UNION STOCKYARDSWhat is it about hardcore music that you like so much?Ian Mackaye started it. Next question. Just jokes. Hardcore and punk rock are a sharing of ideas as much as it’s a style of music. As much as those ideas tend to be unpopular they tend to unify like minded people. I guess it just feels like home.

What are some other bands you guys have been in?Ryan has been in tons of band. Flesh Auger and One of These Days to name a few. Jonny was also in Flesh Auger along with Standstill and the Undecided. Dave started in Caution. Then he and I started Saving Face. Dave was also in the Knuckledraggers for a bit too.

Are you guys pro Winnipeg? What could make the punk/hardcore scene better?I’d say we’re proud to be from here. It’s a hard nosed city with an amazing arts and music scene. I just recently got a Winnipeg tribute tattoo with the old one great city

sign, the Albert, union stockyards tower and Louis riel in it. That should answer the question haha.

Are there any other cities outside of Winnipeg that you feel have a kick ass punk/hardcore scene?Well we played with Greys from Toronto recently and slates from Edmonton and they were both super rad . We also played with Sights and Sounds from Toronto and they kill it.

Who are some of your current favourite Winnipeg punk and hardcore bands? There’s so many. Clipwing, Triggers, Dan-gercat, Mobina Galore. Fuck I’m gonna forget so many. I was really impressed with Harley James Flett when I saw him live, and Bearfight too. This scene is just killing it now!

HARDCORE PUNKBEARFIGHTWhat is it about hardcore music that you like so much? The intensity, the honesty and element of punk to it all. You can spot a fake a mile away, if you’re not being honest and just being a poser it’s completely obvious.

What are some other bands you guys have been in?Seventeen, Up n Atom, High Five Drive, The Legion of Liquor, Clipwing, In 2 Months and probably a few more.

Are you guys pro Winnipeg? What could make the punk/hardcore scene better? In terms of the scene most definitely, it’s seriously thriving and most weekends there’s way too much going on to get to all the shows. I’d like to see more hardcore shows that are fun and to lose some of the elitist vibe there is at times. More punk, more hardcore! Personally the best thing about Winnipeg is the music and the people that go to the shows, that’s why I’m here!

Are there any other cities outside of Winnipeg that you feel have a kick ass punk/hardcore scene?Sweden in general has always been a great country for new and unique punk/hardcore and metal, definitely trendsetters. Vancouver’s crust scene is apparently pretty good too, if you’re into that thing.

Who are some of your current favourite Winnipeg punk and hardcore bands?Union Stockyards, Mobina Galore, Mercy Street, Rebel Yell... I could list a ton of bands but these are the ones that we’ve seen lately that are killing it and the bands we’d love to play shows with.

REBEL YELLSome of the most interesting covers often come from artists of a completely different genre, so what did Rebel Yell do? They took 5 tracks from their hip-hop album Social Studies (2011) and reworked them as hard-core thrash songs. Huh, what!? That’s what I thought too.

As a songwriter I know it’s hard enough to write just one song, let alone write a second version of it with a completely different feel, so kudos to them for recording Live From My Parents Basement.

They’ve taken lyric heavy hip-hop songs, increased the BMPs a shit ton, cranked the amps to 11 and left us with a blisteringly fast and killer stripped down version of their original tracks. Recurring references to partying, playing hockey, and busted gear certainly speak to us Winnipegers.

After listening to this album for the first time I had no idea they were a hip-hop group, but they certainly did a fucking awesome job of fooling me! I hope to see more hardcore tracks from Rebel Yell in the near future.

My favourite track is “Guzzlin’ a Dozen”. It makes me want to party all night -- which isn’t good for my liver or my bank account because I’ve been listening to this song countless times every day crushin’ Old Mil’s … as if I need another excuse. Thanks Rebel Yell.

No really, thanks for this sick 12min album!

CLIPWINGMELODIC PUNKROCK

THE ALBUM:Ashford EP (2015 European Release)

Ashford is the most recent release from Winnipeg, MB band Clipwing. The album is currently only available in Europe, though they sold 50 test presses at their latest home-town show, so if you were 1 of 50, lucky you!

The stand out track for me would have to be the lead off song “Ashford”. It speaks to the feeling of longing that resonates in us all. It makes me miss all the things I’ve lost along the way.

What sets them apart from the, in my opinion, over saturated “melodic post-hard-core punk” market these days is that you be-lieve them. Honesty and passion ring through the entire 17mins and you can’t help but be in the music as much as the band is right off the hop. “It’s the heart that matters most in the end”.

Lead singer, Martin’s vocals are such a key element to this band. The dynamic of his growl is perfect. You feel the intensity while still being able to catch the lyrics.

Ashford has the ability to bring you back to the 90s. Biking home from friends houses with Fenix TX and Saves the Day in the disc-man. Who doesn’t love the days where your biggest worry was which high-school you were going to go to. But that’s not the real-ity when you grow up, drinking away your problems is.

I was stoked to see I was given some bonus acoustic versions of these songs and I’ll say, they translate just the same stripped down! That’s no easy feat. I suppose I shouldn’t have brought this up because you won’t get to hear them, muhahaha.

So what’s the take-away here? Buy this album as soon as you can and don’t be a dick and steal it … buy it. Ashford is proof these guys are a hardworking band who deserve the utmost respect in the punk community.
