What’s the best part of being the queen? Go to Parade.com/dench to find out.

—Damian H., Chicago, Ill.A: The former Veronica Mars star ques-tions if anyone can know for sure. But if doing good deeds helps get you there, Bell, 37, is on track. She works with PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) and she is also a co-founder of This Bar Saves Lives, which makes snack bars and donates a nutritional packet to a child in need with every purchase. Sea-son two of her “afterlife” comedy, The Good Place, premieres Sept. 20 on NBC.

WALTER SCOTT’S

—Diane B., St. Petersburg, Fla.A: The star of two Back to the Future sequels took a brief break in 2015 after four years of playing blood-splatter specialist Julie Finlay. She wanted to spend more time with her family. But now she’s back in two movies. First up is Battle of the Sexes, in theaters Sept. 22, based on the high-stakes 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. (Shue plays Riggs’ wife.) Then on Nov. 22, Shue, 53, will play the wife of Bruce Willis’ character in the reboot of Charles Bronson’s vigilante action-drama Death Wish.

EMAIL YOUR QUESTIONS FOR WALTER SCOTT TO [email protected]

The Academy Award–winning and Emmy-nominated actress plays Queen Victoria near the end of her life in Victoria & Abdul, in theaters Sept. 22. The film, about the mon-arch’s friendship with a young Indian clerk (Ali Fazal) whom she meets at her Golden Jubilee celebration, marks the second time that Dench, 82, has played Queen Victoria—and she has also played Queen Elizabeth I.Was the story of Victoria and Abdul new to you? No. It’s been about for quite a time. So much was destroyed about this relationship because nobody was very pleased about it, except Queen Victoria. Victoria was quite portly at this point in her life. How uncomfortable was all the padding? Well, you just get used to it. After [her husband] Albert died, she just didn’t care and she went on eating all the time; couldn’t resist it. I’m 5 feet 1¾ inches, but she was smaller than that. I think she was almost as round as she was tall.Do you have fond memories of your role as “M” in the James Bond movies? Yes, it was simply wonderful. I got to go to Nassau and the Bahamas and, oh, I had a lovely, lovely time. You’re never going to retire, are you? I’m going to do another film in October, hopefully. I’m filming something for the BBC. I don’t plan it. But if I stay quietly, very watchfully, and wait, if I’m very lucky, something comes along.

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

Why does blowing on hot soup make it cool faster? My breath is warmer than room tempera-ture, not cooler.

—Jamie Supramaniam, Washington, D.C.

For the same reason that blow-ing on an ice cream cone in hot weather will make it melt faster. (Really? Yes, it does.) Blowing pushes away the thin layer of soup-warmed air (or cooled air, in the case of ice cream) directly over the bowl, allowing more of the food surface to contact the ambient air. Blowing also moves the food itself, causing more of the same.

Lori Greiner may swim with the great whites on ABC’s popular

Shark Tank, but the aptly named Queen of QVC is a passionate champion for anyone with a smart concept or product, what she calls a “hero,” not a “zero.”

In fact, she has a rep-utation for being the warm-blooded shark on the three-time Emmy-winning reality TV show that next month kicks off its ninth season on a new night, Sunday, Oct. 1, at 9 p.m. ET.

“I think it’s because I’m kind when I say no,” Greiner says. “I know that when an entrepreneur stands before us pitch-

ing a concept, it is the biggest moment in his or her business life. It means everything and it’s an enormous risk. I get it because I was once in their shoes.”

As head of her own company, For Your Ease Only, Greiner has invented more than 600 products and pro-

cured over 120 patents. Known as a very hands-on shark, her Shark Tank deals Scrub Daddy (a line of sponges), the Simply Fit Board (an exercise tool) and the Sleep Styler hair rollers are three of the biggest Shark Tank hits to date. They’ve racked up more than $300 million in retail sales. C

An Inventor Is BornGreiner says she never set out to be a serial inventor, but her first product, a plastic ear-ring organizer she created in 1996, came out of a conversation she had with a friend about earrings and the fact that jewelry boxes are a nightmare. She recalls, “It was a thunderbolt moment. It just—bam!—hit me.” It turned out to be most definitely a “hero.”

With a $300,000 loan, she fearlessly set out to find a manufacturer that could make the product. Once she had a prototype in hand, she asked women on the street for their opin-

ions about it to ensure it was a hero. Soon, she secured an order from JCPenney, started her own company and began appearing on the Home Shopping Network. Before long, she had paid back the loan and, in 2000, with an arsenal of new products, she landed her own show on QVC called Clever and Unique Creations.

“In the beginning, I was just thinking as fast as I could to come up with more and more. I’d look for problems that people experience in everyday life. Then I would think about how

an item could come to life,” says Greiner. In 2014, she published her first book, Invent It, Sell It, Bank It!, a pay-it-forward, step-by-step guide.

Greiner spent the early days of her career learning all the steps it would take to produce her inventions.

“I had to figure things out on my own,” she says. “I feel that when you’re driving a business, you should know every facet of it since no one will love your business like you do.”

Along the way, Greiner laid the foundation for her personal (and professional) philoso-phy: She would never create a product that she didn’t genuinely like or believe in.

“When your name is on the product, you have a responsibility to make sure it’s as good as it can be,” she says. “Being genuine to my customers about my products is really impor-tant to me.”

Unicorn PowerHer deep experience launching products was one of the main reasons Shark Tank producers reached out to Greiner in 2008 when the show was being developed.

“The casting director called and said, ‘You’re a unicorn,’ meaning there isn’t anyone out there like me who creates a product, makes it, packages it—everything from soup to nuts,” she says. “ ‘America could learn a lot from you.’ When she said that, I was immediately on board.”

To this day, when she makes a deal with a Shark Tank entrepreneur, she’s all in.

“I’m really hands-on with my entrepre-neurs,” she says. “I often talk to them at all hours of the night and on weekends. Some are more needy and I help them from the start in getting product out there, and some are further down the road. I truly love them and I do what I do to make them successful.

“I never set out to be a millionaire,” she says. “My driving force comes out of a creative need. I love creating products and sharing them with others.”

NIGHT OWL OR MORNING PERSON?

I go to bed at 1 or 2 a.m. I would say typically I’ll get six to seven hours of sleep. When we’re shooting Shark Tank, I get up at 4 and go to bed at 11 or midnight. Those are long days. FAVORITE BREAKFAST

I eat an egg-white omelet every morning. Usually with mushrooms and cheese. Cof-fee. I dilute it and I drink Swiss mocha. It’s ridiculous but good.

WATCH LISTI TiVo everything. The Good Wife was one of my all-time fa-vorites, House of Cards, Blood-line, Empire and This Is Us.

WEIRD EXERCISE RITUAL

I get on the treadmill at mid-night. I love it. I watch the shows I’ve recorded. It puts me to sleep.

HEALTHY MOVESI try to do yoga every day. I follow a DVD. You’d think I’d have it memorized, but I like the company of my DVD. FAVORITE INVENTIONMy Weekender Bag. I de-signed it for me. I wound up selling it. It’s all perfectly orga-nized and holds a ton. I travel with it everywhere.

Giving BackWhen she’s off-camera, Greiner devotes much of her time to helping others.

“I believe that if you’re lucky enough to be successful, you have a responsibility to give back. We’re all intertwined. We’re re-sponsible to make the world a better place for each other,” she says. “I always try to ask my-self, ‘Am I coming from a good place? Am I doing what’s right?’ ”

This year, for example, she will fund a college scholarship for a young woman and is working closely with Junior Achieve-ment. “I like to do things that help kids,” she says. “I’ve worked with anti-bullying and child abuse–prevention organizations, CharityBuzz and the police and firemen’s funds. I think our everyday heroes need help, and kids can’t help themselves. I have a soft spot for that.”

Pitching the American DreamAsk Greiner and she’ll tell you that Shark Tank remains so pop-ular because it “personifies the American dream” and shows viewers that they can create the life they want.

“It’s a show all ages like and can watch together,” she says. “It excites people to watch so many aspiring entrepreneurs who are full of hopes and dreams get a chance.”

The show also offers a healthy amount of drama, which keeps viewers coming back week after week.

“Shark Tank is as hopeful and inspiring as it is suspenseful,” she says. “It keeps you on the edge of

your seat as you wonder, Will they get a deal—or won’t they?”

Preaching Confidence and KindnessNo matter what happens dur-ing a segment, Greiner remains confident and always believes in herself.

“I hear from women that sometimes they’re afraid to speak up in a room full of men,” Greiner says. “Don’t ever be intimidated. You are equal. And you don’t have to appear tough to appear strong.”

Watching how Greiner han-dles herself on Shark Tank, a show where intra-shark warfare can quickly bubble to the surface, shows she practices what she preaches.

“I’m far from perfect, but I don’t feel I have to yell or be cutting to make my point,” she says. “I share my opinion and stick up for what I believe in.”

DO YOU KNOW A “HERO” FROM

A “ZERO”?Greiner’s secret formula is

equal parts experience and intuition. Finding the

answers to these questions about a product helps its

marketability: Does it solve a problem? Is it something

people need and want? Can it be made at an

affordable price? Does it appeal to a wide cross

section of people?

Go to Parade.com/twist to get Sarna's recipe for Harissa and

Goat Cheese Rugelach.

A SWEET & SAVORY

TWISTIf you’re a fan of rugelach, the buttery

crescent bites traditionally filled with jam or nuts, you’ll want to try Shannon

Sarna’s fresh twists from her new book, Modern Jewish Baker. Her flavor-packed recipes are perfect for Rosh Hashanah treats or football-season finger foods.

—Alison Ashton

PESTO PARMESAN RUGELACH1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened8 oz full-fat cream cheese, softened2 Tbsp sugar¼ tsp salt2 cups all-purpose flour½–¾ cup pesto¼ cup finely grated Parmesan1 large egg, beaten1 tsp dried basil¼ tsp coarse sea salt

1. Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth. Scrape down sides of bowl. Add sugar and salt; beat until combined. Add flour; beat just until dough comes together. Divide dough into 4 pieces. Wrap each in plastic wrap; refrigerate 1–2 hours or up to 24 hours.2. Preheat oven to 375°F.3. Roll each piece of dough into a large circle. Using the bottom of an 8- or 9-inch round cake pan as a guide, cut dough with a pizza cutter into a circle. Spread each circle of dough with 2–3 Tbsp pesto in a thin layer, leaving ¼-inch border. Sprinkle each circle with 1 Tbsp Parmesan; press gently into pesto.4. Using pizza cutter, cut each circle of dough into 8 even triangles. Starting at longer end, roll up each triangle. Place point side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush rugelach with beaten egg. Sprinkle evenly with basil and salt. Bake for 16–18 minutes, until golden. Cool on wire rack. Makes 32.

PUMPKIN CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT RUGELACHMake main recipe, but in Step 1 add ¼ cup canned pumpkin, 2 Tbsp sugar and 2 Tbsp flour to dough. Substitute ¾ cup chocolate hazelnut spread (such as Nutella) for pesto and 1 tsp sugar and ½ tsp ground cinnamon for basil and sea salt.

SPICY PIZZA RUGELACHMake main recipe, but in Step 1 add 2 Tbsp tomato paste and 3 Tbsp flour to dough. Substitute ½–¾ cup marinara or pizza sauce for pesto and ½ cup shredded mozzarella for Parmesan. For topping, sub 1 tsp dried oregano for sea salt and add ¼ tsp red pepper flakes along with the dried basil.

USE AN 8- OR 9-INCH ROUND CAKE PAN AS A GUIDE TO MAKE A PERFECT CIRCLE AND YOUR PIZZA CUTTER TO TRIM THE RUGELACH TO SIZE.
