Etymology of …Schizophrenia

• 1912, from Modern Latin, literally "a splitting of the mind”• The word "schizophrenia" is less than 100 years old.

However the disease was first identified as a discrete mental illness by Dr. Emile Kraepelin in the 1887 and the illness itself is generally believed to have accompanied mankind through its history.

• The Swiss psychiatrist, Eugen Bleuler, coined the term, "schizophrenia" in 1911. He was also the first to describe the symptoms of the illness as "positive" or "negative."

My Nanny’s poem about her Father

My Dad is an air-raid WardenHe wears an air-raid Warden`s hatHe wears an air-raid Warden`s arm bandAnd he`s very proud of thatHe checks all around the housesLooking for a chink of lightHe does his job so manfullyEvery single nightUntil last Monday eveningHe laid down for a short spellAnd fell into a deep slumberTill he heard my Mother yellWake up! Wake up! an incendiary`s droppedThe whole street is on fireOh why are you so dense! But they needn`t have worried quite so muchIt only burned Mr. Beesley`s fence!!

My Nanny wrote this poem about her Father (my Great Grandfather) who was an Air Raid Warden in Beckenham before he was called up to go to War.Elise

My Nanny’s memories of school in 1944

Balgowan School, Beckenham - 1944While we were in our English lesson in school today the air-raid siren sounded and we all had to run once more to the air-raid shelters in the playground. We just got there in time because the next thing that happened was an almighty loud bang and we soon found that the school had been badly damaged due to a V2 rocket bomb hitting houses nearby! These bombs are becoming more frequent. Our parents who lived nearby ran to the school, fearing the worst...The headmistress was almost in tears and was upset because she had not been given permission to evacuate the school. However, we have now been told that we can choose to be evacuated if we wish. I am nervous at the thought of leaving home for the first time but it was decided that my sister and I would in fact choose to go - we had no idea where. We were told "it will be lovely, you will probably be going to Devon". The next day my Mother gave me a little case which contained a gas mask, pyjamas and a few clothes. It was very sad saying goodbye and when we all boarded the coaches I could see Mummy wiping her eyes with a handkerchief. We were driven for many hours but when we arrived we were not in Devon - but Yorkshire!
