Why would anyone sacrifice resources or anything of such value, that they need in order to live more comfortably, for an unknown outcome or no apparent gain. Why did she feel compelled to do it? It struck me that we parents do something similar day in and day out. Perhaps it doesn’t seem so extreme, but the idea is there. As any fellow parent will attest, our children can suck the very life out of us, yet we always manage to give them more. For example, Baby keeps us up at night, sometimes all night, only to wake us up a few hours later to start a whole new day cycle over again. Exhausted and spent, needing dearly to sleep in, we relent when Baby cries and race to meet Baby’s needs. Daily workouts chasing Toddler around, making sure she doesn’t try to climb up the bookshelf or run out into the street, are challenging and completely draining, but she asks for one more story at bedtime, twice, and we can’t help but comply. Collegian needs more money for tuition than we have budgeted. So much for dinners out (forever) and fixing that cracked, dilapidated shower stall. Well, so just like our widow, we manage to give away to our kids our treasure, i.e., the time, energy and resources that we never seem to have in surplus, that we need to take care of ourselves and keep us sane. We never know if what we give will provide any return, but we give and give anyway, time and again, because we love. Our love for our children is what fuels us to give, then give more, and more again, never expecting much in return (except perhaps to be loved back). Could it be love that our widow has for her God that obliges her give all she has? Do we love our God as heartily, so that we are comfortable doing the same, sharing with God’s people all we have to offer? Not sure? Me either, but let’s try today, pray a little harder, sing a little louder, give a little more of ourselves to those around us (inside and outside the church) more than we planned. We may learn to understand that widow yet. Lillian Kwiatkowski Love, by Widow

The poor widow in today’s Gospel has always intrigued me. That someone, whose circumstances were so dire, just handed over all she had seemed a bit incredulous. Didn’t she need that money to eat? Didn’t she need it to take care of herself, to survive? Why would anyone sacrifice resources or anything of such value, that they need in order to live more comfortably, for an unknown outcome or no apparent gain. Why did she feel compelled to do it?

It struck me that we parents do something similar day in and day out. Perhaps it doesn’t seem so extreme, but the idea is there. MINISTRY NEWS

Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place on Sunday, November 15, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO.

Community Ministry HELP Needed Community Ministry is looking for help picking up donations. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we pick up donations from the Target store on the El Camino and Scott. We are searching for an individual or individuals who would be comfortable driving our Community Ministry Van and able to pick up donations between 12:30-1:00 p.m. We are also looking for someone who can travel to the Second Harvest Food Bank on Thursday mornings about 10:00 a.m. to help pick up food. Contact Joe at 408-296-1193 ext. 109 or [email protected] if you are interested.

Stuffed Animals and Books for Christmas Although Christmas is still a few months away in the Community Ministry world we are already in the planning stages. One way that parishioners can help is donating Stuffed Animals and Books that we give away to the children of the families we serve. They can be either new or used and be dropped off at the Parish Office any time between now and our Christmas distribution, December 19-20.

Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at 408-296-1193 extension 109 or [email protected]

Food Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of November, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chile, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office.

Community Ministry

Projection System Project As suggested by some parishioners in last summer's music survey, we have

looked into a projection system for the church. Such a system will display

lyrics to songs, prayers, etc. on large screens so we can respond and

participate better during Mass. We believe that adding this system can greatly improve the community's engagement in our liturgies and

enhance the assembly's worshiping experience. We hope and plan to

install a system soon. The cost for the project is estimated to be $35,000. We would like to ask kindly for donations

specific to this effort to cover the costs. If you are interested in contributing or if you have any questions, please contact

Lillian, Joe Bauer or Fr. Chris. Thank you so much for helping to fund

this endeavor!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In 1974, a revised ritual of penance was given to the Church, and at forty years distance, we still are discovering its treasures and tentative about some of its provisions. The rite reaches deep into our tradition for an early insight: when we turn to God, we are restored to life in the Church.

There are three different forms of penance. The familiar individual confession is preserved, but with tremendous enrichment. It is less rushed, anchored by a reading from scripture, and the confession of sins is seen as an opportunity to proclaim faith in God’s power to save. In a sense, what is “confessed” is the penitent’s faith in God’s gift of forgiveness. The priest suggests a penance that may be directly con-nected to the virtue that the person seeks as a means of overcoming the fault. There are for-mulas for contrition suggested, but the penitent might even express sorrow for sin and desire for mercy in his or her own words. The prayer of absolution grounds the event in the life and ministry of the Church. Harking back to the joyful dance of bishops leading penitents into the church, the rite now ends with a prayer of thanksgiving for God’s mercy, and may in-clude the gesture of laying on of hands. After forty years, we struggle to claim this rite forged of memory, tradition, and grace. History tells us to be patient; we do not always recognize a treasure at first. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
