Have you gifted one of those “gift of the month” memberships only to find that it sort of wore out its welcome after the first couple of months. Here’s a unique twist... “Variety of the Month” available from amazingclubs.com. Just choose the length of member-

ship and from there you can send a variety of items, something from a different category each month if you like. It never gets old and you know they have to find something they like in the variety that arrives in the mail. They offer everything from bacon to wine, from peanut butter to lobster, neckties to teddy bears. Wow!

Looking for a unique stocking stuffer? Bedol International Group, Inc. brings you the water alarm clock that works without batteries or elec-tricity. The clock will keep time, has an alarm and works using the ions found in tap water. The water does not need to be replaced for 6 months or longer. It’s cute and certainly makes for a great desk conversation piece. Available from gifts.com

We’ve all run out of ink and it’s always at the worst possible t ime, l ike when you’ re t ry ing to jot down the most important phone number of your life. eWell, how about a forever inkless pen? Available from vat19.com, the Inkless Metal Beta Pen features a special metal alloy tip. As you write, tiny amounts of this metal are deposited onto the page. The silvery markings may resemble pencil, but they are permanent and smudge-proof. It’s under $30 and certain to be a conversation piece.

If you have someone on your list that likes to play in the kitchen, this is their Christmas toy! It turn your kitchen into a food laboratory with this how-to kit that teaches you how to t ransform l iquids, like honey, into jelly-like cubes, spherify chopped produce into f lavor-packed beads, or even morph melted chocolate into a delicate powder or spaghetti-like strands. You’re only limited by your imagination! It’s the Mo-lecular Gastronomy Kit available from modernistpantry.com. Very Cool!!!!

A beautiful little zen gift. The teacup has an unusual angled bottom that allows it to rest in two different positions. On one side is a screened compartment in which you place your favorite loose tea leaves. Pour hot water through the screen and allow it to steep. Once it’s done, simply tip the cup in the other direction, lifting the leaves up out of the water. The cup’s large size is perfect for cradling between your hands as you enjoy the warmth of your drink. This is just a wonderful, thoughtful gift. Available at uncommongoods.com

Oh, I’ve got one last thing from my overloaded geek brain. It may not be available before Christmas but, it’s worth watching for it’s release. It is a one of a kind camera/printer that you hold in your hand. Yes, it’s that small. You take a picture and then print it in full color by brushing this thing over any surface! Check out their site at printdreams.com. I’m checking on availability constantly cause I’ve got to have one of these. Should be avail-able any time now at under $200.

Matt Costanzo is a dynamic young Varsity Lacrosse player for the Tesoro Titans. This energetic and highly en-thusiastic Tesoro high school student is also a dedicated member of Ath-letes Choice in Rancho Santa Mar-garita. In addition to his academic and scholastic routine, Matt takes time for the intense strength and technique workouts with coach Nick Tintle of Athlete’s Choice. “I would have to say that Athletes Choice is a perfect name for this organization since the players them-selves choose to train here, “says Costanzo. “I particularly enjoy training here because of its fun environment and because coach Tintle has re-ally helped me improve my Lacrosse skills, and increase my fi tness and strength levels immensely and all of that contributes to improving my game. Nick’s special knowledge and skills were apparent right away when he suggested special Lacrosse workouts to increase my strength, speed, and agil-ity. I have only been working on these drills for the past few months but I can already feel the improvement. I’m excited to work even harder this upcoming spring season as I hope to play with Lacrosse in college and Athletes Choice has been the perfect counterpart to my training.”Athletes Choice is proud to honor Matt Costanzo as our Athlete of the Month .

Athlete’s Choice is pleased to announce our Athlete of the Month, Matt Costanzo

By ShawnTe PierceEver since I began receiving

monthly beauty boxes, I have been thinking about how great making them for my best gals this Christmas would be. So, I have already begun collecting samples and full-size products from my monthly boxes. I have also been collecting a few extra miscellaneous items along the way. If you think this would be a great idea for you to try this Christmas let me give you a few suggestions. You never know; next year they may return the favor!

Make Use of Your Monthly Beauty Boxes

I subscribe to two beauty boxes, Sample Society and Julep Maven. I cannot use every sample in these boxes but I have friends who would love to try some of the products. Therefore, I have been stashing some of these goodies away to include in gift boxes for Christmas and birthdays as well. There is no additional cost for me since I already have the products.

Purchase Minis of their Favorite Brands

Brands like Bath and Body Works and Avon are always coming out with new scents. Often they have sample vials or mini versions you can pur-chase. Purchasing these minis for your friends will allow them to try out the latest products from their favorite brands, all thanks to you!

Pick Free Samples They LoveWhen you shop at Sephora,

Miss Jessie’s, Smashbox and other beauty retailers, you get to pick free samples with certain purchases. Instead of picking samples of things you want, choose ones you know your friends will love to try out. It costs you nothing but it will make you the best friend ever!

Freebie Tip: Miss Jessie’s allows you to order two free sample packets from a limited selection of their prod-ucts without making any additional purchase and shipping is on them!

Purchase Full Sizes When BOGO Sales Hit

Who doesn’t love a good “Buy One, Get One” (BOGO) sale? Whether the “get one” is a freebie or half-off deal, use that BOGO to get your friends full-sized beauty

products. Your friends will love you for it and you do not have to come out of pocket too much.

Putting the Box TogetherThis is the best part for me. I love

finding boxes or pretty bags and fill-ing them with decorative tissue and arranging the gifts in an attractive manner. When creating your beauty box or beauty bag I suggest placing their full-sized product in the center with the minis and samples strategi-cally placed around it. Tie a pretty

bow or wrap it in gilded wrapping paper. Just make sure your box leaves the impression they have something wonderful waiting for them inside of it.

Are you excited to get started creating beauty boxes as gifts for your friends? I am and I cannot wait to put them together. There are a few BOGO sales happening right now that I need to check out and you should be on the lookout for some as well. Happy Holidays!

Christmas Gifts JUst for him

By L. SpainOnce again retailers are gearing

up for Black Friday holiday sales. In fact, they are so excited that some of them are even offering their Black Friday specials in the evening on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day! While many shoppers have become jaded to Black Friday enticements, 2012 may be a little different. This year the hottest technology gifts have finally hit low price points that should be at-tainable for many American families.

1. Apple Mini iPad. The original Apple iPad showed America the promise of tablet computing. It was portable, cool, and pretty expensive for a great recession era product. It is tough to conjure up $500 or $600 for any technology product. At $329, the 7.9-inch Mini iPad brings the Apple tablet ecosystem tantalizingly close to millions of American households. If you’d prefer a larger form factor, Walmart will be offering the Apple iPad 2 for $399 and giving buyers a $75 gift card between 10 and 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving Night.

2. Barnes and Noble Nook Color & Amazon Kindle Fire. If you can’t afford an Apple or you are more into the world of books, the 7-inch

Nook Color HD and Kindle Fire HD are very capable portable computing platforms in their own right. Best of all they each weigh in at the $200 price point. The Nook HD is $199 with free shipping and the Kindle Fire HD is $199 with free super saver shipping. The Nook comes with a AC Adapter/Charger and the Kindle charges via slower USB cable unless you pay $20 extra for a charger. The Nook offers the advantage of in-store support, while Amazon offers a much richer e-commerce ecosystem where you can buy almost anything.

3 . Sams ung Ch romebook . Google’s Chrome Operating Sys-tem has really matured over the past year. Today it is far more capable and comes on a very reasonably priced $249 notebook from Sam-sung. It makes for a great second computer for a multi-computer households. The Chromebook also makes a good computing platform for people who don’t want to hassle with anti-virus software and updates. It also boots very quickly compared to conventional computers. The major drawback is that it is highly de-pendent upon Internet access. If you have broadband and are comfortable working in the Google universe, you

should enjoy the maintenance-free nature of the Chrome OS.

4. Streaming Video Players. This Christmas season also presents technology buffs with the opportunity to ditch cable TV in favor of television delivered via broadband Internet. This allows households to assemble televi-sion viewing options in a more eco-nomical a la carte fashion. Products like the Roku 2 XD and XS player and Western Digital WD TV player allow users to use their broadband internet connections to deliver programming from a wide variety of sources like Netflix, Youtube, and Hulu. The idea is that the individual subscriptions and a broadband connection should cost significantly less than a traditional full-featured cable or satellite plan. While

some players are more expensive, at Best Buy, the Roku 2 players sell for $79 and $99 and the Western Digital Player sells for $99.

5. Flat screen HDTV sets. While I’ve been perfectly content with free old school televisions, late adopters should rejoice in the fact that their are plenty of HDTV sets in the market for less than $300. The technology is commonplace and affordable now. Still, it’s exciting to see good deals on flat screen HD (720p) televisions.

It’s always exciting when new technology hits the market, but it becomes even more exciting when that technology becomes affordable.

Reflections of the Ocean Classi-cal Keyboard Series at Saddleback College, Department of Music, is pleased to present the A Musical Gallery: 7 Portraits at Christmastide on Thursday, December 6th at 7 pm in the McKinney Theatre. Thought-provoking, powerful, touching, and perhaps even a little shocking, this is not mere holiday fare! Monks in procession, lighting effects, lute and harpsichord, and bells from Coventry Cathedral are used to set the stage for seven musical vignettes of classi-cal piano music. Well-known Pianist, Professor and Chair of the Piano Department at California State Uni-versity at Fullerton, Dr. Rob Watson tells the Christmas story through a fascinating web of solo piano works from the 16th to the 21st centuries. In Dulci Jubilo, Greensleeves, and Adeste Fidelis will also make cameo appearances.

Pianist and Professor, Dr. Rob Watson revels in placing classical music in unusual contexts. While he also explores new music, he al-ways seeks to reach the heart of his listeners. He has given solo recitals in international music festivals in Bulgaria, presented lecture recitals in China and Japan, performed with internationally renowned musicians such as the St. Petersburg String Quartet, and performed concertos such as Rhapsodies by Gershwin and Rachmaninoff. He also created two truly unique concerts that have left audiences uplifted and enthusiastic. His “A Musical Gallery: 7 Portraits at Christmastide”, he combines visual images and sounds along with sing-ers and instrumentalists as an intro-duction for each section of his solo piano music. The repertory include works from the 1500s through the 21st century all of which had some

kind of Christmas element.Tickets are $12 general; $7 se-

niors; $5 students; 17 and under FREE with paying adult; teachers with MTAC/CAPT contact the box office to receive complimentary tickets for your students or guest. The ticket office is open Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 4 or order your tickets online at any time at www.saddleback.edu/arts.

The Interfaith Council of Greater Rancho Santa Margarita hosted their annual “Let Us Sing Thanks-giving” event at San Francisco Solano Catholic Church Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 3pm. The crowd was an enthusiastic one filled with many young faces and a little more noise than usual because this year the music was focused on the children. As in previous years each faith group would present a very short sermon followed by a musical number by a member/s of his/her congregation. This year the thanksgiving theme was “Giving thanks for freedom and remember-ing those who served.”

The event started with all faiths in the audience singing “America the Beautiful” followed by a ser-mon by Reverend John Embree of Community Lutheran and a solo by young Lutheran, Jason Leland. The St. John’s Middle School Choir, Light of Unity Singers, LDS Santa Margarita Children’s Choir, and San Francisco Children’s Choir were all part of the children’s music. Margie Dayley, Director of the LDS Chil-dren’s choir said, “When we told the parents that the children had this opportunity to sing at this interfaith

event they were really excited. The children loved singing the melody of America’s patriotic hymns.”

In his sermon, Reverend Canon John Taylor, Vicar, of St. John’s Episcopal, spoke about the im-por tance o f un i t i ng toge the r as Americans even though we might not agree on the results of the recent election. “That is what the interfaith council is all about. We want to celebrate our similarities and differences while promoting harmony and unity and fostering greater understandings between faiths said, Dave Daly, RSM Stake Interfaith Director for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

As in previous years, the end of the program included singing “Let There Be Peace on Earth”, but this year the combined chil-dren’s choirs from all faiths sang the first verse followed by the ent i re aud ience jo in ing them on the second verse. Deacon Carol Swanson of San Francisco Solano Cathol ic Church said, “Bringing the children seemed to really grow our audience. I don’t think we have ever had such a large crowd.”

The Interfaith council in-cludes San Francisco Solano Catholic Church, First Church of Christ, Scientist, St. John’s Episcopal, Community Lu-theran, the Bahá’í Faith of RSM and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This year’s “Let Us Sing Thanksgiving” was the 10th anniversary of the an-nual interfaith event. This year’s theme was “Remem-bering those who served”. Each participating faith was invited to give a short sermon and share music pertaining to the theme.

Local Dentist Dr. Michael Tessier Discusses How Soon Should

my Child be Visiting the DentistMany parents ask me “How soon should my child be vis-iting the dentist?” I disagree with the American Dental Association opinion that infants should be seen be a dentist by the time they’re a year old. I called the ADA, and then

two pedodontists (dentists who specialize in treating children) for elaboration. Over my thirty-five years of practicing dentistry, I have felt that, except in very extreme cases, the earliest a child needs to be seen by a dentist is in the third year. After my recent conversations, my opinion hasn’t changed. The specialists and the ADA all agree that the reason to bring the child in earlier is to make sure that the parents know how to take care of their children’s teeth. Here’s what I like to tell parents:Parents should examine their children’s mouths routinely. Once teeth are in, visually checking the mouth is important; and if something looks out of the ordinary, then the child should be seen by a professional. With regard to what a child puts in his or her mouth, sugars (simple carbohydrates) should always be avoided. Apple juice, in par-ticular, is very sugary and acidic; when a child is allowed to drink it from a baby-bottle, irrespective of how enjoyable it may be to the child, it is very bad for the teeth. If a child is thirsty, give your child cool, fresh water. Complex carbohydrates, like fruits or veg-etables, probably don’t break down enough in the mouth to cause cavities, so they’re OK. Babies should never go to sleep with a bottle of milk or formula, either, and for the same reasons. And, soft drinks should NEVER, EVER, cross a child’s lips.Teaching your child the importance of brushing, of course, is something a child should be taught early. Having said that, a child will clean the teeth probably better by eating a carrot, or a stick of celery, or an apple, as by brushing. That’s because they have neither the concept nor the coordination to brush effectively.Unless there’s something out of the ordinary going on such as an accident or a parent has a question, I like to see kids when they’re about three years old. Children do better in the chair on their first visit when they’ve been to my office before with mom or even an older sibling. So, bring your little-one with you when you come in to your get your teeth cleaned. Dr. Michael Tessier’s office is located at 28562 Oso Parkway the intersection of Oso and Antonio Parkways (near the car wash). Most major credit cards and dental plans are cheerfully accepted. Telephone (949) 459-7212.

Nine volunteers of Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge No. 2444 (“Elks Lodge”) and three volunteers of Santa Ana Elks Lodge visited veterans at the Long Beach VA Hospital. In the hospital recreation room, the Elks volunteers served lemonade and cookies to the veterans that were playing the Elks administered bingo games. After bingo, the Elks volunteers went to the Spinal Injury and Convalescent wards to personally hand out lap robes and other items to those Veteran’s, to talk with them and just to let them know that the Elk’s Care! The total estimated value of the 100 lap robes, refreshments, clothing, bingo winnings and other gift items brought to the veterans was about $1,000.

Shari Scott, Elks Lodge Veterans Com-mittee chairperson said, “All of the Vet-eran’s were so grateful. But when they thanked us profusely for all that we do for them, the Elks volunteers all replied; NO! Thank YOU”!

The Mission Viejo / Saddleback Elks Lodge No. 2444, celebrating forty-two (42) years of service to the Saddleback Valley communities, is one of ten lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 144 year history of giving, “Elks Care, Elks Share.”

By Miss FortuneWhether you are a homeschooler

or the parent of a mainstream edu-cated child, you can use architecture themed building kits and toys to help with history, motor skills, building principals and geography. Lego is one of the leaders in large scale architecture building systems; one of the biggest perks to investing in them is that they can use incorporated with other Lego sets and bulk packs to create new or modified scenes. There are a lot of companies that make specialty building systems and kits, some of them are better than others in regards to price and replay value. Age recommendations are just that, a suggestion. If your child has build-ing experience they might be able to tackle some of the more advanced systems.

ArchiQuest Building System: Priced at about seventy dollars, this kits are made up of wood blocks that have printed images on them. There are endless ways to arrange them to make different types of structures in different sizes. The beauty of the system is that you can keep adding to it to make larger scenes and struc-tures. This system was something that my boys loved and spend hours using. From it their love of Lego blos-somed but the ArchiQuest system is not interlocking so it requires more planning when doing something with five or six levels. This is something that kids of all ages can use and it is something that can grow with them. In addition to the medieval theme there are also Egyptian and fantasy themed sets that you can get. While they are expensive they are something that will last a long time.

3-D Puzzles: If you have an older child that loves a challenge then 3-D puzzles are worth looking in to. They can be a little hard to get used to since you are not building a traditional flat puzzle but rather something that has sides to it. We have had 3-D puzzles from a couple of different companies like Ravensburger and Puzzle Plex over the years. The ones

with an architectural or historic slant to them are based off of real world structures. Some of the most popular 3-D puzzles include Big Ben, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Taj Mahal and Empire State Building. These types of puzzles help kids think in a differ-ent way when working on the piece; it can help with broadening their thinking skills as well as thinking in a 3-D format.

Nanoblock Building Systems: Nanoblock uses the same type of building system as Lego; pegged or studded pieces that interlock to form a shape or design. The prices on most of the specialty Nanoblock sets are about half the price of what you would pay for Lego but there is a noticeable difference in the type of plastic used as well as the overall feel of them. From an educational standpoint the structured sets are amazing; The Easter Island set was one of the first sets I purchased and it was something that the boys loved building. Ultimately they took the

design and enlarged it using graph paper to expand the size of the stat-ues. Other impressive Nanoblock sets that are excellent for architec-tural or historical lessons include Himeji Castle, Kinkakuji Temple and Neuschwanstein

GeoMag: Imagine if you could expand basic building and structure concepts to incorporate symmetry, the use of magnets and the ability to build 3-D shapes. If that sounds inter-esting then the GeoMag system will make your jaw drop. One of the most amazing things that they boys built with the larger and supplement sets was a DNA double helix. While not on a grand scale of those you would see in college labs, it had over 1,800 pieces. GeoMag is made in Switzerand and is an imported item, the systems and sets are not expensive but they can be hard to find in retail stores. There are magnets in the set so they are not recom-mended for younger children or use near computer equipment.

Lego Architecture: One of the most popular Lego Architec-ture sets is Fallingwa-ter but I wasn’t all that impressed with the build, especially con-sidering the hundred dollar price tag. The small and mid sized sets include The White House, Sydney Op-era House, Seattle’s Space Needle and the Guggenheim Mu-seum. Even though I am a huge fan of Lego there are some architecture sets that are not worth the sug-

gested price. It remains to be seen if they are going to add more sets to the theme in 2012 and 2013 although there have been additions to the web-site about new models being added in September.

How can these types of toys and building systems benefit children? You can use them to teach history, ge-ography, building concepts, architec-tural history and art appreciation. For the basic building sets like GeoMag you can work in science with hands

on visual learning. Reading about a famous building can be educational but if you give a child the opportunity to build it on a smaller scale they will retain more of what they are learning about and that could lead to them branching out in to other areas. My boys had a deep love of all things Egyptian and were fascinated with how the pyramids were constructed. This lead them to making their own from origami cubes to see which design was the strongest.

If you are considering investing in building sets you are going to want to look for something that can be expanded; this increases the replay value and the things that can be done with it. Some of the systems are not cheap but can you put a price on education?

Technology is always high on holiday gift lists, and this year is no different. Recent trends in mo-bile phones, an ever-growing range of tablet and e-reader price points and styles, and fashionable accessories mean you have more great options than ever.

Thanks to some of the hottest handsets coming to no-contract plans, smartphones are truly giftable for the first time. Get the ultimate in flexibility with no long-term commitment from providers like Ra-dioShack No-Contract Wireless, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile. Time to upgrade or on an existing contract? Consider a gift card, or look for the best deals at a retailer that offers top contract carriers.

For the video or book lover on your list, tablets and e-readers come in many brands, sizes and price points to meet their needs and manage your holiday budget. They are very portable and are a great way to make waiting in line or at the doctor fly by much faster. Consider buying a device on the same operating system as the recipient’s smart-phone so app purchases will go twice as far. Plus, some people are loyal to one camp or another and will value your gift more if you show you know that.

Accessorize your gadget purchases. The right phone, tablet or e-reader case shows recipients you know their style and protects their present. Speaking of extending the life of these devices, consider a warranty plan – especially for kids or adults whose work or leisure activities might put that gifted gadget at risk.

For the music lover, headphones are a great choice. Wireless headphones use Bluetooth tech-

nology and operate on batteries for a hands-free experience. If choosing wired headphones, look for a pair with a strong cord or one that can be replaced if damaged. For a combination of high-fashion and high-function, look for hot headphones like Beats by Dr. Dre.

For entertaining a crowd, check out compact options such as the AUVIO Bluetooth Portable Speaker. The speaker has great sound, and a compact size make it easy to enjoy music with friends no matter where you are.

Don’t forget the power. For battery-operated

gifts, make sure to pick up the right batteries. For rechargeable tech gifts, power them up with Ener-cell Portable Power Banks, car chargers, or even a phone-charging case.

If you’re a little unsure about choosing the right tech for everyone on your list, nothing beats turn-ing to experts like the folks at RadioShack for help. Relying on gadget gurus and even getting a hands-on demo help ensure your present is just the right fit – unlike that sweater Aunt Margaret gave you last year.

miraClEs “lE CirqUE” raisEs nEarly $750K Kids With

lifE-thrEatEninG illnEssEsMiracles for Kids, a non-profit organization based in Tustin, CA, raised

nearly $750,000 at their 8th annual gala; its most successful gala to date. Proceeds from the event fund the organization’s programs that provide aid to hundreds of low-income families with critically ill children throughout Southern California. Miracles for Kids currently operates at CHOC Children’s and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, as well as supports cutting-edge research through the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.

Almost 600 of Southern California’s most notable people attended the popular annual Night of Miracles, emceed by ESPN SportsCenter Anchor Neil Everett. Themed this year as “Miracles Le Cirque”, the gala celebrated the imaginary world of Le Cirque – bubbling with its key elements of art, dance, dexterity, daring and grace. Incredible performances by Il Circo, the critically acclaimed troupe of gravity defying acrobats, entertained guests in addition to a lively silent and live auction. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive taste of various specially prepared Nolet’s Silver Dry Gin cocktails, donated by Miracles for Kids event sponsor and longtime supporter Carl Nolet and Nolet Spirits USA.

“Miracles Le Cirque has been another great success for Miracles for Kids, which has been a critically needed support system for more than 600 families over the past eight years,” said Miracles for Kids board chairman, Kenneth Gerdau. “It’s truly overwhelming to see such an outpouring of generosity from the community for so many families in crisis who have children with life-threatening illnesses.”

The most impactful moment of the evening came when the room stood in ovation following a profile video on 4-year-old cancer patient and Miracles for Kids’ grant recipient, Anaya, and her mother, Amanda, who were in the room. The Fund-a-Family fundraiser directly followed, led by auctioneer Jim Nye and assisted by Miracles for Kids children and families, where more than $270,000 was raised from 176 bidders. One hundred percent of the funds were donated to the organization’s Grant Program, which funds basic living expenses for families in need.

Always an enthusiastic auctioneer, Jim Nye led a live auction that showcased luxury getaway offerings, unforgettable experience packages and stunning couture fashions, such as a six-night stay for two at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives, a VIP French Open experience, a day with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, a custom clothing package with diamond cufflinks, and a pure bred, Yellow Labrador Retriever puppy with lifetime obedience classes.

This year, Miracles for Kids offered electronic bidding technology through Bid Pal for the silent auction making the event almost entirely electronic. Guests bid on items ranging from luxury hotel packages to unique cases of wine. There was also an Opportunity Drawing for the “Circles” Bracelet donated by famed jewelry designer Martin Katz valued at $27,500.

Miracles for Kids supporter Sugar Ray Leonard attended and took the stage during the Live Auction, auctioning a full day at his private home, raising the charity $14,000. During the Fund-a-Family portion earlier in the evening, his wife Bernadette gave an impromptu speech celebrating the charity’s cause and its impact on her personally, and donated an additional $10,000 to Fund-a-Family.

Another memorable moment of the evening was when Javier Sosa Jr., the son of Javier Sosa, Sr. and founder of Javier’s Cantina & Grill, accepted the Miracle Maker award for his family’s decade long personal and professional support of the organization and the families it serves.

“We can’t thank our generous sponsors enough for making this event such a remarkable success,” said Miracles for Kids president and event chair, Autumn Strier. “With more than 50 event sponsors donating over $250,000, it shows how much and how many individuals and businesses in Southern

California really care and want to make a difference in the lives of families devastated by their child’s critical illness.”

Special thanks to the lead sponsors of the evening which included: Exclusive wine sponsor Hundred Acre, who do-nated wine for the eve-ning; the exclusive spirit sponsor of the evening, Nolet Spirits U.S.A.; and exclusive jewelry sponsor, Martin Katz, who donated the $27,500 “Circles” bracelet and $5,000 cuff links to the David August Wardrobe live auction item.

Founded in 2002, Tustin-based Miracles for Kids’ mission is to improve the lives of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The organization accomplishes this mission by providing families with ongoing financial and other support necessary to survive financially during their child’s illness, by funding research focused on eradicating life-threatening childhood diseases and by serving as an advocate for children and families who are fighting life-threatening illnesses. Mirroring the magic that brings Clara’s nutcracker to life in Tchai-kovsky’s Christmas ballet, “The Nutcracker,” Pacific Symphony enchants audiences with battling toy soldiers, waltzing flowers and visions of sugar plum fairies in its popular Family Musical Mornings concert, “Nutcracker for Kids.” Reinvigorating the cherished mas-terpiece created by Tchaikovsky, the Symphony collaborates with the talented dancers from Festival Ballet Theatre (FBT) and narra-tor Bree Burgess Rosen (as Mrs. Claus—yes, the one married to Santa) to bring the ballet to life in a condensed 45-minute version, specially created for children ages 5-11. Under the direction of the Symphony’s Assistant Conductor Maxim Eshkenazy, who conducts his final family concert and passes the baton to Alejandro Gutiér-rez, the Symphony tells the tale of Clara, a girl who receives an extraordinary gift—a nutcracker that magically turns into a prince! (Gutiérrez makes his official debut as the Symphony’s new assistant conductor on Jan. 12, when he leads “The Magic Flute.”)

After a fierce battle with the Mouse King, the prince whisks Clara away to The Kingdom of Sweets, where she encounters a variety of delight-

ful characters including the Sugar Plum Fairy. This seasonal favorite concludes with a holiday sing-along featuring the young members of Pa-cific Symphony Santiago Strings at the Elf Philharmonic and a special guest—Santa Claus himself! Taking place Saturday, Dec. 8, at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, children are invited to participate in a festive Musical Carnival before and after the show (more details below.) Tickets for the concert are $29-$46; for more information, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.Paci-ficSymphony.org.

“My favorite part of our ‘Nut-cracker’ is seeing the faces of the kids after the performance,” says Maestro Eshkenazy. “They are so happy after hearing the timeless music of Tchaikovsky, which has become synonymous with celebrat-ing the holiday season. To be a part of the Christmas magic the Symphony and the FBT dancers create for them through our version of ‘Nutcracker’—created just for children—makes this concert that much more special.”

“With this being my final family concert, I hope to leave the audi-ence with a smile,” says Maestro Eshkenazy. “I have treasured work-ing with the Symphony’s talented

musicians, the time I’ve spent with the kids after concerts and being a part of the Symphony—an in-fluential mechanism that creates and gives so much to the Orange County community.”

Continuing in the effort to make spirits bright—and as a part of the Family Musical Mornings—the Mu-sical Carnival, which begins at 9 a.m. (for the 10 a.m. concert) and 12:15 p.m. (for the 11:30 a.m. con-cert), is filled with fun holiday music for the whole family and hands-on activities for children. This year, the carnival features roaming carolers from “Caroling Connection,” three hand-bell choirs from Trinity United Presbyterian Church and a bal-let museum, where pointe shoes, tiaras and ballet costumes are on display courtesy of FBT. Children may also: meet the dancers from FBT, ask the orchestra questions about conductors and meet the musicians, including musicians from Pacific Symphony Youth En-sembles, make holiday cards, par-ticipate in an instrument test drive and visit share holiday wishes while visiting with Santa.

“The collaboration with the Festi-val Ballet Theatre has been one that results in perfection every year and further inspires the kids’ interest in the arts,” continues Eshkenazy.

FBT, founded in 1988 by Salwa Rizkalla, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the artistic enrichment of the Orange County community through professional productions, educational programs and by pro-viding nurturing and intensive artis-tic home base to some of Southern California’s most talented young dancers. The dancers appearing in this production are students of Southland Ballet Academy (SBA), the official school of FBT. Founded in 1983, SBA provides the profes-sional level of training in classical ballet that students require before joining the company.

Family Musical Mornings con-tinue on Jan. 12, 2013, with Mo-zart’s musical fairy tale, “The Magic Flute,” a tale of a triumph of love in a world of enchantments and magic brought to life by professional opera singers and framed by Mozart’s enthralling music. Then on March 23, 2013, the Symphony presents Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” brought to life by life-sized puppets! The family concert season concludes on May 4, 2014 in “Under the Sea” with music from Disney’s beloved “The Little Mermaid” and Debussy’s “La Mer.”

By Angel VeeHottest Christmas toys 2012 are on

the rise. That’s right parents, it’s that time to start thinking and purchasing so your child can get at least one of the most popular toys this year with-out fighting lines or waiting on pre-orders. Will Furby be your choice or maybe the new Wii U? So many toys to choose from this year. Let’s check out your top choices this year, and hopefully this list will help you decide.

Furby Is Back! The silly and boring interactive talk-

ing Furby from the 90’s is back to an-noy the parents even more. This time around the toy is louder, creepier, and much more expensive. However, kids all over the world are falling in love with the new Furby regardless of what others are saying. Choose from Purple, teal, orange, black, white, yel-low etc. Beware, some retailers are selling this toy as high as $200, just because of it’s popularity. Find it at Walmart or Amazon for under $60.00.

One Direction Collector DollsEach year you have that one

celebrity doll which makes the kids

go crazy. Last year it was all about Bieber. This year it’s the pop-ular English boy band called One Direction, who are famous for the hit song called “What Makes You Beautiful.”

Choose from Zayn, Louis, Liam, Harry, or Niall. $19.99 each. Good for boy or girl. Trust me some boys like this band just as much as the girls.

Y Volution Fliker F1 Flow Series Scooter

The Fliker Scooter is sure to be a huge hit this year. Kids can now use their body and strength to move instead of kicking the street. Can choose from pink, green, black or red.$99.99 at Toys R Us. Get one now before they are all gone.

Lego And Mega Bloks Are In De-mand

Kids love to build stuff, it keeps them occupied for hours. Almost

everything/character is made into Lego’s or Blok’s these days. You have Ninjago Snake, Lego City, Friends, Monster Fighters, Star Wars etc. Best deals can be found at your nearest Walmart or Toys R Us.

Wii UThere will be 2 versions. One will

be the basic white which will cost you around $299. The other model will be your premium model which will run

you $349, but will include Nintendo Land. Wii U will launch on November 18. However, you can pre-order this item now.

Other toys that made the list this year 2012 are the following: Doc McStuffins Doll, Jake and The Never Land Pirates, Terrain Twister Vehicle, Lalaloopsy Silly Hair Doll, LeapPad2 Explorer Tablet, Micro Chargers Time Track Race Track, and the Gelarti Designer Studio.

By Crystal RayOlder people usually have just

about everything that they could possibly want. If they need or want something in particular, they simply go out and buy it. A grandmother typi-cally collects dozens of knickknacks and decorative presents over the years. Instead of adding to a mas-sive collection, consider Christmas gift options that she can actually use. When a grandmother does not really need anything in particular, give her a Christmas present that will not sit around collecting dust. My grand-mother had everything that she could possibly want, and I came up with options that I knew she would use.

Give a Grandmother Postage Stamps, Boxed Greeting Cards and Stationery

When looking for gift ideas for a grandmother that has everything, consider giving her a book of postage stamps along with high quality boxed greeting cards and stationery. If she sends cards and/or letters, she will love the Christmas gift. It is something that will take up very little space, and unlike many other gifts, it will be used instead of stored on a shelf.

Create a Pretty Basket of Edibles

A grandmother that has everything would probably love a Christmas gift bas-ket filled with her favorite fresh, canned and home baked foods. Unlike co-logne that she might not like or unnecessary trinkets or candles, food is a neces-sity that will be enjoyed. Buy a pretty basket to hold the gift items, and after it is empty it can be used to stylishly store magazines, craft supplies or anything else that needs a home. Just about anyone could use a lovely basket, espe-cially a grandmother that has everything and needs more options for storage.

Buy a Christmas Gift that Will Preserve Her Memo-ries, Recipes and More

My grandmother passed away a few years ago, and something that I wish I had given her for Christmas gift would have helped her memories live on. Although it is too late, I recently found a memory/

recipe book. It is blank inside, and it provides spaces to record special notes, recipes and more. If you are Christmas shopping for your grand-mother, it is not too late. Give her a

gift that will keep on giving for genera-tions to come. She will feel greatly loved, blessed and truly honored with the gift.

By Beth CallahanOn the lookout for what is going to

be hot in the world of Baby Dolls and accessories this Christmas 2012? If you are, than you have come to the right place! The dolls in this Baby Dolls holiday shopping guide vary from the amazing electronic versions to the basic baby doll and everything in-between. There are also a couple of baby doll accessories included as well. If you have anything baby re-lated on your Christmas shopping list in 2012, make sure you get these hot baby doll items before they become scarce.

Baby Alive Baby All Gone by Has-bro- $25.00 3 years & up

I have one daughter who is not really a fan of electronic baby dolls and one that loves them. The Baby Alive Baby All Gone doll has a few electronic actions that satisfies both my kids and I like it as well. My big-gest complaint about the Baby Alive brand of dolls was that so many of them had to have food mix, drink mix, or diapers. The Baby Alive Baby All Gone allows kids to have the fun of “feeding” their baby and giving them something to drink without parents having to constantly purchase the mixes and diapers. When you push the spoon in the bowl, it activates a lever that slides a “spoonful” of bananas into view. Touching it to the lip of the baby doll makes it slide back into the spoon as if she took the bite. I do wish this action was a little quieter and smoother so it was not quite as noticeable. It also comes with a disappearing liquid sippy cup that refills when turned right side up. You can push her bracelet to have her say phrases that ask for food or drink and when something touches her tongue she makes eating or drinking sounds. Overall, this is a wonderfully priced

doll and something my daughters love. I highly recommend this for you Christmas shopping list this year.

Mattel Doctor Mommy Doll- around $ 45.00 5 years & up

The Doctor Mommy Dolls from Mattel is a great Christmas gift for the little girl who wants to grow up and be a doctor. The Doctor Mommy Doll comes with 8 accessories to go with the doctor theme of play. The stethoscope lights up and plays a soft heartbeat when the button is pushed. The thermometer flips between a happy and sad face to indicated a

temperature or no temperature. The actual doll forehead lights up with a red light to further show a tempera-ture. There is also a shot that allows you to give her medicine to make her feel better. These 3 accessories are pretty much the only ones that my daughters really cared about. The doll also includes a medicine drop-per, bandaid, reflex hammer, tongue depressor, and name tag for mom. My kids favorite aspect of this doll is that when you tap her knee with the reflex hammer, it will kick. Overall, the doll has a limited scope of play when it comes to playing and I think it would appeal to the younger children. This doll is a great way to help your child feel more comfortable about going to the doctor or nurturing her interest in being a doctor.

Famosa Nenuco Sleep with Me Doll $30.00 3 years & up

The Nenuco Sleep with Me Doll from Nenuco is one of the best values in regards to dolls that I have seen in a long time. It seems when I am shopping for dolls that you have to pay a lot for any dolls that come with accessories outside of a baby bottle or small toy. If they do come with any accessories, they seem to be poorly

made or flimsy. The Nenuco Sleep with Me Doll comes with a baby doll that is dressed in pajamas, a pacifier, and a crib. The crib is well made and even comes with a nightlight that plays music and changes color. My favorite thing about the crib is that it actually attaches easily to the side of a toddler or twin bed like a co-sleeper cot would for real babies. The crib can also be used independently and stands on its own as well. The crib itself is built well and can withstand the rough play of younger kids. The doll itself is not electronic so that can be a negative or a positive depending on the child. This is a great addition for the doll lover on your Christmas list for 2012.

Hasbro Baby Alive Wanna Walk $ 55.00 3 years & up

The Baby Alive Wanna Walk is a perfect Christmas gift for those kids that love electronic dolls. The Wanna Walk doll is ready to learn to walk and the child on your list has to help her learn. The doll says over 30 phrases that vary from asking for help up, telling you she wants to walk, or just laughing. The child can hold onto both hands and the doll will start to sway back and forth and actually walk forward. The doll can tell the difference between when your child is helping and when she is walking on her own. The doll will occasionally fall down and then ask for you to help her up. The only negative that I could say about this doll is that her design does limit the play to walking. She can not bend her legs to sit down very well and the phrases she says also limit game play. Again, that is something that could be a negative or a positive depending on the child.

Nenuco Runny Nose Doll $22.00 4 years & up

This baby doll is one that uses water to spice up the game play. Instead of hav-ing to deal with we t d iapers like most wa-ter play baby dolls, this doll has water that lightly runs out of the nose to imitate a runny nose. The doll comes with a sippy cup and kids give the baby a drink. Then you light-ly press on their

hand and it makes the water bubble out of the nose. Kids can use of the included tissues out of the box to wipe their nose. You do have to press very gently or the water will shoot out of the nose instead of trickle. The doll is dressed in a cute winter outfit so it is perfect for a Christmas gift under the tree. My kids like the fact that you can add the sick baby aspect to their play or leave it out. That versatility is nice and keeps the dolls from becom-ing boring quickly. The Runny Nose doll is decently priced and a unique from most dolls that I have seen on shelves thus far.

Baby Alive Princess Sips N’ Tinkles Doll $25.00 3 years & up

This Baby Alive doll is the perfect gift for you little princess this Christ-mas. The doll comes with a sippy cup, one diaper, a little book, a tiara, and two outfits. This doll does wet in her diaper from the water that you give her through the sippy cup. The book is princess themed, the dresses are princess-type dresses, and the tiara finishes off the princess theme for the doll. The Baby Alive doll does require diapers to play and you will most likely have to purchase the additional pack of diapers sold separately. I recom-mend letting the diapers air dry so you can re-use them to cut down on the cost of the diapers. You can get quite a few uses out of them before the tape does not work anymore. I like the fact that the doll has the princess items that will appeal even more to those that love princesses. This doll can be a great addition to those girls that are playing queen and they can have their princess baby girl.

These are the baby doll’s that caught my eye from the Baby Doll aisle for Christmas 2012. I think that any girl would be ecstatic to receive any of these dolls under their Christ-mas tree.
