INDIA BASIN SHORELINE PARK

The India Basin, once a defunct section of the city, is completely reinventing itself. In fact, the City is in the process of redeveloping the India Basin Shoreline Park, dubbed “San Francisco’s Next Frontier of Development”. The redevelopment of India Basin will be a legacy waterfront park for the City of San Francisco and greater Bay Area.

In 2014, the City acquired the 900 Innes property, which is adjacent to the existing India Basin Shoreline Park and India Basin Shoreline Open Space. The city plans to design and build a new, world class 8-acre park will provide local residents with direct access to parks, open space, and new recreational opportunities. The Trust for Public Land conducted a “Designs Ideas Competition” for the future of the combined 900 Innes and India Basin Shoreline Park Sites. Five talented landscape architecture teams submitted design ideas, and were reviewed by a jury. The competition was guided by the technical information contained in the India Basin Waterfront Study. The winning firm was Seattle-based Gustafson Guthrie Nichol.

The current park is 5.6-acres and will be redesigned to better serve the surrounding community and enhance citywide programs. Hunters Point Boulevard and the adjacent new park at 900 Innes Street will be connected via new biking and walking paths. Closer to the shoreline, a new wetland habitat, an enhanced playground and recreational facilities will be developed.
