APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The images of lightand rebirth prevail. The first readingsummarizes the basis of our Chris-tian faith: Christ has died, Christ isrisen, Christ will come again. Thesecond reading involves getting ridof the old life and replacing it with anew source, that which is initiated inChristian baptism.The profession of faith is replaced bythe rite of renewal, of baptismalvows, thus reinforcing the premisethat we must be reborn as followersof Christ. Make full use of incense,the presence of the paschal candle,and the use of the rite of blessing andsprinkling with Holy Water to reaf-firm with our senses that which wefeel in our hearts. The gospel accla-mation: “Christ has become our paschalsacrifice; let us feast with joy in theLord,” should be given heightenedattention as this acclamation sumsup the Easter message.

R.C.I.A.• Is seeing believing or is believing seeing? (see today’s reflection) Today’s gospel challenges us to be-lieve that we may see. The gospelrequires faith on our part so that wemay be open to the grace of God. Ifwe depend on our intellect to vali-date our faith we will never haveenough proof. Our brains alwaysmanifest doubts, which is a naturalfunction of the brain, to evaluate anddiscriminate. By dwelling in ourhearts, however, we begin to believebecause of God’s proximity to oursenses and we in turn see the truthsof our faith.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ask the children if they know whata “doubting Thomas” is. Point outthat we all have a little of this qualityin us. Have they ever heard the ex-pression—seeing is believing? It’shard to believe in something youcannot see. There are every daythings that we take for grantedwhether we see them or not: gravity,

the sun in the sky, air to breathe, andso on. There is a place in our spiri-tual hearts where it is possible tobelieve things spiritual. If we findthis place we have found a greattreasure house of faith. The Biblepoints out that faith was always in-volved in the miracles performedby Jesus. He would say that yourfaith has healed you. Anne Frank isa great example of unshakeable be-lief in the goodness of humankindeven when her mind and sensestold her the opposite. APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Emphasize that Je-sus came, not merely as a teacher,but to open the door to the kingdomof God, by giving us the new cov-enant: if we love as he does, we willbe with God. A lamb of God fractionrite could be used based on the im-ages from today’s gospel: Jesus thegate, Jesus the shepherd, etc. Butdon’t take the metphor of the sheepand their shepherd too far. Most ofus today have never seen a shep-herd. And, any clergyman whothinks laypeople are sheep is in for apainful epiphany.
