We WILL Get Through This TOGETHER!!! The COVID-19 Pandemic has brought about a different way of being in

our communities and world. We have always said the ETS middle name

is “flexibility” and we are getting a triple dose during these times. We

wholeheartedly agree with Governor Beshear. “We will get through this,

TOGETHER!” ETS staff have been working (remotely from home) via

phone calls, e-mails, text messaging, Facebook and lots of online Zoom

meetings to continue our services to participants. We’ve done lots of

backpedaling, thinking “outside the box”, and re-structuring how we do

what we do. While we are not permitted in-person activities, we are mov-

ing many of our services into the online realm. We also know that many

of our participants do not have access to home computers and/or reliable

Internet services, so please be sure to respond to all ETS mailings.

Lots of INFORMATION!!! This newsletter is very lengthy, but contains lots of important infor-

mation, details, links, dates, times and contact information. We

hope you will take the time to read through it and follow up on any

ETS connections or lead.

Fall Recruitment If you know of any 6th –12th grade students who would be interested in the Educational Talent Search Program, please encourage them to sub-mit an ETS Application. The application can be found on the ETS Web-site at: https://ets.eku.edu/ets-forms. ETS SERVICES Even though we are not able to meet in person, ETS will continue to pro-vide services to our participants, one way or another. We have moved many activities into an online, virtual format and will be offering a variety of opportunities to our participants. We also know, all of our students do not have reliable Internet access and for that reason we will also offer ser-vices to some participants via e-mail, phone, and US Mail.

Robertson and Stepp Represent at the

30th Annual National Student Leadership Congress

The Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program at Eastern Kentucky University is proud to recognize two students who participated in the 30th Annual National Student Leadership Congress (NSLC). The NSLC is hosted annually by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) for selected students in pre-college TRIO programs, from across the nation. The all-expense paid conference was originally slated to take place at Georgetown University in Washington

D.C, but the Covid-19 pandemic changed up all arrangements to an online, virtual only format.

Isabella “Izzy” Robertson from Madison Southern High School in Berea and Kenton Stepp from Estill County High School in Irvine, were the ETS Scholars selected to represent their high school, community and state at the national

conference, which took place June 15-19, 2020.

Izzy is the daughter of Jonathan & Theresa Robertson and is a junior at Madison Southern High School. She has been an ETS Scholar for 3 years and enjoys the outdoors, loves spending time with family, listening to mu-sic and is a member of the Madison Southern Marching Band, MSHS wrestling team and FCCLA. Izzy said, “The NSLC was a great experi-ence”. She said she really enjoyed getting to listen to the keynote speak-ers, as they encouraged students to have a positive impact on their future. She said she was very impressed and humbled with the opportunity to talk with state representatives. Izzy’s favorite part of the NSLC was getting to

break down in smaller groups in preparation for the Mock Congress.

Kenton, a senior at Estill County High School, is the son of Raymond & Dana Stepp of Irvine. He has participated in the Educational Talent Search Program since 6th grade and is an avid member of the ECHS Marching Engineer Band. During the NSLC, Kenton enjoyed learning about transfor-mational leadership. He said, “As a transformational leader, we want to inspire and influence others to achieve beyond their normal limits”. Kenton also enjoyed the opportunity to speak with the aide for U.S. Senator, Mitch McConnell and discuss how the Educational Talent Search program had

helped him with college and career preparation.

ETS plans to send four ETS Scholars to the 31st National Student Leadership Congress next summer.

“As a transformational leader, we want to inspire and influence others to achieve beyond their normal limits”...Kenton Stepp

“Much about success is in the follow-up, follow-thru, and finish-ing what we start” … Zig Ziglar
