BEIJING, 26 Feb — Cutting calories and stickingwith it is the best way to lose weight regardless ofwhether a diet emphasizes fat, protein, or carbohy-drates, according to a new study published on Wednes-day.
As the world grapples with rising obesity, millionshave turned to popular diets like Atkins, Zone andOrnish that tout the benefits of one nutrient over an-other.
The debate has been going on for two decades onwhich diet is best for weight loss.
However, a US study shows that would-be dietersshould choose the weight-loss programme that theyare most comfortable with, as long as it is high in fiberand low in calories and saturated fat.
“All the diets were winners,” said study co-authorDr Frank Sacks, a professor of cardiovascular diseaseprevention at the Harvard School of Public Health.
“The key really is that it’s calories. It’s not the con-tent of fat or carbohydrates, it’s just calories,” saidSacks.

alcohol face an increased risk of some cancers, says astudy conducted on nearly 1.3 million British females.
The research involved middle-aged women whowere surveyed at breast cancer screening clinics abouttheir drinking habits and their health was tracked forseven years. A few women reported no alcohol usewhile the rest consumed fewer than three drinks a day;the average was one drink a day. Researchers com-pared the lightest drinkers — two or fewer drinks aweek — with people who drank more.
Each extra drink per day increased the risk of breast, rectal and liver cancer, University of Oxford research-ers reported Tuesday in the Journal of the NationalCancer Institute. The type of alcohol — wine, beer orliquor — didn’t matter. —Internet

WHO warns drugresistance could setbackmalaria control success
GENEVA, 26 Feb — The emergence of a drug-resistant form of malaria in South-East Asia couldseriously undermine the successes of global efforts tocontrol the disease, the World Health Organization(WHO) warned on Wednesday. There is new evidencethat parasites resistant to artemisinin, the main drugused to treat malaria, have emerged along the borderbetween Cambodia and Thailand, the UN agency saidin a press release. There is a risk that local people, whowalk for miles every day to clear forests, could beinfected with a drug-resistant form of malaria, it said.
“If we do not put a stop to the drug-resistant malariasituation that has been documented in the Thai-Cambodia border, it could spread rapidly to neighboringcountries and threaten our efforts to control this deadlydisease,” said Dr Hiroki Nakatani, WHO assistantdirector-general.According to WHO, huge strides havebeen made in the last 10 years to reduce the burden ofmalaria, one of the world’s major killer diseases.Therecent shift from failing drugs to the highly effectiveartemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) hasbeen a breakthrough. —Internet
