The LSO is proud to be the Resident Orchestra at the Barbican in the City of London, the Orchestra’s home since the Centre opened.

From its base in the City the LSO performs 70 concerts a year,

with an additional 70 concerts performed abroad. Made up of nearly

a hundred talented players, it is widely acknowledged as one of the

top five orchestras in the world, and since its formation in 1904 has

worked with an enviable family of artists from around the globe.

The Orchestra’s Barbican home has enabled the LSO to establish

a loyal audience and fulfil its many artistic aspirations.

The LSO is set apart from other international orchestras by the

depth of its commitment to music education and introducing people

from all walks of life to music-making, reaching over 60,000 people

each year. At LSO St Luke’s, the Orchestra’s venue on Old Street,

you can witness chamber and solo recitals, jazz and world music,

2 WELCOME / REVOLUTIONARY RUSSIANS ~ LSO.CO.UK

LSO Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev returns to the Russian repertoire with which he made his name, alongside powerhouse pianist Denis Matsuev.

This series surveys some of the leading figures of Russian music,

from the lesser-known – like Tishchenko, a student of Shostakovich –

to the familiar, including Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, whose

much-loved Second Piano Concerto (made famous by Brief Encounter)

provides a fitting showpiece for Matsuev’s steel-fingered virtuosity.

The exploration extends back to Balakirev, founder of ‘The Five’, a group

of composers dedicated to establishing an authentic nationalist school in

the 1860s. His symphonic poem Russia is a prime example of the movement,

peppered with themes drawn from Russian folk songs. And the series runs

right up to Soviet Russia, represented in symphonies by Prokofiev and

Shostakovich – from the former’s tongue-in-cheek ‘Classical’ Symphony

to the latter’s turbulent yet ultimately triumphant Tenth.

Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler – a trio of composers whose symphonies unleash the full, spine-tingling force of the orchestra, and will leave you hanging on every moment of musical drama.

Each of these figures carved out their own approach to the symphony.

Brahms, famously haunted by the legacy of Beethoven’s nine totemic

symphonies, wrote four of his own; this autumn, hear his Third and Fourth,

which is crowned by an intricate, imposing finale.

Something altogether different is found in Bruckner’s symphonies,

visionary orchestral structures that unfold on a colossal scale, epitomised

in the vast Eighth. Similarly distinctive is the powerful world of Mahler,

brought to life by the composer’s kaleidoscopic use of the different

sections of the orchestra. Over the coming months, we hear both his

First Symphony and the very last he completed, the valedictory Ninth.

A world premiere marks the start of the LSO’s four-year commemoration of World War I.

Sally Beamish’s Equal Voices is a new 45-minute piece for chorus,

orchestra and two soloists, commissioned by the LSO (with generous

support from LSO Patron Susie Thomson) and the Royal Scottish

National Orchestra. Based on Sir Andrew Motion’s poem An Equal Voice,

Beamish’s new work draws on the tragedy of shell shock and war-induced

post-traumatic stress. Juxtaposing the voices of patients and doctors used

in the poem with some of the most beautiful passages in the Old Testament’s

‘Song of Songs’, the piece contrasts Motion’s dark and devastating imagery

with this remarkable Middle Eastern love idyll.

This poignant premiere is just one of this autumn’s breathtaking

choral highlights, which also include Rachmaninov’s magical ‘Vespers’,

a choral Christmas spectacular, and Schumann’s magnificent oratorio

(an opera specifically written to be performed in concert) Das Paradies

und die Peri, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
