We're Open for Business

Lower Providence business community members shared their perspectives on economic development with Township officials at a roundtable discussion on April 29. Hosted by the Township's Business Development Committee, the event was attended by some 30 business owners/operators, brokers and real estate agents.

Supervisor Colleen Eckman, a member of the Business Development Committee, welcomed the attendees. "We're willing to listen and we want to hear your thoughts," she said and emphasized that the Board of Supervisors is committed to filling vacant properties and growing the existing businesses.

Those in attendance were asked what brought them to the event. In addition to the opportunity to provide their input, many said they wanted to find out how they could work together to help the township.

Township Manager Rich Gestrich opened the roundtable by updating the group on the Township's ongoing work in three key areas: Infrastructure, planning, and media-based efforts. Projects being

completed in partnership with the state and Montgomery County include the Arcola Road Bridge replacement and the Route 422/363 interchange project. He explained that the Township has put into place a 5-year road resurfacing plan.

The attendees then assessed the Township's strengths and weaknesses and their own successes and challenges. A safe place to live and work and great location were high on many of their lists, as was the fact that there are no mercantile, gross

receipts or business privilege taxes. Responsiveness also was cited with one attendee noting, "A focus group like this is very rare and reflects that the Township is very supportive." Others brought procedural challenges to the attention of Township officials.

All agreed that the roundtable was very beneficial and saw value in future events. If you'd like to be included in future Business Development events, contact [email protected].

Sacrifice and Service Commemorated with PlaqueLower Providence Township police officers joined fellow law enforcement officials from across Montgomery County on April 27, 2015 to dedicate a plaque to Chief John J. Culp who died in the line of duty more than 50 years ago. The ceremony was part of the Montgomery County Hero Cop Program that honors men and women who have been killed or died in the line of duty. Chief Culp, Lower Providence Township's first full-time police chief, died on Christmas Day 1963 while serving the citizens of Lower Providence Township.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman hosted the ceremony, which included speakers Jimmy Binns and Lower Providence Township Police Chief Francis Carroll. Binns, an attorney, founded the Hero Cop Program in 2001 to honor men and women in law enforcement who were killed or died in the line of duty in Philadelphia. The program has since expanded to Montgomery County.

Chief Culp served with State Police for 27 years, retiring in 1957, before being appointed as police chief in Lower Providence Township. On December 25, 1963, he was found unresponsive in his patrol car was transported to Montgomery Hospital where he was pronounced dead; he had suffered a heart attack.

In his remarks, Chief Carroll noted that the Hero Plaque honors Chief Culp's s a c r i f i c e a n d s e r v i c e t o t h e community. He said that the location for the plaque, next to the entrance to the police station, was chosen so that it would be viewed by all those coming to the station, whether they be victims, witnesses, Scouts visiting for a tour, or someone paying a parking ticket.

"Most importantly," Chief Carroll said, "we wanted the plaque to be viewed by the police officers of the Lower P r o v i d e n c e To w n s h i p P o l i c e Department each and every time that they entered the doors of the station."

Chief Culp's daughter, Carolyn Bigelow, and her husband, Dick Bigelow, a former Pottstown Borough police officer, traveled from Cape Cod, Mass. to attend the ceremony. With Chief Carroll, they unveiled the plaque. Sponsored by the Township, the plaque reads: In memory of Chief John J. Culp. Died in the line of duty protecting the citizens of Lower P r o v i d e n c e To w n s h i p a n d Montgomery County on December 25, 1963. Dedicated by his Family and Friends.

In addition to his law enforcement duties, Chief Culp was involved in

many local organizations. A Mason, he was a member of Warren Lodge 310 F & AM of Collegeville, the Lehigh Consistory of Allentown and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Norristown Forest. He had served as the president of the Collegeville Acacia Club, was a member and president of the Collegeville Lions Club, and was a member of the West Norriton Lions Club. Chief Culp was a member of the Lower Providence, Jefferson and Collegeville volunteer fire companies and served as one of the organizers when the Lower Perkiomen Little League was formed in 1952.

With Chief Culp's daughter, Carolyn ndBigelow and her husband, Dick, (2

from left and right) are Jimmy Binns, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman and Lower Providence Township Police Chief Francis Carroll.

Identity Theft and Credit Card FraudWhat To Do If You're a Victim of Identity Theft/Credit Card Fraud

When someone uses your name and other personal information to commit fraud, it's a crime. The problem is that you may not know that your identity and/or credit card information has been stolen until you get bills for credit card(s) you didn't open, credit card charges you didn't authorize or a bad credit report with debts that you never knew you had.

Here are some steps to take when you discover you're a victim of identity theft or credit card fraud:

Contact the Fraud Department of any of the three major credit-reporting bureaus to place a fraud alert on your account. Once they've confirmed the alert, the other two bureaus will automatically be notified. The alert signals that credit should not be issued without contacting you by telephone. If you are the victim of fraud, you may order a free copy of your credit report from all three credit bureaus.

Contact creditors for any account(s) tampered with or open fraudulently. If an identity thief has changed the billing address on an account, close the account and when opening a new account ask that it be password protected. Contact the Lower P r o v i d e n c e To w n s h i p P o l i c e Department, 610-539-5901, to file a police report. Having a police report will help prove your case to creditors and with PennDOT if you need to apply for a new driver's license number.

Other resources:Federal Trade Commission, 1-877-438-4338 or www.consumer.gov/idtheft - The Commission maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law e n f o r c e m e n t a g e n c i e s fo r investigations and can offer ways to restore your credit.

Flooding, water quality, and other stormwater issues may seem too big for one person's actions to have impact, but this is not necessarily true. Activities such as mowing and fertilizing your lawn have an impact on water resources.

A stormwater friendly lawn is one that can absorb rainwater and does not harm local streams by the over-application of chemicals. Likewise, a stormwater friendly garden is one that uses organic compost as fertilizer and also minimizes or eliminates the use of chemicals.

By spreading grass clippings on your lawn, you can reduce the amount of fertilizer needed. If mulching is not possible, bag the clippings and store them in a compost area where the organic material can be used as a fertilizer as a later date. It is important to keep clippings out of storm drains and the street where they could end

Protecting Water Resources: Small Ways to Make a Big Impactup in a storm drain taking the clippings directly to local streams. There they decompose and act as major pollutants increasing nitrogen to unsafe levels for fish and other aquatic life.

Set your mower height to 3 inches or higher. Taller grass slows the rate of runoff and will produce a deeper and denser root system. Deeper roots have access to more water stored in the ground and can reduce irrigation needed during droughts. Dense roots will absorb more water, reducing lawn runoff and preventing erosion. Keep grass clippings and chopped leaves on the lawn. The clippings decompose quickly, provide important nutrients and create an organic layer that encourages stormwater infiltration.

While many insects are harmless to people and play a role in maintaining a healthy lawn or garden, some create problems. Once you identify the pests you have, consult an expert for a non-chemical alternative to controlling them.

Thousands of online courses and video tutorials are available on topics of software, photography, 3-D animation, web development, video and audio production, business skills, and more. To access the site, login with your library card through the website, lowerprovidencelibrary.org. The link is on the Electronic Resource page in the eLibrary tab.

The library also has purchased six new laptop computers loaded with Microsoft Office, Photoshop Essentials and Premier Essentials and is increasing the level of technology classes offered in the library. The increase in technology training and resources is in answer to the high priority placed on developing technology skills by those who responded to the library's 2013 Community Survey. This project is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, Governor.

Lots of Family Fun at Annual Fireman's Fair The annual Lower Providence Township Volunteer Fire Company "Fireman's Fair" will take place June 11 through June 20, 2015.

The fair has been a major fund raiser for the Fire Company since the 1940's. What started out as a horse show on

the grounds of Superior Tube Company before the fire company purchased the grounds on Ridge Pike has become one of the best and largest fairs in the area.

Working hand in hand with Reithoffer Shows, the fire company strives to bring family entertainment to Lower Providence. The Fire Company runs the "Cabana" - a food stand with hamburgers , hot dogs , s teak

sandwiches and other grill favorites. The fresh corn stand is partnered with the Lions Club, for the tastiest fresh corn in the area. The fire company also runs the "Clam Stand" with fresh seafood from the Eastern shore of Maryland. And, of course, there's the famous Fire Company Donuts. The amount of donuts sold per evening at

the fair averages about 1,500!

Ride Megapasses will be available for sale starting in May. Please check the Fire Company Facebook page and website, lpfire.com, for updates as the fair approaches. Please come out and support your 100% volunteer fire company.
