Love is…

Page 2: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

“Tell me why the stars do shine, Tell me why the ivy twines, Tell me what makes skies so blue, And I'll tell you why I love you.

Nuclear fusion makes stars to shine, Tropisms make the ivy twine, Raleigh scattering make skies so blue, Testicular hormones are why I love you. ”

― Isaac Asimov

Today we are concentrating on romantic love

Anyway, today is St. Valentine’s Day

Page 5: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

What is love?

Or…

Something magical…

Page 6: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

Love as it is seen by neuroscientists

Page 7: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

Some words to learnNeuron – a cell of nervous system.

Neurons contact each other by means of special molecules – mediators.

Neuron №1 Neuron №2

Mediator

Mediators can be different

End each mediator has its special function:

Everything which we do or feel is because of mediators: sleep, move, feel, think, LOVE

Page 8: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

Love is real: evidence 1Animals do feel love (at least some of them).

For example elephants.

Elephants are in love with each other for 5 days

Page 9: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

And another examples:

Some species of rodents (грызуны) can feel love too.

At least for 30 seconds.

Page 10: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

And definitely human beings can love.

Page 11: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

Evidence 2Our brain and whole organism are changingwhen we feel love

Page 12: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

The first symptom of love is…

“special meaning”Not only the sweetheart…

…but everything connected with him (her) seems absolutely unique!

• That is because of dopamine

Page 13: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

When we fall in love, we can:

walk all night long…without any sleep

That because of dopamine

too!

Page 14: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

We feel euphoric!

That because of dopamine again!Dopamine is a really amazing mediator!

Page 15: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

We think about him (or her) every minute, every second of every day…

• That is because of serotonin:

Page 16: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

Another changes:

The heart pounding

The sweaty palm syndrome

That’s probably high norepinephrine in the brain

Page 17: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

So the mediators of love are:

• Dopamine -

• Serotonine

• Norepinephrine

thinking about sweetheart

special meaning

everything else

Is Eternal Love possible?

Fortunately, from scientific point of view, it is =)At least for someone.

Page 19: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

Long-term romantic love?Yes And not at all

But commonly, yes ;)

Romantic love as intensive as in the beginning of relationship is inachievable =(

But romantic feelings… yes, they are possible!

Page 20: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

What do we have to do to keep love?

Science says the only thing we need is dopamine

Page 21: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

?

Where can we get it?

Pharmacy?

Definitely, not!

Can I have a piece of

dopamine?

Does this recommendation help you?

Page 22: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

• Just take up something new together

It’s much simpler!

It's a piece of cake ))))))))))

Page 23: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

And your dopamine level will grow!

The happy end of our dream ))))

Page 24: Love by Helen Fisher, a presentation for February 14

So what is love?As scientists we can tell that love is definitely something magical

Some magical feelings which have a particular physiological basis
