MAKE YOUR PLANS TO BE THERE!
Praise be to God that in our time of need the elders and congregation
of the Sunset Church of Christ opened welcoming arms and offered helping hands so that the flames of love the CHFC community has worked so fervently to maintain would continue to burn brightly in the hearts of so many believers. Just last month, volunteers helped to relocate the central office of Christian Homes for Children, while our new “acting” executive Director labored to put together a leadership team that would not only honor the memories of the pio-neers that have come before us, but that would also reinvigorate and strengthen the spirits of the entire Christian Homes for Children audience. We are humbled and honored that so many of you continue to make enormous sacrifices while diligently laboring in the vineyards for our children. Therefore we have put our trust in God, and have embarked on new initiatives that we are confident will serve as catalysts for positive change. John Hood, Jr., the son of legendary CHFC pioneer, Lorine Hood has en-gaged a new Director of Information, Rafael Gonzalez, who has already erected a brand new website equipped with all the features necessary to help launch the CHFC ‘message of love’ into the global stratosphere. New Directors, Joe Fernan-dez (Fiscal Affairs) ,David Capiro (External Relations), and Wayne Adams have already implemented directives aimed at preserving the integrity and honor of the CHFC mission. Michael Hursey is already garnering resources to be used in service of God’s children. Director of Operations and Founder, George Brown, is now just a telephone call away while Director of Program Services, Mary Menzies, conducts the day-to-day operations of the ministry. Conscientious forerunners Tony Mijares, Charles Gatton, Jack Smith and Steve Hogan are still working tirelessly on behalf of our children. While all of our other Directors as-sist in providing special support services for the children.
The dynamic and incomparable Ruth Calvin has already called to remind the leadership that the time to solicit donations for upcoming events is now. While Nellie Dassaw is urging our ‘Helping Hands’ volunteers to come forth. Each member of the leadership team has pledged their time, energy, and commitment to the practice of pure and undefiled religion. We, therefore, challenge every member of the Christian Homes for Children community to find the place where God can best use you!

We Want to Hear From You!!
Congratulations to Taylor Chaffin, Daniel Diaz, Bradley Mixson, and Greg Spelios. These youthful soldiers for Christ secured the winning trophy at this years annual Golf Tour-nament. In times of great distress, these warriors along with all of our golfers whose names appear on the cheerful givers list, have come to the rescue of abused and neglected children.
More than 50 years ago, the elders at the Hialeah church of
Christ had a dream to provide homes of love for abused and neglected children. That dream took shape in the purchase of a house first occupied by the Powell family, then by Del and Mabel Allen. Harold and Ruthie McCormick also adopted and raised a child as their very own. These elders and others who would join them kept that dream alive when they purchased property and set aside land for the construction of homes. It was my honor to have brought their dream to reality by securing funds for the construction and the operation of five homes we called “Loveland Villas.” The first two homes were built with funds provided by Bob and Edna Bishop. The other Hialeah homes were dedicated to Chuck and Beverly Gatton, Tony and Laurie Mijares and Barbara Brown, each of whom donated more than enough to con-struct and to provide operational funds as well, as has John Hood, Jr. for the Driftwood congregation. Along the way, we built permanent homes at the Hollywood Hills, Fort Pierce (Midway Road) and Driftwood churches of Christ. In addition, we have provided special support services in community homes, mainly in the Hialeah area. In all, we have given hope to more than 1100 otherwise defenseless children over the past 38 years. The ministry is especially grateful for those at the Hialeah church of Christ who had to put up with the often-unruly children, especially when they first came to us. Largely, because of their allowing our presence on church property, we witnessed adoptions in nearly every home, in some cases as many as five or six. Wow! God bless those Hialeah parents and other wonderful Christians who worshiped at the Hialeah church of Christ whose names belong in the Lamb’s Book of Life. As a further testament to the saints at Hialeah, they led most of the children to become Christians. A child once told me, “Just think. If I hadn’t come here, I wouldn’t have known about Jesus Christ.” The “Great Recession” has wreaked havoc with our ministry, especially the past three years. We have not been able to provide the array of support ser-vices we once did. Yet, it’s not just our work that has suffered. The Christian Chronicle reports that 50% of children’s homes operated by churches of Christ have closed their doors, perhaps forever. This ministry also faces an uncertain future. While the sale of the Hialeah church property brought a “good price,” the elders chose to return to the child-care ministry only what they stated we put into the homes at the time they were built – 30 years ago. This leaves the child-care ministry without sufficient funds for rebuilding any of the homes – though requested and expected. In today’s market, the cost of reconstruction will be about $1,000,000. As you can see, the challenge is so great that the very survival of this long-standing ministry over the long term will de-pends upon our providing for God’s children to keep the flickering flame from dying out. Can God’s children count on you?

T he ministry is calling on all active Advisory Council members to mobilize. This special volunteer unit in God’s army carries out invaluable services in defense of abused andneglected children through recruitment and guidance of willing troops at their respective congregations. The following “Helping Hands” have helped to fill the urgent needs of the ministry through their participation in many of our CHFC events. Their help with last year’s annual “Cookout For Kids” was critical to its success. We hope to inspire them to participate again this year.

Bob and Evelyn Parnett Created a Lasting Legacy…
Bob and Evelyn Parnett were faithful servants in God’s kingdom. Bob served as a deacon at the Miami Gardens Church of Christ for many years. They participated in activities and fund-raisers to give hope to hurting children as they watched the work grow from a dream and a prayer to the program having now provided homes of love for more than 1100 children over the past 38 years. Because of their compassion by their having established a living legacy, our founder, Dr. George Brown, paid special tribute at the 24th Annual Participation Dinner in November. You, too, may show your compassion along with the Parnetts and others.
Remember God’s children in our watch-care in your will and you can give hope to hurting children. You may choose any of the following options:
A GIFT included in your will or living trust can establish a lasting
legacy.
A GIFT of excess retirement funds such as pension plans or Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) may allow you to give more, while eliminating taxes that may otherwise largely deplete those assets.
GIFTS of life insurance that has fulfilled its original purpose may offer excellent tax benefits. Policies that you have purchased to protect a loved one who no longer needs that protection can be an excellent
way to make a gift in honor of that person.
All gifts of any size are sincerely appreciated. We are creating a special plaque to honor those who have already shown wisdom and compassion by leaving in their will at least $500 in giving hope to hurting children in our watch-care. We will be happy to assist you in establishing a lasting legacy for God’s chil-dren. Call us at 305-825-0517 or 386-615-4552 or email us at [email protected].
