VIVA MEXICO!: The Dodgers last night arrived in Monterrey, Mexico
for a three-game series with the San Diego Padres as the club continues
their season-long 10-day, 11-game road trip (3-5). Yesterday, the
Dodgers earned a split in their four-game series with the first-place
Diamondbacks, by virtue of a 5-2 victory in the finale. Following this
international series, the Dodgers begin a six-game homestand against the
D-backs (two games) and Cincinnati Reds (four games) next week.
The Dodgers are 3-0 against the Padres this season, following
a three-game sweep in San Diego from April 16-18. Los
Angeles outscored San Diego, 30-10, in that series. L.A.’s
success against San Diego the last eight years is clear:
Most Wins vs. Any Opponent - Since 2011
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Padres 88 (88-46, .657)
Washington Nationals vs. Mets 86 (86-51)
Kansas City Royals vs. White Sox 83 (83-55)

REPORTING FOR DUTY: Prior to the game, the Dodgers recalled
Walker Buehler for his third stint with the team this year and this
evening he is slated to make his third-career start. The Kentucky native
has allowed two runs in 10.0 innings this season, while striking out 11
batters. Buehler has also made three starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City
this season, going 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP) and holding
hitters to a .204 average, while striking out 16 against just four walks.
The 23-year-old appeared in his first big league camp this spring and
appeared in two Cactus League games (one start) for the Dodgers,
allowing just one hit over 4.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts
against one walk. Buehler’s first two starts have put him in some good
company:
Last 5 Dodgers w/ Sub-2.00 ERA & 10+ K in First 2 Career GS
2018 Walker Buehler 1.80 ERA, 11 K
2011 Nathan Eovaldi 1.64 ERA, 10 K
2006 Hong-Chih Kuo 1.50 ERA, 13 K
2002 Kazuhisa Ishii 0.00 ERA, 15 K
1995-96 Chan Ho Park 1.13 ERA, 11 K

Over three minor league seasons (2016-18), Buehler has gone
5-3 with a 3.04 ERA and has collected one save in 34 career
games (23 starts). The hard-throwing right-hander has struck
out 147 batters against just 38 walks in 106.2 career minor
league innings, while also limiting the opposition to a .200
average. Buehler was drafted by Los Angeles in the first round
(24th overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of
Vanderbilt University.
According to Stats LLC., at 23 years and 269 days, Buehler
became the fourth Dodger pitcher since 2013 (Julio Urías,
Zach Lee and Matt Magill) to start a game before his 24th
birthday when he did so on April 23.
Buehler has never faced the Padres.
DUGGIE DOUBLES: Rookie outfielder Alex Verdugo is making a
good first impression in 2018 and went 1-for-4 yesterday, while ripping
his third double of the season. Since being recalled for the second game
of last Saturday’s doubleheader, Verdugo is hitting .353 (6-for-17) with
four doubles, two runs scored and two walks in five games. The Arizona
native and Mexican-American had four home runs and 15 RBI in 19
games for Triple-A Oklahoma City before his promotion.
THE YEAR OF THE IMPROBABLE: When the Dodgers return
home, the club will honor the 30th anniversary of the 1988 World Series
champions during Alumni Weekend May 11-13 presented by Security
Benefit, with 16 members of the ’88 club expected to participate in the
weekend’s festivities and the Alumni Game on Saturday, May 12. Fans
will also have autograph and photo opportunities with Alumni at Dodger
Stadium entrances prior to games on Friday and Sunday. More
information on Alumni Weekend presented by Security Benefit can be
found online at www.dodgers.com/alumnigame, while tickets for the
rest of the Dodgers-Reds series can be purchased by visiting
www.dodgers.com/promotions or by calling 866-DODGERS.
A WINNING TRADITION: Today marks the Dodgers’ fourth trip to
Mexico and first for regular season games following pre-season trips in
1964, 1991 and 2003. The Dodgers took a trip to Monterrey during
Spring Training in 1991 for a two-game exhibition against Industriales
de Monterrey and the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers also played
exhibition games in Mexico City prior to the 1964 season against the
Red Devils and in 2003 against the New York Mets.
This weekend’s games will mark the Dodgers’ second time
playing regular season games abroad (excluding games in
Canada), following a two-game sweep of the D-backs in
Sydney to open the 2014 season.
This is Major League Baseball’s eighth regular-season series
outside of the Unites States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
The team will celebrate its rich history with Mexico on May
10 (7:10 p.m. vs. Reds), holding Mexican Heritage Night. The
game will feature special pregame programming and a ticket
package that includes an exclusive Dodgers-Mexico t-shirt
which can be purchased at Dodgers.com/Mexico.
The Dodgers and Monterrey are also linked by Mexico’s first
Little League World Series championship team in 1957,
known as the Little Giants. The 1957 Monterrey team spent the
day at Ebbets Fields with the Brooklyn Dodgers following
their championship, and over 50 years later, in 2009, members
of the Little Giants also visited Dodger Stadium.
Dodger legend and SNLA Spanish broadcaster Fernando
Valenzuela and Dodger left-hander Julio Urías both
accompanied the team to Mexico for the weekend. Urías is
rehabbing his left shoulder after undergoing surgery last June.
THE STAFF: The Dodgers’ 314 strikeouts as a pitching staff are the
most in the National League, two more than the Nationals (312).
HAVING SOME FUN: Tomorrow morning in Mexico, Major League
Baseball, the Dodgers and the Padres will dedicate refurbishments made
to the Computer Center at the Club de Niños y Niñas de Nuevo Leon, a
community center modeled after standard Boys & Girls Clubs of
America. The refurbishments to the Center, which serves 400 children
daily, will include new computers, printers, interactive blackboards and
more. Dodger legend Fernando Valenzuela, Dodger closer Kenley
Jansen and Padres’ outfielder Manuel Margot will attend the dedication,
along with Spanish-Language Broadcaster for the Dodgers Jaime
Jarrín and SNLA reporter Alana Rizzo. Executives from the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Mexico such as Jorge Garcia Segovia (President) and
Mónica Sánchez (Executive Director) will also be in attendance.
CATCHING FIRE: Yasmani Grandal was one of the few bright spots
for the Dodgers last month as he completed March/April, hitting .315
with 20 RBI, nine doubles and a .551 slugging percentage. Grandal’s
.918 OPS leads the Dodgers and ranks 15th in the National League. His
21 RBI lead the club and are tied for ninth in the NL. Grandal and Austin
Barnes have been leading the way behind the dish:
