“Fall bass classes in Santa Rosa” Enrollment will soon open for two new four-week

bass class series this fall in Santa Rosa. “Easy Bass: Bluegrass and Country” will cater to nov-

ices and occasional players who want to improve their technique and timing and learn more basic theory and essential bass runs while playing bluegrass and coun-try classics. (If you don’t have a bass, check with the instructor about a possible low-cost rental.)

“Bass Grooves for the Bandstand” is for intermedi-ate players who already play some walking bass and want to expand their knowledge of music styles, such as swing, honky-tonk, blues, shuffles, calypso, bossa nova, samba, waltzes, 6/8 pop, and more.

“Bassists thrive on versatility,” says instructor Chuck Ervin, “so the Bass Grooves class will be like a survival guide for when you’re at a party gig or a jam and sud-denly find yourself wading into murky musical waters.”

The 90-minute classes are planned for Sunday after-noons in October at a private residence in Oakmont Village in Santa Rosa.

Both classes are open to all bass instruments: upright, guitar bass, electric bass, and ukulele bass.

Contact the instructor with any inquiries at [email protected] or (510) 261-7754.

Chuck Ervin performs with numerous local and acclaimed musicians. To mention a few, Mike Stadler & Mary Gibbons, guitarist Chris Grampp, Bobby Black, Joe Craven, Ed Johnson, Jinx Jones, Keith Little, Tony Marcus and Carol McComb.

How much do you know about the SONOMA COUNTY FOLK SOCIETY?

How long has our organization been around? Who were its founding members? What is the purpose of the folk society, according to our Articles of Incorpo-ration? In February of 1976, we became a legal non-profit corporation, through the determination of several local folk musicians and folk music support-ers, including the club’s first Directors—Harriet Lewis, Patricia Davis, Ron Silverman, Robert Linde and KATE WOLF! Originally named Santa Rosa Folk Festival Association, the name was changed to Sonoma County Folk Society in 1982. At this time, Katy Jako was Presi-dent, and Sally Ashcraft was Secretary.

Our 1976 founding papers pronounce that our “specific and primary purpose is to

create, establish, and provide an independent non-profit educational and charitable resource to revive and promote a knowledge of, an awareness of, an enjoyment of, and the performance of the traditional and contem-porary folk music of the people of the U.S.A. as a means of enriching and increasing a sense of American History as found in the sung and written music of past genera-
