Entrance Antiphon O come, let us worship God

and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God.

Psalm 147 Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.

Glory to God Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,

we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,

You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Job 7:1-4,6-7

Job spoke, saying: Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery? Are not his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me. If in bed I say, “When shall I arise?”

then the night drags on; I am filled with restlessness until the dawn. My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle;

they come to an end without hope. Remember that my life is like the wind;

I shall not see happiness again.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

I Corinthians 9:16-19,22-23

Brothers and sisters: If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it! If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. What then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some. All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Mark 1:29-39 On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Scripture readings and prayers provided by the United States Conference

of Catholic Bishops. Reprinted with permission.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name,

for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Holy

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the

name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection

until you come again.

When we eat this Bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord,

until you come again.

Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection

you have set us free.

Communion Antiphon Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,

his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul,

and the hungry he fills with good things.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2021

Mystery of Faith Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray… the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Lamb of God Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

grant us peace.

St. Charles Borromeo Church February 7, 2021

This weekend, we conclude Catholic Schools Week 2021. In last week’s column, I gave an overview of St. Charles School’s ninety-eight year history. This weekend, I would like to tell you about Catholic

education at St. Charles in the twenty-first century. I attended grade school at St. Patrick’s in West Park from 1955 to 1963. I remember my teachers using chalk boards, flash cards and, once-in-a-while, a film strip or a movie (with those big reels of film!) There were no other electronic devices. When I was in the sixth grade, a television showed up in class for one day so that we could watch the inauguration of John F. Kennedy, our first Catholic president. In the seventh grade, we had a television in class for just one day to watch native Ohioan, John Glenn, land in his space capsule after orbiting the earth.

What a difference in grade school today! St. Charles students are introduced to computers while in Kindergarten. In addition to a fully-equipped computer lab, there are computers in every classroom. Our two Science labs and all classrooms are equipped with Interactive panels/smartboards. St. Charles teachers all subscribe to STEAM learning: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math. Our teachers are proficient at teaching children in person as well as synchronously at home.

St. Charles students have at their disposal 200 Chromebooks and 100 iPads. All students learn how to use Google Classroom. We also proudly feature an up-to-date, award-winning, library. (Modern educational research indicates that reading from actual books – the “old-fashioned way” – is best for retention.) Back in my grade school days, we had one teacher, all day long, who taught all subjects. Today, at St. Charles, our students enjoy the talents of an art teacher, music teacher, computer instructor, and gym teacher. Eighty percent of our graduates go on to Catholic high schools. And principals of all high schools, public and private, tell me that they welcome St. Charles graduates as “always well and fully prepared.” But first and foremost, we are a Catholic school. Weekly Mass, Reconciliation, Stations, devotions, and an atmosphere of faith are all an essential part of everything we do. St. Charles has produced 14,500 graduates since 1927. We still follow the Lord’s words, “Go out to all the world and tell the Good News!”

Bishop Malesic Appoints Diocesan Education Task Force

In response to changing demographics, enrollment challenges, escalating costs, and a need for renewed vision, Cleveland Bishop Edward Malesic has appointed a 50-member task force of school staff, diocesan staff, clergy, educators, and businesspersons, to complete an overall diocesan plan for Catholic education involving Quality and Catholicity, Leadership, Data Systems, Finances, Governance, Marketing, and Communications. This effort is entitled “Keeping the Faith: The Future of Catholic Schools.” They are to make their final report in May of 2022.

CONSECRATION

TO ST. JOSEPH

Did you know that Pope Francis has declared an

entire year dedicated to St. Joseph? The Year of St. Joseph began on December 8, 2020 and

continues until December 8, 2021. St. Joseph

is the patron saint of many places, institutions, organizations and even of the Universal Church. Now is the time for us to turn to Saint Joseph and seek his

intercession so that we can become better servants of the Lord. Fr. Josh is leading a group of parishioners to do a Consecration

to St. Joseph. Utilizing Fr. Donald Calloway’s book “Consecration to St. Joseph,” Fr. Josh looks forward to helping

us grow in our relationship and devotion to St. Joseph. All are welcome to make the consecration. The consecration begins

on February 15th and ends on March 19th, the Solemnity of

St. Joseph. Email Fr . Josh at fr josh@stchar lesonline.org or text him at 216-302-7816 to let him know you are interested.

WEEKLY RCIA REFLECTIONS

February 7th –

Fifth Sunday

in Ordinary Time

St. Paul tells the Corinthians that he becomes weak to save at least some for the sake of the Gospel. We take for granted that it is our responsibility to proclaim the gospel in our words and in our actions. This is a practice that can take a lifetime. Those who are in RCIA are learning the Gospel through YOU, the parishioners of St. Charles. They are observing your words and your deeds and they hope to see you living out your faith each day. How do you proclaim the gospel in word and deed? - Fr. Josh
