HABIT; A tall tree with a straight trunk and dense round headed symmetrical crown. Trunk is pale green when young turning reddish-brown with maturity. Fast growing. FOLIAGE; Dark green leaves, glossy above paler beneath, 10-18cm long, 4-6cm wide, oval in shape, leathery. FLOWERS; White, 1cm across, produced in terminal clusters, conspicuous stamens. FLOWERING SEASON; October to December FRUIT; Capsule, similar to a gum nut, 1cm x 1cm, Green at first maturing to a mid- brown in late summer. CULTURE & USE; Windbreaks, parks, streetscapes, shade, screen tree, parks, large properties. Minimum natural rainfall 600mm. PRUNING; Some shaping of young trees may be required to develop a central leader and to thicken growth, side shoots should be removed until the required height of clear trunk has been achieved. Little pruning is necessary once tree is established apart from removal of any wayward growth. Many trees have their form ruined by incorrect pruning. COMMENTS; Suitable for most soils but preferring fertile loams or sandy soils with free drainage. Young trees need dependable water supply during summer but should be fairly drought tolerant once established (approx. 2yrs after planting in situ). Young trees will also require frost protection for the first few years. Should handle temperatures to -3*c when established.
