RECOMMENDATIONS
General System Recommendations
LSC Communications recommends maintaining a “clean” system fonts folder, which means keeping only the required system fonts within this folder. Installing Acrobat will install fonts that are not strictly necessary, such as Adobe Sans Adobe Sans MM, Adobe Serif MM, Arial, Book Antiqua, Bookman Old Style, Century Gothic, Century Schoolbook, Courier New, Letter Gothic MT, Times NR, and MT Extra Bold. This is complicated under MacOS X, where font resources may reside in several different locations.
LSC Communications recommends the use of a font utility such as Adobe Type Manager or Suitcase to manage fonts. Creating font sets for job specific fonts will save time in organization, activation, and deactivation of fonts.
Suggested Plug-Ins, XTensions, PPDs, and Applications to Create Good PDF Files
LSC Communications recommends that you avoid some potential file problems by downloading and installing the following helpers (please note that you must restart your applications after installation for changes to take place):
Creo Color TIFF XT—This is an extension for QuarkXPress versions 4.04 through 5.01 that goes into the XTension folder within the QuarkXPress application folder. Note that it is not necessary when using QuarkXPress 6.x and higher. It is available for free at www.prinergy.com (follow the “Support & Services” link to the “Self Help: Downloads” page) and helps avoid potential file problems caused by colorized TIFFs, custom-colored backgrounds, and registration and crop marks. It is not necessary—and should NOT be used—for QuarkXPress versions 6.x and higher.Creo Distiller Assistant—This is a plug-in for Acrobat Distiller with an automatic installer that will install it directly onto your system. The Distiller plug-in is available for free at www.prinergy.com and from the LSC Communications Book platform site at www.rrdbook.com, and helps avoid potential problems caused by programs that utilize RGB color space (like FrameMaker and MS Word), fixes hairline rules, and deals with compression issues.Prinergy Refiner PPD—PostScript Printer Description files (PPD files) are text files that provide a uniform approach to using the diverse features of devices that contain PostScript interpreters. The Prinergy Refiner PPD helps avoid potential problems by addressing issues like memory, font availability, TrueType font handling, resolution, paper size, etc. PPDs should not be confused with PostScript drivers or printer drivers like LaserWriter 8.x that are used to convert the desktop applications’ drawing routines into PostScript. This file is available from the LSC Communications Book platform website at www.rrdbook.com. Enfocus PitStop—Customers who preflight files before submission dramatically increase their first time success in preflight. We suggest using Enfocus’s PitStop program (www.enfocus.com) for preflighting PDF files. Preflight settings files for PitStop tailored to RR Donnelley’s recommended settings are available from the LSC Communications Book platform website at www.rrdbook.com.
Please note that RRD’s PDF guidelines are only nominally different from those of other suppliers using a PDF workflow. However, if you plan to use a different combination of settings for creating PostScript and PDF, we strongly urge you to submit a test file before submitting live job files.

As an older version, QuarkXPress 3.32 is less compatible with our workflow. For example, we are unable to support custom colorized TIFF files, grayscale TIFFs on custom color backgrounds, or
gradients that use custom colors.
Due to these and other limitations, we encourage the use of QuarkXPress 4.1 or greater.
Contact your LSC Communications division for details.

PRINT OPTION SETTINGS – QUARKXPRESS 6.x
NOTES ABOUT QUARKXPRESS 6.x
About Prinergy and QuarkXPress 6.x. QuarkXPress 6.1 and 6.5 are capable of supporting “DeviceN”color spaces for spot colors, such as for colorized TIFF images. Thus, the Creo Color TIFF XT XTensionfor Quark is no longer used. Indeed, it cannot be used for Quark 6.x PostScript: as it causes Distiller tofail. You may use Distiller with RR Donnelley’s job options, but without the Creo Color TIFF XT. Theresulting PDF will work in Prinergy.
Note that in the Output screen shot that follows, we suggest—per Quark’s recommendations—that theoutput color be set to “DeviceN” for color jobs. This will leave any CMYK elements in their original colors, but will also retain any spot colors in proper DeviceN colorspace. At your discretion, you may elect to use“Composite CMYK” if you wish to have QuarkXPress perform color conversion for any non-CMYKelements. But be aware this is not our recommended approach for best possible color reproduction. Thefollowing instructions illustrate how to create appropriate Print Styles for color or black-only work.
The Courier, Helvetica, Symbol and Times font families will not embed in Quark v6.x postscript; therefore, you must ensure Acrobat Distiller has access to these fonts prior to creating the PDF file. This can beaccomplished in Distiller via "Font Locations" under the "Settings" menu by designating a path to thefolder containing these fonts. It is important, for reliable results, that these fonts be the same as thoseused in creating the Quark document. For more details about adding or removing font locations, pleaserefer to the documentation that came with Distiller.
About QuarkXPress 6 Export PDF and Prinergy. Export PDF from QuarkXPress 6.x creates PDF 1.5 files, which have shown a potential problem with text sometimes shifting location on a page in Prinergy.Additionally, the resulting PDF does not have correct trim box geometry information. Therefore werecommend not using Export PDF because it provides too little control over the resulting PDF file.Instead, continue to write Postscript from Quark and create the PDF file from Postscript using AcrobatDistiller.
Before starting to work with QuarkXPress 6.x, go to Utilities menu > Xtensions Manager:Disable the Custom Bleeds and OPI XTensions. Then restart QuarkXPress. Doing this removes thepossibility of assymetrical bleeds (we recommend equal bleeds on all sides) and allows the Print Stylecreated to control whether OPI is used.
Before starting to work with QuarkXPress 6.x, go to Utilities menu > PPD Manager:Make sure the Prinergy Refiner PPD is recognized and enabled. If it is not, it is possible to add it via thePPD Manager, regardless of the directory in which the PPD resides.
To create an appropriate “virtual printer” in MacOS X, follow these instructions:The Prinergy Refiner PPD should be installed in Library\Printers\PPDs\Contents\Resources\en.lproj.Launch the Printer Setup Utility from Applications\Utilities. Click on the “Add” button.Select “IP Printing” from the pop-up list, and in the “Printer’s Address” field enter “localhost” (Unixshorthand for “this computer”).Clear the checkbox for “Use Default Queue on Server.” This will allow you to enter a queue namemeaningful to you, such as “Postscript_Output.”Select “Creo Products” from the “Printer Model” pop-up list, then select “Prinergy Refiner” as themodel name.Click the “Add” button to finish creating this “virtual printer.” It can now be selected in theQuarkXPress print dialogs.
