Facts of Birth DefectsO 1 and every 33 babies are born with

a birth defect. O 4,000 different known birth defects.O Leading cause of death in first year

for newborns. O Most birth defects are due to genetic

and environmental factors.

Down Syndrome• Baby is born with extra chromosome.• 6,000 babies each year are born with

Down Syndrome• Some common physical signs of Down

syndrome include:• A flat face with an upward slant to the

eye, a short neck, small ears, and a large tongue

• Tiny white spots on the iris (colored part) of the eye

• Small hands and feet• A single crease across the palm of the
