It was a dark, gloomy night in early April, 1975. Joe, Matthew and John were hiding in a small hole in the middle of a jungle in Vietnam. They were all lying there, only able to see the shape of each other and hear the sound of the helicopter pulling off above, wondering what they would go through next.

They thought the Viet Cong were gone but then they all saw a little bomb flying towards them. Joe shouted “ run away. You two run, I will stay, just run! ” The younger two brothers ran and ran until they could not run any longer. Then, they heard a bang, the bang that changed their lives.

They were lying in a small rock shelter when they fell asleep.

They slept in late the next morning and they went into the jungle together to see if they could find any food that they could live on. They soon found a small stream. The drank as much as they could until they thought it would be better to look for some food. They looked for hours until they gave up.

Matthew went back to the stream to gather some water whilst John went and found leaves to make beds out of and kept looking for food. When Matthew got back John was not there. He waited for an hour before he went out to look. He found John by a banana tree. They took as many bananas as they could hold and had a feast of bananas for breakfast.

They skipped lunch and decided that the next day they would start walking. The next day the both woke up and gathered up all the bananas they thought they would need and started walking.

They walked, and walked until they had to stop. They had no idea what time it was but it was starting to get dark. They walked a little farther till they found a huge rock that they could sleep behind. They sat for a little while till John took out a letter from his son Jake. It said

“ Dear Daddy, I am going to miss you soo much. I don’t know where you are going but I know it’s war. Please stay safe!

Love Jakie! ”

Matthew woke very early the next day and thought he could hear a American soldiers voice, he could tell he was alone because he was shouting for help. He woke John up and Whispered “ I hear an Americans voice in the distance! But why would he be in the middle of the jungle? ”

John got up straight away and replied “ I have no idea why but we should find him. We could have been walking the wrong way through this dense jungle the whole time! ”

John jumped up and started following the voice. After a very short period of time they saw the outline of a big man walking their was. John started shouting to the other soldier when he realized who it was. It was a very strong looking man.

The man walked up and introduced himself. He said “ Hi, I’m Jake brown. When I got lost in here us Americans looked like we were loosing. I’m worried the Americans have left without us.”

Matthew and John looked at Jake. Jake saw the expressions on their face's and said “ Why do you look so worried? Who are you guys? ”

Matthew was the first to speak, “ I’m Matthew Thompson and this is my younger brother John. We better get moving or we could get stuck in Vietnam with the Communists in power. ”

They all agreed and started walking. Jake walked very fast and it was hard for the others to catch up. The men all thought it would take hours to find other Americans but it only took around 3 hours till they found roads.

There was no one there. They walked along the street till they saw lots of North Vietnamese soldiers and an American helicopter taking off of the American embassy in Vietnam.

Jake suddenly whispered “ We’re too late, they are gone.”

They watched the airplane until they could see it no longer and didn’t say a word.

They stood there for what seemed like hours and then Jake started walking to the forest. They followed him and lived there from then on never to

see their family's again.
