Administrators’ Message: It’s hard to believe that the month of June is already upon us! Staff and students
here at L.H. Fréchette are hard at work in academic, athletic and social events!
June is also the month of the yearly EQAO provincial assessments for our grade
three and six students. This year our EQAO tests fall within the dates of May 26th –
June 5th. Parents/guardians of students in all grades three and six classes have been
informed of specific dates through letters sent via email. The information resulting
from these assessments serve to inform our school improvement planning goals and
help us set goals to support further student achievement and well being.
Our school Track & Field meet will be held again at Vaughan Secondary School, on
Tuesday June 3rd. Students and teachers in grades 4 to 8 have been participating
and training for the event. Students who qualify will proceed to the Area Event on
June 10th/11th at Vaughan Secondary School. The Regional Meet will take place
on June 18th at Stouffville Arena. We wish all participants much fun! Thank you to
our School Council for supporting this event with pizza. Our Student Leadership
Team will be selling freezies for $1.00 to support Helping Hands.
On Wednesday, June 18th, we will be hosting our Grade 8 Graduation ceremony!
All grade 8 students will be honoured and celebrated in a ceremony at the school
and have been invited to join us for dinner afterwards. Families of Grade 8 students
will receive invitations to the ceremony and we look forward to celebrating with
them on this day.
Assessment is an ongoing teaching and learning cycle that culminates in two report-
ing periods, February and June. We encourage you to take the time to speak with
your children about their learning, the conversations, big ideas and work they do as
assessments are shared with the home. It is important for our children to be active
partners in the assessment process and to be able to articulate what they are learning,
how they are being assessed, and what they need to do to succeed. Our June report
card will be sent home on Wednesday, June 25th. Thursday June 26th is an early
dismissal day. The afternoon on this day provides time for administrators, elemen-
tary teachers and support staff to engage in staff meetings which support school im-
provement planning. As has been our practice over the last few years, students will
attend school during the morning of Thursday June 26th only. Students will be dis-
missed early that day at 12:20 pm. Arrangements have been made to ensure that
students who are normally bussed to and from school will receive transportation at
this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after school care should make
appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.
Finally, we would like to extend our invitation to our annual school barbecue on
June 5th at 4:00 pm at which time we also invite our future grade one parents/
guardians and students to visit LH Fréchette. Our warm thanks to our terrific, sup-
portive School Council for organizing this wonderful community event with which
to celebrate another successful year here at L.H. Fréchette!
Respectfully yours, Mme Furlin et Mme Korinis

TRACK & FIELD
Your children have been running and jumping and throwing things ... and it's been WONDERFUL! All students in grades 4-8 have had the opportunity of practicing Track & Field events at the school during the month of May, and now have our "Fréchette Track & Field" day to look forward to on June 3rd at Vaughan Secondary School, where they will participate as athletes, time scorers and helpers. Students will then be chosen to represent our school at the Area event (June 10/11 at Vaughan SS), with aspirations of qualifying for Regionals (June 18 at Stouffville arena). Good luck to all our Fréchette athletes! We look forward to several exciting, sports-filled, activity-based days ahead!
Hours of Instruction for French Immersion YRDSB offers a French Immersion program that is highly sought after. As we continue to implement
recommendations from our recent French as a Second Language (FSL) review, we are making a slight
adjustment, based on our research, that will provide better consistency within our schools while also better
meeting student needs. Research shows the importance of time spent learning in French at the beginning of
a program. In Grades 1 to 3, YRDSB students receive 100 per cent of their instruction in French.
Beginning in Grade 4, English instruction is introduced for a number of subjects. Starting in the 2014-15
school year, weekly instructional time in Grades 4-8 will be shared equally between French and English
language of instruction. Students will accumulate at least 5,000 hours of French language instruction by the
end of Grade 8, which far exceeds the 3,800 hours mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Education. YRDSB
remains deeply committed to providing high quality and sustainable French as a Second Language (FSL)
instruction.

Congratulations to all performers and thank you to all parents/guardians who came to our Primary, Jun-ior/Intermediate Spring Concerts in May. Dear Parents/Guardians,
As most of our students and staff know, our leadership team is endeavouring to raise money for our local
and global initiatives - Covenant House, a shelter for homeless youth in Toronto, and Helping Hands, a
worldwide disaster relief foundation organized by CMAT (the Canadian Medical Assistance Team).
On June 5th , 2014, at the school-wide BBQ, the leadership team will be holding a clothing and school
supply drive. Bring new or unused clothing in adult sizes such as t-shirts and sweatshirts and bring pack-
aged school supplies such as pencils and backpacks. For more information, please visit:
http://www.covenanthousetoronto.ca/homeless-youth/Donate-Items
These items will be donated to Covenant House to help homeless youth attend school and have the same
opportunities to live as we do.
Here at L.H. Fréchette, our goal is to raise $1,500 for Helping Hands to help with medical relief in the
Philippines. On November 8th, 2013, a massive typhoon hit the Philippines killing over 10 thousand people
and leaving tens of thousands without power, shelter, nourishment and medical aid. At Fréchette, we are
striving to raise money and we need your help and support. We are organizing several events and activities
such as:
- Bubble Gum Day: On May 30th we will be selling bubblegum at the school for a payment of $1. Students
will be allowed to chew gum all day.
- BBQ fundraising: On June 5th, the Girls on the Run team will be selling lemonade, freezies and other
snacks. All money raised and extra donations will be given to Helping Hands.
- Coin Drive: the leadership team will place jars in every classroom. Students can bring in pennies, nickels,
dimes, quarters, loonies and toonies and place them in the jars.
For more information, please visit: http://www.canadianmedicalteams.org
We encourage all families to help support these great causes.
Sincerely,
The Leadership Team

Bussing Information Parents/guardians are reminded to check the web site www.schoolbuscity.com where they can look up information based on their home address. Parents/guardians are reminded to check this web-site every year in August to see if there have been any adjustments made to the time of their child’s bus.
Planning Ahead Help us plan ahead by informing us of your plans for next year. If you know that you will be moving and your children will be changing schools, please let us know as soon as possible. This will help us be more accurate when determining staffing and preparing class lists.

HEALTHY SCHOOLS
"You're the Chef" Jump Rope for Heart was a big success! Students have been active, skipping outside during
recess. The total collected by LHF and donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation was
$2,928.90. Thanks to everyone who supported this event. You're the Chef is wrapping up for this spring. Thirteen students in grades 5 and 6 are enjoying
cooking in the staff room and learning about healthy eating. Students have made pumpkin apple
muffins, vermicelli and greens, pizzadillas and more kid friendly food. Thanks to all of the
teacher volunteers who helped organize and supervise this after school program. Thanks to
Mesdames Dutil, Glynn, Trevisan, Plourde and Cohen. The year is almost done and another great year is almost over. We want to thank all the
volunteers and the Fréchette community who helped this year. Without you these events would not
happen. We want to thank all the students who helped with the milk and lunch programs to name a few.
A special thank you to Mme Cohen who made everything run smoothly. We will see you again in the next school year at our first meeting (TBD) when we plan our events for
2014-15. In the mean time feel free to email Judy at [email protected] with any ideas or suggestions. Remember while enjoying the sunny warm days to be Sun Smart. Use sunscreen and wear a hat
and enjoy the warm days of summer! Also enjoy the fresh Ontario fruits and vegetables the
summer has to offer, see you in September. Have a great summer and stay safe!
ECO SCHOOLS
The Eco Team completed an application to be certified Eco Schools platinum. Students
from the Eco Team displayed their environmental knowledge when they showed Matt,
the Eco Schools representative around the school. We are waiting to hear whether we
achieved the Eco Schools platinum designation. The two raised bed vegetable gardens are now built, planted and being cared for by the Eco
Team and other students. A variety of vegetables have been planted and hopefully will be
harvested during the next few months. Thanks to the School Council and Eco Team for
funding this initiative which will help students at Fréchette learn more about plants,
gardening, growing food, etc. Classes are invited to do lessons in the garden and to help out
with maintenance.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS WANTED Parents/guardians are invited to join the Healthy Schools or Eco Schools Team. These teams help plan
and implement these two very important initiatives. Contact Mme Cohen if you are interested in volun-
teering your time for 2014-2015.
RECYCLING Please send in any newer cell phones and digital cameras that you no longer use. Consider
donating these items to us to help with our Eco School initiatives. Thank you for your support.

Volunteers All volunteers who have direct contact with students MUST have a valid Volunteer Vulner-
able Sector Screening Check. If you are planning to help on a field trip, drive students to
athletic events, volunteer in the school, etc., the Board now requires us to have this check
prior to any contact with students (even if you have volunteered previously). Parents/Guardians must request a letter for volunteer purposes from the office, signed by
Mme Furlin before going to the Police Services office to request the form. Letters are
available from the office. Please get your Police Screening Check as soon as possible as it sometimes takes several
weeks to process.

Peer at [email protected] if you need to know about certain dates, or would like to share the date of
your event for others’ planning purposes.

Fréchette assumes no responsibility in the coordination or maintenance of this calendar.
