The LagoonThe Lagoon• The Lagoon was also the

place called the bathing pool

• It was a symbol of calmness and relaxation

• The waters were always calm and warm and offered protection from the ocean’s waters that otherwise pounded the shores surrounding the island• “The irregular arc of coral

the lagoon was still as a mountain lake - blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple (10).”

• Along with protection the lagoon also is a place where the boys can be how they were at home, being able to bathe keeps a sense of cleanliness and that means society

Mock HuntMock Hunt

• The Mock Hunt displays the savage id within the young boys

• While the boys were on a pig hunt, Robert decided to pretend that he was a pig while Ralph was boasting about hitting this pig.

• The boys get carried away when “All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his knife (114).”

• It is also clearly a sign of the id because Golding describes that the, “desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering (115).”

The LittleunsThe Littleuns

• The littleuns are constantly playing a role though out the book

• The littleuns are a symbol of the common people, the majority.

• The littleuns are the backdrop of all the changes that take place on the island.

• They are also set apart as a different society than the older boys. They lack the adult attitudes, recognition and interest in the severity of the situation. They are frightened and depend on the older boys as guardians.

LittleunsLittleuns

• “The Smaller boys were known as the generic title of littleuns. . .no one had trouble recognizing biguns at one end and littleuns at the other (59).”

• “They talk and scream. The littleuns. Even some of the others. . . As if the beasties, the beasties or snake-thing was real (52).”

• “And they kept running off. (littleuns). You remember the meeting? How everyone was supposed to work until the shelters were finished (50).”

• These quotes all show the severity of the situation and how they littleuns were not realizing this.
