Low Budget Video AnalysisImogen Heap – Aha!

Mise en Scene

The video features a variety of different strands and shots, as this adds to the complex and frantic feel of the video. This includes thorns/bushes/dance studios/and other more ‘random’ settings. At the start, there is a silhouette of a person sitting outside over bushes and grass, this creates quite spooky atmosphere, similar to that of a horror film.

Many props have been used to emphasise the horror theme such as knifes/ropes/blood/chains and other props that suggest the theme of pain and horror. As the cuts are fast, it is hard to focus on each object and setting, making it more creepy as we only see small parts. They have also used a toy box with a dancer and a tune, which is widely know to be a horror prop in movies so relates to their theme well.

The costume isn’t featured as much, and not as clearly as the shots are too fast and the lighting is extremely low key. However they are dark and plain, again emphasising the ‘horror’ theme.

The effect of having low key lighting also adds to the eerie feeling and makes it more difficult to distinguish what we are seeing. The lighting is also always behind the artist, which is unconventional as it means we cannot see her face – however adds to the horror theme.

When following the images in more detail, they have used props and shots to emphasise the lyrics. As these are also quite obscure, this adds to the horror theme and relates the images to the song more. The use of these props and settings are conventional for this genre as they create the scary image that the fans will be looking for.

Editing

The editing is extremely fast paced which matches the tempo of the song and adds to the eerie atmosphere as it makes the audience feel quite uncomfortable as we aren’t able to focus on what is seen in the shot.

They have used effects such as overlays and fades to add to the texture of the video and distort the images further – making it more related to the horror theme. There is also use of slow-mo and sped up shots which again helps to distort the images further and highlight certain shots such as the ballerina dancing or violent actions. Additionally, the use of reverse filming also adds to the distorted image and makes it look more interesting, for example with the uniting of ropes around the hands.

They have used many jump cuts to again distort the shots and make the movements more jagged. This adds to the horror theme that they are going for, especially with the extreme close ups of the artist as they make her look distorted and scary. Conventional for all music videos, they have used cross cutting to show a range of shots and settings/props, the fast pace makes this more noticeable and confusing.

Camera Work

The main shots used are close ups and extreme close ups as this distorts the images further as it becomes more difficult to distinguish what each object it. The use of extreme close ups on the people also add to the uncomfortable horror theme as they have focused on body parts such as mouth and eyes which relates to the horror image they are creating. Close ups also help to emphasise certain details such as blood and highlight certain props.

Some long and mid shots are used to display certain objects and movements in a more obvious way. Such as with the ballerina as the longer shots allow us to see her movements, which again adds to the uncomfortable feel of the video as she is moving her body in ways that almost distorts it by highlighting certain features such as bones.

The camera has a lot of movement with zooms and jagged shifts when filming by hand, this again helps to distort the image as it makes it even harder to focus on the shots. The constant movement works with the fast editing to emphasise the uncomfortable and fast movement of the video in conjunction with the pace of the song.

They have also used obscurely framed shots as this adds to the uncomfortable and unconventional image of the video, as well as tilts and low/high angle as this obscures the audiences view further.
