Gary Balsamo, DVM, PMH&TM Gary is the State Public Health Veterinarian and Assistant State Epidemiologist at the Louisiana Office of Public Health. Dr. Balsamo serves as chair of the Louisiana Animal Welfare Commission and as the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals’ representa ve on the Louisiana Environmental Educa on Commission. Dr. Balsamo is a 1981 graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and a 1999 graduate of the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Cynthia Benbow, D.V.M., C.V. A. Dr. Cynthia Benbow is CEO of Benbow Veterinary Services, LLC and a Cer fied Veterinary Acupuncturist with 16 years of experience integra ng alterna ve therapies into veterinary business models. A na ve of Metairie, Louisiana, Dr. Benbow is a 2000 graduate of Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Benbow also completed the Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians program at Colorado State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 2004, and since then has also returned to CSU to assist with the course. Being a prac cing veterinarian/acupuncturist is one thing, but owning a company and understanding how to successfully integrate alterna ve therapies into a business model is another. Dr. Benbow understands and explains the costs involved, poten al profitability, and trade‐offs of doing so. Jude Bordelon, DVM, MS Dr. Jude T. Bordelon grew up in the small town of Hessmer, LA. Growing up on a small farm and surrounded by a variety of farm animals and pets, he pursued his passion for science, medicine, and animals. The combina on of his three areas of interest took him to LSU where he obtained both his undergraduate (’98) and Veterinary School (’02) degrees. A er gradua on, Dr. Bordelon relocated to S llwater, OK to complete a grueling one‐year rota ng internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Oklahoma State University. He remained at Oklahoma State to complete a rigorous three‐year residency program in small animal surgery. He did so while pursuing his Masters of Science degree. A er successful comple on of his residency, he remained at Oklahoma as an associate professor in small animal surgery for two years. He later returned to Louisiana in 2008. Once back in his beloved home state he has thrived in both private prac ce and academic environments (LSU 2012‐2013). Dr. Bordelon has special interests in innova ve techniques involving orthopedics, neurosurgery, wound healing, reconstruc on surgical techniques, minimally invasive fracture management (MIPO), and other minimally invasive surgical techniques. He has authored book chapters and scien fic ar cles as well. Dr. Bordelon has presented lectures and laboratories at many local, state, regional, and na onal mee ngs. He is also is ac ve member in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, American Veterinary Medical Associa on, Veterinary Orthopedic Society, Veterinary Wound Management Society (past‐President), the Veterinary Emergency and Cri cal Care Society, as well as a variety other socie es and organiza ons. Dr. Bordelon is extremely thankful to share his wonderful life with his amazing wife Pia Bordelon (a registered veterinary technician). Together they love spending me with their son and daughter Peter and Gwyneth. They also have a black lab, Gracie, a terrier mix Olive, and a cat, Oscar. In his free me, Dr. Bordelon enjoys spending me with his family and friends, traveling, outdoor ac vi es. He also loves following Louisiana collegiate baseball teams as well as Louisiana football at all levels. Renee Carter, DVM Dr. Renee Carter is a 2000 graduate of the LSU‐SVM. A er comple ng a rota ng internship at LSU, she completed a four‐year residency in Compara ve Ophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin‐
Madison. Following comple on of her residency, Dr. Carter achieved board cer fica on as a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology. She returned to her home state of Louisiana as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at LSU from 2006‐2012. Following a successful career in private referral prac ce, Dr. Carter is now an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at LSU and ac vely involved with ophthalmology clinical service and teaching. Hanna B. Green, DVM, CVA Dr. Green is a Baton Rouge na ve who graduated from the LSU SVM in 2015. She obtained her CVA (cer fied veterinary acupuncturist) cer fica on from The Chi Ins tute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine in 2015, and has since pursued advanced training in specialized acupuncture techniques as well as some herbal and food therapy training. She currently prac ces integra ve medicine at Baton Rouge Veterinary Specialists as well as Sherwood South Animal Hospital. She is married to her husband and fellow veterinarian Dr. Brent D. Green with their two dogs and one cat. Ronald Koh, DVM Dr. Ronald Koh is an assistant professor at the Integra ve Medicine & Rehabilita on Department at LSU Veterinary School. He received his veterinary degree in Taiwan and completed a specialty internship and Master’s program at University of Florida. He is cer fied in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, food therapy, and rehabilita on. He is a candidate for the diplomate of American College of Sport Medicine and Rehabilita on. His clinical interests include using Chinese and integra ve medicine and rehabilita on for pain management, neurological disorders, geriatric condi ons, and hospice care. Dena Lodato, DVM, MS, DACVS Dena is originally from New Jersey but moved to Mississippi to a end vet school at MSU. Upon comple on in 2008, she pursued a rota ng internship at LSU. A er LSU, Dena completed a surgical internship at the Louisiana Veterinary Referral Center followed by a surgical residency at MSU. Since her residency, she has worked in NJ and MS, and joined South Paws Veterinary Specialists in Mandeville, LA in November 2015. Dr. Jayme Looper A na ve of Louisiana, Jayme Looper, DVM, DACVR (RO), received her Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M and her DVM from LSU in 1997. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Florida, then spent several years in general prac ce in Denver, CO prior to her residency in radia on oncology. She completed her residency at North Carolina State University and was board cer fied in 2004. She was in private specialty prac ce in the Chicago area from 2004‐2016. She returned home in 2016 and is happy to be back at LSU as an Associate Professor in Oncology. John Mauterer, DVM, Dipl. ACVS is a na ve of the City of New Orleans. He is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine 1987. In 1992, he completed his Residency in Small Animal Surgery at The Ohio State University. Upon comple on Dr. Mauterer achieved Board Cer fica on from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He remained on faculty at The OSU for 2 years before going into private prac ce in Columbus Ohio. In 1998, he and his wife Deb founded the Louisiana Veterinary Referral Center, where they worked un l 2010. From 2010 to 2012 Dr. Mauterer worked part‐ me as faculty at The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, while also establishing his traveling surgery service: Mobile Veterinary Surgical Services Inc. Dr. John and Deb established the surgical services at The Baton Rouge Veterinary Specialists, where they are today. He lectures at na onal mee ngs and has wri en numerous ar cles and book chapters. He was co‐inventor and patent holder of the non‐endoscopic technique for gastrostomy tube placement. They now travel to Asia and Africa providing aid to areas in great need of veterinary services, as well as, serving regularly at the New Orleans Dream Center, providing veterinary services for the homeless and those in poverty. Dr. Mauterer serves on the Board of Advisors for Chris an Veterinary Mission ‐ USA. Also, he received the 2012 Dean Evere Besch, Dis nguished Service Award from the LVMA and the 2012 Southwest Veterinary Symposium's Visionary Award for his professional, educa onal, and community service. Larry McCaskill, DVM Dr. Larry McCaskill graduated from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine May, 1981. His formal training in veterinary acupuncture and Tradi onal Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) began July, 2008 at Chi Ins tute of Tradi onal Chinese Medicine, Reddick, FL. Following comple on of this training course, he also completed an Interna onal Acupuncture Course with Professor Song Dalu, Nanjing China. He became a Cer fied Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) in March 2009. He is also a Cer fied Veterinary Chinese Herbalist (CVCH). He was the first veterinarian to open a veterinary acupuncture and Integra ve medicine prac ce in the Baton Rouge. He is a member of the Interna onal Chi Ins tute Instructor staff for China. He enjoys mentoring, teaching and speaking interna onally. Sandra Merchant, DVM Dr. Sandra Merchant is a veterinary dermatologist and a professor at LSU in the department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. She joined the faculty in July 1988. She received her BS from Florida State University in 1979 and her DVM from the University of Florida in 1984. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. Pamela S Mitchell, MS, DVM Na ve to New Orleans, over twenty years of experience as a veterinarian. Graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1992, a er achieving a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science. Experienced in companion animal clinical prac ce in general and emergency/cri cal care prac ces in South East LA. Experienced veterinary educator in academics, at LSU SVM, and animal health industry. Provides Con nuing Educa on on Communica on Skills and medical topics to veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Passionately devoted pa ent advocate, devoted to strengthening and preserving human animal bond. Ac ve in local, state and na onal organized veterinary medicine. Proud pet parent to two Standard Poodles, "Lafi e" and "Claiborne" Mo o for pet parents is "If you are concerned, I am concerned" Dr. Meredith Mouney, DVM, MS, DACVO Dr. Meredith Mouney grew up on the lakefront in New Orleans and a ended the Academy of the Sacred Heart class of 2002. She competed on the NCAA equestrian team at the University of Georgia where she a ended college. She received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from Louisiana State University in 2009 and went on to a small animal medicine and surgery rota ng internship at the University of Georgia from 2009‐2010. She completed a residency in veterinary ophthalmology and received a master’s degree at Purdue University from 2010‐2013. During her training, Dr. Mouney authored mul ple ar cles pertaining to veterinary ophthalmology. She became a board cer fied veterinary ophthalmologist in 2013 and is a current member of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. Dr. Mouney rides hunter jumpers and loves her horse Owen, her two French bulldogs Ellenore and Pierre and her Labrador Mozelle. Dr. Mouney currently
works at Metairie Veterinary Ophthalmology Specialists. Kathleen B. Mullins, DVM, MS, DACVS‐SA Kathleen graduated from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. She completed a small animal internship at the Atlan c Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada. A residency in small animal surgery at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine was completed in 2010. She joined a private referral and emergency hospital in Alabama, during which me she achieved Board Cer fica on from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. In 2014, she and her husband, Jason, moved to his hometown in Louisiana to take over the family farm. Dr. Mullins established Acadiana Veterinary Surgery as a mobile surgical service to provide the veterinarians and pet owners of Acadiana and surrounding areas with the exper se of a surgical specialist in the comfort of their local clinic. Surgical procedures include a full array of orthopedic, so ssue, neurologic, and oncologic specialized procedures.
Nicholas Parente, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM) Dr. Nicholas Parente is an a ending internist at MedVet Medical & Cancer Center for Pets in New Orleans. Dr. Parente received his Bachelor of Science degree from Long Island University at Southampton College and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a Rota ng Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at The Ohio State University followed by a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at Michigan State University. Dr. Parente was in private prac ce in New York for 5 years un l he joined MedVet in July of 2016. Dr. Parente’s clinical interests are quite varied, as is necessary of an internist in private prac ce, and enjoys sor ng through the diagnos c dilemmas that each pa ent provides. Carlos Pinto, DVM, Ph.D Dr. Pinto is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenology. He earned his veterinary degree in 1986 in Brazil, and completed a PhD (2001) and residency training in theriogenology at Louisiana State University. Previously serving on the faculty of the Ohio State University and North Carolina State University, Dr. Pinto has been on the faculty at LSU since 2013. Dr. Pinto’s clinical interests are in compara ve theriogenology and assisted reproduc on in equine, bovine and canine species. Robby Porter, DVM Robert J Porter, CCRP was one of the first people in the world to obtain his Cer fica on in Canine Rehabilita on from the University of Tennessee. He has over 16 years of experience helping to rehabilitate small animals recovering from surgery and injury as well as facilita ng condi oning programs for canine athletes. Robby spends most of his me in clinic at South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists but also
travels o en to teach his force free exercise program to veterinary professionals and canine performance trainers. Nathalie Rademacher, DVM A faculty member at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine since 2007, Dr. Rademacher is an Associate Professor of Veterinary Radiology. She is board cer fied by both the American College of Veterinary Radiology (2010) and the European College of Veterinary Diagnos c Imaging (2007). Jamie Schorling, DVM Dr. Jamie Schorling earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2003 from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Louisiana State
University, where she also received her Bachelor of Science in Wildlife

and Fisheries. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center of Boston, MA. Her combined Ophthalmology Residency and Masters of Science programs were completed at the Virginia‐Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. During her residency, Dr. Schorling gained extensive experience examining, trea ng, and performing surgeries on dogs, cats, horses, and various exo c species. She also completed several research projects involving instruments to test intraocular pressure in dogs and ophthalmic examina ons in owls, small ruminants, and tortoises. Dr. Schorling has been a board cer fied member of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists since 2007. Dr. Schorling enjoys examining and trea ng all species, including wildlife and exo c pets. She feels that the most rewarding aspects of veterinary ophthalmology include being able to perform procedures to restore comfort and vision to animals when they are injured or visually impaired. In addi on to extraocular, corneal, glaucoma, and cataract surgeries, Dr. Schorling is dedicated to working with clients to establish medical management plans for pa ents with chronic ocular diseases. She gives back to the community by par cipa ng in con nuing educa on, teaching, and volunteer work. When she is not working, Dr. Schorling enjoys various outdoor ac vi es, including camping, hiking, horseback riding, and swimming. Jenny Sones , DVM A 2008 graduate of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Sones is a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenology and an Assistant Professor at her alma mater. She earned a PhD in Molecular & Integra ve Physiology at Cornell University in 2014 where she also completed residency training in 2015. Diane Stacy, DVM Diane Stacy is the Assistant State Veterinarian at the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry (LDAF) in the Veterinary Health Division. Dr. Stacy received her undergraduate degree from LSU and her DVM from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. Dr. Stacy owned two prac ces and worked as a mixed animal prac oner in Greenwell Springs and Baton Rouge for 22 years. She joined LDAF in 2004 in a dual appointment as Area Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO) and State Homeland Security Program Coordinator and was appointed Assistant State Veterinarian in 2010. She has been trained at Plum Island Animal Disease Laboratory as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnos cian (FADD) and currently coordinates State/Federal livestock disease surveillance programs in Louisiana. Diane has been married to Mike Stacy, DVM for 27 years and they have two adult children, Jeffrey and Patricia. Mike Strain, DVM, Commissioner, La. Dept. of Agriculture & Forestry Commissioner, Mike Strain took the oath of office for his second four‐year term as Louisiana's Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry on January 9, 2012. A na ve of Covington, Dr. Strain earned a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from LSU in 1983. In 1999, he was elected to the first of two terms as State Representa ve, where he served on the Agriculture Commi ee and chaired the Legisla ve Rural Caucus. He was twice named Legislator of the Year by the St. Tammany Parish Alliance for Good Government. In 2003, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine presented Strain its Dis nguished Alumni Award. Strain was awarded the Future Farmers of America’s highest na onal award, the Honorary American Degree, in August 2009, and he was inducted into the LSU Alumni Associa on Hall of Dis nc on in May 2010. Strain was named Conserva onist of the Year in January 2012. In January 2013, he was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Associa on. He recently completed terms as president of SUSTA (the Southern United States Trade Associa on) and SASDA (the Southern Associa on of State Departments of Agriculture), and is the second vice president of NASDA (Na onal Associa on of
State Departments of Agriculture). He is also the chair of the NASDA Animal and Plant Industries Commi ee and he holds a commission from the U. S. Food and Drug Administra on. Strain is married to Dr. Susan Searcy Strain of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and they have two adult children. from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1995 a er serving in the US Navy. Robbie began his career in the animal health industry with IDEXX Laboratories. A er a number of years as an in‐clinic laboratory representa ve and earning the pres gious President’s Club Award, Robbie was then promoted to area instrument manager. He currently lives in South Louisiana with his wife and children. Tom Tully, DVM Dr. Thomas N. Tully, Jr. is a Professor of Zoological Medicine in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department at LSU and serves as Service Chief of the Zoological Medicine Service. A 1986 graduate of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Tully has wri en, edited, and served as co‐editor and co‐author of numerous books and book chapters in veterinary medicine ‐‐ most recently published in January 2016, Current Therapy in Exo c Pet Prac ce, (Mitchell and Tully). He is CoEditor‐In‐Chief of the Journal of Exo c Pet Medicine.
Gabe Van Brunt, DVM, DACVO Gabe is a Louisiana na ve and grew up in his hometown of Mandeville, Louisiana. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Following internship, he completed an ACVO approved residency program at the Animal Ophthalmology Clinic in Dallas, Texas. A er comple on of the third year of residency, he took the ACVO Board cer fica on exam and was awarded diplomate status by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. A er working as an associate in Dallas, Dr. Van Brunt followed his dream of moving back home to Louisiana and establishing his Ophthalmology Referral Center, Southern Veterinary Eye Care, in Mandeville, Louisiana. Dr. Van Brunt’s special interests are micro‐incision cataract surgery, corneal repair and reconstruc on, and Ahmed Valve implanta on for treatment of glaucoma.
Jorge L. Vila DVM, MS, DAVIM Jorge L. Vila obtained his DVM from Louisiana State University in 2007. Following gradua on, he completed a small animal rota ng internship at Michigan State University in 2008 and prac ced as an emergency clinician for a specialty hospital in Richmond Virginia un l 2010. A er returning to Louisiana, he obtained a Masters of Science degree in 2012 and completed a cardiology residency in 2015, both at Louisi‐ana State University. He joined MedVet in 2015 where he serves as the Cardiologist for both MedVet New Orleans and MedVet Mande‐ville. He has a special interest in the evalua on and treatment of arrhythmias. He lives in Covington with his wife, daughter and their pets. Michelle Woodward, DVM Dr. Michelle Woodward received her veterinary degree from Uni‐versity of Tennessee in 2009. She completed an internship in equine surgery and medicine in 2010 and a dermatology residency in 2014, both at Louisiana State University. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. Dr. Woodward worked in private prac ce before returning to LSU as an Assistant Professor in 2016. She has a strong interest in small animal allergic disease and equine dermatology.
