Worship With Us
Sundays

Sunday School
9:15 am
The month of December can be
a hectic time for many of us, especially
for those who go to church. On top of
what we do during the Christmas Sea-
son we also have Sunday worship,
Christmas Pageant, Cantata, Caroling,
and Christmas Candle Light Service.
I want to THANK EVERYONE
who helped prepare and lead the
events. December is a month when I barely have time to catch my breath, but I
am hoping to create a space for “Time Out” from all that exhausts us.
Instead of going 85 or 90 miles an hour (without getting any tickets), in
2014, I will drive the highway speed limits. In other words, I will drive slowly; I
will stop at the rest areas. I want to have a slow start before I jump into the rest
of the year of 2014. This is my wish, just a wish.
In 2014 I will have a physical check up with a
doctor. I will not eat “junk food” and I will exercise.
This is my wish, just a wish.
How do you feel about your New Year’s reso-
lution? Are they a lot like mine? Well, then we
should be wise enough to respond to what life hands
us. No matter how we feel about it, God’s plan for our
lives in 2014 is awesome. The Apostle John said in
his letter, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good
health and that all may go well with you, even as your
soul is getting along well.” (3 John 1:2)
Have a beautiful and awesome New Year. I look forward to seeing you
on Sunday all year-round in 2014. If you don’t show up on Sunday, I do really
miss you, I do really miss your smiles, laughter, and I do miss your love. It’s
always good to be in church on Sunday. See you all!
Grace and peace,
Moon-Hee Chung
Get out your favorite

the Sunday, Jan. 26
potluck luncheon
following 10:30 service.
We look forward to seeing
YOU there!
A note from Cindy Joy: Worshiping the Lord was proclaimed in this
year’s cantata. To be part of it - either conducting, singing, reading
scripture, playing a musical instrument and attending - was a spiritual
blessing.
The soup supper before the cantata was also a blessing. So many
people volunteered to make crock pots of soups (fifteen!), provide cheese, crackers, carrots, corn bread and a
variety of yummy desserts. Personally want to thank Jolene Stubby, Judy Stukey, Becky Reeves, Kathi Bahr,
Jan Wideman, Tawny Decker, Joyce Hopkins, Kathy Gales, Thyra Davis, Paula and Ron Bruce, Geneva
Bussard, Joan Murphy, Dixie Johnson, Judy Romary, Carie Collins, Deb Simmons, Jane Griffith, Karen
Kaufman, Bernice Sucec, Salli Stewart, Sharon Walrod, Dan and Linda Allen, LaVina Dalby, Diana Thomsen,
Karen Reeves, Dawn Freeman, Bob Culbertson, Lisa Garrett, Brian Burnett, Alice Chambers, Tina Decker,
Shylonda Wright, Verla Bartholomew, Kay Scott, Glenda jones and Charlotte Burrell for providing the food.
A BIG THA3K YOU to those who helped set up, serve and clean up after the cantata—Geneva
Bussard, Kay Scott, Stacy and Alice Buckridge, LaVina Dalby, Shelly Thorp, Sherry Fejfar, and Judy Romary.
Chris Hubbard provided the beautiful table decorations and set the candlelight mood prior to the cantata.
Thank you, Chris, for sharing your many talents.
I was overwhelmed by the monetary generosity shared by those of you who partook in the food and
fellowship of the soup supper. $425 was raised for the ESU A Cappella Choir.
God Bless all of you,
Cindy Joy

SHARIG GOD’S LOVE
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO GAVE CHRISTMAS AWAY!
Homebound Friends received 81 cards from BUMC. Thank you for sharing God’s love this Christmas .
190 Pairs of Undies and 159 Pairs of Socks were collected for God’s Storehouse. Last year we collected 172
pairs of underwear and 298 pairs of socks.
Twelve Families were given Christmas gifts and meals through BUMC’s participation in ECKAN’s Adopt-a-
Family program.
Nineteen BUMC College Students received BUMC Christmas notes and gifts in the mail to encourage them
for finals’ week. Thank you for Giving Christmas Away on college campuses. The Nurture Team organized this
project.
BUMC carolers serenaded residents at Life Care Center and at The Meadows following 10:30 service on Dec.
22.
Special Events included the children’s program, the cantata, and two Christmas Eve worship services. The
Christmas Eve offering will benefit the youth group’s 2014 mission trips.
This section is devoted to sharing examples of our congregation
acting on our mission of “Sharing God’s Love with Coffey County and the
World.” If you want to recognize someone for sharing God’s love with you
or others, please email the church office at lmasters@ umcburlington.org
for its possible inclusion in the newsletter. The deadline for submitting
newsletter information is the twentieth of each month.

Happy New Year to you all!
As you all are aware, the youth had a wonderful 2013. They had 3 main
objectives: learn to serve God, learn to serve others and learn to take care of them-
selves in a Christian manner. All 3 tasks were accomplished and then some!
Well, 2014 is more of the same, but bigger. My best guess is there will be almost twice the number of
kids attending similar events this year as we had last year. As you can probably guess, the more kids, the more
things will cost. The church has already stepped up by providing some funding in the budget. But that only
gets the kids half way to their events. So, the youth's first fundraiser will be their annual Valentine Dinner
next month on the 16th following the 10:30 service. Mark your calendars, and we hope to see you there!
Here is the lowdown on the next few month's things the youth will be doing, so please keep them in
your prayers. First was the OneEvent, the new Great Plains first youth event on Jan 4th and 5th. This gave the
youth the opportunity to meet and bond with other Christian youth from all over the states of Kansas and Ne-
braska as well as participating in some breakout sessions designed to strengthen their faith.
The second event of the year is Feb 7th and 8th in Lincoln, NE. This is another Dare2Share event.
This one is centered on Daniel and his faith and trust in God. Sandwiched in the middle of the second and
third events is the Valentine Dinner on Feb 16th, in case you forgot.
The third event in three months is Young Christian's Weekend in Branson March 28th to 30th. Even
though this event is centered at Silver Dollar City, many other activities will help fill the days. Many out-
standing speakers and presenters will be there to share their faith and the importance of surrounding oneself
with other believers.
As you can see, the first 3 months of the year pack a pretty good punch for the youth. With God's guid-
ing hand and your support, we, the youth group, will do our best to represent Burlington United Methodist
Church to the best of our abilities. I am so proud of these kids and you should be too!
God Bless!

CHRISTIA EDUCATIO EWS
By Director Adrienne Fleming
Greetings in 2014! I am so excited to embark upon this new journey as your
Christian Education Director, and I look forward to many exciting opportunities that we
will have together as a church family. What better time of year could there be than the New Year to forge new
relationships and friendships?
Our Sunday School youth enjoyed a fun-filled New Year’s Celebration last Sunday, January 5, 2014.
Resolutions were discussed and fruit pizza and punch were enjoyed by all that attended. A heartfelt “Thank
You” goes out to all that assisted in this wonderful time for our youth. Keep your eyes open for more informa-
tion about a Super Bowl Sunday celebration and Valentine’s Day party coming in the future as well.
If you feel called to offer your services to any of our events whether it be Children’s Message,
Children’s Church, or one of our special programs, please do not hesitate to contact me. I may be reached at
[email protected], and I am more than happy to answer any questions, listen to your thoughts and ideas,
or receive whatever may be in your heart. I wish you all a happy and blessed 2014!
In His love,
Adrienne Fleming
