a youth-focused Mass is a vibrant liturgy that speaks to young people and challenges them to live as disciples of Christ. it is not limited to just teenagers; people of all ages can attend a youth Mass. The music, homilies and environment are planned for youth and their families. The energy, reverence and prayerfulness that teens bring to the celebration is contagious.

HomilyWithin a youth-focused Mass, the teens are addressed directly at the homily. The gospel is broken open for the teens explaining how relevant it is for their lives. Teens are drawn to the truth as the homily gives them the truth of our faith. The entire homily does not need to be teen-focused, but even a simple acknowledgement of their presence goes a long way.

Hospitality and InvolvementTeens know from the first time they attend a youth Mass that they are welcome and that this is the place for them. They are greeted, embraced and encouraged. The teens are encouraged to serve in the various liturgical ministries. The teens know that they are a valued and important part of the community.

MusicTeens listen to a great deal of music everyday. although some of it may be objectionable, it is all produced very well and has incredible sound quality. To bring the liturgy to life for teens, youth Masses use musical instruments that teens are used to hearing on a daily basis. The tone must remain prayerful and the music selection should call the congregation into deeper prayer, not distract from it.

you must believe that liturgy can speak to teens. and you must believe that teens are worth speaking and listening to. They are not the Church of tomorrow; they are the Church of today. We must believe in them and in their sincerity. We must talk openly with them about the issues that touch their lives. We must proclaim the truth with love to the teens. good liturgy can and will transform the youth of your parish. Here are some important reminders when building a solid youth-focused Liturgy:

The Liturgy of the Church is Rich. do not mess with the ritual. you do a disservice to the community by breaking the unity of the universal experience of the order and flow of the liturgy. Work at helping teens understand the central elements of liturgy. Try to do everything in the liturgy with excellence, style and grace. Bring out the real elements of the liturgy and place emphasis where it belongs - on the community, the Word, and the eucharist.

Talk to the Teens in the homily, speak about morality, relationships, families, dating, etc. it is wrong for us not to speak about these facets of daily life because teens talk about them often. Teens do not like to be preached at. nobody does. it is never effective to come across sounding condescending. Speaking directly to the teens is an effective way to let young people know they are important and valued. While the entire homily does not have to be directed to the teens, it is vital that the homilist acknowledges their presence.

Don’t Ever Water Down the Gospel Teachings The way to “reach” the teens is not to say what you think they want to hear. Most teens have not been taught the teachings of the Church. They want to know what the Church stands for and what it is exactly that they belong to. We must talk honestly about doctrine, moral issues and prayer.

The Role of MusicMusic is essential; it can draw teens into an experience of true worship. good liturgical music (simple, sing-able, and scriptural) should be chosen. it is important that the music be enriched with instruments, sparked with life and involve the community, not just the musicians.

What is a youth-foCused mass?

Involve the Teens in Liturgical Ministries involvement is the key to the teens taking ownership of the liturgy. Provide opportunities for teens to serve as greeters, lectors, ushers, gift bearers and eucharistic Ministers. give them clear directions, have them practice their ministries, and help them handle their mistakes calmly.

Hospitality Goes a Long Way Take time before Mass for people to greet each other. Create a spirit of hospitality. Welcome visitors. Make certain that the details of hospitality (song sheets, etc.) are available.

Life teenLiturgy pLanning guide

The Mass and the eucharist is the center of the Life Teen ministry. We are committed to helping parishes develop dynamic youth-focused Masses. This resource is part of that commitment. This book contains a guide for each Sunday from the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary time (July 24, 2011) through the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King (november 20, 2011). in each guide there are key words and themes for that Sunday, as well as a reflection on the gospel from the perspective of a teen. These can be used to help focus the liturgy planning meeting and give insight on how to bring the Sunday’s readings to life for teenagers. in addition, each guide contains homily suggestions, Prayers of the faithful suggestions and song suggestions. The celebrant, along with the music minister and liturgist, can use these suggestions to invite people of all ages to fully, consciously and actively participate in the celebration of Holy Mass. finally each guide contains a section called “Liturgy 101.” This small fact about the Mass can be printed on the song sheet or in the bulletin as another opportunity to catechize the teens and their families on the richness of the Catholic Mass.

in order to utilize this resource fully, we encourage that it is shared among the youth minister, music ministers and priests of the parish. While all the suggestions and ideas contained within this book may not work for your parish, we pray that it is helpful in engaging young people (and the entire parish) in the celebration of the Holy Mass. May god bless you in your ministry of leading teens closer to Christ!

although i was not alive when The Second Vatican Council finished in 1965, i have spoken with many people who were active Catholics during that time. They all experienced the changes that took place within the Mass. Many with whom i have talked were very confused when the changes in the liturgy began taking place. Some were told barely anything about what was changing or why it was changing. all of a sudden they experienced a different liturgy and really did not understand why. Some were happy about the changes, and others were not so happy.

first, let me say that the changes we will experience in the liturgy this coming advent of 2011 when the, Roman Missal, Third Edition is implemented do not compare to the changes of Vatican ii. We are not changing the language spoken at Mass, nor are we changing the structure of the Mass. yes, some of the words we sing and speak will change, but they are not sweeping changes-- like the priest facing a different direction. However, it is important to realize that anytime we change something, it is our duty to properly educate the faithful in regards to what is changing and why.

i think you would agree that some people who attend our parishes every Sunday are uneducated about why we celebrate the way we do and why it is of such great importance. if our parishioners all truly saw the Mass as transcending time to the Last Supper, we would never observe people showing up late, leaving early, not singing, chewing gum or even texting and…dare i mention, answering a phone call during Mass.

So, with this new edition of the roman Missal, we are given a great opportunity. Let us take the time to truly educate our communities on the liturgy. Let us make this a time of great renewal in our churches. it can be is really easy to sit back, do nothing and just remain in the day to day, moving from one task to another. nevertheless, we need to start visioning for the future. What can you do to help your assembly better understand the Mass we celebrate?

if you have not started an action plan, now is the time. i would suggest beginning by first educating yourself and some key people in leadership within your parish about the liturgy and what will change. if we do not understand it then how can we expect our community to embrace it? next, i would suggest presenting to your liturgical ministers what the changes are that will be taking place. you might

consider bringing someone who is an expert in liturgy in to speak to your ministers. after they are educated, you can begin to further your action plan to reach the rest of your community.

remember that being positive about the changes will make all the difference. if we take a negative approach to the upcoming Roman Missal, Third Edition and its modifications, it is likely that our community will see it in a negative light. if we make it seem like we are going backwards (which we are not), then that is the only thing that many people will see. if we remain positive and reiterate the fact that the words we speak will more clearly define what we believe and teach and will unite us more closely to the rest of our “universal” Church, then others will embrace the changes in a positive light as well.

We will do our best to try to help you with resources. We will continue to post blogs and resources at www.catholicyouthministry.com to support you and your parishes in this important education process. god bless you all in your endeavor to further liturgical renewal and understanding among all god’s faithful people.

for more information on the changes to the Roman Missal or to see the full side-by-side comparison of the changes, please go online to the uSCCB’s roman Missal page http://www.usccb.org/romanmissal

i get a LOT of questions from musicians who are leading ensembles/bands at different liturgies in their parishes. i thought it might be a good idea to share some of the most common ones here, along with answers that seem to stay consistent from year to year.

Let’s face it– there are new songs being written every day. Some are incredible; some are average; some (like a lot of mine) never make it past the first draft. Still, the library of songs from which we can choose continues to grow leaps and bounds. That’s a great thing! We should celebrate that musicians are being moved by the Holy Spirit to share their gifts. So, how do we comb through all of it and choose what’s right for us? To what degree do we need to keep updating our repertoire?

Tough question. Obviously, we want to keep our music fresh, but not so that people don’t recognize the music when it comes time to sing. Too many new songs at one Mass might be new and “fresh,” but it would also be a lot of unfamiliar music. every song would be a challenge, maybe even intimidating; there would be nothing they knew. People would tend to sing much less.

at the other extreme, never introducing new music would assure the assembly knows the songs, but there is the danger of becoming stale. even the best songs played every week will get old, not to mention the fact that you would be depriving your parish of some wonderful, new music.

So what’s the answer? How much new music should we do at Mass? Only you can answer that question. every parish is different. every music ensemble is different. every liturgy is different. We need to constantly evaluate and re-evaluate how well we are performing our ministries, in this case, music. One suggestion would be to keep an ongoing chart of the songs played at a particular liturgy. every week add a new column with the song titles. This way you can see ‘at a glance’ what songs have been played in recent weeks. also, TaLK TO yOur PariSHiOnerS! Casually ask them

about the music. ask them what they think of the songs. do they feel invited to sing? etc. Keep track of what new songs really stand out; seek out which new songs are the most popular. follow the publisher’s websites: OCP (spiritandsong), WLP, gia, CCLi, etc. Which songs are they highlighting? Which songs get strong reviews? Which songs are consistently listed in the planners? usually, this means the songs are solid, singable, and very usable for liturgy. But, check them out for yourself. Choose the ones that will work well for you. Consider choosing a balance of songs for every liturgy: two solid stand-by’s, something leaning toward traditional, something contemporary, and something new. it’s a start - a rough template to work from. it won’t always work, but it can be a good guide to get you thinking consistently and more balanced.

teens don’t Like oLd songs

hoW muCh neW musiC do you do at your mass?

Well, that’s just a broad, false, statement. The reality is that teens don’t like songs that don’t engage them. No one does. don’t discount a song just because it was written a few (or many) years ago. if the song is a good song…use it…period! in the same way that you like to hear music on the radio that you know…songs that are familiar…songs that remind you…songs that are ‘old’…your assembly will embrace, often with enthusiasm, familiar songs with solid texts and melodies that enhance the liturgy. The challenge is to choose a balance of old and new, familiar and unfamiliar, fast and slow. Make musical decisions; liturgical decisions, not personal ones. remember, the assembly doesn’t think about these songs every day; they hear them once a week. you might think it would be too soon to repeat a song you did last week…but if it was brand new, and it went well, and it could support the liturgy…do it again. They will sing even more.

song, but the assembLy doesn’t seem to be engaged.

Why doesn’t this song seem to be working? you like it, you enjoy playing it, but no one is singing the way you would expect. This is where it gets tough: sometimes we need to evaluate if our performance is affecting the song. TEMpo: are you playing it too fast? Too slow? are you rushing through the rhythms? is the tempo dragging, putting everyone to sleep? Before you start the song, sing through part of it in your head. remember, the vocal part is crucial. Let that determine your tempo. VoCaL sounD anD sTyLE: How we sing or lead certain songs can effect the overall presentation. are you singing a pop-style song with a classical voice? Or are you using too many pop-style ‘licks,’ (turns, scoops, runs, etc.) distorting the melody so that the assembly can’t even recognize it? Or, simply, are you singing out of tune? it’s difficult to sing along with an out-of-tune melody. Setup a video camera and record your group. Listen back and evaluate your performance. HoW Is THE baLanCE of THE InsTRuMEnTs? are the drums too loud? is the piano too soft? Can you hear the singers? Too much guitar? all of these things can affect the overall presentation and invitation to sing. Listen and make appropriate adjustments. as we present and lead music week after week at our liturgies it’s important to constantly evaluate and re-evaluate our music and our musical performance. This is not to simply be critical of ourselves, but rather to be sure we are leading our assemblies the most effective way we can.

Romans 8:28-30Brothers and Sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love god, who are called according to his purpose. for those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. and those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

1 Kings 3:5,7-12The LOrd appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. god said, “ask something of me and i will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O LOrd, my god, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father david; but i am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act. i serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted. give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. for who is able to govern this vast people of yours?”

The LOrd was pleased that Solomon made this request. So god said to him: “Because you have asked for this--not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right--i do as you requested. i give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.”

psalm 119:57,72,76-77,127-128,129-130r: Lord, i love your commands.

i have said, O LOrd, that my partis to keep your words. The law of your mouth is to me more preciousthan thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Let your kindness comfort meaccording to your promise to your servants.Let your compassion come to me that i may live, for your law is my delight.

for i love your commandsmore than gold, however fine.for in all your precepts i go forward;every false way i hate.

Wonderful are your decrees;therefore i observe themThe revelation of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the simple.

Matthew 13:44-52[“Shorter Form” excludes the bracketed text]Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.[again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. “do you understand all these things?” They answered, “yes.” and he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”]

homiLy suggestions

Two things stand out to me about this gospel. first, the Kingdom of Heaven is not easy to attain, but also, the Kingdom of Heaven is more awesomely magnificent and wonderful than we can understand. Pope John Paul ii once said, “do not be satisfied with mediocrity; the Kingdom of Heaven is for those who are determined to enter it.” in this parable, Jesus describes a person who finds a treasure in a field, and a merchant who finds a pearl of great price. neither person was going to be satisfied with mediocrity, because these treasures were worth all their possessions. reflecting on this gospel, i have to ask myself, “am i giving god control of everything? My possessions, my life?” Jesus has told us that the Kingdom of Heaven is worth it. – Kateri, 17

1. for the whole congregation:

in an effort to see how many souls personally applied the truths espoused in the readings, pose a series of rhetorical questions to the faithful gathered there. did they notice (in the 1st reading) what god reiterated was more valuable than earthly wealth? do they think that was because Solomon was already rich or was god saying something far deeper to him (and to us)? did they notice how the gospel required an “action” on each character’s part – one that surpassed just “showing up” (like so many do for Mass)? did they notice the characters’ willingness to be inconvenienced? did they notice their openness to taking risks – not able to purchase something or attain it out of excess – having to risk their earthly security to insure they obtained the greater wealth? do our faith lives demonstrate our desire to do the minimum or an openness to going above and beyond? do we “count the cost” of all we sacrifice for god each day/week or do we calculate the cost of all we’ll miss out on if we don’t abandon earthly securities and seek god with a reckless abandon? is the congregation’s poverty financial or spiritual or both? What are they seeking when they offer their petitions or come forward to receive the eucharist – relief that is earthly or Heavenly?

2. for the teens:

Most teens know that when it comes to reading a treasure map, “X” marks the spot. Most teens do not know, however, that the greek letter Chi is used to spell Christ in greek – nor do many know that Chi looks like an “X” in english. Point out that their presence at Mass is more than a passive thing, but that the very fact that they traveled there to Church shows that – on some level – they are searching for that true treasure, that pearl of great price. remind them that they need look no further than the Sanctuary to find a treasure worth more than any earthly wealth, a treasure that can never be stolen from them and will never lose its worth, its luster or its importance. Point to those people and those signs that the Lord places along the teens’ paths, like a veritable treasure map, guiding them through the dangers and pitfalls of the world to the source of their hearts’ true and greatest desire, the priceless treasure of god’s infinite love.

Romans 8:35, 37-39Brothers and Sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? no in all things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. for i am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of god in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Isaiah 55:1-3Thus says the Lord: all you who are thirsty, come to the water! you who have no money, come, receive grain and eat. Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. i will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to david.

psalm 145:8-9,15-16,17-18r: The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.

The LOrd is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindnessThe LOrd is good to alland compassionate toward all his works.

The eye of all look hopefully to you,and you give them their food in due season;you open your handand satisfy the desire of every living thing

The LOrd is just in all his waysand holy in all his works. The LOrd is near to all who call upon him,to all who call upon him in truth.

Matthew 14:13-21When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over --twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

KEy THEMEs1. god will always provide. Trust that god will give us

what we need.

2. nothing can separate us from god’s love.

3. Our god is a living god who wants to provide for us and fill us with life. When god provides, there is more than enough for us to share with others.

it’s interesting to consider what the twelve disciples were thinking during this gospel. at the beginning, they were probably watching the crowd grow larger and larger, and worrying, “How are they all going to eat?” Then when Jesus told the disciples to feed the crowds themselves, they were probably confused, thinking that Jesus was asking too much of them. as they followed Jesus’ instructions, though, their excitement probably grew quickly: “Whoa, we’re feeding all these people with the little that we had! it’s a miracle!” i think a lot of times we can be like the disciples in this gospel. We watch our problems grow larger, and we think that Jesus has given us too much to handle. We feel like maybe our problems are too big to even let god handle. Jesus tells us, though, “no, listen to me and trust me. i will give you even more than you need—even twelve wicker baskets full.” – Kateri, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

Today’s readings, especially the gospel, speak about god’s provision. for adults, it is often difficult to trust in this provision in the midst of home foreclosures, bankruptcies, unemployment and illness. We are all thirsting for what we have gotten so used to consuming verses thirsting for what god knows we need. romans 8:35 speaks directly to the fear surrounding our trust in god, “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?” even when we read this we see how we live; in anguish, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril and the sword. We must keep our hearts centered on the knowledge that we have a god who will stop at nothing to provide all we need. nothing will separate us from the love of god except our lack of trust and love in Him. The question becomes do we rely on ourselves or on our god.

2. for the teens:

Today’s readings show a very human Christ. after John the Baptist, Christ’s cousin, dies, Christ is moved with sorrow. in the world today, teens deal with a lot of tragedy and often times they don’t know how to cope. The homilist might want to explore the gospel in sections so that teens can understand how Christ calls them to deal with crisis and sorrow.

Matthew 14:13 – Christ withdrewSo often when a teen is faced with a crisis, they remove themselves from community. This is not what Christ was doing here. He was withdrawing for a purpose, to listen to god and allow himself time to mourn the loss of His cousin. Withdrawing is necessary to seek clarity and ask god for physical, emotional, spiritual strength and wisdom. for teens it is important to not stay in an isolated place and seek community after having time with the Lord.

Matthew 14:14 – Christ took pity on the crowd and healed themSo often when tragedy strikes we see only our own sorrow and needs. We fail to see how others are affected by the tragedy and we turn inward. Christ did the opposite; he looked beyond his pain and cured the sick. He saw their need before His own. Teens sometimes make it all about them, and it is important to serve and be served during times of crisis.

Matthew 14:15-18 – be the solution…not the problemin verses 15-16 the disciples realize that a new crisis is forming. There is a crowd and they are hunger. Jesus

instructs the disciples after the complain that there is not enough food to “give them some food yourselves.” god expects us to find a solution by contributing what they have. instead of focusing on what we lack, focus on what god has provided for His will to be done. What we contribute physically (financially) and spiritually (prayer, encouragement, a shoulder to lean on) is often times all someone needs. if a solution is to be found, we must all offer the gifts that we have, the gift’s god provides in us and for us.

Matthew 19 – “bless us o Lord”in this verse Christ doesn’t point out to god the problem, instead his looks to heaven and blesses what god has provided for His children with full trust that god will feed the people. So often our prayer is just telling god what is wrong. do we question that god isn’t aware? This is where we must trust that god will provide in the midst of our suffering and trials.

Matthew 20-21 – satisfaction GuaranteedThese two verses show that god satisfies our every need. encourage your teens to trust in god’s provision, and not just for what they need but for things they don’t even realize they are hungering for. god will provide everything we need to do His will, not ours and god is never outdone in His generosity.

Romans 9: 1-5Brothers and sisters: i speak the truth in Christ, i do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that i have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. for i could wish that i myself were accursed and separated from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, god blessed forever. amen.

1 Kings 19: 9a, 11-13aat the mountain of god, Horeb, elijah came to a cave, where he took shelter. Then the Lord said to him, “go outside and stand on the mountain before the LOrd; the LOrd will be passing by.” a strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LOrd--but the LOrd was not in the wind. after the wind there was an earthquake--but the LOrd was not in the earthquake. after the earthquake there was fire--but the LOrd was not in the fire. after the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

psalm 85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14r: Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salva-tion.

i will hear what god proclaims;the LOrd—for he proclaims peace.near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land.

Kindness and truth shall meet;justice and peace shall kiss.Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven.

The LOrd himself will give his benefits;our land shall yield its increase.Justice shall walk before him,and prepare the way of his steps.

Matthew 14: 22-33 after He had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and precede Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. after doing so, he went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When it was evening He was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. during the fourth watch of the night, He came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea they were terrified. “it is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. at once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is i; do not be afraid.” Peter said to Him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” after they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did Him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of god.”

KEy WoRDsTruTH, Silence, family, Trust, adoption, Salvation

KEy THEMEs1. god speaks to us in the silence. it is in the calmness of

our hearts where god comes and speaks clearly.

2. Jesus Christ is over all, through Him we are god’s adopted children.

3. Trust in Christ to calm our storms. Sometimes we need to step out of the chaos, grab on to Christ and trust in Him. We can conquer all things when we trust in Christ.

i can relate to Peter in this gospel. Very often, i, too, want to do something courageous; step out of the safety of the boat to take a stand and be a witness for Christ. So, like He said to Peter, Christ says to me, “Okay, come,” and He gives me situations where i need to stand up for Him. But then i see how strong the winds are: the people i need to confront or the situation where i need to be a witness, and i’ll take my eyes off of Jesus. and then i’ll sink. i’ll miss my chance to say something or do something that would have witnessed to Christ. yet immediately after that, Jesus will stretch out His hand, catch me, and ask me, “Oh you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Then i’ll realize that all along, i had only needed to keep my eyes on Christ. – Kateri, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

There are many ways that we may identify Jesus. at some times, we see Him as King. Other times we may see Him as our friend. There may be other times when we see Him as helper, healer, or in some other way, but do we ever recognize Jesus as our Savior?

in today’s gospel, Jesus calls Peter to Him, and Peter responds, getting out of the boat and walking on water. How many of us can say we’ve done that? Of course, Peter eventually takes His eyes off of Jesus and begins to sink. But notice, that he doesn’t cry out for Jesus to help him. He doesn’t cry out for Jesus to heal him. He cries out for Jesus to save him, knowing that the most important thing Christ does for us, is bring us salvation. This doesn’t mean that Jesus doesn’t want to help us, heal us, or be our friend, but, above and beyond everything else, He is our Savior.

There may be some of us here who are living in the midst of a storm or difficult time in life. Jesus wants to be your Savior. There may be some of us who are “sitting in the boat” feeling very complacent with our lives and afraid to take on new challenges that god is calling us to. Jesus wants to be your Savior. Still, there may be some here who are basking in the sunshine right now, filled with joy and ecstatic about life. Jesus wants to be your Savior. Why? Quite simply it is because, no matter what, we are all sinners in need of a Savior who walked on this earth and died for our sins not just to help us in this life, but to save us for the next. Take some time this week in prayer and ask Jesus not just to help you or to heal you. ask him to save you. after all, the greatest way He can help you, heal you, or be your friend, is through salvation.

2. for the teens:

depending on your location, your teens may be getting ready to go back to school or at least getting pretty close to the start of a new school year. With so much going on in the life of a typical teenager, this would be a great time to discuss the importance of silence.

in today’s first reading, we hear about elijah who is in search of god. a huge storm comes, followed by an earthquake, and then followed by a fire, but elijah is unable to find the Lord in any of these. it is finally in the quiet whisper, where he hears the voice of god.

as many of you prepare to go back to school in the coming weeks, you will be faced with many challenges. you will have new teachers with new requirements and new

expectations. Some of you will start a new sports’ season that requires proper practice and preparation for your upcoming games or meets. Still there may be some of you who will join a new club, make new friends, or spend time deepening the relationships you already have. There will be a variety of adventures and in the midst of that comes busyness. While busyness may not necessarily look the same as a huge storm, earthquake, or fire, it can still prevent us from hearing the voice of god if we allow it to. as you prepare for this new school year, it’s important to remember that we all need to take time to hear god’s voice, especially in the silence, so that we don’t get distracted by the busyness that surrounds our daily lives. Try taking just 10 minutes a day or more and find a prayerful place to be in silence or visit our adoration Chapel to be in the presence of the Lord who desperately wants you to know His love and peace working in your life. The more we allow god to penetrate our hearts through the silence, the more we will be able to hear His call for us and follow His will more closely in our lives.

Romans 11: 13-15, 29-32Brothers and sisters: i am speaking to you gentiles. inasmuch then as i am the apostle to the gentiles, i glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. for if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? for the gifts and the call of god are irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed god but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. for god delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

Isaiah 56:1, 6-7Thus says the LOrd: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice about to be revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the LOrd, ministering to him, loving the name of the LOrd, and becoming his servants - all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them i will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

psalm 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8r: O god, let all the nations praise you!

May god have pity on us and bless us;may he let his face shine upon us.So may your way be known upon earth;among all nations, your salvation.

May the nations be glad and exultbecause you rule the peoples in equity;the nations on the earth you guide.

May the peoples praise you, O god;may all the peoples praise you!May god bless us,and may all the ends of the earth fear him!

Matthew 15: 21-28at that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. and behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of david! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked Him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “i was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” and her daughter was healed from that hour.

KEy WoRDsOBSerVe, reconciliation, acceptance, Obedience, Mercy, faith.

KEy THEMEs1. do good; avoid evil.

2. god is all merciful to those who repent from their disobedience.

3. god’s gifts are irrevocable.

in this reading, Jesus wanted to test the woman’s faith and show the disciples a valuable lesson. When the disciples asked Jesus to send her away, they simply didn’t know what or didn’t want to do anything with the woman. Sometimes at school, kids cry out in their own ways when life is too much. They cry out and yet no one listens. Some people pretend that you’re not there or sometimes people simply don’t know what to do so they do nothing. “it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” Jesus said this to the woman as a test of her faith.

“Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” The woman believed if even a very tiny portion of Jesus’ blessing would heal her daughter. She had great faith and that very faith reminded me of when Jesus said that “faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains.”

Sometimes we feel like giving up when we feel like no one will listen but god is always there, and He always hears you. even though she wasn’t heard, she believed that god would listen to her, causing her to be blessed. as Christians, we sometimes do not hear or seem to listen to those crying out. it is our job to try to listen to those needing it.– Joseph, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

use these reading to draw out the concept that we often put limits on god’s love and power. Often we will judge and decide who is “worthy” of god’s favor. We can write off coworkers, family members, people we see in the media, and sometimes even ourselves as being “beyond” the mercy of god. Many of us have become so good at judging and labeling that we do it without thinking. We can even do it here at Church; we see someone and wonder, “what are they doing here?” in all four Scripture readings, we are told that salvation is for all nations, not just for the Jews. This was a revolutionary concept for the early Church. Samarians and gentiles were considered outcasts in the Jewish mind. in the first reading, the Lord says through the prophet isaiah that all those who follow god’s commands will be welcomed into god’s house. in the second reading, St. Paul reflects on his mission to preach the gospel to the gentiles. His desire is that all people, Jews and gentiles, would accept the salvation won for them by Christ. in the gospel, the woman who approached Jesus was undoubtedly judged by the rest of the crowd, even the apostles told Jesus to send her away. Make the connection for the congregation between the readings and how we view others. god’s mercy is inexhaustible and we are called to extend that same mercy and compassion to others. Obviously, god is the only one who will love perfectly – but we cannot allow ourselves to give into the temptation to judge and “define” those around us.

2. for the teens:

Start the homily by asking the teens to think of a time when they had to ask for help. Maybe it was with a tough class, or getting used to a new school. Many of us don’t like to ask for help because it shows weakness or we are not sure how it will be received. Think about how the woman in the gospel felt. Her daughter was sick and she had nowhere else to turn. She cried out to Jesus even though as a woman and a Canaanite, she had no right to speak to Jesus. you might think that Jesus’ response to her was harsh, but the opposite is true. He used her courage to ask for help as an opportunity to reveal that god’s salvation is for all people. Her humility and persistency paved the way for the miraculous healing of her daughter. are there areas in your life in which you hesitate to ask for god’s help? Why?

are there things that you think are beyond god’s mercy and healing? Why? god is showing us in this gospel that god desires for us to be whole and holy. He is waiting for us to ask. We might not like the immediate response, but like

Romans 11:33-36Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of god! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! “for who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid?” for from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. amen.

Isaiah 22: 19-23Thus says the Lord to Shebna, master of the palace: “i will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station. On that day i will summon my servant eliakim, son of Hilkiah; i will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. i will place the key of the House of david on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut; when he shuts, no one shall open. i will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family.”

psalm 138: 1-2, 2-3, 6, 8r: Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the works of your hands.

i will give thanks to you, O LOrd, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth;in the presence of he angels i will sing your praise;i will worship at your holy temple.

i will give thanks to your name, because of your kindness and your truth:when i called, you answered me;you built up strength within me.

The LOrd is exalted, yet the lowly he sees, and the proud he knows from afar.your kindness, O LOrd, endures forever;forsake not the works of your hands.

Matthew 16:13-20 Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and He asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that i am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “you are the Christ, the Son of the living god.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly father. and so i say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock i will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. i will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

key Words & themes

KEy WoRDsHuMiLiTy, Wisdom, Knowledge, Blessings, Love

KEy THEMEs1. True authority comes only from god.

2. We are limited and god is infinite, we cannot know the mind of god.

3. Jesus hands His ministry to Peter, calling him the rock upon which the Church will be built. apostolic succession is established, and the apostles and those who succeed them are given the ministry to bind and loose sins.

The question that Jesus poses is interesting. it isn’t as if He doesn’t know who people think He is. He points out an interesting distinction that we can still see in our world today. The world may see Jesus and religion as many different things. We as Christians are god’s people, though, and He turns to us as Jesus turned to His disciples and calls us to see who He really is. He is an amazing god of never ending mercy and love, who knows every crevice of every person and who died so we may have eternal life with Him in Heaven. if we, as Simon Peter did, answer His call and recognize that He is the Christ, the Son of the living god, then we will be rewarded. Peter became the first pope in exchange for his great faith and we, the faithful, will have unending treasures waiting for us in the kingdom of Heaven if we see Jesus for who He really is and not what the world tells us. – McKenzie, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

in today’s gospel, Jesus asks the disciples, “Who do you say that i am?” While Peter is the only one we hear respond, it’s important to note that Peter wasn’t the only one for whom this question was intended. in fact, neither were the disciples. Jesus wants to know our answer to this question as well. So, how does each of us here today respond?

as we think about our responses, we must remember that it’s not only our words that Jesus wants to hear. He wants our lives and desires that our response come not just in the words we speak, but in the way we live. While Jesus does not call us to perfection in this life, He does want us to grow in holiness, and therefore we should strive to ensure that our entire lives reflect that “He is the Christ, the Son of the living god.” With that mind, perhaps Jesus is asking us today, “Who do you say that i am when you’re at work? Who do you say that i am when you’re stuck in traffic? Who do you say that i am when you’re at school, on the internet, or out at a restaurant?”

Being a Catholic is more than who we say Jesus is when we are in Church. it’s about who we say that He is in every aspect of our lives. Let us strive, through the grace of the Sacraments and prayer, to continue to grow as Christ calls us to that we may reflect His love to all we encounter.

2. for the teens:

in today’s gospel we hear about the great responsibility given to Peter as Jesus tells him, “...upon this rock i will build my church” and “i will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.” This could be a great Sunday to share with the teens about the priesthood and what a great calling and responsibility it is. Take time to share your testimony as to how you heard god’s call for you to the priesthood and why you said yes. you could also share with them some of the great responsibilities that you have as priest (saying Mass, visiting the sick, listening to confessions) and how you get to be a part of some important milestones in people’s lives (Baptism, first eucharist, Weddings). This could also be a great opportunity to share about religious life or the diaconate as well. above all, be sure to challenge the teens to pray about their vocation and where god may be calling them as they continue to grow in their faith.

Romans 12:1-2i urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of god, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to god, your spiritual worship. do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of god, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

Jeremiah 20:7-9you duped me, O LOrd, and i let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. all the day i am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me. Whenever i speak, i must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; the word of the LOrd has brought me derision and reproach all the day. i say to myself, i will not mention him, i will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; i grow weary holding it in, i cannot endure it.

psalm 63:2, 3-4,5-6,8-9r: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my god

O god, you are my god whom i seek;for you my flesh pines and my soul thirstslike the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.

Thus have i gazed toward you in the sanctuaryto see your power and your glory, for your kindness is a greater good than life;my lips shall glorify you.

Thus will i bless you while i live;lifting up my hands, i will call upon your name.as with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.

you are my help, and in the shadow of your wings i shout for joy.My soul clings fast to you;your right hand upholds me.

Matthew 16:21-27Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “god forbid, Lord! no such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “get behind me, Satan! you are an obstacle to me. you are thinking not as god does, but as human beings do.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? for the Son of Man will come with his angels in his father’s glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct.

key Words & themes

KEy WoRDsgLOry, Sacrifice, Holiness, Offering, desires, Perseverance

KEy THEMEs1. The desire to proclaim the good news is in the fiber of

our being. even though we may choose to be silent, the desire still burns within us to proclaim god’s goodness.

2. discernment of the will of god is not of this world. We are called not to conform but to transform.

3. Christ calls us to deny ourselves, to not be selfish, and to pick up our crosses and follow Him. god will always provide as a loving father provides for his family.

When Jesus says to Peter, “get behind me, Satan!” He is not calling Peter Satan. instead, he is recognizing the struggle that we as humans must fight between what is right and what is wrong. Satan does his work through us when we sin and Christ does His work through us when we love. Sometimes it’s easier to sin than to love, but Jesus recognizes that as well and gives us such powerful words of wisdom to live by. in order to live the Christian life that we are all called to, we must live our lives for the One who died for us. it may be full of sorrows and suffering. We may have to deny our friends who want to take us out to bad parties or our family members who don’t want us to be so involved with the Church because they don’t understand, but “he will repay everyone according to his conduct.” On this day, let us truly lose ourselves in god and forfeit our lives to Him because that is how we will find eternal life. – McKenzie, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

The Homilist could choose to present that in the gospel today it is clear that Jesus restores to perfection the purity of god’s Law over any other. in doing so, He calls us to protect the Laws and the Traditions of the Church. The true way will be having a true conversion of heart where we are convinced that the Catholic Church brings us one faith. faith gives us salvation and eternal life. all people of every age and culture need traditions as part of their lives; this gives them good roots and security in their life. But they want to know the reason for those traditions and the uses in their lives. This is the perfect day to explain some of the Traditions of the Catholic Church and why (for example: Holy Water, Candles, Colors of Seasons, etc…)

2. for the teens:

i don’t know about y’all, but it seems to me that more and more i am constantly being asked to take sides on things. Which football team do i like more, or where do want to sit, “smoking or nonsmoking,” or who’s right in this argument or that and i’m sure the list could go on and on. Today’s gospel is also seeking for us to make a choice... are we going to god or the world (are we “judging by god’s standards” or “by man’s”). Today Christ is asking us, whether we are still in our teens or in our nineties, to take a stand with Him. He’s asking us be with Him when times are good and we feel comfortable with our relationship with god. He’s also asking to stay by Him when we may fall into unpopularity for professing our beliefs, or when we lack the courage to trust in god at any given moment. We must be willing to become a laughing stock to the world (and sometimes to ourselves) just like Jeremiah in the first reading, and still be firm in our choice to be convicted for Christ.

ask your teens these questions:

• Whose side are you on?• god’s or your own?• god’s or the world’s?• god’s or your family’s, your friends? We must be for god and never let anything get in the way of that, as St. Paul says, “do not conform yourself to this age, but be transformed.” each new day should be a time of deeper transformation into the person god is ever calling us to be. The old slogan “god is my copilot,” is simply not the whole truth. if we are to truly choose god’s way over any other, then it must mean that god is our Pilot, because once

Romans 13:8-10Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “you shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

Ezekiel 33:7-9Thus says the Lord: you, son of man, i have appointed watchman for the house of israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me. if i tell the wicked, “O wicked one, you shall surely die,” and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked from his way, the wicked shall die for his guilt, but i will hold you responsible for his death. But if you warn the wicked, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses to turn from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself.

psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9r: if today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Come, let us sing joyfully to the LOrd;let us acclaim the rock of our salvation.Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;let us joyfully sing psalms to him.

Come let us bow down in worship;let us kneel before the LOrd who made us.for he is our god,and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.

Oh, that today you would hear his voice:“Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,as in the day of Massah in the desert, where your fathers tempted me;they tested me though they had seen my works.”

Matthew 18:15-20Jesus said to his disciples: “if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault is between you and him alone. if he listens to you, you have won over your brother. if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ if he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. if he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a gentile or a tax collector. amen, i say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. again, amen, i say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly father. for where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am i in the midst of them.”

key Words & themes

KEy WoRDsLOVe, forgiveness, repentance, amends, Presence, Justice, relationships

KEy THEMEs1. “Love is the fulfillment of the Law.”

2. Prevent the continuation of wickedness. forgive others first.

3. Wherever two or three are gathered in the name of Christ, He is present with them.

What struck me in this gospel reading was the persistence of forgiveness that we must seek from our ‘brother’. When someone has hurt us or sinned against us, we must always try to make amends through love. even if they refuse to hear what we have to say, we must try again. if it gets to a point where we’ve done the best we can and no reconciliation has occurred, we must give the situation back to the Lord. in this gospel, i feel the Lord challenge me to be more persistent at seeking and giving forgiveness to those who have hurt me, even if they don’t want to accept it. – Joseph, 16

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

Often new pastors are given “helpful hints” from their new parishioners. Some of them have good ideas, like make sure you smile and try to get to know as many names as you can, or try not to talk about money too much. However, sometimes the pastors get more interesting “helpful hints.” Here’s a story about that: The new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. He took out one of his cards and wrote “Revelation 3:20” on the back and stuck it in the door. Now, Revelation 3:20 reads, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” When the following Sunday came along, one of his ushers came up to him and handed a small piece of paper to him which had this cryptic message written on it, “Dear Father, what a very nice gesture you made in coming to my home this past week, but ‘Genesis 3:10’.”

He took the note back home with him and found his Bible to check out the reference, When he read it he broke up in gales of laughter. The house keeper came running in at the sound of the laughter and he handed her the note and the Bible. She read the note then read out loud the words from Genesis 3:10, “I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.” The new pastor decided to call ahead from then on before visiting any more homes. The Homilist may want to close by reminding the congregation to be safe this Labor day week and in case anyone needs a little help with the directions, leave them with this hint, John 14:6.

2. for the teens:

What do we do with our lives? it’s a constant theme heard in the Christian life. The theme of how and for what and for whom we must live is the theme of the Scriptures. and, the best part is that the answer is there, too. We live to love god and neighbor, friend and foe alike. This is any opportunity for you to challenge your teens to make their lives examples of love and forgiveness. in short, the homilist may want to challenge the teens make their lives examples of Christ. gently push them to dig deeper into their faith, and look at those areas of their lives that still don’t reflect Christ.

Romans 14:7-9Brothers and sisters: none of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. for if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. for this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

sirach 27:30-28:9Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. The vengeful will suffer the LOrd’S vengeance, for he remembers their sins in detail. forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Should a man nourish anger against his fellows and expect healing from the LOrd? Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself, can he seek pardon for his own sins? if one who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins? remember your last days, set enmity aside; remember death and decay, and cease from sin! Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor; remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults.

psalm 103:1-2, 3-4, 9-10, 11-12r: The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger and rich in compassion.

Bless the LOrd, O my soul;and all my being bless his holy name.Bless the LOrd, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills. He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion

He will not always chide, nor does he keep his wrath forever.not according to our sins does he deal with us,nor does he requite us according to our crimes.

for as the heavens are high above the earth,so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him. as far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our transgressions from us.

Matthew 18:21-35Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must i forgive him? as many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “i say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. at that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and i will pay you back in full.’ Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and i will pay you back.’ But he refused. instead, he had him put in prison until he paid back the debt. now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, ‘you wicked servant! i forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as i had pity on you?’ Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly father do to you, unless each of you forgives his brother from his heart.”

KEy THEMEs1. We all have faults, no one has the right or privilege to

judge, we are called out of love to overlook the faults of others. Vengeance belongs only to god.

2. Christ is Lord of the living and the dead. He defeats death.

3. We are to go out of our way to forgive. forgiveness begets forgiveness. as we ask our father to forgive us, we are to give those who have sinned against us mercy. forgiveness is an act of the heart.

One of the biggest struggles teens face is learning to forgive. Too many of us hold on to grudges, but expect our wrongdoings to be forgotten immediately. Hypocritically, we take god’s mercy for granted. We forget god’s directions amid the ever-present drama of a high school setting. Then after all the cattiness, we turn to Christ knowing he’ll forgive us. Our actions never change, though. We fall into an angry rut of stubbornness, not realizing the gravity of our actions in god’s eyes. – stephanie, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

The Homilist may want to begin by pointing out that in our society, we put labels on the things that we value: our clothes, our Cds, dVds, books, even our facebook status labels us. everything we buy even has a company name or logo on it. Spend a few moments to talk about some different examples of logos, brand names, and things we do in the world to label ourselves.

remind your congregation that god has claimed us as His own and has put His ‘label on us.’ We even symbolize this in our Baptismal ritual when our parents and godparents make the sign of the cross on our forehead. We belong to Him. So, how will the world know it, how will god’s label on us be seen?

2. for the teens:

Today we read in the Scriptures that, “none of us lives as their own master and none of us dies as their own master.” St. Paul’s words are so true, and yet most of us struggle with that thought. We’d all love to love god more, but it sometimes seems so hard to do it in our daily lives. if he’d would like, the Homilist might want to try using a story like this one to help illustrate the point.

There once was an older priest who had been called out to anoint a man at the request of his daughter. When the he arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows. An empty chair sat beside his bed. The priest assumed that the old man had been told of his visit and set a chair out for him to sit on. “I guess you were expecting me,” he said.

“No, Father, but I’m glad you’re here,” said the man.

“Well, I saw the empty chair, and I figured you knew I was going to show up.”

“Oh, the chair,” said the man. “I’ll tell you about the chair, but would you mind closing the door first?”

Puzzled, the minister shut the door.

“I have never told anyone this, not even my daughter,” said the man. “But all of my life I have never known how to pray. At church I used to hear the priests talk about prayer, but it went right over my head. I abandoned any attempt at prayer,” the old man continued, “until one day four years ago my best friend said to me, ‘prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus.

prayers of faithfuL

1. Let us pray for the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness especially when we are unmerciful, angry or wrathful.

2. Let us pray for the strength to forgive others, as well as ourselves.

3. Let us pray for peace among nations and an end to war.

Here is what I suggest. Sit down in a chair, place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It’s not spooky because He promised he’ll be with you always. Then just speak to Him in the same way you’re doing with anybody else.’ So, I tried it and I’ve liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I’m careful though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she’d either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm.”

The priest was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the old man to continue on the journey. Then he prayed with him, anointed him with oil, and returned to the church. Two days later the daughter stopped by the rectory to tell the priest that her father had passed away earlier that afternoon.

“Did he die in peace?” the priest asked.

“Yes, I believe he did. Right before I left the house this morning, my father called me over to his bedside, told me he loved me and kissed me on the cheek. And then he said, “You know He said, ‘I’ll be with you always.’ When I got back from the store, I found him dead. But apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on the chair beside the bed. What do you make of that?”

The priest simply wiped a tear from his eye and smiled.

philippians 1:20c-24, 27aBrothers and sisters: Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. for to me life is Christ, and death is gain. if i go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. and i do not know which i shall choose. i am caught between the two. i long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. yet that i remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Isaiah 55:6-9Seek the LOrd while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked man his thoughts; let him turn to the LOrd for mercy; to our god, who is generous in forgiving. for my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LOrd. as high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.

psalm 145:2-3, 8-9, 17-18r: The Lord is near to all who call upon him

every day will i bless you, and i will praise your name forever and ever.great is the LOrd and highly to be praised;his greatness is unsearchable.

The LOrd is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LOrd is good to alland compassionate toward all his works.

The LOrd is just in all his waysand holy in all his worksThe LOrd is near to all who call upon him,to all who call upon him in truth.

Matthew 20:1-16aJesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. after agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. going out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘you too go into my vineyard, and i will give you what is just.’ So they went off. and he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. going out about five o’clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘you too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. and on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, i am not cheating you. did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if i wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am i not free to do as i wish with my own money? are you envious because i am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

key Words & themes

KEy WoRDsMerCy, death, Life, generosity, Love, Justice.

KEy THEMEs1. Mercy is given to all who seek the Lord.

2. We live our lives with heaven as the goal. Our lives should reflect the gospel message.

3. god’s justice is one of generosity. god’s generous mercy is not ours to judge, even if it seems unfair.

Today’s society has trained me to understand the best workers receive the greatest things in life. The students who study the hardest get the best grades, the athletes who train the longest win the races, and the leaders who are the most involved get the most recognition. However, in reality god loves all his children equally no matter their achievements. accepting failure by the world’s standards is difficult; fortunately the Lord does not base his judgments on what the world believes. He wants humility and obedience. although living out these teachings is not easy, it is worth the reward of heaven. – stephanie, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

The Homilist this week may want to tell this example or a like-minded incident:

every once in a while it seems that everyone you know-- family members, friends, people at work, almost all married people in your life-- starts having babies. now don’t get me wrong, i think that’s great. i love watching them go through the stages of the initial joy of realizing they’re about to bring new life into the world and how that joy moves to expectation of what their little baby will be like, then how that changes into that anxious little feeling parents get right before the baby is born... a feeling that speaks in their heads, “do you realize that you’re going to be responsible for a human life?” i just sit back and enjoy the whole journey with them. Then the day comes and the baby is born and is welcomed into the family and the real fun starts, especially if there are other children. eventually there comes that point in every family when one child will feel that one of the other children is “loved more” or “you like them better than me!” They think the other child always gets “their way” and that the other child has a more special place in the parents’ hearts. But that is not the reality is it? The reality is that parents love all their children and share that love equally, right? Today we are reminded in the Scriptures that god’s love for us is truly unconditional. Whether we come to Him right away and spend our lives in His service or whether we come to Him later in life, god loves each of us unconditionally. no matter what the case, whether it be the morning of life, the noontime or the evening of our lives when we finally embrace god’s presence, His love will be there waiting to receive us.

2. for the teens:

The Homilist may want to remind the people that today’s gospel is encouraging us to realize that we do not have the right to make either judgments or comparisons in the realm of spiritual affairs.

it would be easy for us to say that our lives can often become unfair or unjust. Christ’s response to that kind of thinking is, “no, hold on a minute!” We only see it as unfair or unjust because our ways are not his ways. What the Lord sees in the late conversion of someone who had been far from Him for perhaps quite a long time is the response to a graced moment. a graced moment can come at the birth of a child, or at the death of a loved one. a graced moment

can come when a major decision is to be made, or when a person feels the need to change his or her lifestyle. The Lord is concerned that we respond to His call of grace. He is not concerned with that which happened before the response. There is mercy, compassion and forgiveness for the past. The rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water is used most commonly during the easter season as a reminder of our baptism. during the rite, the priest and deacon move through the church sprinkling all the people with holy water. Once the people are blessed, they make the Sign of the Cross.

philippians 2:20-25[“Shorter Form” excludes the bracketed text]Brothers and sisters: if there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others. Have in you the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, [who, though he was in the form of god, did not regard equality with god something to be grasped. rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Because of this, god greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of god the father.]

Ezekiel 18:25-28Thus says the LOrd: you say, “The LOrd’s way is not fair!” Hear now, house of israel: is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? When someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die. But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed, and does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life; since he has turned away from all the sins which he committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

psalm 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9r: remember your mercies, O Lord.

your ways, O LOrd, make known to me;teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me,for your are god my savior.

remember that your compassion, O LOrd,and your love are from of old.The sins of my youth and my frailties remember not;in your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O LOrd.

good and upright is the LOrd;thus he shows sinners the way.He guides the humble to justice,he teaches the humble his way.

Matthew 21:28-32Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: “What is your opinion? a man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘i will not,’ but afterwards he changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “amen, i say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of god before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.”

key Words & themes

KEy WoRDsVirTue, unity, Selflessness, Humility, Obedience, righteousness, repentance

KEy THEMEs1. as mere humans it is difficult for us to the grasp god’s

justice; His ways, many times are not our ways (and praise god for that).

2. We gain life when we turn our back on sin and instead seek virtue. Humility is a virtue we are to seek and live to be one with Christ.

3. Christ is obedient to His father’s will, emptying Himself and becoming human. in this humility god now exalts Jesus, who is One with Him.

4. if we wish to gain everlasting life, we are to believe in the One who does the father’s will.

in the parable of the two sons, not only is Our Lord speaking to the Pharisees, He is clearly speaking to each one of us, even in this modern society, two thousand years later. There are so many people in the world today that act like the Pharisees, appearing on the outside to live a good life, while on the inside they are full of pride, hate, lies and deceit. all of us have gone through a time in our lives when we act like the second son who told his father that he would work, but when the time came, refused to do so. This gospel challenges each one of us to make amends in our ways, like the tax collectors and harlots. Jesus said thy would enter the kingdom of Heaven before the Pharisees because they were humble enough to recognize their mistakes and willing to listen to Jesus’ teachings. Like the son who said he would not work in the field and then repented for not obeying his father, we too must convert in this way. Through this gospel, Jesus challenges us to reform and do what is right, however hard it may be. – Claire, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

The Homilist may want to begin by suggesting the following or similar idea to your congregation.

When we were younger, many of us learned the “act of Contrition.” in it, we were taught to pray: “i firmly resolve with the help of thy grace to sin no more and to avoid what ever leads me to sin.” That is a powerfully challenging statement, one that is difficult to live up to, yet it is closely linked to this Sunday’s theme. We need to repent from our sinful ways. We need to choose to do so. if you find it helpful, you may want to pray the entire “act of Contrition” with the assembly. you might even print it on small laminated cards and give it to the people as they leave Mass that day to serve as a constant reminder of the Sacrament of reconciliation.

2. for the teens:

Today we are challenged to say “yes” to god and “no” to a life of sin. it’s easy for us to say we believe in Christ and His teachings, but it’s also sometimes just as easy to act as if we had no idea what those teachings of Christ are. Sometimes we say “yes” only on the outside, but don’t commit to the “yes” on the inside. To be committed means to have Christ’s attitude... total self-giving and obedience to the father’s will. in other words, our “yes” cannot be said only in words, but through the way we live our lives. for example, when a man and woman say “yes” before the altar in the covenant of marriage, their lives must proclaim that love. They no longer focus on themselves, but they show their love for their spouse with every breath they take. in the same way, saying “yes” to god’s love, must change everything about us... it must change our focus. So often we can only be focused on the present moment or the task at hand, and we can find it hard to see how our actions affect world around us. This is especially true in the world of your teens, where everything is about the immediacy of the moment. Push them to become more aware of their actions and the consequences of those actions, to become in tune with what “yes” can mean. after all, god Himself did it. He kept true to Himself and sent His only Son to live, die and be resurrected all for us. “So every knee must bend in the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth and every tongue proclaim to the glory of god the father: JeSuS CHriST iS LOrd!”

philippians 4:6-9Brothers and sisters: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to god. Then the peace of god that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the god of peace will be with you.

Isaiah 5:1-7 Let me now sing of my friend, my friend’s song concerning his vineyard. My friend had a vineyard on a fertile hillside; he spaded it, cleared it of stones, and planted the choicest vines; within it he built a watchtower, and hewed out a wine press. Then he looked for the crop of grapes, but what it yielded was wild grapes.

now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah judge between me and my vineyard: what more was there to do for my vineyard that i had not done? Why, when i looked for the crop of grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes? now, i will let you know what i mean to do to my vineyard: take away its hedge, give it to grazing, break through its wall, let it be trampled!

yes, i will make it a ruin: it shall not be pruned or hoed, but overgrown with thorns and briers; i will command the clouds not to send rain upon it. The vineyard of the LOrd of hosts is the house of israel, and the men of Judah are his cherished plant; He looked for judgment, but see, bloodshed! for justice, but hark, the outcry!

psalm 80: 9, 12, 13-14,15-16,19-20r: The vineyard of the Lord is the house of israel

a vine from egypt you transplanted;you drove away the nations and planted it.it put forth its foliage to the Sea,it shoots as far as the river.

Why have you broken down its walls,so that every passer-by plucks its fruit, the boar from the forest lays it waste, and the beasts of the field feed upon it?

Once again, O LOrd of hosts, look down from heaven, and see;Take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted, the son of man whom you yourself made strong.

Matthew 21:33-43Jesus said to the chief priest and the elders of the people: “Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’ They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?” They answered him; “He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times.” Jesus said to them, “did you never read in the scriptures: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes’?

responsoriaL psaLm

Then we will no more withdraw from you;give us new life, and we will call upon your name.O LOrd, god of hosts, restore us;if your face shine upon us, then we shall be saved.

key Words & themes

KEy WoRDsJuSTiCe, Prayer, Thanksgiving, Peace, inheritance, fruitfulness

KEy THEMEs1. Have no anxiety but seek god and you will find peace.

2. in experiencing rejection we gain a unity with god’s only Son, Jesus Christ. god builds upon those who experience rejection because of their loyalty to god.

The gospel this week reminds me that my faith alone does not bear fruit for the Kingdom of god. To say that i am a follower of Christ means that i must live the call that god has placed on my life, even right now. When i am doing His will, there will be fruit. When i’m doing my will, there won’t be fruit. even in the face of rejection and opposition, i must persist in my efforts to live as a child of god and be a witness to His love. – ashley, 15

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

Vineyards give us grapes, raisins and wine. Vineyards at the time of Jesus were therefore very important in people’s lives. Caring for a vineyard was a full time commitment. The Scriptures today remind us of the need for a fertile hillside, spading the soil and the clearing of stones before planting. a winepress would also need to be dug. a vineyard also had to be protected from predators or theft by a hedge and a watchtower. all of these things needed to be maintained for the vineyard.

The Scriptures today portray the people of god as either the vineyard or as its tenants. as His vineyard, god has provided us with his protection. as tenants in His vineyard, we share in the responsibility of caring for others.

during the “Our father” at Mass, the priest prays “and protect us from all anxiety.” When we act like those tenants in the gospel by trying to override and control what god has given, instead of participating in that grace, we cause anxiety. Participating in His vineyard of grace makes us thankful for the Lord’s protection.

2. for the teens:

Have a teen come up, sit in a chair, and look like they are checking their facebook account. Have a core member/ parent walk up and say, “Stop checking your friends facebook status, or you’ll be late for school.” Then, have that same teen pretend they’re texting and have someone dressed as a teacher walks up and say, “Stop texting and pay attention, you were already late for class.” Then have another teen sit in a chair next to them while the teen pretends to text while driving. Have the passenger say, “Thanks to your detention, we’re late to practice.” Then they crash.

Like the teen who would not stop what they are doing to pay attention, so the tenants in the gospel refused to hear god’s message. first there were the early prophets, then the late prophets and finally Jesus himself. instead, all their attention was on getting more. This preoccupation was so much so that they did not realize they were endangering their own lives. Jesus is the life saving message.

Therefore, i say to you, the kingdom of god will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.

Isaiah 25: 6-10a On this mountain the LOrd of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord gOd will wipe away the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LOrd has spoken. On that day it will be said: “Behold our god, to whom we looked to save us! This is the LOrd for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!” for the hand of the LOrd will rest on this mountain.

psalm 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6r: i shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

The Lord is my shepherd; i shall not want. in verdant pastured he gives me repose;beside restful waters he leads me;He refreshes my soul.

He guides me in right pathsfor his name’s sake. even though i walk in the dark valleyi fear no evil; for you are at my sideWith your rod and staffthat give me courage.

you spread the table before mein the sight of my foes;you anoint my head with oil;my cup overflows.

Only goodness and kindness follow meall the days of my life;and i shall dwell in the house of the LOrdfor years to come.

Matthew 22:1-14[“Shorter Form” excludes the bracketed text]Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. a second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, i have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, “The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. [But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. The King said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”]

philippians 4:12-14, 19-20Brothers and sisters: i know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; i know also how to live with abundance. in every circumstance and in all things i have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. i can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. My god will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our god and father, glory forever and ever. amen.

KEy THEMEs1. god gives salvation to those who believe in Him.

2. god supplies all we need.

3. We are invited to attend the great banquet god has prepared for us. are we prepared to enter the banquet.

4. There is punishment for those who reject or are not prepared to accept god’s invitation.

“‘My friend how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence.” (Matthew 22:12) How many times do we go to Mass and see people in their pajamas, sport apparel, or sadly women dressed in what looks like nightclub apparel? i’m afraid we see this happen but are usually reduced to silence. Let’s be the voice of truth the next time we’re at mass (a.k.a the wedding feast). Let us be appropriately dressed to receive our bridegroom Jesus, in the Holy Sacrament of the eucharist! – Marisa, 15

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

Weddings are like funerals, they bring out the very best and the very worst in people. isaiah has the image of a mountain top banquet linked with the Lord destroying death and reproach being removed from the earth. The image of a wedding banquet is often used to portray the kingdom of heaven because wedding banquets are usually joyful occasions.

Weddings bring out the worst when people focus on the day rather than the couple or the marriage. Weddings bring out the best when the couple wants the wedding to begin their married life participating in god’s plan for them. funerals bring out the best when there is gratitude and respect for that life. funerals bring out the worst when a life does not seem prepared to meet god. are we prepared for the banquet of the Mass? To meet god? The wedding garment is symbol of our life of faith. Put on Christ to always be prepared.

2. for the teens:

Hold up a printed e-vite and say that you were invited to a birthday party but everyone had to wear black. fortunately as a priest that was no problem. There was lots of food and fun until someone came in wearing all yellow. everyone kind of stared for a moment. Then when the person was given a black shirt, they threw it down and were then asked to leave. it was a fun party (hold up a “Thank you” note), so i have to thank my friend for inviting me.

Philippians is St. Paul’s “thank you note” for their responding to his needs and for inviting Christ Jesus into their lives. Jesus is inviting us to be a part of His kingdom. right now that invitation leads to the Banquet of the altar and the Banquet of Heaven. How will we respond?

1 Thessalonians 1:1-5bPaul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in god the father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace. We give thanks to god always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our god and father, knowing, brothers and sisters loved by god, how you were chosen. for our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit with much conviction.

Isaiah 45:1, 4-6Thus says the LOrd to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand i grasp, subduing nations before him, and making kings run in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: for the sake of Jacob, my servant, of israel my chosen one, i have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. i am the LOrd and there is no other, there is no god besides me. it is i who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. i am the LOrd, there is no other.

psalm 96:1, 3, 4-5, 7-8, 9-10r: give the Lord glory and honor.

Sing to the Lord a new song;sing to the LOrd, all your lands.Tell his glory among the nations;among all the peoples, his wondrous deeds.

for great is the LOrd and highly to be praised;awesome is he, beyond all gods.for all the gods of the nations are things of nought, but the LOrd made the heavens.

give to the LOrd, you families of nations, give to the LOrd glory and praise;give to the LOrd the glory due his name!Bring gifts, and enter his courts.

Worship the LOrd in holy attire.Tremble before him, all the earth;Say among the nations: The LOrd is king,he governs the peoples with equity.

Matthew 22:15-21The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap him in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of god in accordance with the truth. and you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion, for you do not regard a person’s status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” Knowing their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the roman coin. He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” They replied, “Caesar’s.” at that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to god what belongs to god.”

key Words & themes

KEy WoRDsCaLLed, authority, Chosen, Power, Holy Spirit, Truth

KEy THEMEs1. all true authority comes from god. god blesses those

who use their authority to serve others.

2. as god’s chosen we persevere not only in works, but in faith through the power of prayer. Power comes from the Holy Spirit.

3. responsibility to the secular community is also obedience to god. all things belong to god.

Have you known someone who tried to entrap you in your words or movements, or test your faithfulness to your Catholic faith? The answer is almost always yeS! Look at our most Holy father Pope Benedict; the world is always trying to take his words out of context, because they’re afraid of the Truth. Let’s make it our goal as teenagers to pray for the Pope and all church leaders to stay strong in times of hostile worldly judgment. – Marisa, 15

1. for the whole congregation:

Let’s face it, we all hate taxes. The people resented that the roman collection of taxes led them to see corruption and experience poverty. The Pharisees resented that roman oppression put them in direct conflict with Jewish Law. The Herodians were only interested in supporting the government and collecting the profits. yet Scripture tells us these bitter enemies were trying to entrap Jesus. if Jesus answered in favor of Caesar, his people would turn against him. if Jesus answered in favor of god, he would have been arrested. entrap is only used once in all the gospels and used here deliberately. it was against Jewish Law to entrap someone. it was also against Jewish law to carry a graven image (such as a coin) on your person.

When Jesus asks for a coin it’s clear that He himself is not carrying a graven image. By their presentation of the coin, they prove that they ignore their own law. They are part of that septum they wanted Jesus to condemn.

When we spend our money in ways that don’t build up our Church, our community and our families, then we participate in idolatry as well. render unto god those things that build up the kingdom and reflect that we are made in His image.

2. for the teens:

So much of growing up is defined by figuring out how to get what we want. Little children say, “i want,” and if they’re told, “no,” they respond, “i hate you.” Later it becomes “if you love me, you’d...” Then it becomes, “do you want me to be the only one in school without an iPhone?”

The Herodians wanted allegiance to Caesar and the wealth that came from it. The Pharisees wanted allegiance to Jewish law and the prestige that came from it. Both wanted to entrap Jesus. Jesus in his answer moves beyond what they want and gives them what they need. He gives them the responsibility to give to god and government. god knows what we want but loves us enough to help us get what we need.

1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10Brothers and sisters: you know what sort of people we were among you for your sake. and you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit, so that you became a model for all the believers in Macedonia and in achaia. for from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth not only in Macedonia and in achaia, but in every place your faith in god has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything. for they themselves openly declare about us what sort of reception we had among you, and how you turned to god from idols to serve the living and true god and to await his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the coming wrath.

Exodus 22:20-26 Thus says the Lord: “you shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of egypt. you shall not wrong any widow or orphan. if ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, i will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up, and i will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans. “if you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him. if you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset; for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body. What else has he to sleep in? if he cries out to me, i will hear him; for i am compassionate.

psalm 18: 2-3, 3-4, 47, 51r: i love you, Lord, my strength.

i love you, O LOrd, my strength,O LOrd, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer.

My god, my rock of refuge,my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold!Praised be the LOrd, i exclaim, and i am safe from my enemies.

The LOrd lives and blessed be my rock!extolled be god my savior. you who gave great victories to your kingand showed kindness to your anointed.

Matthew 22:34-40When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them a scholar of the law tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “you shall love the Lord, your god, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

KEy THEMEs1. Service to those in need is of the utmost importance to

god. We are called to be people of integrity, mindful of those who are in need.

2. as followers of Christ, we are to model of our beliefs.

3. The “golden rule” is based in love, god’s love.

Today in our time, the world is telling us that it’s all about you, you, and you-- that you shall love yourself above everything else. it sounds familiar, huh? i know this sounds silly but let’s be rebellious. yes, you heard me, rebellious. Let’s do everything the world tells us not to be! Let’s love the Lord our god with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind. Join me in this righteous rebellion. – Marisa, 15

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

Setting priorities at work or at home is one of the most difficult tasks to do, but it is always necessary for getting our goals for the day done. in the gospel today, we need to be aware that the Sadducees and Pharisees had different priorities from each other. The Sadducees’ priority was maintaining profitable worship. The Pharisees’ priority was the impossible task of maintaining the 613 precepts of the Law of Moses from the Old Testament. They present Jesus with a question they had fought over for hundreds of years.

Jesus’ answer begins with the Shema “you shall love the Lord, your god, with all your soul, and with all your

mind.” The Shema was a prayer every devout Jew prayed, Sadducees and Pharisees alike, each morning and evening. Loving your neighbor as yourself came from the Book of Leviticus. These commandments were all inclusive of the entire law. argument settled. When you struggle with priorities, ask yourself, “What best reflects my love for god?” What best reflects treating others as i want to be treated?”

2. for the teens:

as fall heads towards winter we all know that cold season begins. Colds go from person to person and with every year seem more and more contagious. Our second reading reminds us that faith in god is contagious. it spreads to many cities by people turning from idols and loving and serving the true god.

The greeks have many words for love. agape means compassionate love. it is a love that is contagious. By accepting the compassionate love of god, revealed at the Mass and on the Cross, we are then able to offer that compassionate (agape) love to others.

prayers of faithfuL

1. Let us pray for the Church, that we may live lives of simplicity, offering ourselves to the poor and forgotten.

2. Let us pray for the poor and homeless of our city, that we may be Christ’s hands and feet, offering them love and warmth.

3. Let us pray for patience and love for those who we find most difficult, that we may love them as our father does.

1 Thessalonians: 2:7b-9, 13Brothers and sisters: we were gentle among you, as a nursing mother cares for her children. With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of god, but our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us. you recall, brothers, our toil and drudgery. Working night and day in order not to burden any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of god. and for this reason we too give thanks to god unceasingly, that, in receiving the word of god from hearing us, you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of god, which is now at work in you who believe.

Malachi 1:14b-2:2b, 8-10a great King am i, says the LOrd of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations. and now, O priests, this commandment is for you: if you do not listen, and if you do not lay it to heart, to give glory to my name, says the LOrd of hosts, i will send a curse upon you and of your blessing i will make a curse. you have turned aside from the way, and have caused many to falter by your instruction; you have made void the covenant of Levi, says the LOrd of hosts. i, therefore, have made you contemptible and base before all the people, since you do not keep my ways, but show partiality in your decisions. Have we not all the one father? Has not the one god created us? Why then do we break faith with each other, violating the covenant of our fathers?

psalm 131: 1, 2, 3r: in you, Lord, i have found my peace.

O LOrd, my heart is not proud, nor are my eyes haughty;i busy not myself with great things, nor with things too sublime for me.

nay rather, i have stilled and quietedmy soul like a weaned child. Like a weaned child on its mother’s lap,so is my soul within me.

O israel, hope in the LOrd,both now and forever.

Matthew 23:1-12Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. for they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. all their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘rabbi.’ as for you, do not be called ‘rabbi.’ you have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one father in heaven. do not be called ‘Master’; you have but one master, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

KEy THEMEs1. god’s Covenant is to be obeyed by all for the sake of

unity in Him.

2. god’s Word is alive and at work in our lives.

3. To be great in the Kingdom of god is to be a servant first.

We need to practice what we preach. it’s a simple thing to say, but a very hard thing to do at times. The Pharisees were famous for preaching the word of god, but not doing the work of god. a life lived for Christ is a life in service to our families, friends, churches, schools, and communities. if we sit there and talk about how we should love, but don’t actually express that in our actions, we are becoming exactly like the Pharisees. in addition, in the good works we do perform, we should not seek glory or recognition. We should simply reflect that glory back to god. He came before us, humbled Himself, and washed our feet. now, it is our turn to be Christians and do the same. – McKenzie, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

We’ve all heard the sayings “put your money where your mouth is” or “practice what you preach.” in the gospel today, Jesus teaches the disciples and the crowds what true faithful, Christian service looks like. if we’re familiar with the gospels at all we know that Jesus and the Pharisees don’t have a great track record. every time they encounter each other, a fight or argument breaks out because of who is

right or wrong. Jesus uses their example of life to illustrate the point that faith isn’t about position or power. it’s about humility and service. How often do we find ourselves volunteering for a ministry or giving a tithe because we want to be recognized? Or, how often do we boast about how great something was because of the hard work we did? The Lord is calling us to live as servants who serve His Kingdom out of love, joy, humility and authenticity.

2. for the teens:

We’re all a fan of someone or something—whether a musician, artist, athlete, or type of food or movie, or even a style of clothes. Typically, we follow that person or invest in that thing until something new and exciting comes along (The homilist can give a few examples from his life.) Our excitement about something normally only lasts until the next big thing comes along. in the Second reading today, we are reminded that our faith should not be based on human words but god’s word. When we base our faith on human word, our faith is fleeting and will die quickly. Let’s look at the example of St. Paul. He worked day and night to proclaim the gospel to the people. He got to know them personally and they began to trust him and listen to what he had to say. Think about what would have happened if the Thessalonians were to base their faith on Paul and not Christ. Their faith would have died as soon as Paul left. This is what Paul was talking about. as teens, you have so many influences in your life. you have the opportunity to base your beliefs and faith on any one of them, but none of them will give you the satisfaction or joy that god’s true word will give. The Word of god is life-giving, unchanging, and true. it transcends fads and cultures. When we come to church, it’s not all about seeing people we know or coming to fulfill and obligation. We come because our faith must be built on Christ. it is god’s Word that sustains us.

prayers of faithfuL

1. Let us pray for the Church, that we may live lives of loving service, especially for those whom the world has forgotten.

2. Let us pray for those weighed down by guilt or shame, that they may experience the healing power of god’s mercy in the sacrament of reconciliation.

3. We pray for forgiveness for all of the ways our pride has disfigured Christ’s face in the eyes of those who do not yet know Him.

1 Thessalonians: 4:13-18[“Shorter Form” excludes the bracketed text]We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. for if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will god, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep. [indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep. for the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of god, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore, console one another with these words.]

Wisdom 6:12-16resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known in anticipation of men’s desire; whoever watches for her at dawn shall not be disappointed, for he shall find her sitting by his gate. for taking thought of her is the perfection of prudence, and whoever for her sake keeps vigil shall quickly be free from care; because she makes her own rounds, seeking those worthy of her, and graciously appears to them in the ways, and meets them with all solicitude.

psalm 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8r: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my god

O god, you are my god whom i seek;for you my flesh pines and my soul thirstslike the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.

Thus have i gazed toward you in the sanctuaryto see your power and your glory, for your kindness is a greater good than life;my lips shall glorify you.

Thus will i bless you while i live;lifting up my hands, i will call upon your name.as with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.

i will remember you upon my couch, and through the night-watches i will meditate on you:you are my help, and in the shadow of your wings i shout for joy.

Matthew 25:1-13Jesus told his disciples this parable: the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. at midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. But the wise ones replied, ‘no, for there may not be enough for us and you. go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves. ‘While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘amen, i say to you, i do not know you. ‘Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

KEy THEMEs1. Wisdom is something to pursue. in wisdom we find the

other virtues, especially prudence.

2. death is a means to everlasting life. as we mourn the loss of a loved one, we remember the promise of immortality. Jesus broke the bonds of death to give us eternal life.

3. The Lord knows us by the preparations we make to greet Him. Vigilance is one characteristic of being Christian.

This gospel is about foresight, and this automatically makes the gospel relatable to most all teenagers because of the lack thereof in their lives (for the most part). am i like the five virgins who had no foresight, didn’t bring their oil, and then were denied entrance to the feast? in other words, am i planning for the time when i leave this earth and am judged or for when Jesus comes in the Second coming and we are all judged? Through this gospel, Jesus is telling us to be ready for that time by planning for the future-- by ‘bringing our flasks of oil’ (or keeping our souls clean by trying to live by Jesus’ ways). Jesus, however, knows that we are not perfect––it says in the gospel that although five of the virgins brought extra oil, they all were asleep when the bridegroom came. it is because of this imperfection that we must be continually preparing ourselves for His coming. Through this preparation of our souls, we will be ready for him even if he comes at an unsuspected time, and then, we will be able to join him for the feast (also known as rejoicing with Him in heaven). – Jaxon, 17

Many times people get caught up in fearing the finality of death. in the Second reading, St. Paul gives us a glimpse into the hope we have that death is not the end for those of us in Christ. St. Paul also gives us peace in knowing that those loved ones who have died before us are not forgotten by god. We have the opportunity to pray for those who have died and ask their intercession on our behalf.

2. for the teens:

for this week the homilist might want to focus on the importance of preparation. Speak to the analogy of the preparation of going on trip to the beach. We spend months trying figure out the dates, get the best deal, finding the right clothes, going to the store to get sunscreen, towels, rafts, boogie-boards, etc. We put a lot of effort into making the trip perfect. We anticipate it for months. do we put this kind of effort into preparing our hearts for Christ? do we anticipate his coming? in the gospel, Christ reminds us that we must always be ready for Christ. How are we preparing for him?

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. for you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When people are saying, “Peace and security,” then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. for all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.

proverbs 31: 10-13, 19-20, 30-31When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize. She brings him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She obtains wool and flax and makes cloth with skillful hands. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her fingers ply the spindle. She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy. Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the LOrd is to be praised. give her a reward of her labors, and let her works praise her at the city gates.

psalm 128: 1-2,3,4-5r: Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Blessed are you who fear the LOrd,who walk in his ways!for you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork;blessed shall you be, and favored.

you wife shall be like a fruitful vinein the recesses of your home;your children like olive plantsaround your table.

Behold, thus is the man blessedwho fears the LOrd.The LOrd bless you from Zion:may you see the prosperity of Jerusalemall the days of your life.

Matthew 25: 14-30[“Shorter Form” excludes the bracketed text]Jesus told his disciples this parable: “a man who was going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one - each according to his ability. Then he went away. [immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. Likewise, the one who received two made another two. But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money.] after a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, i have made five more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, i will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ [Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. See, i have made two more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, i will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, i knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; so out of fear i went off and buried your talent in the ground. KEy THEMEs1. fear of the Lord is good.

2. Be vigilant at all times to guard against evil.

3. responsible Christians invest in the gift of faith. as we invest in faith, god rewards.

The Lord gives us many gifts, most of which are free and undeserved. We have the choice to use the gifts to the best of our ability and bear fruit, or we can choose to bury the gift and waste it. This gospel message really challenges me to take a look at my life and see, first, the gifts god has given me and, second, if i am using them for His glory. if god has given me a gift, and i use it for his glory, what great things i could do for his Kingdom! – Jennifer, 15

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

Begin by sharing some of your fears with the congregation. (Share things that are both small and big fears, and have some fun with it.) fear is one of the most stifling things we face in our lives. Many times we feel afraid because of what others may think or because more may be expected of us. no matter what the reason, fear holds us back and keeps us from being all that god created us to be. it’s no wonder that we hear the phrase “be not afraid” over and over again in the Scriptures. in today’s gospel, the third servant acts out of fear, holding him back from being faithful to his master. ironically, however, there is one type of fear that we are called to: fear of the Lord. in today’s reading from Proverbs we hear, “The woman who fears the LOrd is to be praised.” We also hear in the Psalm, “Blessed are those who fear the Lord.” Therefore, in order to be truly faithful, we must know where to place our fear, and as we place more of our fear in the Lord, all our other fears are put in perspective. What are some things that we are most afraid of in our lives? How do these fears hold us back from following god more closely? How can we grow in our fear of the Lord? Challenge the congregation to be honest with themselves and pray about how they can more fully trust god by offering their fears to Him.

2. for the teens:

god has blessed each of us with many gifts. Some of us may be really good in school. Some of us may be great athletes. There may be others of us here today who are great listeners, musicians, or leaders. The point is that all of us have been given gifts that can serve the world. One gift that we all have in common is the gift of life. now imagine if we took our gifts, especially the gift of our lives, and hid them. They wouldn’t bear much fruit, would they? god gives us things, not to glorify ourselves, but so that we may use them for the good of others to glorify Him. What gifts has god blessed you with? in what ways have you hidden them? in what ways have you used them to glorify yourself ? in what ways have you used them to glorify god?

Challenge the teens to think more deeply about their gifts and talents and pray about how they can further use them to serve the Kingdom of god.

back.’ His master said to him in reply, ‘you wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that i harvest where i did not plant and gather where i did not scatter? Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that i could have got it back with interest on my return? now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. for to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. and throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’]

1 Corinthians 15: 20-26, 28Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. for since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. for just as in adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the first fruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his god and father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power.for he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death, when everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that god may be all in all.

Ezekiel 34:11-12,15-17Thus says the Lord gOd: i myself will look after and tend my sheep. as a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will i tend my sheep. i will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. i myself will pasture my sheep; i myself will give them rest, says the Lord gOd. The lost i will seek out, the strayed i will bring back, the injured i will bind up, the sick i will heal but the sleek and the strong i will destroy, shepherding them rightly. as for you, my sheep, says the Lord gOd, i will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats.

psalm 23:1-2, 2-3, 5-6r: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing i shall want.

The LOrd is my shepherd; i shall not want.in verdant pastures he gives me repose.

Beside restful waters he leads me;he refreshes my soul. He guides me in right pathsfor his name’s sake.

you spread the table before mein the sight of my foes;you anoint my head with oil;my cup overflows.

Only goodness and kindness follow meall the days of my life;and i shall dwell in the house of the LOrdfor years to come.

Matthew 25:31-46Jesus said to the disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my father. inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. for i was hungry and you gave me food, i was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ and the king will say to them in reply, ‘amen, i say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Then he will say to those on his left, ‘depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. for i was hungry

KEy THEMEs1. god is our good shepherd, who separates the sheep from

2. in adam sin entered the world, in Christ forgiveness for our sins gives us everlasting life. death is destroyed.

3. We are to serve the poor at all times. god judges us on the good we do.

What a glorious picture this gospel brings to mind. as i was praying about it, i was just imagining how awesome it would be to see the Son of Man coming in glory, surrounded by angels, and with all nations before Him. and can you imagine what joy those on His right would have felt? Blessed by the father, their mission on earth had been fulfilled. even though they hadn’t realized it, when they were serving the strangers, the hungry, the imprisoned, the ill, they were actually serving their god. in contrast, those on His left must have felt such despair. So many chances missed, just letting their mission in life pass them by. as i was reading this gospel, certain people in my life came to mind, and considering that when i serve them, i serve Christ, i know i haven’t been serving them enough. – Kateri, 17

homiLy suggestions

1. for the whole congregation:

This Sunday is a great opportunity to share with the congregation about many of the ministries within the parish and the diocese. Take some time to discuss ministries like St. Vincent de Paul, eucharistic Ministers to the Sick, Prison Ministry, or any other ministries that fit today’s gospel. Be sure to share a personal story or two about how these ministries have made an impact on you or the people that are served. remind the congregation that while service begins in our hearts through prayer, it is put into action by our hands and feet. Challenge the assembly to be the hands and feet of Christ by giving of their time and talent to help serve the least of our brothers and sisters.

2. for the teens:

Often times when we think of following Christ, we tend to believe that we are simply called to be nice to others. While this is a “nice” thought, we are really called to go much deeper than this. following Christ means that we must serve. as we hear in today’s gospel, service must extend to all people, especially those who are considered “the least.” ask the teens to think about the times when they encounter “the least” in their schools, in their communities, or in any other areas of their lives. They may not necessarily be hungry or imprisoned, but perhaps they could be those who are made fun of, those who are outcast, or those who are lonely. Whoever “the least” may be, challenge the teens in the coming week to seek to be Christ’s sheep by reaching out to them so that they may know god’s amazing love.

and you gave me no food, i was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs? He will answer them, ‘amen, i say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ and these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

1. Let us pray for god’s kingdom to be established here on earth, that all might know His loving power and mercy.

2. Let us pray for forgiveness for the times we have ignored Christ’s presence in the poor and lonely. May we always love and serve Him in the needy and forgotten.

3. Let us pray for a greater awareness of our need for god’s saving graces, that we may cry out to Him, our King, in need of His love and mercy.
