Anchoring Achievement in Mexican Communities
Los Promotores is a three organization collaboration committed to advancing family literacy in Mexican immigrant families with students in K-‐ 2 grades at PS 20.
Funded by Deutsche Bank, the collaborative partners, led by El Centro del Inmigrante, provide three days a week after-‐school reading opportunities for parents and children to reinforce basic literacy strategies.
The program empowered parents to take a leadership role in homework management, and family literacy activities while advancing their own literacy through ESL and GED programs provided on site by the partnership. Wagner College provides professor and graduate student teachers to engage the families in literacy classes.
The families receive 6 hours is additional class work in reading and writing weekly, and the mothers received 12 hours of intensive ESL.
Wider neighborhood events are also sponsored to develop a culture of literacy These events included read-a-thons, reading parties, carnivals and parades.
Each child participant was offered additional literacy activities through Family Linc, a family arts and music literacy outreach of Lincoln Center.
Participants participate in a summer trip program and one week sleep away through a partnership with the Fresh Air Fund.Also, in summer, they have guitar, knitting and jewelry workshops.
Project Hospitality, the third partner provides administrative and operational support to the program.
