Principal’s Postpage 2
Greetings, Families!
I hope everyone is planning to attend Lourdes Starry Night this Saturday, March 7th. I just got a close look at all of the fabulous art projects that each class made. WOW! It makes me want to redecorate my house with all of those colorful, unique themes! Thank you to Donica Mokosak for her hard work at getting this organized. And of course, a BIG thanks goes out to Margaret Miller who has been eating, sleeping, and breathing Lourdes Starry Night for months. Where would we be without all of the fabulous parents at Lourdes??
Registration season is upon us here at Lourdes! The office staff is busily preparing registration packets and finalizing forms. A new form that you will see is the Home Language Survey. The state requires that every school has this completed form on file for every student at Lourdes. So if you have more than one child you will be filling out one for each of them. Luckily, this only has to be done one time, not every year. Once we have it on file, it can remain in the child’s folder until they leave Lourdes.
Do you know any families looking for a preschool for next year? We have a few slots still available in our 3-day three-year old preschool with Mrs. Trannel for next year. We also have two slots in our 4-year old PM class for next year. Spread the word that the #1 preschool in the Quad Cities has a limited number of openings left for fall!
Don’t forget that the Faith Formation Board meets on the second Thursday of every month. Contact Mike Vonderhaar, President, or go to http://www.lourdescatholic.org/Page/Faith_Formation_Board.aspx?nt=20 for more information about meetings.
The Kindness in Christ program is really gaining momentum at Lourdes. It was featured in a recent issue of the Catholic Messenger, and I know that it is a topic discussed often in our K-8 religion classes. Don’t forget to reinforce these actions at home. Children love to talk about the good things they are doing.
Mrs. Jane Volden, 1st grade LCS teacher and creator of the Voweletics™ program, saw a third place victory in the recent Dream Big competition! Way to go, Mrs. Volden! We are so blessed to have you here at Lourdes! Thank you to all of the parents and supporters who diligently voted online each day for Voweletics™. We appreciate your support. In fact, word is spreading about the program’s success – a group of teachers from Illinois plans to come and observe some students implementing Voweletics™ at Lourdes this month! The Catholic Messenger also included a full length story about the program. Spread the word about the top-notch education that your child is getting at Lourdes!
A Lourdes parent shared with me the other day that their child think that he has the nicest teacher in the world – aren’t we so blessed to have such great teachers here, who care about our kids? Thank you for choosing Lourdes – we know it is a sacrifice to choose to pay tuition instead of utilize our excellent public school system, but well worth it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
May God Bless You,
Ms. Jennifer Alongi, Principal

Sticking with the FFB committee theme I’ve been on for the past couple of months, I’ll be reviewing the activities of the Buildings and Grounds Committee this month. The Buildings and Grounds Committee is responsible for both short and long term maintenance of the entire physical property for both the church and school. The committee has 6 to 8 members and meets at least monthly. The committee members work with the maintenance staff to identify and prioritize maintenance issues that need to be addressed and for monitoring the maintenance budgets for both the school and parish. The cost of the project determines the number of bids that are obtained and the approval level required. If a project exceeds $5,000 a minimum of three bids must be obtained and both the Pastor and the Finance Council must approve the project and vendor. If the project is under $5,000 require the Pastor’s approval.
Over the summer the committee worked on the renovations and upgrades to the Lourdes Little Lancer House. This school year the committee has been working on repairing the pews in the church including replacing the vinyl. Quotes for the vinyl have been obtained and the committee is working to secure funds to proceed. It worked with the Grant Writing Committee to obtain a grant for the Columbine Locks for the school and then secured the vendor to perform the installations. Other projects that are in the works or on the current project list include updating some of the exterior and interior lighting, pruning the giving tree, and removing cobwebs from the eaves and gutters.
If any concerns are identified Chris Harmson, the maintenance supervisor, should be contacted. She will then work with the Buildings and Grounds Committee to review the concern and determine a priority.
Happy Spring to all of you!
This is an important time of year for the Home & School Association – election of officers for the Home & School Association Board will be coming soon. The Home & School Association plays an important role for the school through coordination of volunteers for many school and extracurricular activities, fundraising, and teacher/staff support. We need people like you to help it and our school continue to flourish. Please watch for two forms that will be coming out soon. The first is the Home & School Board nomination form which allows you to nominate yourself or another parent/guardian for a position on the board. The Second is the Service Committee Volunteer Form which allows you to sign up to chair or serve as a committee member for a variety of activities/events. Getting involved is a perfect way to meet other families and develop life-long friendships while at the same time supporting your child/children. I hope you will give it some thought because this school needs you!
Thanks to everyone that attended Bingo Night, it was a huge success! Thanks to everyone that volunteered for the event, including the Middle School students. The event made over $700 for the 7th and 8th graders Washington DC trip.
Keep your eyes open for the April newsletter to give all the details on the Starry Night Fundraiser! As always, please remember to purchase SCRIP for your weekly needs. It provides funding for many programs that benefit our children.
