By the time you read this, the pipeline project will be completed with new grassseeding in the back lot, new concrete from the Levick St. bridge to just pastour driveway and a new asphalt parking lot with new striping. The project wentrelatively smoothly if you remembered to say “Church” to get through thedetour signs except for one Sunday. In addition, we were able to successfullyprovide passage and parking for two wedding receptions and three funeralswith the cooperation of SPECTRA management of the construction personneland the police.

We had our first unity meeting with some of our new parishioners to determinewhat their needs are and how we could meet them. Their first major requestwas to continue Armenian School. It was then decided to combine ArmenianSchool and Sunday School which has been done. The first classes beganSunday 9/16.

A few of the people volunteered to be Sunday greeters in the Narthexwelcoming people in Russian or better Armenian than mine. The first greeterwas on 9/16. Boris and Ella Avakyan sponsored a Newcomers coffee hour(with great pastries she made to help people get acquainted). Another Sundaythe Karakhanyan-Hovhannisyan Family treated us to a wonderful spread.Further newcomer coffee hours will be scheduled.

We will have our second meeting on Monday 9/17 prior to our Council meeting to discuss first impressions and to alsodetermine further coordinating actions.

In the maintenance beautification area, we are:1. Sanding and re-staining the front doors2. Obtaining bids to replace the front steps and landings3. Doing minor concrete and railing work on the north side4. Replacing the caulking on all 21 stained-glass windows in the church to stop/avoid leaks5. Replacing carpet on the Altar and in the Chancel, donated entirely by Garo Garibian

Dues and Stewardship contributions supply the money to pay one-third of our operating budget. It would be appreciated ifany of you who have not pledged or paid would please consider doing so. Letters have been sent to former members andStewards encouraging them to rejoin.

Socially we have the DinnerDance on September 29 andthe three-day Bazaar October26-28. On Sunday September23 we will have the blessing ofthe Parish Council.

A meeting will be held onNovember 5th with theleadership from all of our churchorganizations to present theirplans for 2013 and discuss anyconcerns or questions they mayhave, always with the focus onthe welfare and well-being ofour church.

We look forward to seeing youat church on Sundays and atsome of our many functions.

A meditation

by Deacon Albert Keshgegian

on Holy Communion

Senior Deacon: With fear and with faith draw near and communicate in holiness.

Choir/congregation: Our Lord and our God has appeared to us.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Priest: Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance; shepherd them and lift them up from henceforth untileternity.

It’s the most social of occasions. Together with our friends or family we meet at a restaurant or someone’s home toshare a meal, to “break bread” together. As we catch up on what’s new, reminisce over previous happy times, or tellfunny stories, we enjoy each other’s company while we share the delicious food together. And we’ve probably beenlooking forward to this weekend “date” all week.

The Divine Liturgy and receiving Holy Communion are something like this. All week we look forward to, or should be looking forward to, coming tochurch for the service. And, as a group, the congregation participates in ameal. But this meal is very different from a regular meal; no five-starrestaurant could even come close. With this meal, we communicate inholiness with each other and with God.

Holy Communion is the way we can get closest to God on earth, because weliterally receive Christ within us and reaffirm that we are all part of his bodythat is mystically now the Church, as the Church continues to do his work. All this has profound meaning both for us as the community of the Churchand for each of us as individuals.

As a community, we are doing what Christ asked us to do. We rememberthe establishment of Holy Communion at the Last Supper, similar to how wereminisce with friends or family when we get together. We share in the

common loaf of bread and single chalice of wine, similar to the sharing of food and drink at a family dinner. (And ofcourse this part of the service represents the last of the four actionsof Jesus at the Last Supper when he instituted Holy Communion andgave the disciples the bread and wine to share). We thank Christ forhis body that was broken and his blood that was shed for us. And welook forward to the time when we and Christ will be together again inGod’s kingdom.

As individuals, we affirm that we are sacrificing ourselves for Christ,in return for his sacrifice for us. As we communicate with the mysticalbody and blood of Christ, we receive spiritual life and energy withinus. As we become part of his body, our sins, which separate us fromGod, are forgiven. We each individually receive the promise ofeternal life with God.

In Holy Communion God himself appears to us. In the words ofPsalm 28:9, we are saved from death and blessed by him. Godbecomes our shepherd and guide; we are lifted up by him for eternity. What could be more compelling?

An Amazing Trip by Gabrielle Meranshian

Who would have guessed that I would have the opportunity to travel to Armenia twice in two years? This decision wasvery last minute! I was talking to my cousin, John Alexanian, during coffee hour and he mentioned he was going toArmenia with ASP for the first time and I remember how it was such a wonderful trip when I went and I decided Iwould love to go again.

My parents told me if there was one more spot left it would be God’s will for me to go- and that’s exactly whathappened! I was ecstatic knowing Der Hayr and his family were joining us; they are gracious people and I knew DerHakob would be a wonderful group leader.

Going back to Armenia felt like going home! I felt very comfortable the second time because I had a betterunderstanding of the currency exchange, their traditions, and I even remembered where my favorite clothing storeswere!

The first Sunday we were there we attended church at Etchmiadzin. Not eating beforehand was a bad decisionbecause I became dehydrated and eventually fainted. The people in church, along with my cousin’s family, assistedme outside. They gave me water and foodbut before I could thank them, a strangerthrew water in my face to make sure I wasawake! I couldn’t believe how caringstrangers could be. This experienceshowed me how loving and kind the peopleare - as if they were my own family. Ibelieve that in Armenia, there is aconnection we have with others whichcannot be explained.

During our excursions I felt as if I could bethe tour guide because I rememberedpertinent information from each site. Forsome this may have been repetitive andannoying, but for me it was absolutelyamazing! I still can’t get over the fact that Isaw Mt. Ararat twice and my parents andgrandmother have not had the chance yet.I am extremely blessed!

When we finally arrived in Gyumeri for theservice portion of the trip, we wereassigned to serve lunch at the local soupkitchen. I served here the previous year, but since the last time I had been there, the interior portion of the buildinghad unfortunately deteriorated a lot. My friends and I noticed that the walls in the back room were filled with mold sowe quickly changed our plans. We decided to take down the wallpaper and repaint the room to make it a healthierplace to breathe and eat, while others in the group served lunch. Our group also worked on tearing down the OctetMusic School in Gyumeri. This was initially a temporary building and now they are finally rebuilding a bigger and up-to-date school for the young musicians of the town.

Even though this is the second time I am writing about my ASP trip to Armenia, each time is a new experiencebecause you are with new people! The times we shared laughing and admiring beautiful architecture in our homelandis unforgettable. Nothing equates with going back to my ancestral homeland. I thank my parents for bringing me up toknow my culture and understand my religion and what it means to be Armenian. This made the trip much morememorable as I was seeing sites that I had previously only seen in books. I also want to thank them for graciouslyletting me have the opportunity to go again and for selflessly sending me, while they have yet to go themselves.

I have always been proud to be 100% Armenian, but when you go to Armenia, it makes your pride stronger, which issomething that is absolutely priceless. I can’t wait to go back!

Women’s Guild MessageIt may have been a hot sultry summer but it flew by mightyquickly. Seems like the 4

thof July was just yesterday. We

should not complain about the weather. At least there were noicy and snowy roads to keep us from attending church services.

As most ladies of the Women’s Guild know, we traditionally holdour first fall meeting on the second Tuesday in September.Considering the general apathy and lack of interest, the meetinghas been cancelled this year. Unless there is a genuine desireto gather together, all future meetings are cancelled as well.

What is in our future? As noted in a previous column, we shallbecome a more project-oriented organization. Coming up is theannual Fall Bazaar that will span three days. We shall call on ourmembers for their talents, ideas, and endless energies.

At this time we have a special request. Please take a minute tofind your Bible. Open to I Corinthians, chapter 12, verses 14-26.Take a few minutes to read the passage and ponder themessage.

GOING 4 GOLD

SUZANNA ALOIAN: Born on March 17 of 1972 in Tbilisi, Georgia. At age of sixafter my father tragically passed away, my mother, brother and I moved back toYerevan, Armenia and lived there until moving to the United States. I startedserious gymnastic training at age of six against my family's will, who couldn't everpicture me in big sports because of my very weak health. After 8 years of hardtraining, right about the time that I had to start to compete on the big arena, I hadto quit to be able to take care of my mother who unfortunately was suffering frombreast cancer and eventually passed away after couple of years of torture when Iwas 18. So my dream being a World Champion one day just went under the darkwaters.....until I moved to New York in 1995. For another 10 years I was just veryactive but no time for being in any sport, but in February of 2005 I joined the RedTiger Taekwondo under instructor Master Marcello Cancelliere. And that is whenTAEKWONDO took over my heart & soul!

Return to Asbury – a Huge Success

Several months ago when I started planning, I hoped to bring 100 people to the beach from between New York toPhiladelphia. I was overjoyed that almost 400 people joined me on Saturday August 11th from all over the country todance all night to live Armenian music at the Berkeley Carteret Hotel in Asbury Park for the benefit of our Armeniansummer camps.

The weekend kicked off on Friday with happy hour at the Watermark Lounge on the Asbury Boardwalk. On Saturdayguests enjoyed yoga and volleyball on the beach despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions for the beach. The AquaBar at the Sixth Avenue entrance hosted us for an afternoon happy hour before the main event on Saturday night.

Festivities on Saturdaykicked off just after 8 pm witha line of eager attendees whoarrived early. Theirenthusiasm and earlyattendance certainlysurprised and startled me asan organizer. The dancefloor remained full, well until1:30 am when the closingbell rang.

This event was launched withthe support of the many, many committee memberswho selfishly and graciouslyhelped with endless calls, emails, and mindlesserrands. Many of theseindividuals had not heard ofAsbury or me prior to July. Some could not attend butwere eager to help bringback a tradition. Additionally, there was a great responsefrom the local Asburycommunity.

I am thankful for the advice and support from so many individuals who cheered me to the finish. I have a new respect andappreciation for all the time and selfless efforts contributed by these individuals in order to keep the Armenian communitytogether. Lastly, I am sure everyone enjoyed the music provided by our many talented musicians, both locally and fromout of town.

As I mentioned, this event was underwritten with generous donations as well as contributions of time and talent. Withoutthe volunteers and donors, this event would have cost well above $125 per person! If you enjoyed yourself and want toensure that the event continues into the future, please consider an additional donation which will go directly to the benefitof Camp Hayastan, Camp Nubar, and St Vartan Camp.

Donations can be made online at: www.returntoasbury.eventbrite.com. Checks can be written out to the ArmenianStudents Association and mailed to my attention at 316 E 55th Street Apt 7A, NY, NY 10022.

A brave member of the committee has expressed interest in leading the event for the summer of 2013. Please be kind, generous, and equally supportive as I hand down the ranks to the next leader.

With much love,Robin Barone, Organizer - Return to Asbury 2012
