GLOSSARYTREND TERMS OF THE SEASON
CARDIGAN | Named after England's 7th
Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868), these knitted
jackets are an autumn wardrobe staple and
they triumph over their rival, the jumper,
due to its ability to be worn open or closed.
Those big pockets can come in handy too.
CASHMERE | Coveted wool from the
Cashmere goat, which is extremely soft
and one of the world's most expensive
and valuable natural fibres. Guaranteed
to keep you warm all autumn and winter.
CHECKS | This fashion staple has been
around for centuries and comes in all different
styles and colours. Some of the more
popular are Pepita (checks with a diagonal
link), Vichy (typically two-tonal and made of
cotton), Glen check (double, overlapping
check in two colours) and Tartan (colourful
fabric traditionally used for making Kilts).
BBEANIE | This hat might come without a
bobble, but it does come with a curious name.
The term most likely stems from the colloquial
use of 'bean' as a word for your head. These
hats made of jersey or cotton are often worn
over the ears and down over your forehead
to keep you warm as the temperatures drop.
C
CANVAS | Made of a strong and durable
weave, canvas isn't just perfect for painting
on. In fact, it is great for making bags and
tents too.
DDIY KIT | Get your latest DIY project off the
ground with a DIY kit containing everything
you need to create own autumn gem.
Most importantly they contain step-by-step
instructions.
42
FFOLD-AWAY CLUTCH | This season
the clutch has become handier still. Fold it
away so you can store it in your handbag for
when you need it most later.
HHOUND'S TOOTH | This popular
check normally consists of two colours and
a rectangular, tooth like pattern. It can also be
referred to as Dog's Tooth.
M
MERINO WOOL | Like Cashmere, Merino
wool is highly coveted due to its softness
and high quality. Originally stemming from
North Africa, the Merino sheep made their
way to Spain with the Marinid dynasty.
PPARKA | These hooded and filled
anoraks get their name from the Inuit's
language. They shifted their negative
image in the early 1990s and became the
winter coat of choice with the help of Liam
Gallagher and Indie Pop.
PEPLUM | Sewn to the waist of
women's clothing this fabric extension
creates an hourglass effect. The term
peplum stems from the Greek for 'tunic'.
QQUARTZ | An oxide mineral that is
hugely popular in jewellery making due to
its strength, polished finish and ease to cut.
Quartz comes in a whole host of colours
ranging from yellow (Citrine), grey-brown
(Smoky), pink (Rose), violet (Amethyst) right
across to blood red (Jasper).
