`âá|v axãá Grigoryan Nights In early term 4, Guitar Ensembles One and Two will perform two concerts with renowned classical guitarists, the Grigoryan Brothers. The concerts will be hosted by Villanova College at the Augustine Centre on the nights of Thursday 24 October and Friday 25 October and will feature performances by Leonard and Slava Grigoryan, who captivated audiences and inspired a whole generation of Loreto guitarists when they came to Villa for a similar event four years ago. Before the brothers perform, the first half of the concerts will also include performances by each school’s guitar ensembles, combined performances featuring the Grigoryan Brothers, and a guest spot from the Aurora Guitar Ensemble. Tickets for the these concerts are now on sale (both nights will be exactly the same) and are available exclusively through the Trybooking website (http://www.trybooking.com/61384). Prices are $25 for adults and $15 for school students. Performing students will not need to purchase tickets, as they have had seats reserved for them on the Thursday night performance, and will be able to watch the 2nd half of the Friday night concert via video-link in the Playhouse. You will also be able to pre-order commemorative concert DVDs on the trybooking website for $20/each if you wish.

To help prepare the Guitar Ensembles for these special performances, there will be a day long rehearsal on Monday 21 October (student free day) held at the Augustine Centre – more details to follow soon. Additionally, Guitar Ensemble Two will have a one-off rehearsal at Villanova on Thursday 17 October after school (students in Concert Band One of Junior Choir excused to attend their regular rehearsals). Loreto will provide a bus to transport the girls to Villanova at 3:30 pm but parents should organise to collect their daughters from Villanova’s Sixth Avenue entrance at 5:30 pm on that day.

Their name will now be inscribed on the Bandslam Perpetual Trophy! As a result of this final section of the Loreto Music Festival, it is also now possible to announce the overall house winner – for the fifth time in the competition’s twelve year history this honour goes to Ward!

Brisbane Catholic Education Is looking for students to participate in a combined Catholic schools choir to perform during the day on Friday 11 October for the launch of a new Religious Education Curriculum. The choir will be led by Mr Anthony Young, an absolute expert in choral teaching and conducting, will rehearse once on Wednesday 9 October from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at St Laurence’s College, and the performance will be held in the Grand Chelsea Ballroom of the Mercure Hotel. Mega-Raffle – $500 Cash! That’s the first prize in this year’s Mega-Raffle so don’t miss out on getting your tickets! Tickets will be given to all students involved in ensembles or private tuition on Tuesday 8 October (first day of term 4) and the $500 cash, as well as a bunch of other great prizes will be drawn at the Music Night Concert on Friday 1 November.

Ensembles and Auditions In the past few weeks I have outlined the philosophy and reasoning behind the organisational structure of the College’s Ensemble Program, as well as the purpose of the Audition Day. Participation in the Ensemble program provides many benefits for students, including but not limited to the social interaction with other girls who share similar interests, building team working skills, developing appreciation for the aesthetics of the arts, and practising core academic skills that cross subject boundaries.

For all this to be possible, a certain level of commitment from students and parents is required. Students need to attend ensemble rehearsals regularly, continue to develop their individual playing skills through taking lessons on their instrument and make time to learn their ensemble music at home.

This preparation then leads to several performances each year and it is obvious that no student group can play at its best unless all members of that group are present at these performances. The most important events at which ensembles perform each year are our Autumn Concerts (each group will play at one of these), the Music Night and Live & Wired Music Festival in Term Four (again each group plays at one or the other), and the Catholic Colleges Music Festival in August. Dates for these concerts will be published in the school newsletters at the very start of each academic year. Additionally, some core and extension groups perform at other events during the year. These dates are also publicised well in advance (eg Primary Music Camp for Concert Band One and String Ensemble, or Mt Carmel Fete for Sorelle and Exit Stage Left).

The College’s expectation is that members of music ensembles would take note of event dates when they are published in the school newsletter and make themselves available to perform, even in preference to non-school (eg. sporting/dance) commitments. Ben Langford - Director of Music

A final Year 10 camp letter will be sent home this week with instructions and contact numbers for the duration of the camp. The students will have a final camp meeting during PD time this Thursday. The students will be required to be at school at 7.30 am on Wednesday 9 October. At 7.30am the girls should leave their labelled camp gear in the undercroft and proceed to a classroom for roll taking and instructions before the buses leave at 7.45 am. The students will bring their equipment in one of the heavy duty garbage bags to transport their gear on the bus. The foam bed mat can be kept aside providing it is clearly labelled. Should you need to contact me on the morning of the camp departure, I will be available on the school mobile number indicated on the letter from 7am on Wednesday 9 October. I hope the students are excited about the adventure that awaits them! We are most certainly looking forward to this very important event. Ms Davidson - Year 10 Coordinator

Annie Diamond - Year 12 Coordinator jÉÅxÇ jtÄ~ yÉÜ jtàxÜ @ EC fxÑàxÅuxÜ ECDF This Friday, students are invited to come to school in their sports uniform. Periods 1 and 2 will occur as normal before we have an extended morning tea to allow the school to be transformed into the Walkathon course and the students to transform themselves into their favourite superhero. (as well as to eat and drink and use the bathroom). The Walkathon runs from 11.15 – 1.15pm. The track is located on the school grounds and is 1.3kms long. Upon completion of each lap, students will be asked to carry two 2 litre bottles of water around a loop of the oval before being given a spirit token to be added to their House Spirit Vase. At this point, students will take to the track again. The more laps completed, the more spirit tokens the houses will gain. Spirit points will be awarded to the winning house. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed ‘Superhero”!

Important information:

All students are required to bring a gold coin. This is for the privilege of participation and dressing up.

Water bottles, hats and any medication are essential. Failure to have these will result in the inability to participate. Students should make sure their costumes allow them to wear a hat. Sun cream will be provided at various points on the course. There is one water station, however the track passes a number of water bubblers and all students are to carry a water bottle.

There is to be no running.

There will be an alternative course arranged for students who are unable to complete the track. These students are to see Mrs Gore early next week or on the morning of the Walkathon.

When the lunch hour finishes at 2.15pm, there will be time for clean-up of Homerooms and grounds and a final Assembly for awarding prizes and singing the Holiday Hymn. School will finish at the normal time of 3.20pm.

The tuckshop will be open at Morning Tea and Lunch.

The Women Walk for Water will focus on raising funds for Care Australia’s ‘Give Water for Life’ Appeal. In the last year, the appeal has helped more than 27 million people throughout the world to implement sustainable water practices. It has released women and girls from the time consuming task of collecting water and this time can now be spent attending school and gaining a valuable education. An Everyday Hero page has been set up and we would like to encourage donations in support of our students’ efforts on the day. Basketball This Week’s Draw - Round 3: 18 September

Open A vs St John Fisher at Loreto, MWC Open B vs San Sisto at San Sisto College, Carina(bus) Intermediate A Gold (Yr 10) vs Lourdes Hill at Mt Gravatt Leisure Centre (bus) Intermediate A Blue (Yr 9) vs San Sisto at Mt.Gravattt Leisure Centre (bus) Junior A vs All Hallows’ at Loreto, outside court

Results: Round 2 Open A were defeated by All Hallows’ 55 to 19 Loreto started well and it appeared that the match would be quite close. Loreto maintained strong defence but All Hallows’ were too fast and aggressive in attack. The scoreline does not truly reflect the standard of the match as both teams played strong basketball. Unfortunately, the scoring opportunities were limited for Loreto but Taili Beausang, Emily Taylor, Maddie Dinnen and Lauren Higgins led the way in offence.

Open B were defeated by St Rita’s 29 to 24 This was a tough match with St Rita’s being too fast and aggressive in attack. Loreto played determinedly and special mention to Awien Lee who worked tirelessly in defence throughout the entire match. With improved structure in attack and defence Loreto is capable of beating this team the next time they play.

Intermediate A (Gold) were defeated by San Sisto 26 to 18 Loreto played with greater structure this week, but fouling probably cost them the match. Shooting was more accurate and ball control was also improved. However, court transition and fitness are areas for future improvement. Georgia Christie, Julia Logan and Georgia Johnson had strong games.

Intermediate A (Blue) were defeated by All Hallows’ 44 to 22 In a rematch of last year’s grand final Loreto could not produce their best basketball on the day. Great rebounding from Adriana Urbina and Tayla Jansen while Brigitte Mastry and Laura Schenk led the way in defence. Loreto gave it their best effort but were not successful this time. The challenge is to now focus on areas of weakness.

Junior A were defeated by St Rita’s 52 to 31 Loreto are continuing to show improvement each match. Lauren O’Neill and Rachael Dalton had outstanding games playing with great enthusiasm and skill. The team is beginning to demonstrate more structure in both attack and defence. Nyree Wood, Basketball Coordinator

Results: Round 2

Open A vs LHC Won 9 – 2 The Open A team played a strong first half in defence to keep the opposition scoreless. Unfortunately, a lack of talk in the second half was the reason players came off their opposition number which created an overlap and allowed them to score. All players must talk on the field particularly in defence so no one is in doubt about which player is their responsibility. Tahlia Simms read play accurately to dart through gaps to score several great touch downs. Hard running games from Wade Bilton and Madison Andrews.

Open B vs San Sisto Drew 2 – 2 A brilliant game was played by the open B team. We kept rucking consistently which provided the basis for players penetrating gaps. Eloise Carroll took this advantage and broke through the defensive line to score twice. Overall, an impressive game!

Inter A v MTA Won 6 – 4 The team played well together and worked exceptionally hard after losing Madison Witt to an injury. Special mention is made of Mary Savva and Michaela Crone who organised play and openly encouraged all players to play to potential and the set plan.

Inter B v Mt Alvernia Won 17 – 0 Excellent game with the team displaying great attack and defence. All players worked well and Zoe McNamee was outstanding in all facets of the game. Well done!

Inter C 1 v Lor 2 (Inter C2) Lost 1 - 6 Great games played by Leah Carey and Emily O’Keefe despite the team losing. Talking has improved but clearly needs to be more consistent and for the entire game. Attack needs to be set up with rucking strongly to attack through links and wings. Overall, communication can improve to minimise opposition scoring opportunities.

Inter C 2 v Lor 1 (Inter C1) Won 6 - 1 The players all rucked according to the team tactics. Defensively, players committed and marked accurately on all opposition players to keep their scoring opportunities to a minimum. Passing was accurate with all balls placed well in front of the player. Overall, the team defence was the single factor that produced a great win for the team.

Inter D v Brigidine Won 5 – 3 The team played well to score 5 great touchdowns. Some lapses in defence allowed the opposition to score twice when good talk would have prevented them. Overall, a great win!

Jun A v MSM Won 1 – 0 The team came away with a win but overall it was as if the game was played in slow motion. All team members need to work on positioning themselves deeper in attack and rucking strongly when needed. Top games from Audrey McCosker and Gaby Lynch!

Jun B v Mt Alvernia Lost 1 – 3 The game this week was much improved in both rucking and defence. Georgia O’Keefe scored a great touchdown. All players must watch the play at all times in defence and attack and be alert for the whole game. Even players who are in the

“sub box” must be focussed on the game and talking to on field players.            Therese Begley - Coordinator

aÉà|vxáB UâÄÄxà|Çá Catholics Returning Home Do you know someone who has left the Church?

Most of us do not have to look very far to find non-practicing Catholics in our circle of family and friends. Many of us are concerned about these loved ones, but we don’t know how to help them. Obviously, most of them are searching, but how can we help them find their way home?

Our Lady of Graces Parish, Carina, will offer the six week series, Catholics Returning Home, beginning Thursday, October 17 at 7.30pm meeting in the Parish Library. The parish is situated at 100 Mayfield Road, Carina.

The sessions are for non-practising Catholics who are seeking answers to questions about returning to the Church. If you know someone who has left the Church, please invite them to join us. For more information, call the Parish Office, telephone 3398 2977.

Room to Read Dinner

Since retiring as Loreto’s Librarian, Kathy Hedemann is volunteering with ‘Room to Read’, an international organisation which raises money to establish libraries in Asia and Africa.

The organisation’s objective is to raise funds for girls’ education in developing countries. At a dinner held in July, close to $6000 was raised which provided for 24 years of girls’ education. Loreto College has kindly offered to allow us to hold a ’Room to Read’ dinner in the Mary Ward Centre, on Friday 18 October. A Sri Lankan caterer will be providing a wonderful meal.

We are hoping that with your support, this evening will be a wonderful success. Our chapter is completely volunteer and all funds raised will go toward supporting girls in the countries where Room to Read operates. Please see the attached flyer in the newsletter for more details. Thank you for your support.
