Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

The Lotto NRFL action will not be for the faint-hearted this weekend as we are now entering crunch time and the pressure is on each team to make sure the goals they set for themselves at the start of the season are realised. We are very much on the home straight in the Women’s Premier as there are only three matches remaining after this round. The title race appears to be narrowing into a showdown between leaders Claudelands Rovers and reigning champions Forrest Hill-Milford United but third-placed Glenfield Rovers might have something to say about that and have the opportunity to do so on Sunday in hosting Claudelands at McFetridge Park. It’s a big weekend for Glenfield as the club’s male team will also be involved in the most significant men’s Premier League clash when first-placed Eastern Suburbs pay a visit to the defending champions, that match also taking place at McFetridge Park on Sunday in the second stanza of a women’s and men’s double header. The most high-pressure game in the second tier is Manurewa’s trip to Takapuna as both sides look to secure their Division One status while the meeting between the main title challengers, Papakura City and Oratia United, will hog the Division Two headlines. In the programme this week, we preview these games and all others, as well as featuring photos from Phototek of several recent matches. As always, we also have all the up-to-date tables, team progress graphs, golden boot charts and squads so there is a wealth of info at your fingertips! Our Lotto NRFL social media platforms continue to be the place to go for all score updates, results, goal details and other news – be sure to tag us @LottoNRFL with your updates from the sideline! Good luck for your game!

Programme 2015

Three Kings United vs Central United

Keith Hay Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Martin Neale Assistant Referees: Ravi Prasad, Nick Kang

Having emerged on the right side of a real six-pointer against defending champions Glenfield Rovers, Central are now genuine title contenders and a league and Chatham Cup double is very much on. Three Kings made a bright start to the season before suffering an alarming loss of form but have now snapped out of their losing run with a 2-1 win over Waitakere City, making this central derby an intriguing prospect.

Bay Olympic vs Melville United Olympic Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Wolken Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Torres Chang

Melville made another entry into their ever-growing chapter of defeats last weekend but there were plenty of positives for coach Steve Williams to take out of the 3-2 loss to Eastern Suburbs. His charges fought back from three goals down to nearly take a point against the league leaders and he will want them to show the same fighting spirit in this clash with mid-table Bay Olympic, a match which offers Melville much greater hope of adding to their points tally.

Birkenhead United vs Western Springs Shepherds Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Fisher Assistant Referees: Steve Merriman, Tom Woo

With the likes of Chad Coombes, Jack Hobson-McVeigh, Danny Robinson and Daniel Morgan all in the ranks, Birkenhead possess one of the most star-studded line-ups in the league. But they are ten points off the top and in great danger of failing to repeat last season’s runners-up placing, making this match against lower mid-table Western Springs a must win. Springs are in a rut after losing their last three games.

Onehunga Sports vs Waitakere City Waikaraka Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Nick Waldron Assistant Referees: Wandyck Freitas, Caleb Moffatt

Former All White Jake Butler has now been at the helm of Waitakere as player-coach for a handful of rounds but the change in management has not had the desired effect. The loss to Three Kings was Waitakere’s eleventh of the campaign and they are being kept off the bottom only by the poor form of Melville. Sports will therefore be heavy favourites here and will have a fresh set of legs after the postponement of their meeting with Hamilton.

Glenfield Rovers vs Eastern Suburbs McFetridge Park | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Simon Lount Assistant Referees: Faiyaz Ali, Steve Merriman

Rovers are in the second week of a fortnight that is likely to define their season and determine whether they can successfully defend their title. Having allowed Central to leave McFetridge Park with all three points last time out, they cannot afford to let Suburbs do the same. They are currently behind the leaders by five points and, if that gap is extended this weekend, it’s hard to see Glenfield being able to claw it back.

Hamilton Wanderers vs East Coast Bays Porritt Stadium | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens Assistant Referees: Bruce Horrox, Dominic Hopkirk

If the wet weather returns this weekend, Hamilton will be praying the Porritt Stadium surface holds up to it as they will not want to be left kicking their heels for a second week running. East Coast Bays are taking some good form into this one after winning two and drawing two of their last four matches. They will need to be at their best, however, as they were outclassed 4-1 by Hamilton in the sides’ previous meeting.

Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Eastern Suburbs

Becroft Park | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Tony Wall Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Hilary Osborne

Defending champions Forrest Hill had a favour done for them last weekend by Western Springs, who held leaders Claudelands to a draw. That allowed Forrest Hill to move within two points of their title rivals and breathe new life into their bid for back-to-back championships. Claudelands face another tough assignment at Glenfield so a win over Suburbs could take Forrest Hill to the top and, with only three matches to follow, you’d then back them to stay there and finish the job.

Three Kings United vs Fencibles United Keith Hay Park | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Aiden Moffatt Assistant Referees: Reza Al Rabea, Brandon Day

The title has long been out of reach for Three Kings but a top-three placing is still a realistic aim so there is plenty of incentive for Alan Hindson’s charges to sweep aside Fencibles. Hannah Robert scored her sixth of the season in last weekend’s win over Papatoetoe and, with star striker Martine Puketapu recovering from a serious injury, will need to join forces with Jasmine Pereira to provide the goals. The main issue for Fencibles coach Angela Wallbank will be motivating her players as they seem to have only pride to play for now.

Lynn-Avon United vs Papatoetoe Ken Maunder Park | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Paul Mason Assistant Referees: Isaac McNickle, Caleb Moffatt

These sides will both be grateful that Fencibles have endured such a horrific campaign as they would otherwise be fighting it out with each other to avoid the drop. Having Fencibles acting as a safety net below them means this match isn’t quite the six-pointer it would have otherwise been but it still offers the teams an excellent opportunity to pocket a rare win. It was Lynn-Avon who triumphed last time, earning a narrow 1-0 victory.

Glenfield Rovers vs Claudelands Rovers McFetridge Park | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson Assistant Referees: Torres Chang, Kevin McMillan

Most of the focus for neutral observers will be on this meeting of the Rovers as it brings two of the heavyweights together in a clash that will have big ramifications on the title race. Even if they are not to take the title themselves, Glenfield can have a massive say on who does earn that honour by their performance here. Indeed, this is one of the few occasions that local rivals Forrest Hill will be praying for a Glenfield win.

Western Springs vs Norwest United Seddon Fields | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Wendy McNeely Assistant Referees: John Kimber, Rhys Kimber

Springs did have an outside chance of claiming the title after a thrilling 4-3 win over Forrest Hill three rounds ago but successive draws have cost them and those dreams of glory are now hanging by a thread. Lifting the trophy does remain a mathematical possibility though so they must make sure they take maximum points from their remaining fixtures and hope the sides above them crumble under the pressure.

50 Years of Local Pride

Programme 2015

Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Metro

Becroft Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Norman Assistant Referees: Chris Casey, Luke Agnew

Metro made hard work of their home win over struggling Takapuna last Friday – they nabbed the winner with one of the last kicks of the match – and will need to perform much better here against one of the best sides in the league. The records of each team point towards a comfortable home win as Forrest Hill are the top scorers in the division while Metro have let in more goals than any other top-six side.

Ngaruawahia United vs Tauranga City United Centennial Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar Assistant Referees: Sean Coon, Steve Bland

Ngaruawahia will be disappointed to have followed up their win over Metro – just their second of the campaign – by returning to losing ways against Manurewa, especially as a win there would’ve lifted them out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. Despite being ten points off the pace, Tauranga still harbour realistic title hopes as they have games in hand on all the sides above them. There is no room for slip ups though so their concentration levels will need to be high here.

Waiuku vs North Shore United Massey Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox Assistant Referees: Bruce McGrath, Dmitriy Sabitov

This sees one of the title contenders travel to an outfit looking to stave off the threat of relegation. The gulf in class between the sides was emphasised earlier in the season when North Shore triumphed 5-1 in the corresponding fixture and Waiuku will be keen to show they’ve improved since then. They have not performed well against northern opposition this season though, losing four of their six matches against sides from north of the bridge.

Takapuna vs Manurewa Taharoto Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andy Holdsworth Assistant Referees: Mark Fleming, Khalid El Gana

This is another north vs south match up but that’s where the similarities to the Waiuku-North Shore game end. Unlike those sides, Takapuna and Manurewa have experienced similar campaigns and both have the main goal of making sure they stay in the division. Manurewa are better positioned to achieve that after winning two from three and another victory here should just about guarantee their survival while forcing Takapuna further into the mire.

Ellerslie vs Hibiscus Coast Michaels Avenue | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 6pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury Assistant Referees: Peter Lamb, John Bennett

These sides experienced contrasting fortunes in the previous round, the Coasters triumphing 3-1 over Waiuku while Ellerslie were thumped 4-1 at Tauranga. That outcome could prove costly for Ellerslie as they are now six points off the promotion pace and facing an uphill battle to force themselves into contention. Trent Mayes added another goal to his tally for Hibiscus in their latest win and now leads the golden boot race with 13.

Mangere United vs Mt Albert-Ponsonby Centre Park | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor Assistant Referees: Dave Doidge, Neil Tobin

Each side is in need of a morale-boosting performance after being comprehensively beaten last weekend, Mt Albert 4-0 at North Shore and Mangere 3-1 by Forrest Hill. They both fell to teams pushing for the title though and will be relieved to have a more winnable game to look forward to this time. Mangere have a free-scoring frontline and are coming up against the worst defence in the league so the smart money would be on a home win.

Lotto NRFL Division 1 Preview Round 18

Lynn-Avon United vs Claudelands Rovers

Ken Maunder Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson Assistant Referees: Salman Ali, Theo Stalls

Lynn-Avon received some welcome respite from their nightmare season when last weekend’s match with Te Atatu was postponed due to the bad weather. But their inactivity had the unfortunate consequence of seeing them slip further behind in the battle to avoid the drop, second-from-bottom Papatoetoe moving six points ahead with a win over Albany. Claudelands have proven difficult to break down in recent weeks, drawing their last pair of matches 1-1.

Onehunga Mangere United vs North Force Mangere Domain | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault Assistant Referees: Kevin McMillan, Charles Nothnagel

The promotion hopes of North Force are currently hanging in the balance as they are just outside the top two but have played more matches than both sides above them. In other circumstances, last week’s draw with title favourites Papakura would have been deemed a good result but Force needed all three points really and, with Papakura meeting second-placed Oratia, must make sure they get the job done here.

Te Atatu vs Papatoetoe

Te Atatu Peninsula Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Kerr Assistant Referees: Steve Peeters, Tony Wall

Papatoetoe did themselves a world of good by beating fellow strugglers Albany last weekend and another win could see them climb out of the bottom two. Recent signing Iwa Shaker scored in that match and coach Mark Holt will be hoping the former Auckland City striker’s goals can pull his side well clear of danger. Philip Paul was also on target and now has seven strikes to his name – no other Papatoetoe player has scored more than three.

Manukau City vs Albany United

Walter Massey Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: John McCoskrie Assistant Referees: Martin Huang, Peter Caffell

Papakura’s trip to Oratia offers Manukau the chance to make up ground on at least one of those sides, both if the match ends in a draw. Anything less than three points against Albany would therefore be hugely frustrating, especially as the visitors appear there for the taking after being comprehensively beaten by second-from-bottom Papatoetoe. Another defeat could land them in hot water in the relegation places.

Papakura City vs Oratia United

McLennan Park | Saturday 25 July | Kick-off: 5pm | Referee: Carl Watkins Assistant Referees: Faiyaz Ali, Morgan Breuer

This is the highlight of the Division Two action and could well determine the destination of the title. A point ahead and with a game in hand, Papakura’s fate lies at their own feet but a defeat here would give the impetus to Oratia. These sides each possess one of the most lethal strikers in the league with Papakura’s Valerio Nawatu scoring 17 goals to Mark Withers’ 15 for Oratia. And there’s plenty of goals elsewhere in the respective teams so this is unlikely to be a scoreless stalemate.

AFC Fury vs Fencibles United

Maramatanga Park | Sunday 26 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Brett Willis Assistant Referees: Paul Shakes, Ashley Wilson

The campaigns of these sides are both meandering to mid-table mediocrity, which will be far more of a disappointment to Fencibles than Fury. Newly-promoted to the NRFL, just staying in the division will represent success for Fury but Fencibles would have been hoping to launch a promotion bid. Zane Christiansen was on fire in front of goal earlier in the season but has not found the net since mid-May and Fencibles could do with him rediscovering his scoring touch.
