Books

By Syed Afsar Sajid

Two recent publications – a literary magazine and a medical research journal, both published from Faisalabad, form the subject of this review.NiqatQasim Yaqub is a talented young writer and intellectual. His innovative genius is truly reflected in his brainchild Niqat – a voluminous literary

periodical that he publishes bi-annually from Faisalabad, with a marked consistency. Everyone knows that a venture of this sort is not a ‘profitable’ proposition in the present state of affairs when science and technology have had the better of men across the globe and the space for creative literature, and succinctly the fine arts, is narrowing down in the prevalent scheme of things. The Herculean efforts of Qasim Yaqub and many others of his ilk (a la Nasim Durrani, (late) Sehba Akhtar, Nahid Qasmi, (late) Azhar Javaid, Ata-ul-Haq Qasmi, Khalid Ahmad, Nasir Ahmad Nasir, Azra Asghar/Sheba Tiraz, Shahid Shaidai, Auj Kamal, Dr. Shaid Hassan Rizvi, Ali Muhammad Farshi, and Allama Zia Hussain Zia etc.) in the publication of different literary periodicals and magazines have in no small measure sustained the tradition in the face of enormous difficulties. The issue in hand is purported to be a ‘Nazm Number’ with exhaustive briefs on the concept, structure, scope and future of Urdu nazm along with detailed case studies in the genre in relation to poets like Miraji, Ahmed Nadim Qasmi, Wazir Agha, Akhtar Hussain Jafry, Aftab Iqbal Shamim, Noon Meem Rashid, Akhtarul Eiman, Zahid Dar, Mustafa Zaidi, Muhammad Salim-ur-Rahman and Satyapal Anand. Major contributors on these themes are Dr. Shamim Hanafi, Dr. Atiqullah, Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar, Dr. Tariq Hashmi, Dr. Iftikhar Beg, Ehtisham Ali, Imran Azfar, Tanvir Saghar, Abuzar Hashmi, Muhammad Ubaidullah Sukhera, Ali Danish, Khurram Aleem, Safeer Haider, Pervez Anjum, Dr. Bilal Sohail, Dr. Yasmin Sultan, Salim Sohail, and Sadaf Mirza. The magazine includes creative specimens – in the genre of nazm – of Satyapal Anand, Sarmad Sehbai, Ali Muhammad Farshi, Rafiq Sandheelvi, Anwaar Fitrat, Mehmood Sana, Shaheen Abbas, Najeeha Arif, Awal Sumro, Abida Taqi, Ali Akbar Natiq, Shahid Ashraf, Aamir Abdullah, Arshad Naeem, Zahid Imroz, and Qasim Yaqub besides a purist’s selection of the modern Urdu nazm spanning the last fifty years, from the work of Miraji, Noon Meem Rashid, Majeed Amjad, Akhtarul Eiman, Wazir Agha, Mukhtar Siddiqui, Anis Nagi, Muhammad Salim-ur-Rahman, Zia Jalandhari, Gilani Kamran, Akhtar Hussain Jafry, Aftab

Such publications deserve to be patronized by authorities in the

higher education sector like colleges and universities for the benefit of the scholars and students in the relevant discipline. Madina Medical NewsThe University of Faisalabad has lately emerged as an accomplished seat of higher learning in the private sector, in Central Punjab. The short brief on Madina Teaching Hospital sheds light on its origin and development. Launched by the well known philanthropist Haji Muhammad Saleem in 1990 and later taken up by his eminent son Mian Muhammad Hanif, it has speedily grown into a full-fledged 410-bed teaching hospital with an enviable array of departments like opthalmology (cornea grafting being its speciality), medicine, gynaecology, ENT, surgery, urology, paediatrics, radiology, orthopaedic, dermatology, dental health, physiotherapy, and pathology – functioning round-the-clock, free-of-charge on purely philanthropic basis. The articles in the journal provide sound but authentic knowledge on the related subjects and are beneficial to both the lay as well as the initiated reader. Marginal notes on medical/non-medical topics like cholesterol level, weight loss, vitamin D deficiency in cirrhosis, coffee versus the endometrial cancer, the implications of food fried in olive or sunflower oil, new standard for vitamin D testing to ensure accurate test results, and an article on Islami Wazaif tend to add to the value of the journal as a compendium of variegated knowledge. It is hoped that the quality of the publication will further appreciate in the time to come in keeping with the on-going quantitative and qualitative upward trends in the aforesaid two health institutions.

Indo-PakLove AffairBy Rubia Moghees

Between the 12th and 15th April, hall number 18 of the Pragati Maidan became host to what could never have been imagined before. ‘Lifestyle Pakistan’

was welcomed whole heartedly by the government, media and public of India. Over a hundred top Pakistani brands and approximately 650 delegates participated in this high profile event. The historic event was the result of the continual struggle between the two countries aiming to improve trade ties. A ‘Made in India’ exhibit of about 125 companies was brought by the Indian Trade and Commerce minister Mr Anand Sharma to Pakistan in February which paved the way for the biggest Pakistani commercial exhibition on Indian soil. Mr Tariq Puri, the chief executive of TDAP said, ‘This is the first time we have the who’s who of Pakistan under one roof.’ Referring to brands like Chen One, Gul Ahmed, Bareeze, Kayseria, Nishat, Mausamary and the list goes on. Amongst designers participating were Sahar Atif of Saai, Faiza Sami, Honey Waqar and Asim Jofa. The four day exhibit saw a tremendous turnout of Indian customers all trying to grab their share of something Pakistani for either their wardrobes or homes. The event also included a glamorous evening of runway shows studded with Delhi elite and dignitaries of both the countries. Brands like Chen One styled by Sahar Atif, Gul Ahmed, Kayseria, Rang Ja, Saai, Honey Waqar, Faiza Sami and many more swept the audience off its feet with collections of international caliber. Particularly noticeable was Chen One’s collection ‘Pareesa’ styled by Sahar Atif which thrilled the audience with Bollywood’s new wonder boy Ali Zafar with a ‘dhol’ around his next making Delhi dance to the beat of ‘Madhubala’. ‘The corridor of friendship and love will pave the way for true harmony and trade to prosper between our nations,’ said an enthusiastic Sahar

Atif at the end of the event. Equally excited was Honey Waqar: ‘This time we were just able to display our creations, however there were a lot of inquiries at the end of the show. The tremendous exposure benefited both sides and we are also planning to form a company on the similar lines of Bridal Asia where there will be an exchange of designers.’ An exuberant Honey Waqar also disclosed that there is a project in pipeline in which she aims to collaborate with a big textile firm to produce designer lawn that will be exported to India. Mian Kashif Ashfaq CEO of Chen One said, ‘Direct trade with India is a more attractive proposition as opposed to EU or alternate countries as it is cost effective. A musical evening with Sanam Marvi and Ali Zafar saw Delhites dance along joyfully.
