Easter Sunday FIRST READING: Acts 10: 34, 37- 43 “To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who be- lieves in him will receive forgive- ness of sins through his name.” RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 118 “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.” SECOND READING: Col. 3: 1-4 “Look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is.” Or SECOND READING: 1 Cor. 5: 6-8 “Throw away the old yeast, that you may be new dough.” SEQUENCE: “Grave-clothes I saw where none lay dead, the cloth that once had veiled his head!” GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: 1 Cor. 5: 7-8 “Christ. our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed; let us then feast with joy in the Lord .” GOSPEL: Jn. 20: 1-9 or Mk. 16: 1-7 “When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.” The gospel from the Easter Vigil may be read in place of this. At an afternoon Mass, another gospel may be read: Lk. 24: 13-35 SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: forgive- ness of sins; new life; resurrection. FOCUS: “Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, has risen.” REFLECTION: We are Easter people and alleluia is our song. God wants us to sing alleluia and to sing it truthfully from our hearts... Let us sing alleluia with our voice and our heart, with our mouth and with our life.” St. Augustine “A Christian is an alleluia from head to foot.” St. Augustine of Hippo “Strive to keep in order your thoughts about worldly concerns. Try to arrive at a state in which your body can carry out its usual work, while leaving you free to be always with the Lord in spirit. The merciful Lord will give you freedom from cares, and where this freedom pre- vails everything is done in its own time, and nothing is a worry or a burden. See, ask—and it will be given.” Theophane the Recluse APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The images of light and rebirth prevail. The first reading summarizes the basis of our Chris- tian faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The second reading involves getting rid of the old life and replacing it with a new source, that which is initiated in Christian baptism. The profession of faith is replaced by the rite of renewal, of baptismal vows, thus reinforcing the premise that we must be reborn as followers of Christ. Make full use of incense, the presence of the paschal candle, and the use of the rite of blessing and sprinkling with Holy Water to reaf- firm with our senses that which we feel in our hearts. The gospel accla- mation: “Christ has become our paschal sacrifice; let us feast with joy in the Lord,” should be given heightened attention as this acclamation sums up the Easter message. Sample General Intercessions: Introduction—My dear brothers and sisters, with joy at Christ’s rising from the dead, let us turn to God our Father in prayer: • For religious and secular leaders throughout the world, that they may lead and serve with the love of the risen Christ; • For true and lasting world peace, that the peace of Christ will permeate all the ends of the earth; • For our suffering sisters and brothers, that their sorrow will be turned into lasting joy; • For our community and families, that we may have the faith and strength to bear witness to Christ’s resurrection. “Dear young people of every lan- guage and culture, a high and ex- hilarating task awaits you: that of becoming men and women capable of solidarity, peace and love of life, with respect for everyone. Become craftsmen of a new humanity, where brothers and sisters — members all of the same family — are able at last to live in peace.” Pope John Paul II _______________________________________ YOUTH GROUPS In Praise of His Name (O'Connor) BB, MI, GP, GTR, GC, G2, JS, RS Our God Reigns VAO, W&S, WCH Rejoice, Chosen People (Haas) G-4869 Sweet Redeemer (Angrisano) S&S Waters of Life SM, WCH, W&S, VAO _______________________________________ HISPANIC HYMNS Alaban Todos CEL, UV Aleluya: el Senor Resucito CEL, CPD FYC Agua de Vida (Cortez) BB/MI, JS Cristo Jesus Resucito CEL, CPD, FYC Nuestra Pascua CEL, CPD, FYC Rescucito! FIRST READING: Acts 2: 42-47“The faithful lived together andowned everything in common.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 118 “Give thanks to the Lordfor he is good, for his love is ever-lasting.”SECOND READING: 1 Pet. 1: 3-9“He has given us a new birth as hissons, by raising Jesus Christ fromthe dead.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Jn. 20: 29 “You believe in me, Tho-mas, because you have seen me;happy those who have not seen me,but still believe.”GOSPEL: Jn. 20: 19-31“After eight days Jesus came in andstood among them.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: a newbirth, faith, community, praise, re-joicing

FOCUS: “Doubt no longer, but be-lieve.” The resurrected Christ ap-pears, strengthening the faith ofthe apostles.

REFLECTION: “I long to under-stand in some degree thy truth, which my heart believes and loves. For I do not seek to understand thatI may believe, but I believe in orderto understand. For this also I be-lieve, that unless I believed, Ishould not understand.”

St. Anselm of Canterbury

“For there can be no direct knowl-edge of God without an exceed-ingly great love, and such lovemust come, not from the the brainalone, but from the whole man—that is, from the heart. It is neces-sary, then, for the ascetic to de-scend from the head into the heart. He is not required to abandon hisintellectual powers—the reason, too, is a gift of God—but he is calledto descend with the mind into hisheart.” Timothy Ware

“Where there is charity and wis-dom, there is neither fear nor igno-rance. Where there is patience andhumility, there is neither anger nor

vexation. Where there is poverty andjoy, there is neither greed nor ava-rice. Where there is peace and medi-tation, there is neither anxiety nordoubt.” St. Francis of Assisi

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The sprinkling riteshould be given special emphasisduring the Easter season. Introducethe rite by relating each Sunday’sgospel message to our baptismalcommitment. Introduce the generalintercessions focusing on our needto turn towards God through thesacraments, so that we may receivethe strength to bear witness to theresurrected Christ.SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Rite of Blessing and Sprinklingwith Holy Water: See sixth set ofsample invocations.Preface: First for Easter.Roman Canon with proper com-memorations for EasterSolemn blessing for Easter

R.C.I.A.• Is seeing believing or is believing seeing? (see today’s reflection) Today’s gospel challenges us to be-lieve that we may see. The gospelrequires faith on our part so that wemay be open to the grace of God. Ifwe depend on our intellect to vali-date our faith we will never haveenough proof. Our brains alwaysmanifest doubts, which is a naturalfunction of the brain, to evaluate anddiscriminate. By dwelling in ourhearts, however, we begin to believebecause of God’s proximity to oursenses and we in turn see the truthsof our faith.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ask the children if they know whata “doubting Thomas” is. Point outthat we all have a little of this qualityin us. Have they ever heard the ex-pression—seeing is believing? It’shard to believe in something youcannot see. There are every daythings that we take for grantedwhether we see them or not: gravity,

the sun in the sky, air to breathe, andso on. There is a place in our spiri-tual hearts where it is possible tobelieve things spiritual. If we findthis place we have found a greattreasure house of faith. The Biblepoints out that faith was always in-volved in the miracles performedby Jesus. He would say that yourfaith has healed you. Anne Frank isa great example of unshakeable be-lief in the goodness of humankindeven when her mind and sensestold her the opposite. If we believe,we will see for believing is seeing._______________________________________

FIRST READING: Acts 2: 14, 22-28 “It was impossible for him to beheld by the power of Hades.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 16“Show us, Lord, the path of life.”SECOND READING:1 Pet. 1: 17-21 “The ransom thatwas paid to free you was the bloodof the Lamb, Jesus Christ.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:See Lk. 24: 32 “Lord Jesus, makeyour word plain to us, make ourhearts burn with love when youspeak.”GOSPEL: Lk. 24: 13-35“They had recognized him at thebreaking of the bread.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: the pathof life; Jesus in our midst; the Breadof Life

FOCUS:“They told their story ofwhat happened on the road andhow they had recognized him atthe breaking of the bread.”

REFLECTION: “Our Lord doesnot come from Heaven every dayto stay in a golden ciborium. Hecomes to find another Heaven, theHeaven of our soul in which Heloves to dwell.”

St Therese of Lisieux

“He need have no fear of error inbelieving that God is calling him tocontemplation, regardless of whatsort of person he is now or has beenin the past. It is not what you arenor what you have been that Godsees with his all-merciful eyes, butwhat you desire to be.”

Anonymous,The Cloud of Unknowing

“Love God with all your heart, andyou’ve nothing to fear; death orpunishment, judgement or hell;love, when it reaches its fullgrowth, is an unfailing passport toGod’s presence.” Thomas à Kempis

“God of Mercy, to you and yourSon, together with the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, I give blessings and

glory always, both now and for ageswithout end. Ah, Lord God, you theholy one, you my lover, when youcome into my heart the whole of myinmost being leaps with joy. You aremy glory, the comfort of my heart,my stronghold and my refuge in myhour of peril.” Thomas à Kempis

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce thesprinkling rite by stating that we,like the disciples on the road toEmmaus, are on a spiritual journey.Though we are often made blind byour own preoccupations and troub-les, even by complacency, the HolySpirit guides us to recognize Jesus inthe breaking of the bread. Introducethe breaking of the bread by pro-claiming that this is the bread thatbrings us the awareness of Jesus whois beside us, behind us, and allaround us.SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Rite of Blessing and Sprinklingwith Holy WaterPreface: Third for Easter.

R.C.I.A.How often we are shaken in life andforget essential information. Unlesswe are grounded in faith, the cir-cumstances of life can make us loseour self-esteem, our values, andeven our faith. The disciples on theroad to Emmaus had been shaken tothe foundation of their beliefs. Theone in whom they placed all theirhopes was dead. Though they hadlearned in scripture and from Jesushimself that he was to die and comeback to life, they lost sight and beganto doubt all that they had heard andseen. We too can lose sight of Jesus inour daily lives if we become over-whelmed by life’s demands. Likethose disciples we must listen to theWord and come to the Eucharistwith burning hearts.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordSometimes when we are really upsetwe forget things. If, for instance, weare mad at someone, we can forget

their good qualities, thinking onlyabout the things we’re mad about. If we are depressed we may not seethe beauty in life.• What did the disciples in today’s gospel forget? Make the connection that just asJesus revealed his truths in thescripture and his identity in thebreaking of the bread, he revealshimself to us through the bible, through people, and through theEucharist._______________________________________

FIRST READING:Acts 2: 14, 36-41 “God has madeJesus both Lord and Christ.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 23“The Lord is my shepherd; I shallnot want.”SECOND READING:1 Pet. 2: 20-25 “You have goneastray but now you have comeback to the shepherd and guardianof your souls.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Jn. 10: 14 “I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me.”GOSPEL: Jn. 10: 1-10“I am the gate of the sheepfold.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: goodshepherd; wisdom of God; innerguidance

FOCUS:“I am the gate of thesheepfold.” Jesus reveals that he isthe way by which we shall reachGod.

REFLECTION: “As no darknesscan be seen by anyone surroundedby light, so no trivialities can cap-ture the attention of anyone whohas his eyes on Christ. The manwho can keep his eyes upon thehead and origin of the whole uni-verse has them on virtue in all itsperfections; he has them on truth,on mercy, immortality and on eve-rything else that is good, for Christis goodness itself.”

St. Gregory of Nyssa

“Grant that we may be one flockand one shepherd. Do not allowyour net to be torn, help us to beservants of unity." Pope Benedict XVI

“The Father of all has no namegiven him since he is unbegotten. For a being who has a name im-posed on him has an elder to givehim that name. “Father” and“God,” “Creator,” “Lord,” “Mas-ter,” are not names but appella-tions derived from his benefits andworks.” St. Justin Martyr

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Emphasize that Je-sus came, not merely as a teacher, but to open the door to the kingdomof God, by giving us the new cov-enant: if we love as he does, we willbe with God. A lamb of God fractionrite could be used based on the im-ages from today’s gospel: Jesus thegate, Jesus the shepherd, etc. Butdon’t take the metphor of the sheepand their shepherd too far. Most ofus today have never seen a shep-herd. And, any clergyman whothinks laypeople are sheep is in for apainful epiphany.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Rite of Blessing and Sprinklingwith Holy WaterSample General Intercessions:My brothers and sisters, let us turnour hearts and prayers to God whoshepherds our lives:• For the Holy Church of God, that it remain attentive and to the rights and needs of all people;• For those who work for peace and mercy, that their vigilance will be strengthened; • For those in positions of authority, that the Lord Jesus will guide them to seek good for all humankind;• For all those deprived of freedom be- cause of what they believe or what they are, that God will deliver them from oppression;• For our parish and local community, that Christ will find us watchful and

ready at his coming.Preface: Second or third for Easter.Solemn Blessing of the Easter Sea-son orPrayers over the people: Sixth

R.C.I.A.We call Jesus Lord because he tri-umphed over death. His victoryover death proves to us that he is theonly one who can lead us to eternallife. To follow Jesus’ lead we mustlove like he does. That is his way. That is the only Way. The Way toeternal life is to love like Jesus loves.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word There are no short cuts in life. Wecannot jump over the gate or find aneasy way through life’s challenges.Reflect on today’s gospel passagereferring to those who try to enterthe sheepfold in some way otherthan the gate, as thieves. God whoknows everything, knows whomwe treat with real respect, and thosewhom we ridicule, whom we arecontemptuous of, whom we don’tadmit are our equals in the eyes ofGod. According to Jesus, we have tolove everyone, just like he does. That is the gate to eternal life._______________________________________

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the lit-urgy with the idea that the gospelproclaims Jesus as the way to theFather. We need to constantlycheck our actions, for howevergood they may seem, they must

come from our inner closeness toJesus. Introduce the Lord’s Prayerwith an invitation to pray to the Fa-ther as the one who dwells in Himhas taught us.

R.C.I.A.Christians are exhorted not to sepa-rate ourselves from the world but tobe a part of it, all the while lovingGod and each creature in His uni-verse. The Christian message isneeded more than ever in the world.Jesus, the carpenter’s son, washedthe feet of his disciples on HolyThursday, to show how to love inhumility. We are exhorted to followHim in his humility, even though wehave been chosen by God to be cus-todians of the most important mes-sage ever heard: love one another, asI have loved you. It is this messagethat makes us a chosen race, a royalpriesthood.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordExplain to the children what a cor-nerstone is. In Peter’s letter today hecalls Jesus “the Living Stone.” Thisstone was not wanted: Jesus wasrejected and killed by people heloved. Through his resurrectionJesus became the cornerstone onwhich we build our lives. Eventhough people may reject our love,we must still love them, becausethat is the way to survive death, tolive forever with God in Heaven._______________________________________

FIRST READING: Act 8: 5-8, 14-17“They laid hands on them, and theyreceived the Holy Spirit.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 66“Cry out with joy to God all theearth.” or “Alleluia”SECOND READING: 1 Pet. 3: 15-18 “In the body he was put to death,in the spirit he was raised to life.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Jn.14: 23 “If anyone loves me, he willhold to my words, and my Fatherwill love him, and we will come tohim.”GOSPEL: Jn. 14: 15-21 “I shall askthe Father and he will give youanother Advocate.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: resurrec-tion; Holy Spirit; love of God

FOCUS: “I shall ask the Father andhe will give you another Advo-cate.”

REFLECTION: “Put Christ first, because he puts us first, and letnothing deter us from loving him.”

St. Cyprian of Carthage

“Father of Mercy, to you and youronly-begotten Son, together withthe Holy Ghost, the Comforter, Igive blessings and glory always, both now and for ages without end.Ah, Lord God, you the holy one,you my lover, when you come intomy heart the whole of my inmostbeing leaps with joy. You are myglory, the comfort of my heart, mystronghold and my refuge in myhour of peril.” Thomas à Kempis

“Faith means the fundamental re-sponse to the love that has offereditself up for me. It thus becomesclear that faith is ordered primarilyto the inconceivability of God’s love, which surpasses us and anticipatesus. Love alone is credible; nothingelse can be believed, and nothingelse ought to be believed. This is theachievement, the ‘work’ of faith: torecognize this absolute prius, whichnothing else can surpass; to believethat there is such a thing as love,

absolute love, and that there is noth-ing higher or greater than it. Fr. Hans Urs Von Balthasar

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Beginning withthis Sunday the focus shifts to thecoming of the Holy Spirit. The plan-ning committee should emphasizethe importance of the Holy Spirit inthe life of the community. Introducethe sprinkling rite by stating that thesame Spirit that leads us to baptismleads us to truth and salvation. Intro-duce the profession of faith by refer-ring to the spirit who gives us thestrength to proclaim our beliefs. Theprofession could be in an antiphonalstyle, with an assembly responsesuch as “We believe!”

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Rite of Blessing and Sprinklingwith Holy WaterSample General Intercessions:My brothers and sisters, let us turnour hearts and prayers to God whomsent us an advocate.• For the Holy Church of God, that it remain attentive and to the rights and needs of all people;• For those who work for peace and mercy, that their vigilance will be strengthened; • For those in positions of authority, that the Lord Jesus will guide them to seek good for all humankind;• For all those deprived of freedom be- cause of what they believe or what they are, that God will deliver them from oppression;• For our parish and local community, that Christ will find us watchful and ready at his coming.Preface: Fifth for Easter. orSolemn Blessing of the Easter Sea-son (no. 7)

R.C.I.A.As a preparation for Pentecost, study and discuss the role of theHoly Spirit in God’s salvation. Ask-ing the Holy Spirit to give you wis-dom; read the Gospels with the HolySpirit in mind, and see what insightscome to you.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordAsk the children to think of a timewhen someone they loved had to goaway for a while. What was it like? Was there anything that made theseparation easier? Before Jesus left, he promised togive his disciples something spe-cial. What was he referring to? Hesaid that the Holy Spirit wouldcome and guide them and remindthem of the things they needed toknow. Jesus didn’t teach his followerseverything but sent the Holy Spiritto help people understand life andGod. Ask the Holy Spirit to help youunderstand the teachings of Jesus._______________________________________

R.C.I.A.The ascension of Jesus to heaven liftsus to fill his role on earth. Now weare elevated and enabled to doGod’s work. We are not mere specta-tors. We are Christ’s hands and hisinstruments of salvation for thewhole world.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Jesus said he had to leave us, yet hewould be with us till the end of time. How is this possible? He is with usin the form of the Holy Spirit, who isour comforter and helper. In thisway we are connected to God nowand always. After Jesus went to Heaven, thedisciples were standing aroundlooking up at the sky in amazement. Some angels appeared to them andtold them to get on with what Jesushad told them to do. And that’swhat we have to do, too. (What didJesus tell us to do?)_______________________________________

Shine on our souls, O Living Light; From stain of error keep us free;Let songs of praise by day andnight, And vows of love arise to thee. Now let us sing in anthems sweet To God the Father and the Son,Who with the Holy Paraclete

Forever reigneth three in one.”Saint Ambrose

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Focus on the com-ing of the Holy Spirit. The presenceof the Holy Spirit leads the church toa deeper understanding of the pas-chal mystery. Introduce the liturgyby saying that through the HolySpirit the church was and is heldtogether. Ask the Holy Spirit toguide the church. A suitable re-sponse to the general intercessionsis, “Come through the Holy Spirit.”

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Rite of Blessing and Sprinklingwith Holy WaterPreface: First for AscensionSolemn Blessing for the AscensionSample General Intercessions:My brothers and sisters, let us turnour hearts and prayers to God whomglorified the Son.• For the Holy Church of God, that it remain attentive and to the rights and needs of all people;• For those who work for peace and mercy, that their vigilance will be strengthened; • For those in positions of authority, that the Lord Jesus will guide them to seek good for all humankind;• For all those deprived of freedom be- cause of what they believe or what they are, that God will deliver them from oppression;• For our parish and local community, that Christ will find us watchful and ready at his coming.

R.C.I.A. Continue to study and pray to theHoly Spirit. We christians believe inGod who is in the Son, and in the Sonwho is in God, and in the Holy Spiritwho is in the godhead and also in us.Compose a litany of the Holy Spirit:Our consoler, Our strength, Sourceof Wisdom, Who is with us always,The Constant, Sent by Jesus, etc.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Why did Jesus leave us?

Jesus said that he had to leave us yet

he would be with us till the end oftime. How could this be? Jesus, God the Father, and the HolySpirit are One. Jesus is still with usas the Holy Spirit, Jesus is our Com-forter, our Guide, our Salvation._______________________________________

FIRST READING: Act 2: 1-11“They were all filled with the HolySpirit and began to speak differentlanguages.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps.104 “Lord, send out your Spirit andrenew the face of the earth.”or “Alleluia”SECOND READING: 1 Cor. 12: 3-7, 12-13 “In the one Spirit we wereall baptized making one body.Jews as well as Greeks, slaves aswell as citizens.”SEQUENCE:“Come, O Spirit, from on high!”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:“Come Holy Spirit, fill the heartsof your faithful; and kindle in themthe fire of your love.”GOSPEL: Jn. 20: 19-23 “As theFather sent me, so I send you. Re-ceive the Holy Spirit.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: HolySpirit, fire of love, sending out.

FOCUS: “As the Father sent me, soI send you. Receive the HolySpirit.”

REFLECTION: “Those who areled by the Holy Spirit have trueideas; that is why so many ignorantpeople are wiser than the learned. The Holy Spirit is light andstrength.” St. John Vianney

“The Holy Spirit gives wisdomagainst folly, understanding againstdullness, counsel against rashness, fortitude against fears, knowledgeagainst ignorance, piety againsthardness of our heart, and fearagainst pride.” Pope St. Gregory

“Life is the strength to act. Spirituallife is the strength to act spiritually, according to the will of God. Manhas lost this strength; therefore un-til it is restored to him, he cannotlive spiritually, no matter howmuch he intends to. That is why theflow of grace into the soul of abeliever is essential for a true Chris-tian life. True Christian life is thelife of grace. A man makes some

religious resolution: but in order tobe able to act according to it, it isnecessary that grace be united withhis spirit. When this union is pres-ent, moral strength, hitherto evidentonly temporarily in his first enthusi-asm, is impressed on his spirit andremains there always. This re-estab-lishment of the moral strength of thespirit is effected by the regeneratingaction of baptism, through whichman is granted justification and thestrength to act after God in right-eousness and true holiness.” Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The forming of theSpirit-filled church is celebrated inglory. Invitations to prayer could fo-cus on the Spirit being the mediumthat delivers the Father.

Sample General Intercessions:Introduction—My brothers and sis-ters, God our Father wants allpeople to be saved and calls usthrough the Holy Spirit to know thetruth that Jesus’ commandment tolove one another as he loved us is theWay to God . Let us pray to God withall our hearts:• For the holy Church of God: that theSpirit guide and protect it;• For all peoples of the world: that theHoly Spirit unite them in peace andharmony;• For ourselves and our community, that the Holy Spirit guide us in thedirection of love.• Infinite and everlasting God, bestowupon our clergy and our congregationthy incomparable Grace, that we may beof benefit to others. We pray throughOur Lord, Jesus Christ, whom thoudidst send to teach us how to love likeYou do, with infinite and everlastingpurity.

R.C.I.A. Pentecost marks the end of the en-tire paschal cycle: Lent, Holy Week,Eastertime. Reflect on the periodfrom Ash Wednesday to PentecostSunday. What did you learn?

Children’s Liturgy of the Word How are people different while atthe same time similar? Tie this intothe celebration of Pentecost whenpeople from different nationalitiesconverged for a shared experience. The Holy Spirit made it possible forpeople of all languages to under-stand what was spoken. How does the church function likethis, with many nationalities con-verging in prayer, with a commongospel perspective?_______________________________________

FIRST READING: Ex. 34: 4-6, 8-9“The Lord God, ruler of all, merci-ful and loving.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Dan. 3“Glory and praise forever.”SECOND READING: 2 Cor. 13:11-13 “The grace of our Lord JesusChrist, and the love of God and thefellowship of the Holy Spirit bewith you all.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:See Rev. 1: 8 “Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: to Godwho is, who was, and who is tocome.”GOSPEL: Jn 3: 16-18 “God sent hisSon to save the world throughhim.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: wisdom, the wonder of God, the love ofGod, the Spirit of God , the HolySpirit

FOCUS: “Glory to the Father, andto the Son and the Holy Spirit: as itwas in the beginning, is now andwill be forever. Amen.”

REFLECTION: “We worship oneGod in Trinity in Unity, neitherconfounding the Persons, nor di-viding the Substance. The Father isGod, the Son is God, and the HolyGhost is God. Yet there are notthree gods, but one God. In thisTrinity nothing is before or after, nothing is greater or less: but allthree Persons coeternal togetherand equal.” St. Athanasius

“Think of the Father as a spring oflife begetting the Son like a riverand the Holy Ghost like a sea, forthe spring and the river and sea areall one nature. Think of the Fatheras a root, and of the Son as a branch, and the Spirit as a fruit, for thesubstance in these three is one. TheFather is a sun with the Son as raysand the Holy Ghost as heat.” St. John Damascus

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Begin the liturgyquietly, with a sense of contempla-tion that reflects the mystery of theTrinity. Consider using an entrancechant or litany such as the Trisagion(Holy is God) to help instill thissense of mystery. Introductions tosongs and prayers could focus on thewill of God made manifest, and thatthe Holy Spirit will lead us towardsthe truth. The introduction to theliturgy could encourage reflectionon the ways in which we perceivethe presence of God.Introductory Rite—The Rite of Sprinkling with HolyWater: The triune God is made manifestin the Holy Spirit who draws the churchtogether to pray.General Intercessions—Introduction: Gathered together inChrist as brothers and sisters, let us callto mind God’s blessings. Let us ask Godto hear our prayers through the HolySpirit:•That God may bring all Christianstogether in unity and faith;• That God may give us the strengthto rid the world of war;• That God may help us to showkindness to those who lack food, work, and shelter;• May we all reach out in love to oursisters and brothers;• May all of us gathered in this holyplace in faith, reverence, and love ofGod, feel love for all God’s works.

Preface: Preface of the Holy TrinityConcluding Rite—Solemn Blessing: First or fifth orSolemn Blessing: Of the Holy Spirit

R.C.I.A. You may never understand theTrinity. But you can love God theFather, God the Son, and God theHoly Ghost, and all God’s creatures. That’s all that matters. Tomorrow is the Feast of the Visita-tion. Read all about it in the firstchapter of Luke. These two prayers, from that chapter, with an addendaby St. Cyril, should be a part of yourdaily communication with God.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordWe experience the Trinity in the richdiversity of life, and of the underly-ing organization of all things. Talkto the children about the similaritiesbetween a tree's branches and thehuman circulatory system. Thereare all kinds of organized systemsthat speak of God the diverse._______________________________________

FIRST READING: Deut. 8: 2-3,14-16 “He gave you food which youand your fathers did not know.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Ps. 147“Praise the Lord, Jerusa-lem.”SECOND READING: 1 Cor. 10:16-17 “Though we are many, weform a single body because weshare in the same bread.”SEQUENCE:“Sing forth, O Zion, sweetly sing.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Jn. 6:51-22 “I am the living bread fromheaven, says the Lord; whoevereats this bread will live for ever.”GOSPEL: Jn. 6: 51-58 “My flesh isreal food and my blood is realdrink.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: breadand wine, the Eucharist, the won-der of God, miracles.

FOCUS: To participate in the Eu-charist is to experience Christamong us. This is the food thatgives us union with Jesus.

REFLECTION: “Do you want tohonor Christ’s body? Then... do nothonour him here in church bywearing silk, while you neglecthim outside the church where he iscold and naked.” St. John Chrysotom

“To celebrate the Eucharist ‘to eathis flesh and drink his blood’, meansto accept the wisdom of the Crossand the path of service. It meansthat we signal our willingness tosacrifice ourselves for others, asChrist has done. Our society des-perately needs this sign, and youngpeople need it even more so,tempted as they often are by theillusion of an easy and comfortablelife, by drugs and pleasure-seek-ing, only to find themselves in aspiral of despair, meaninglessnessand violence. It is urgent to changedirection and to turn to Christ. Thisis the way of justice, solidarity andcommitment to building a societyand a future worthy of the humanperson.” Pope John Paul II

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Through the Eu-charist, Jesus gives us the capacity tonourish the lives around us withlove.Introductory Rite—The Rite of Sprinkling with HolyWater: Make a connection betweenthe Eucharist and the covenantmade between God and us at bap-tism. OrPenitential Rite: Third, with sixthset of sample invocations.General Intercessions—Introduction: My sisters and broth-ers, through this common prayer, letus honor the love of Christ shown tous in the Eucharist.• For the holy Church of God: that theLord guide and protect us.• For all the peoples of the world: thatthe Lord unite us in peace and harmony;• For all our sisters and brothers in need:that the Lord strengthen us all throughhis body and blood;• For ourselves and our community:that we offer an acceptable sacrifice.Emphasize the liturgy of the Eucha-rist through a special ritualizedpreparation of the Altar during thepreparation of the gifts.Preface: Second preface for the HolyEucharistSinging the Eucharistic prayer canfurther emphasize this period as thecentral part of our Sunday gather-ing. Consider using the second eu-charistic prayer for children. Thisprayer is full of responses for theassembly and has a capacity to in-volve the assembly more deeply inthe liturgy.Concluding Rite—Prayers over the People: 3 or 18

R.C.I.A.The Eucharist gives us the grace andstrength to live like Jesus told us to,with love for everyone.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordThe liturgy contains the most impor-tant food of all—the Eucharist. Thisis the food that Jesus gave us to helpus experience God. From the time St. Clare (1193-1253)
