The Apostles and other believers were being martyred. They believed that Jesus was going to come back soon to bring about the Kingdom of God, but where was He? It was natural to ask, “Does it still make sense to believe? Is Jesus the true Messiah? Where do we see Jesus today? How should we live if we really believe Jesus is the Christ?” John assures the church of His day and of ours that it still makes to believe… hang in there. Where do we see Jesus? How are we to live?... one word… LOVE!!! This exhortation is considered the heart of Jesus’ teaching. Love for others is grounded in God’s love for Jesus and Jesus’ love for us. It is a profound truth that we all too often take for granted. John’s gospel offers a glimpse of God’s love through Jesus. He embraced all the people He met, those who accepted Him and those who did not. His love was unselfish and reached out to even those who were difficult to love. His was a self-emptying love. He cared more for others than Himself. He forgot about His own needs, comfort, pain, etc. and put the needs of others first. We who believe… we who accept Jesus as the center of our lives… are to love one another as completely and universally as Jesus loves us. It’s not easy… but do we strive to do the best we can? Or do we say it is impossible and live like everyone else… focused on our own needs and desires? Yes this self-emptying, universal love may be difficult but we see examples of it everyday: spouses treating each other with understanding and tenderness; loving parents put the need of their children above their own; adult children care for aging parents; in hospitals, in classrooms in our first responders… true love is found! The Spirit of God, given to us, enables us to love as Jesus loved us. Reflect this week on where you find genuine self-emptying love in your life? Where are you being stretched to extend your love… to the displaced, frightened immigrant? To the obnoxious neighbor? To the person who hurt you or someone you care deeply for? Disciples of Jesus do not have an option or choice… we must love, because love is of God. Easter calls us to live out this love in a world burdened with conflict and strife. MAY 6, 2018SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

LOVE… LOVE… LOVE

John’s community was struggling to keep the faith some 60-70 years after the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus.

His

was a self-emptying love.

Or do we say it is impossible and live like everyone else… focused on our own needs and desires?Yes this self-emptying, universal love may be difficult but we see examples of it everyday: spouses treating each other with understanding and tenderness; loving parents put the need of their children above their own; adult children care for aging parents; in hospitals, in classrooms in our first responders… true love is found!

What does love have to do with it? Everything!!!

ADULT FAITH FORMATIONADULT FAITH FORMATION

ATTENTION, MEN OF ST. SUSANNA PARISH…

We are excited to announce “Welcome,” the updated version of “CRHP” (which is now owned by Matthew

Kelly). It’s run by parishioners for parishioners, and it’s re-energizing parishes across the country.

Most of the people you see every day feel like something is missing in their lives. Welcome is an incredible experience that helps them discover what that something is -- and what to do about it. If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you should be a part of the weekend. Don’t wait – spaces are filling up fast. The St. Susanna Welcome weekend retreat for men will be held Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th. Through fellowship, faith sharing, hospitality, music, individual and group activities, Mass, and more, participants have the opportunity to step back from the everyday to reflect on their lives and their spiritual journeys and build meaningful relationships with other men in the parish. Welcome is free to attend and all meals are provided. Contact Fraser McCurrach at [email protected] for more information, or by phone at (513) 515-7793.

ADULT FAITH FORMATIONREACH OUT: DISCIPLES IN ACTION

SPRING IS HERE!

Spring energizes us all and the most obvious clue of that is “spring cleaning.” Keep in mind the Garage Sale sponsored by the Women’s Association when you begin your cleaning. This year, the dates are June 22 and 23.

If you have possessions that have gone unused for over one year and they are cluttering up your closets, basement, and garage, save them for the Garage Sale. The Women’s Association can sell pretty much anything that is reusable – books, toys, clothing, jewelry, furniture, working appliances, tools, flatware, dishes, home décor, picture frames, sporting goods, etc. They’ve even sold a kitchen sink!

Set all your items aside to bring to the Meyer Center beginning June 16th. However, if storing them is not an option and you are not able or unwilling to hold until then, contact Christine Phelan at 513-492-7265 or [email protected] or Mary Ann Vossler at 513-257-3892 or [email protected].

The Garage Sale is more than just a fund raiser. It is a ministry to our community allowing individuals and families to stretch their shopping dollars by buying clothing, household appliances, and other necessary items at reasonable and affordable prices. Proceeds from the sale provide funds to purchase special items for the Parish and to assist its various ministries.

The Schuh Center would like to celebrate the Moms that visit the food pantry by providing them with a potted flowering plant for Mother’s Day. So… when planting your own flower beds, if you have any extra flowers, please consider sharing them with the Schuh Center.

Potted plants will be accepted through May 6th. They can be dropped off directly to the Schuh Center during normal operating hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00-11:00am. The plants can also be placed on the table by the Peace and Justice Kiosk in the Gathering Space of the Church.

GO CINCINNATI!Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 9:00am-1:00pm

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.

God’s Generous Love

Our painting by Aldo Carpi (1886-1973) shows the Virgin Mary bringing the Baby Jesus to

visit the poor. She doesn’t make distinctions. Mary understood that Jesus didn’t come just for the rich and powerful but for everyone.

Peter learns this lesson when speaking to Cornelius and his household. Until this time, the apostles were preaching to the Jewish people, but when Peter speaks to these Romans, the Holy Spirit comes upon them just as he had upon the Jews. They repent and believe. This for Peter was essential, because it showed that Jesus wanted to send his Spirit and teachings to everyone, not just the chosen race. God doesn’t show favoritism.

The same goes for us. It’s natural to want to love our

own: our family and those sharing our social status, political party, club, school, or parish. But our love has to spread to all peoples, especially those in the most moral, material, and spiritual need. God is love, and those who love show they come from God.

Another element of love is that it is free, wanting nothing in return. Recently, while sitting at an outdoor café, a woman walked up and gave me a small wrapped gift. “I like to give gifts to complete strangers, just to make their day,” she said. What a beautiful gesture.

We should also note that Cornelius accepted God’s love, was baptized, and

began following the Way. He and his family didn’t take that free love of God for granted. They responded to it in joyful obedience. God’s generous love asks for an equally generous response. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
