"By definition, free improvisation can beanything. Strange then, that many practi-tioners eschew the options of tonality, rhythm and coherent melody. NotMelbourne's Paper Hat. Pianist Colin Hopkins, bassist Frank DiSario and drummer AndrewGander went into the studio last winter withno plans or preconceptions and spontaneous-ly composed nine "conversations" of arrestinglyricism and radiance. They spend no timehunting for ideas, collectively zeroing in onthe first statement of a piece and grabbingit by the throat - however delicately. A quarter of the time is spent by the openingRequiem, 17 minutes of such sadness as thebereaved know only too well, intensified bypeculiar beauty that can hover over sadnesslike a halo, heightening perception. The cohesion is startling, and all three maketheir most potent recorded statements todate, the whole comparing favourably withthe Keith Jarrett Trio's brief return to freeimprovisation a few years ago".

Pianist Ben Winkelman has taken seeminglydisparate influences and melded them - viahis original compositions - into an uniquetrio approach and sound. They have all-origi-nal repertoire, some of which includes con-temporary reinterpretations of stride andearly jazz (such as Jelly Roll Morton); othersare based on Brazilian and Afro-Cubanrhythms; some incorporate elements ofArgentinean tango and contemporary classi-cal music. The result is a dynamic and excit-ing meeting between the traditional and theinnovative, and a balance between thestructure of arrangements and the freedomof improvisation.

The outstanding Australian musician RichardTognetti was appointed as Artistic Directorand Lead Violin in 1990. Under his inspiringleadership, the ACO has performed as a flexible and versatile ‘ensemble of soloists’,on modern and period instruments, as asmall chamber group, a small symphonyorchestra, and as an electro-acoustic collective. In a nod to past traditions, onlythe cellists are seated – the resulting senseof energy and individuality is one of themost commented-upon elements of an ACO concert experience.

Mossie Scanlon, now resident in Melbourne,Australia, is from the Dingle Peninsula in theKerry Gaeltacht, and anybody familiar withthe distinctive style of singing from that partof Munster will know what I'm talking aboutwhen I say he is the quintessential master ofthe technique.

He is blessed with a most musical and pleasing voice, and his choice of songs inGaelic and English suit him down to theground; they will have wide appeal for thelistener regardless of their own backgroundand musical taste.

He is also fortunate in his choice of accom-panist, Cath Connelly, harpist. She knowswhat is required, which is to make theaccompaniment complement the singer'sperformance, not override it or lead it.

With Jane's playing he is just as relaxedwhen he sings in sean nós unaccompanied.

PIANO MAKER

He’s been called insane, a visionary, and agenius. He’s Wayne Stuart, Australia’s revolu-tionary piano maker. This feature, narratedby Jana Wendt, unmasks the man behind theinstrument and we find out what makes hispiano different. Stuart tells us why he feltthe piano needed to be rethought to “bringit into the 21st century”, and we discover aremarkable connection between Stuart’smusical past, and his current success.

To date Stuart's focus has been on couplingthe strings to the bridge/soundboard and theknife edges that terminate the portion ofthe string that determines its frequency. Incollaboration with colleagues from theDepartment of Mechanical Engineering at hisuniversity, Stuart has developed a sophisti-cated bridge agraffe designed to retain thevertical mode of vibration produced whenthe hammer strikes the string. Compared tothe standard piano, these new instrumentsdemonstrate a dramatic improvement in tuning and internal damping of the string'sdecay transients.

STELLAVOX TAPE RECORDERS

STELLAVOX gained its international breakthrough with the small Sm 5 that waspopular among sound engineers, musiciansand film makers all over the world rightfrom the very beginning.

Jack Douglas recorded the Vienna Boys Choirfor NBC with the Sm 5, others climbed MountEverest with the small recorder. Even thoughthe battery's electrolyte froze, the film makers still swore by their Sm 5.

A STELLAVOX recorder was definitely usedfor the eighties film “Deborence”, that wasawarded a Caesar, and two were used forBarbara Streisand’s “Yentl” as well as for theMarlon Brando film “Divine Rapture”.

Many units went to Burbanks, - yes, wherethe Disney Studios were. The NBC TV studios, Warner Brothers, Paramount andsound studios, where Frank Sinatra was onlyone of the artists who worked there, wereall located there.

STELLAVOX recorders were particularly popular among musicians and music producers. However, just as nobody knowstoday how the top quality sound of aStradivarius violin is produced, there isequally nobody who knows why musicianslike Yehudi Menuhin or David Oistrach preferred STELLAVOX to all the otherrecorders.

One reason might certainly be the outstanding sound quality.
