SLETTER LIFE EDUCATION @Nilma
The whole school recently participated in our Life Education sessions with Jan Detering and Harold. Parents were also able to attend a parent session last Friday. Each homegroup had a different topic and now will commence with other classroom activities to complete their unit of work. We love getting positive feedback from visitors to Nilma. In Jan’s words; “I loved coming to your school. Your children were delightful - polite, well mannered, interested and well behaved. You have a lovely family feeling at your school and I enjoyed every minute. Best wishes for the rest of the year. Hopefully Harold and I can visit you all again.” Congratulations to the Nilma School Community—That is what we love to hear! We have been discussing building ‘REAL Character @ Nilma’. In the coming weeks we will be reviewing what this means and how we can show good character traits and build our positive emotional skills and language to describe our feelings thoughts and actions.
SCHOOL COUNCIL—Decision Making at NPS The culture of Nilma Primary School is to work in partnership with parents for the benefit of all students and families. We have been very fortunate to have such a positive and engaged parent body for Council. We thank all 2016 school councillors for their commitment to the school. There will be many opportunities for parents to have some input into decision making for the future of the students at NPS. One avenue of input is involvement at a School Council level. The School Council for 2017 will have two parent representative positions for School Council and 2 Department of Education and Training (DET) positions available. Mr Williams and Ms Matarczyk’s DET positions are up as well as Mrs Natalie Axford and Mrs Katie Farmer, the parent representatives. (2 year positions). We thank both parents for their commitment and input for 2015 and 16. I would like to thank Mrs Natalie Axford for taking up the role of President of Council —due to now working at an DET member—Natalie is unable to continue in this parent representative role on On behalf of the community I thank you for your valued contribution to Nilma as the school president Natalie. Any parents wishing to apply for a position please complete the appropriate form. Self Nomination Forms are attached to the newsletter. These will need to be returned to the office by Friday 10th February.
School Council Meeting Nilma’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be
held on Monday 20th February 2017 at 6.30pm.
Parents are welcome to the meeting. (please note date change due to prior commitments
on Valentines day!) Please consider this as an opportunity to contribute to your child’s education. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come and talk to Annette.
FOUNDATION STUDENTS Foundation/new parent brief information session was cancelled last week due to Kath being ill. Apologies to parents. Sorry for any inconvenience. We have reschedules the information session n regards to school diaries and satchels etc to be re-scheduled for this coming Monday morning at 9am in the Ruby Red classroom at the beginning of assembly. Foundation students will not be required to attend school on Wednesdays for the month of February and the first Wednesday in March.
SCHOOL CARPARK Just while we settle back into routine please be very aware of the congestion in the car park for about 5 minutes after school. When parking around the outer side of the carpark –please encourage children to move around the outer sides (pathways) around the carpark area. If you have parked in the middle bays , parents please note we only cross across the crossing area. There should not be any need for parents or students to be walking diagonally across the car park or across traffic. The teachers will be discussing the car park safety with students and identifying appropriate behaviours and school expectations. There is a teacher on duty at the crossing area after school each evening. We encourage all students to walk and wait at the undercover area until parents arrive for pick up after school. Pick up can be between 3.15 and 3.30pm to relieve congestion. Please do not park out the front of the school, this is not a parking zone, it is not safe and you will get booked!
PARENT -TEACHER DISUCSSIONS– CHANGE OF DATE! Due to Professional Development commitments by several staff, we have needed to change the date of discussions to Thursday 9th March 2017. Please see attached note on page 8 For further details.

L.A.U.G.H Program Learning Activities Under Guidance of Home
NIGHTLY READING Students will be bringing home books for nightly reading as part of their LAUGH (Learning Activities Under the Guidance of Home) program. Please support your child with their reading by sharing these books at home. Your child has already been introduced to the texts being sent home and are encouraged to discuss the pictures and think about what is happening in the book. Praise your child’s attempts at reading the words and sharing their thinking. Sounding out the words and looking at the pictures for support, are both good strategies for effective readers. Once read, the title of the book needs to be recorded in the student diary provided and signed (on the day read). Books are to be returned to school the following day in the school satchel.

CHAPLAINS’ CHAT
Welcome back everyone. This past holiday period has found the Primes with their heads in road maps and directories as we sought out addresses of family, friends and special events in foreign cities. We noted the formal structure of the city layout and how important that layout was for us to read the maps. They helped eased the frustration of finding new places and gave us ‘ visuals’ from which to navigate. All of which helped us to feel more comfortable in a new environment. It struck me that ‘ family life’ is much like a good map. The things the children learn in the family can help them navigate through school, sporting activities, family, relationships and the social scene with potential ‘new friends’. The structures we put in place at home; respecting each other, listening without judging, including others, taking care of our things, talking about our feelings, returning borrowed property, taking turns, apologizing and forgiving. These are part of the ‘plan’ or the ‘grid’ we put in place that will ensure our children get the best opportunity to navigate difficult terrain. I’ve just named a few here, but I wonder how your child’s map is shaping up? Enjoy your year here at Nilma. We certainly feel privileged to be part of your ‘kids’ formation and journey. Anne Prime

LAUGH @ NILMA The Learning Activities Under the Guidance of Home program (LAUGH) will begin next week on Monday. Each student in Year F-2 is required to borrow a game, play it at home with family and/or friends and then return it on the following Monday. Our process for overdue games is as such; if students have had a game for more than 2 weeks, a late slip will be given to the homegroup teacher who will place it in their diary to go home to parents. If students are unable to find game pieces or the whole game please send a note to the homegroup teacher explaining this so it can be followed up and a solution can be found. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep this program running smoothly.
