Love is not supposed to hurt. My daddy hurt my brother and mommy. I bleed tears. These are all words from domestic violence survivors at CHOICES, LSS’ domestic violence program. Rather than simply verbalizing these thoughts, survivors were able to write them on t-shirts as part of the Clothesline Project. This nationwide program is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions and share their experience with others. After the shirts are written or drawn on, they are hung on a clothesline for display. At CHOICES, clients who participate do so at a community house meeting. Some share their stories while creating their shirts. Others keep their stories to themselves. For most, it is emotionally intense, powerful and even cathartic. In the words of one survivor, I stand tall because I found my voice, and I can speak up for myself.

Faith Housing of Fairfield County recently received a grant from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to begin a Supportive Services to Veterans Families (SSVF) program, which provides financial and case management assistance to veterans and their families who are homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless. Faith Housing of Fairfield County also offers emergency and transitional housing for veterans. “What makes this a unique program is that we can help the families of veterans too, where the other programs we run are designed to only help the veteran,” said Eddie Rapp, director of Faith Housing of Fairfield County. “We also are able to reach far into the community and serve veterans in Fairfield, Hocking, Perry, Ross,

Fayette, and Pickaway counties.” In Columbus, LSS’ Faith Mission has been offering a SSVF program for a little more than a year and served 121 households during that time. “We see veterans of all ages but many are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan,” Sue Villilo, executive director of Faith Mission, said. “Recently a young veteran found himself on the verge of homelessness when his girlfriend died, leaving him to raise their child alone. Through the SSVF program at Faith Mission, the family was able to obtain the financial assistance and support they needed to maintain their housing. Both father and daughter are now able to focus on rebuilding from their loss, knowing their home is secure.”

Serving Those Who Served

Dear Friend, Christmas will come and go this year before we know it. But unfortunately, hunger and homelessness will not. Many are going hungry in our community these days. Some are homeless living on the streets. Most of us know someone who has fallen on hard times. We’ve seen people broken… many who have never before experienced losing their homes coming to us for help. But through your generous compassion, we are able to reach out to the homeless and hungry and provide them with the comfort and resources they need to find their way out of hard times.

It has become an LSS tradition to offer special Christmas angel ornaments as a token of our thanks for your generous holiday donation. We’d love to send you a silver angel for your gift of $75 – or a gold angel ornament if you donate $150 or more.Your donation will allow us to provide those who need us with nourishing meals, shelter, health care and most of all HOPE for the future. As we celebrate the Christmas spirit, let me sincerely thank you for your selfless commitment. You and others like you have helped us provide a hand up to those who need it most. May you and your loved ones have a blessed Christmas season.

Happy Holidays!

For more than 100 years, LSS has been helping people by meeting their basic needs of hunger, housing, healing and hope. This would not be possible without the help of our faithful supporters. To honor our most generous donors, LSS has established the Full Plate Society as a visual celebration of their kindness and support, along with a reminder of what it meansto be human. We know that the issuesof hunger and homelessness are not simply about food on the table or a roof over your head. They are also about dignity, respect and self-worth. Allpeople should feel these, but it’s hard to do so when your basic needs are notbeing met. By donating to LSS and joining the Full Plate Society, donors are ensuring a hungry family can feel hopeful again and a person experiencing homelessness can know their worth. There are several levels of giving in the Full Plate Society, starting at $2,500. Each level corresponds to a

decorative plate that is hung in a food pantry or shelter dining area. The plates feature an encouraging word and the name of the donor. When grouped on the wall, the plates make a beautiful display that uplifts and inspires everyone who sees it. For more information or to join the Full Plate Society, please call us 614-228-5200 or visit www.lssco.org/donate.
