for company team building or just

getting together with some people you haven’t seen in a while. Classes are available year round.

“Keep it Green” Christmas Party Promotion. Book a Christmas party with 50 or more guests in the month

of November and receive 4 free green fees for the 2016 season.

This month’s “End of the Month” Buffet will be North American with all the classic dishes. The Buffet will

run on the 28th and 29th of August.

Number 6 shack will be closed August 17th, 18th and 19th for the week of areification. It will reopen on the

20th for Men’s Night.

Try and get as many rounds in as you can because soon enough we will be shoveling that horrible white stuff.

Play Well,

Executive Chef
